3. Designing Phase United Nations of Environment Programme

(UNEP) gave the concept of Ecodesign.

Another design tool called Quality FunctionDeployment (QFD) used to dissect theusability of the product to give the

understanding of environmental impact andtheir preventions in the early stages ofdesign.

q Material quantity must be used in smalleramount.

q Logistics and transportation of the material

should be easy to transport and retained.

mind to gain more benefits in future

PALM ISLAND DUBAICHALLENGES in the PROJECT

FACTS OF THE CASE Dubai is setting new records for the tallest building, hotel,

and largest waterfront.

Palm Island was built to increase its shore area as it is amajor place for tourism

Palm Islands is composed of three islands: Palm Jumeirah,Palm Jebel Ali, and Palm Deira

Built by the Dubai real estate firm Al Nakheel properties.

Palm Jumeirah - 600 hectares of land

and spans approx 4 by 5 kms Palm Jebel Ali covers 6 by 7 kms. Palm Deira - 80 square kms - the largestisland All three islands

Similar palm-shaped structures, The size of each varies. They all follow more or less the same state of the art

engineering and construction procedures.

Palm Jumeirah began in August 2001 up to2006. They are made from all natural materials upon

CHALLENGES IN THE PROJECT

How an island made out of sand, wouldremain in position

The challenge of dumping this sand layer had to bedone when the sea was the calmest to ensure stability.

How waves accumulated over long distancesvia persistent winds and large currentspotentially causing severe destruction to theislands.

How the stone wall is expected to stay in

placewithout concrete to secure it.

The lack of adequate water circulationaround the

fronds with the open sea. Natural beaches, do not naturally replenish

itself on facing erosion Gradually, sand will wash way, piling up further

along thestructure.

If sand is not replaced or frequently monitored,the

shoreline will no longer be straight. In extreme cases, the beach ma disa ear

STEPS TO OVERCOMEPROBLEMS Scientists said that the Arabian Gulf is the

perfectplace for construction because with a depth

of30 m and a width of 160 m, it is too short and

shallow for the creation of immenselydestructivewaves.

Scientists designed the crescent breakwaterstructure to protect the islands for high

waves and storms. Barge-loads of rubble were dumped on top of the sand layer to raise

the breakwater crescent from 4 m below to approximately 4 m abovethe sea.

The real protection comes from the outer armour, which is made out

of huge boulders of rocks with each rock weighing up to 6 tons

Scientists claim that rocks were selected by

sizeand weight and specially positioned bycranes.

Each rock "interlock" with the adjacent one to tackleforces of the sea.

Scientists send divers undersea to survey the ocean floor,every 27 m, looking for cracks and splinters in rocks or "rockfatigue" caused by strong waves.

Scientists made two openings in the

breakwater. Breaks were connected by bridges. These openings would prevent water

stagnation and permit marine traffic.

A tide would rush in two times a day,replenishing the water supply every 14 days.

This calls for constant maintenance toensure that shorelines of the mainland and

Palm islands remain relatively the sameover time.

EFFECTS OF PALM ISLAND The Palm Jumeirah, has a major role indestroying its nearby ecosystem.

According to a research project from the WorldEnvironmental and Water Resources Congress2009, the artificial islands are being built

without proper environmental studies

As a result the Persian Gulfs eco-system is indanger.

The islands damage the local aquatic environment, and cause rapid

erosion of the sand.

The islands are in danger of earthquakes because of liquefaction andslope failure.

Eventually, the artificial Palm Island could be underwater in 50 years
