Moving Forward in Partnership

From thePresident

Prof. Emmanuel Frempong, President of CSUC.

Dear Friend and Partner,

Last academic year was an exciting and challenging one. We are grateful to God for a number of positive things that have happened within the CSUC community.

We are thankful for a strong and growing faculty that is committed to students and CSUC’s mission and vision. Though the intake of students for this year has been tough, we praise God for the enthusiastic number of fresh students who have joined our community. They are eager to learn, and to honour the Lord in their chosen fields of study.

A seven-storey hostel facility has sprung up filling the campus sky line. This is a testament to God’s favour upon the CSUC community, and the prudent management of our resources. The entire project is being financed from internally generated funds. The modern hostel facility when completed will ease the housing needs of our students.

Two faculty members from CSUC were invited by Eastern University in

Pennsylvania, as visiting scholars last October. Soon, CSUC will welcome the first batch of international students from Eastern University. We expect some CSUC students to visit Eastern within the next academic year, as part of an ongoing exchange programme. We also hope to collaborate with Eastern University regarding our new programme in Nursing when it takes off.

In spite of these significant successes, a lot still remains to be done as we move CSUC forward. CSUC faces huge tasks regarding the keen competition in higher education, coupled with the need to develop world-class infrastructure.

The challenge is how do we maintain our Christian identity and core values while maintaining a competitive edge in a rapidly changing society?

In view of these challenges, CSUC is embarking on a Three million-dollar fund-raising campaign in aid of a modern ICT building and Library complex, and to support brilliant but needy students to pursue their dreams

of acquiring higher education within a Christian setting.

As a first step, we are supporting our alumni association to remain strong and viable. We believe that a strong and viable alumni association is critical to the growth and development of CSUC. To this end, we have established an Alumni Page on our website (www.csuc.edu.gh) so we can keep our alumni engaged to become part of CSUC’s success story.

We urge our alumni to visit the site and update it with their relevant information.

We have also created a Donor Page for those who would like to contribute towards the establishment of the ultra modern ICT building, or to support a brilliant but needy student.

Welcome dear friend, to this exciting partnership, as we move CSUC forward for Christ and His Kingdom.

God bless,

CSUC held its 35th Graduation Ceremony to confer degree and diploma certificates on a total of 572 students from the departments of Theology, Business Studies, Computer Science and Communication Studies.

Thirty students graduated with first class, 132 obtained second class upper division while 333 had second class lower division. Thirty seven (37) attained third class while 40 students were awarded pass.

Speaking on the theme “The Winning Attitude,” Dr. Michael Agyekum Addo, CEO, KAMA Group of

Companies, entreated the graduands to develop right attitudes in their personal and professional lives.

Dr. Agyekum Addo said that attitude was critical to determining the success of a person, calling on graduands to demonstrate good attitudes in their chosen fields of endeavour.

Rt.Rev. Prof. Safo-Kantanka, Council Chairman of CSUC, called for the reintroduction of the four-year senior secondary programme and to help raise the standard of education in the country.

Nursing Programme LaunchedCSUC has launched a four-year Bachelor of Nursing programme bringing to five, the number of academic programmes run by the University College.

Launching the programme, the President of CSUC, Prof. Emmanuel Frempong said the objective of the Nursing Programme was to expand the capacity of nursing students for quality delivery of health care, and help meet the growing health demand in the country.

“The programme is also aimed at empowering students to operate within ethical and legal framework, and to contribute to the body of knowledge of nursing through life-long learning for professional excellence and research,” he said.

The President said that CSUC would continue to pursue its course of becoming a world-class University College that trains men and women with moral uprightness, academic excellence and a passion to serve and transform society.

Dr. Samuel Adubofuor, Vice-President of CSUC enumerated the minimum requirements for the BSc. Nursing Programme: as Senior High School graduates and holders of State Registered Nursing (SRN) Certificate and Public Health Nurses with RGN/Post-Basic Nursing Programme Certificate, as well as Registered General Nursing (RGN) Diploma as some applicants eligible for the newly-accredited programme. The programme would prepare students adequately to qualify for certification and registration with the Nurses and Midwives Council for Ghana.

