Introduction

According to SR Wurm, 1962, Golin belongs to the Hagen-Whagi-Jimi-Chimbu family and is a sub-dialect of the Marigl dialect of the Dom language. Speakers are situated on the north & south banks of the Marigl River. In 1980 we estimated the number of speakers to be around 25,000, however with many speakers now living in major towns, the number could be above 30,000.

Most of the material was collected between 1960 and 1981 from among the Egehu clan villages of Kone, Mui & Garibaguraal, and the two main language helpers were Kuri Waikauba and Gali Naama (deceased). More recently we have had help from John & Helen Dai, Dean Kuri and Gwiyaa Boi.

For an understanding of the classes marked, see ‘Golin Grammar’ SIL Workpapers in PNG Langauges, Vol . 5 Gordon Bunn; verbs see pp. 14-20 and nouns pp.48-54. For spelling used see ‘Golin Phonology’ published in Pacific Linguistics Series A-No23 ANU pp. 1-7 by Gordon & Ruth Bunn.

All work was done under the auspices of SIL . Some entries do not have tone marked, others need further checking, so this should be seen as a work in progress.
