“Our students have changedradically.”

“Today’s students are no longer the people our educational system

was designed to teach.”

Marc Prensky – Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants

How did we engage students that learn

linguistically

logically

spatiallymusically

bodily

interpersonally

intrapersonally

all in one classroom?

Page 3: Engaging

Now add the new evolution….

Page 4: Engaging

Is your classroom ready…

for the digital learners?

Page 6: Engaging

Back in the day, students didn’t expect to be fully engaged by

everything they did…

there were no…

CD players

portable DVDs

cell phones

internet resourcesMP3 players

ipods

PS3s

xbox

satellite TVs

podcasts

home computers

laptops

netbooks

With all these engaging learning options outside of school…

Page 8: Engaging

what engagement are we offering in school?

Page 9: Engaging

Keep in mind we think differently…

Traditional Teacher may think:

Use the dictionary.

Student may think:

Where can I access Google or Wikipedia?

Teacher says:Go look up the definition of the

word “digital”.

Page 10: Engaging

Traditional Teacher may think:

“The students can’t even remember the names of the capital cities.”

Student may think:

“Why do I have to know this when I can Google the answer in 2 seconds?”

Ian Jukes & Ted McCain – “Windows on the Future Thinking About Tomorrow Today”

Keep in mind we think differently…

“today’s students think and process information

fundamentally differently from their predecessors.”

“Having a digital learner absorb content from a lecture is like trying to feed a four year old

tofu at McDonald’s.It’s not likely to happen!”

but may have a harder time applying that in the classroom?

Page 22: Engaging

Because it is hard for students to conform,

Page 23: Engaging

to creating the “traditional ways”!

Why not use the technology they know and love to

teach them?

Use your imagination!

Page 38: Engaging

They will!

Page 39: Engaging

Plus, they will show you what they know!

Wouldn’t it be nice to know they’ve grasped a concept without

the pressure of a test?

Page 40: Engaging

“We need them to create real world, real time digital products that

allow them to reflect their understanding of both content and

process.”

Ian Jukes & Ted McCain – “Windows on the Future Thinking About Tomorrow Today”

Page 41: Engaging

That after two weeks they recall:

Did you know…

Less than 10% of what they read.

About 20% of what they hear.

About 50% of content that they hear and see like while watching a demonstration

that uses two or more media simultaneously

Ian Jukes & Ted McCain – “Windows on the Future Thinking About Tomorrow Today”

Page 42: Engaging

But….

After two weeks they recall 90% if it:

involves the teaching of a concept to others as well as the immediate application of the learning within the context of a real time, real world task.

Ian Jukes & Ted McCain – “Windows on the Future Thinking About Tomorrow Today”

We encourage them to be “life long learners”…

Page 44: Engaging

Let’s continue leading by example.

Page 45: Engaging

Let’s continue fostering the wonder of learning.

Page 46: Engaging

Let’s continue facilitating learning.

Page 47: Engaging

Let’s continue empowering independent thinkers.

“If we are to prepare them to be in the real world, we must know

what’s out there!”

In times of radical change, the learners inherit the earth while the learned find themselves perfectly

equipped for a world that no longer exists.Erik Hoffer