The National Accreditation Board (NAB) awarded the BSc. Nursing accreditation to CSUC on the basis of satisfactory preparation and successful completion of requirements needed for the running of the programme. The Nursing Programme is also affiliated to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi. The University College is making necessary arrangements to start the programme.

The President, Prof. E. Frempong led a CSUC delegation including Mr Joseph Amankwa, (Accountant), and Mr Geffrey Gle (Partnership Development Officer) to visit some Christian institutions in South Africa and Kenya last year. The purpose of the trip was to learn and initiate relationships with top-notch Christian universities within the African context. The delegation also learnt about how these institutions have remained viable while maintaining their Christian values and identity in the face of challenges.

The delegation also found opportunities for institutional partnership, and the exchange of staff and students, as

well as innovative ways for mutual staff development. Four institutions, namely, Daystar University and Africa International University (Kenya); and the Faculty of Theology at Stellenbosch University and Media Village (South Africa) Campus of College of Communication, University of the Nations, are willing to collaborate with CSUC for faculty training and exchange, and student development. The University of Cape Town is also willing to explore further discussions with CSUC for possible partnership collaboration for joint research and training.

We reproduce the abridged version of Dr Addo’s speech at the graduation under the

theme “The Wining Attitude”

am delighted to be chosen to be the Guest Speaker for the 35th Graduation Ceremony of Christian Service University College - to speak on no mean a topic than

“The Winning Attitude.” A short illustration will buttress the message I wish to convey to you.

There was a man who made his living selling balloons at a fair. He had many balloons of different colors - red, yellow, blue, and green. But no white or black balloons because he believed children loved only bright colours. Whenever business was slow, he would release a helium-filled balloon into the air. When the children saw the balloon go up, they all wanted one. They would go to him, buy a balloon and his sales would go up. All day, he continued to release a balloon whenever the sales slowed down. One day, the balloon man felt someone tugging at his jacket, he turned around and a little boy asked, “If you release a black balloon, would that also fly?” He answered, “Son, it is not the color of the balloon, it is what is inside that makes it go up.”

The same principle applies to our lives: It is what is inside that counts. And it is what is inside us that make us go up in society; not our height, size, color or beauty. And what is inside of us that make us go up is our attitude. And attitude is character and character is the mindset. William James of Havard University said, “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings alter their lives by altering

their attitudes of mind.”

YOUR ATTITUDE CONTRIBUTES TO SUCCESSA study attributed to Havard University found out that when a person gets a job or a promotion, 85% of the time it is because of his attitude, and only 15% of the time because of intelligence and knowledge of specific facts and figures. I dare say that success depends on Attitude (60%), Skills (25%) and Knowledge (15%). It is surprising that almost 100% of educational expenses go to teach facts and figures, which account for only 15% of success in life!

My speech to you today is all about your success i.e. your Attitude. It applies to every sphere of life, including one’s personal and professional life, private or official life.

There was a graduate farmer in Ghana who was happy and content. One day, his friend came to him and told him about the glory of greener pastures outside Ghana and the value of sterling power that goes along with it. The friend continued convincing him that if he had a diamond the size of his thumb, he could build a house and buy his own car. Diamonds are precious jewels which make people rich overnight. And then the friend left. That night, the farmer couldn’t sleep. He was unhappy and became discontented.

The next morning, the farmer made arrangements to sell his farm, and went off in search of diamonds in Europe. He looked all over Europe and couldn’t find any.

The President of CSUC, Prof. Emmanuel Frempong says the University College is strategizing to expand its income generating base through fund-raising in order to meet its

growing academic and infrastructural development needs.

President Frempong said that CSUC hoped to raise three million dollars over the next three years to support the University College in the construction of an ultra modern library/ICT building complex. The fund-raising initiative will assist brilliant but needy students to secure higher education.

