Sony, Toshiba…the list of Japanese technology companies is probably the most 1: ____ anywhere in the world. From computers to cameras and robots to consoles, Japanese companies are among the best in the world. The country is a modern, 21st Century digital 2: ____! Yes? Well, actually not quite.

2 In many aspects Japan is really quite old-fashioned. For example, when ENW first arrived in Hiroshima in 1999, we were flabbergasted to 3: ____ that ATMs weren’t 24 hours. In fact, most closed by 7pm. Foreign credit cards were also not that widely 4: ____. It has improved slightly - now convenience stores operate machines that can run to 11pm and most city shops will accept your British, Canadian, Ukrainian or New Zealand Visa card.

3 The other custom that ENW had to get used to was using a ‘hanko’ or personal stamp. The Hanko is a small, personalised seal that is used instead of a signature on official documents. They range in price from €8.65 to €86 and before ENW could open a bank account, rent an 5: ____ or obtain a driving licence we needed to use our personally made hanko. Writing a scribbled signature would just not do.

4 However, the use of hanko may soon be coming to an end. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe this week ordered the government to review the laws that require official Japanese documents to be stamped by a hanko. The move seems to be in response to the reality that many 6: ____ Japanese don’t own a hanko. In a world of Paypal, PayPay, LINE Pay and Origami Pay – the hanko is considered to be a 7: ____ of analogue age.

5 24-year-old Tomoyuki Shiraishi who is a 8: ____ worker in Kurashiki a western Japanese city 142km from Hiroshima explained why he wasn’t a fan of using a hanko “It’s too much work to bring it and then to do the paperwork” he said. Whilst one university student from Hiroshima added, “I have a smartphone. It is much quicker. I don’t need a hanko”.

6 The current system has been in use in Japan since the 1870s, when the government passed a law that everyone must 9: ____ their personal stamp. ENW has had several hanko over the years, well we keep losing them, but it will be a sad day if they are no longer used.
