On Saturday 14 February, Valentine’s Day
we had our first tutor workshop of the year
with the theme Kitchen Tea. We celebrated
our new coordinator Shelley’s up coming pre
nuptial wedding.
A huge thanks go to Gwenna and Rachel
Finikin who facilitated the workshop bril-
liantly. Thank you for the great sense of
humour and the introduction of the real Kiwi
traditional afternoon tea.
Tutors and learners were invited to bring
their wedding photos . Participants were
asked to guess the year the photos were
taken and to place the photos according to
the oldest to the most recent wedding. We
had fun dressing up the participants accord-
ing to the wedding gowns in the pictures with
rolls of toilet paper.
In another activity, we were asked to search
in our handbags on the number of items we
could find. Linda won as the highest points
scorer in this game. Among the things in her
handbag were an ipad, pens, USB sticks,
note books, tissue papers, cell phone and
keys.
Messages were read and sound advice was
given to Shelley on “What makes a great
marriage”!
Joan a tutor who had 50 years of marriage
shared a BIG piece of advice :
COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY TO A
HAPPY MARRIAGE!
Wishing you and Darren a lifetime
of everlasting love and happiness.
Congratulations on your Wedding!

Wilda’s Story
Valentine’s Day Kitchen Tea
Who says Valentine’s Day is only to be celebrated with your partners? On Saturday, Feb 14 I had the chance to partake in a kitchen tea party, which is basically a pre-wedding party for a soon-to-be-bride, at the English Language Partners (ELP). In our case, the soon-to-be-bride was Shelley. What was involved in the kitchen tea party? Tea of course was a crucial element as the name suggests. Let’s not forget all the sweets and savouries which were really important! Of course there were also games. About eight or nine ladies brought their wedding photos, which we had to put in time order based on their dress styles and when this was finished, the most fun game started! We went into groups and were given a lot of toilet paper, some tape and scissors. Our task was simple, dressing up our bride to look like one of the photos that we had to previously put in time order. The result? The photo below. We did not really succeed in making the bride look like the photo, but we did get the prize for the dress that Shelley liked the most!
During the tea party and the games that followed, I had the opportunity to chat with a few people, and learned a thing or two about the work that ELP does in general. I also found out about the volunteering opportu-nity to work with refugees and migrants and help them settle in. While I missed out on the volunteer training ses-sion that was run in January this year, ELP is running another session in June, which I plan to join. If you find yourself interested, come along and talk to someone from ELP. It was definitely a worthwhile way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, meet new people and get involved with the work that ELP does. Wilda Ribka
Thanks Wilda for the wonderful reflection on the
day. We look forward to you joining the Tutor
Training Course in June.

International Mother Language Day
Page 4 English Language Partners
We kicked off 2015 in style with a
public event Celebrating our cul-
tures on International Mother Lan-
guage day. We co-hosted the
event with Palmerston North Cen-
tral Library with the support of
various community language
groups. An estimated 150 people
joined us on the day. Participants
were asked to dress in their na-
tional costumes for the event.
There was an opportunity for peo-
ple to write in their mother lan-
guage on a language tree “I love
My language “ . There was a competi-
tion to pick up nuts with chopsticks and
some learners in the Bhutanese com-
munity sang a Nepalese song.
We also celebrated Chinese New Year
on the day. Participants were asked to
write Happy New Year in different lan-
guages.
It was an occasion that fostered cul-
tural, linguistic, artistic and friendly ex-
changes among learners, tutors and the
wilder local community.
Thanks to all for making it a Fun day!

Learner Progress Summary - LPS
English Language Partners Page 11
Many thanks to all of you for helping us to achieve a wonderful result with our LPS targets for 2014. For our 1 to 1 learners in the home tutoring programme, there was a 96% completion on the first LPS and 63% for the second. Our targets were 90% and 60%, so we are thrilled that so many learners got the opportunity to be assessed and have their progress measured. Adults need to know they are succeeding! Well done , all.
LPS assessment
We will be sending out a LPS form shortly to
those of you who is currently home tutoring a
learner or learners. This will be the first exer-
cise of the two assessments required annually.
The second assessment will be in September.
Watch out for the mail in your mail box. Please
contact the office if you have not received one

your use if this is preferred. If you cannot
