programmeThe Master’s in Health Sciences is an innovative programme offering two specializations: ‘Health

Services and Management’ and ‘Health Technology Assessment and Innovation’.

Developments in medical technology have changed our perception of ideal healthcare. An ageing population has led to a greater incidence of conditions such as strokes and Alzheimer’s. In the long term we can expect a huge rise in the demand for care, partly because of the rapid development in medical technologies. Moreover, patients are becoming more vocal: they no longer just sit back and wait, but are now critical consumers. Insurance systems are also subject to increasingly stringent requirements and frequent amendments to legislation.

All these developments have massive implications for healthcare. Which technology should be introduced and which should not? What obstacles should we expect to meet along the way? How can we improve healthcare delivery? How can we involve patients in the decision-

making processes? Finding and communicating the best solutions to these problems is a real challenge. As a Health Sciences student you will learn how to implement high-tech advances in healthcare and strategies for optimizing healthcare organization while maintaining a human touch. You will also become an expert in evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare technologies.

SpecializationS

HealtH ServiceS and ManageMentHealth Services and Management looks at improving and optimizing the way in which care is organized at the institutional level and between different institutions. It explores how to optimize healthcare processes, including their quality, and safety within the healthcare sector. The specialization focuses on the evaluation and implementation of new care concepts. For example, how can healthcare providers work together using care innovation and IT to treat and care for people with common chronic disorders?

A new element in this specialization is the logistics course, which focuses on operations management and optimizing healthcare processes.

HealtH tecHnology aSSeSSMent and innovationEvaluation of medical technology and technology policy are the key elements in this specialization, which focuses on the effectiveness of policy and new medical technology. As an example, we are studying the most cost-effective way of using a revolutionary PET scan machine to screen for tumours. How will its introduction affect the organization and policy of care and communication with regard to patients and healthcare insurers? Imagine a new cytostatic drug has been developed that produces fewer side effects. Can you simply go ahead and administer this drug? Where does the responsibility for such a decision lie? What do legislation and regulations have to say about such cases? New technology has made it possible to tackle disease at the molecular level, opening the door to made-to-measure treatment and prevention. But do we really want to equip everyone with their own individual healthcare monitor? What are the medical, financial and organizational implications of such a development? You will explore questions relating to patient empowerment and the introduction and costing of new technology in the healthcare sector.

You will learn how to implement high-tech advances in healthcare and strategies for optimizing healthcare organization while maintaining a human touch

career opportUnitieSAs a Master of Science in Health Sciences, you will be ideally suited to tackle work at the highest level in

all areas of healthcare. You will be well qualified to take on management or other senior posts at

healthcare institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes and residential care facilities.

However, you can just as easily take up a position at a municipal or regional health authority (GGD). Alternatively you could become a policy-maker or policy advisor at a local authority. You might also opt for a career in research or take up a position within a government or semi-governmental agency, such as the Nether lands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment or the Healthcare Insurance Board. The possibilities don’t end there. How about a job in education, at a university or a research institute?

You could also pursue a career in the services sector, in industry, at an organizational consultancy or with a health insurance provider.

HealtH tecHnology aSSeSSMent and innovationAs a graduate of this specialization, you will be able to work as a policy consultant and researcher in the area of healthcare policy and chronic illness. You could also find a job as a project worker or project leader in the medical and pharmaceutical industry or at a government institute.

HealtH ServiceS ManageMentAs a graduate of this specialization, you will be able to work as a manager or project manager in a healthcare institution. As a manager, you could find yourself advising the Executive Board on a new project designed to discharge patients from hospital as efficiently as possible. You could also play a key role in quality policy or healthcare innovation projects. One major area of concern is intensive care for chronically ill patients. NAME melati arUm Satiti

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN indoneSia

Before I came to do the Master’s programme in Health Sciences here, I completed my Bachelor’s

programme in Medical Science at the University of Melbourne.

The reason I chose to do this Master’s programme is because I wanted to learn more about healthcare with respect to its management and governance. The thing that makes this programme unique for me is that it offers analytical methods of the healthcare system in a multidisciplinary way, including mathematics, law, technology and others.I came to the University of Twente because it has a collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. Apart from the fact that this university is considered to be one of the best universities covering the area of my interest. The facilities provided here are also better compared to my home country.

Due to the fact that my Bachelor’s programme only had a limited relation to this Master’s programme, I am really learning a lot. I try to combine the knowledge gained in both programmes to improve my capabilities in the field.

This Master’s programme allows me to work in hospitals, governmental institutions and any other healthcare related institution. I am not sure what I want to do after I finish this programme, but I will probably look for an opportunity to stay and work here in the Netherlands and learn more about its language.
