Consensus-based group design-build project with 14
classmates for the Center for Sustainable Living (CASL) Dem-
onstration House near the University of Oregon campus. CASL
sought a welcoming porch design that could provide visitor
seating, garden access and act as an improptu outdoor
classroom. Our class built the porch in 6 weeks.

Furniture studio project : express a new piece of storage out of
a found piece of storage with re-use of material or an essential
detail. The designs for a traveling and wall-mounted herbal
medicine chest grew out of an interest in organizing matter in
such a way that molecular structure would be made perceiv-
able in macroscopic form. Instructor: Sara Huston

Master’s thesis :
To maximize the food production within
urban and suburban neighborhoods , two
distinct housing types were developed to maxi-
mize solar exposure to the site and create vital,
garden-centric public and private social spaces :
the Garden Terrace Rowhouse and the Garden
Sideyard House .
These compact housing types (1000 - 1900 sf ), sit-
ed on relatively small lots (1950 - 2200 sf ), access
shared common gardens and open space that
may, for example, be held in common by a neigh-
borhood association that oversees farmers who

The 2, 3 or 4-story Garden Terrace Rowhouse , lo-
cated along the North edge of the block or site, con-
sists of A) a single multi-story home, B) stacked, in-
dividual flats or C) a multi-story townhouse atop a
ground floor, ADA accessible flat. Interior garages,
office and retail storefronts are optional on the
ground floor. South-facing sunspaces step vertical-
ly toward the North, maximizing solar surface area
to porches and sunspaces with garden views.
Tilt-up concrete party walls between rowhouses
enhance acoustic privacy. Neighboring rowhouses
share a rain and graywater cistern which consi-
tutes a prominent concrete form on the South facade.

CISTERN (tilt-up concrete)
provides privacy between rowhouses in addition to
storing 100% of rain-water harvested from
the roof as well as 17% (3-story rowhouse) to

the cistern is accessible from both neighboring rowhouses for use as a hot tub patio or garden
terrace.

to both unit types. Horizontal
siding and hardyboard pan-
els clad the structure and are
applied to vertical P.T. furring
strips, over a continuous mois-
ture barrier membrane. The
2x6 stud wall cavity encloses
1.5” of spray foam and 3” of
blown-in cellulose to pro-
vides sufficient insulation and
limit air infiltration. A raised
heel roof truss allows for an
additional depth of insulation at
the eave. A CMU crib wall sup-
ports the backfill along the base
of the North wall. The South-
facing sunroom performs as an
inhabitable double envelope

Intended as a sensorily rich, interactive teaching tool for childrento aid in the discovery that colored lights combine to create white light. This playful, low-mounted light cupboard radiates subtle, ethe-real light, which emerges as the glow from LED rope lights filters
through colorful fused glass panels. The gentle light is safe to view
directly, and can be modulated through the adjustment of a cupboard

Self-directed independent study project:
Create a tactile thinking tool to aid in the
process of non-linear ideation. When an
entrenched social or environmental condition
requires a novel approach, a malleable ide-
ation modality that opperates beyond lin-
ear process and linear thinking could catalyze
insights from outside the rooted paradigm.
This deck, comprised of five card categories,
includes blank cards to be written on during
fluid ideation, as ideas and connections
come into focus. Additionally, pre-printed
cards with core statements and phrases an-
chor the ideation process back to that which
supports sustainable human and envi-
ronmental health, seen as bedrock to any
salient, new idea in this day and age.
CNC (computer numerically controled) rout-
ing and laser cutting technology were ex-
plored in the interest of creating a modular
system conducive to large-scale production
that still retains a hand-made quality.

Low-rise alley infill was explored as an option for densifying the
historic West Jefferson neighborhood in Eugene, Oregon. A com-
pact (950 sf ), 2 bedroom, 2 bath house on a quarter-acre alley lot
was conceived of as a thickened, occupyable alley wall. While
abuting the alley closely, set five feet back from the North prop-
erty line, the house enclosure progressively dissolves into the South
garden. Pacific Northwest lifestyle seasonally introverts in wet
winters and extroverts in dry summers, thus necessitating a house
that seasonally unfolds. Layers of indoor and outdoor space
for garden living, from sunroom to patio to garden, provide such
seasonal adaptabilty.

Founding business objective : create plant-pigmented art supplies with natural materials
as a healthier, earthier art experience for children. Various plant pigments were incorporated
into a melted beeswax and carnauba wax base and poured into soap molds for crayons in
shapes from nature, comforting to the palm.

Located in Cottage Grove, Oregon, this non-profit research center, Approvecho, develops and markets fuel-efficient,
non-polluting wood-burning cookstoves for affordable use in developing countries. The center seeks expanded
classroom space and guest accommodations in ‘test kitchen’ outbuildings that demonstate traditional methods of
cooking from around the world. A central courtyard gathering space, ringed by spacious porches, was created
to link new and existing workshop facilities. An exisiting, defunct livestock holding area is adapted as an outdoor
classroom and visually prominent exhibition space for fuel-efficient stoves. To assist in the uptake of toxins
from this brownfield site, bioremediatory swales and planters are employed in parking and courtyard areas.
Separate, raised vegetable beds, with clean soil adjoin and compliment kitchen areas. Professor: Michael Cockram

Project for a Summer drawing intensive : design and depict the interior and experior
spaces of a small rural cabin , using freehand line drawing techniques. Proper use of
line weight and rendering techniques were practiced to convey the technical and
experiential qualities of the space. Built into a hillside overlooking a lake , the
architecture of this cabin provides spatial layers of comfort and coziness (refuge)
that dissolve into expansive views to beyond (prospect).
