May, 2017 Dear Parents and Students, Welcome to middle school! I think you will find that attending Savanna Oaks Middle School will be a positive experience for both parents and students. The entire staff works very hard to make this learning environment a successful place for everyone. Part of sixth grade is a two-day overnight trip to Upham Woods, an environmental educational experience for our sixth graders. During Upham Woods, students get to know each other, develop cooperative work skills, learn a great deal about the outdoors and our environment, and have fun.

Our school is scheduled at Upham Woods from September 26-28. The cost per student is

$60.00. Partial scholarships are available by calling the sixth grade counselor: Asa Miura at 845-4026. Students will be going to Upham Woods for two days.

The success of Upham Woods depends on the assistance of the parent chaperones. Please sign up if you are available. In this booklet we have included information about the goals of Upham Woods, things parents need to take care of such as fees, items needed at Upham Woods by the students, a typical daily schedule, and emergency information. Mayo de 2017 Estimados padres y estudiantes, ¡Bienvenidos a la escuela secundaria! Creo que se darán cuenta que asistir a la Escuela Secundaria Savanna Oaks será una experiencia positiva tanto para los estudiantes como para sus padres. Todo el personal trabaja afanosamente en hacer que este entorno de aprendizaje promueva el éxito para todos. Getting Ready for Upham Woods

What Needs To Be Done?

1. Please fill out the student Forms completely and return them to the

Savanna Oaks Middle School Office by May 31st. Information on this form pertaining to the tetanus shot must be up to date.

2. Please pay the $60.00 fee. This fee covers the cost of food, lodging, rental of camp, and transportation. Please make checks payable to “SOMS”. We encourage you to pay the fee when you return the Health Forms to Savanna Oaks Middle School. If you need financial assistance, please enclose a note in the envelope with the Health Form or contact Asa Miura at 845-4026.

3. Volunteer! We need parents to volunteer as chaperones. You will be asked to spend the two days, including the overnight, with your child's group. You will be responsible for approximately ten sixth graders in an atmosphere of

fun and cooperation at the camp. If you are interested in chaperoning, please fill the chaperone form out and send it in as soon as possible to the Savanna Oaks Middle School Office.

You will be staying in cabins and your group will be under your supervision at all times.

If you have skills in the medical field and you can chaperone, please

volunteer. We need a person in charge of all medication for each group. The success of Upham Woods depends on the assistance of the parent

chaperones. Please sign up if you are available.

Preparativos para Upham Woods

¿Qué necesitan hacer?

1. Por favor llene el formularios y devuélvalo a la oficina de Savanna

Cada voluntario/a será responsables de aproximadamente diez alumnos de sexto grado en un entorno divertido y colaborativo. Se albergarán en cabañas y su grupo estará bajo su supervisión todo el tiempo.

GOALS OF THE UPHAM WOODS PROGRAM

“COOPERATING AS A GROUP WITH NATURE”

Upham Woods is a year-round environmental education center that offers young people an exciting view into the natural world. Its goal is to provide a learning environment where young people gain first-hand experiences in the natural sciences, group living, citizenship and outdoor education.

Through participation in Upham Woods activities, sixth grade students will have the opportunity:

1. To increase their knowledge of the relationship of wildlife to the

environment.

2. To increase their knowledge and skills in earth science studies.

3. To develop skills in gathering and processing information.

4. To increase their knowledge of Native Americans.

5. To improve group cooperation and physical fitness skills.

6. To explore the ecosystem of humans, plants, animals and earth resources.

7. To develop their listening skills.

8. To select and/or develop outdoor topics related to personal interests.

9. To increase their knowledge and their understanding of the natural

and human history of Blackhawk Island.

10. To work and camp with students from all six elementary schools to help create a sense of unity for all new middle schoolers.

OBJETIVOS DEL PROGRAMA EDUCATIVO AL AIRE LIBRE

“COLABORAR CON LA NATURALEZA COMO GRUPO”

Upham Woods es un Centro de Educación Ambiental que está abierto todo el año

y que ofrece a los jóvenes un fascinante panorama de la naturaleza. El objetivo del programa es proveer un ambiente/entorno de aprendizaje en donde los jóvenes puedan tener sus primeras experiencias con las ciencias naturales, la convivencia en grupo, las responsabilidades ciudadanas y la educación al aire libre.

Al p Al participar en las actividades de Upham Woods, los estudiantes del sexto grado tendrán las siguientes oportunidades:

1. Extender sus conocimientos sobre la relación entre la vida silvestre (fauna y

flora) y el medio ambiente. 2. Profundizar sus conocimientos y habilidades en el estudio de las ciencias

terrestres. 3. Desarrollar sus habilidades de recopilar y procesar información. 4. Ampliar sus conocimientos de los Americanos Nativos (Indio Americanos). 5. Mejorar su habilidad de trabajar en grupo cooperativamente y su condición

física. 6. Explorar el ecosistema de los seres humanos, las plantas, los animales, así

como la tierra y sus recursos. 7. Desarrollar sus habilidades para escuchar con atención. 8. Escoger y desarrollar temas sobre actividades que se puedan hacer al aire

libre que sean de su interés personal. 9. Ampliar su conocimiento y comprensión de la historia natural y humana de

Blackhawk Island.

10. Acampar y trabajar con otros estudiantes para ayudar a crear un sentido de unión y compañerismo entre todos los nuevos estudiantes que inician la escuela secundaria.

DIRECTIONS TO UPHAM WOODS

Madison From I 90-94 take Exit No. 87 (Hwy. 13) to Wisconsin

Dells off of Interstate. Go to the stoplight (Hwy. 12).

Take a left on Hwy. 12, and go to the top of the hill. Take

a right on County Hwy. "A" (which will turn into "N"). Go

under the railroad overpass. Upham Woods is located at

the bottom of the hill on the right side.

Baraboo Take Hwy. 12 through Lake Delton to Wisconsin Dells.

Proceed through the stoplights at the intersection of

Highway 23 and 13. Go straight ahead to the top of the

hill. Take a right on County Hwy. "A" which turns into

"N". Go under the railroad overpass, and Upham Woods

is located at the bottom of the hill on the right side.

Desde Madison: Tome la carretera I 90-94 y salga en la salida número 87 (Hwy. 13)