He therefore called on corporate institutions, organisations, friends and partners of the University College to contribute their quota towards the fund-raising initiative of the University College.

Prof. Frempong announced this during the 35th Graduation Ceremony of the University College which was held in December, 2011.

The President said, in line with the mission of the University College, CSUC would continue to train and equip graduates not only with the requisite academic and professional knowledge, but with faith in Christ and a strong sense of moral uprightness for national development.

Finally he settled in London in search of the so called diamonds. He was emotionally, physically, and financially depleted and finally committed suicide in the Thames River.

Back home, the person who had bought his farm was watering the tomatoes from the stream that ran through the property. Across the stream, the rays of the morning sun hit a stone and made it sparkle like a rainbow. He thought the stone would look good in his living room. He picked up the stone and put it on his mantle piece. After some few weeks, a visitor saw the sparkling stone in the man’s living room and immediately recognized the stone to be diamond, but the host told the visitor that it was an ordinary stone that he picked from the stream in his farm. “Come I’ll show you. There are many more.” They went and picked some more samples and sent them for analysis. Sure enough, the stones were diamonds. They found that the whole farm was indeed covered with acres of diamonds.

Mr. President, distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, what is the moral of this story?

There are five morals:

Moral 1. When our attitude is right, we realize that we are all walking on acres and acres of diamonds. Opportunity is always under our feet. We don’t have to go anywhere. All we need to do is to recognize it.

Moral 2. The grass always looks greener on the other side.

The high rise, roads and highways, nicely mowed grass and well painted houses, with well arranged rooms we see in photographs and films make us believe that outside Ghana is better. How on earth could a country endowed with gold, diamond, timber, bauxite, cocoa, cotton, beaches for salt production, fertile land that produces agricultural products all year round, sunshine throughout the year, lately oil and gas and hospitable, intelligent human resource could be traded for Europe or any other country? You should know that the Greenwich Meridian passes through Ghana, and the Equator horizontally passes through Ghana; so Ghana is at the Cross road of the world. I personally believe that God Himself is a Ghanaian and Ghana is a Paradise.

Moral 3. While we are eyeing the grass on the other side, there are others who are eyeing the grass on our side.

They would be happy to trade places with us. Aren’t visitors coming daily to Ghana under the guise of tourism, donors and foreign investors? Go to our top class hotels in Accra and Kumasi and you will marvel at the number of foreigners that are coming to Ghana.

Moral 4. People, who don’t know how to recognize opportunity, complain of noise when it knocks.

Two marketing graduates were asked to go and sell shoes to a new district. When they went they saw to their amazement that nobody wore shoes in that community. Whereas one came back to complain to the employer that nobody wore shoes and for that matter could not sell because they didn’t know what use the shoes will be for them; the other colleague graduate from Christian Service University College saw the opportunity and marketed the shoes to the Chief, Queen mother, the Assembly man and eventually, the whole community. You must always see the glass as half full instead of half empty.

Moral 5. Opportunity only knocks once.

The next one may be better or worse, but never the same one. That is why it is so crucial to make the right decision at the right time. A right decision at the wrong time becomes a wrong decision.

We all know the Biblical story of David and Goliath. Goliath was a giant of a man. He struck fear in everyone’s heart. One day, a 17-year-old shepherd boy came to visit his brothers and asked. “Why

don’t you stand up and fight the giant?” The brothers were terrified of Goliath and they replied. “Don’t you see he is too big to hit?” But David said, “No, he is not too big to hit, he is rather too big to miss.” The rest is history. We all know what happened. David killed the giant with the slingshot. Same giant, different perceptions.

Finally, my dear graduates remember that you are going out there to create and start your own businesses. You are to create jobs for yourselves and others because there are no jobs out there. The Entrepreneurial Revolution of the 21st Century is on. Eleven years of the century is almost ending. The world is ready to accept, receive, honor and remunerate people with talents and positive attitudes; people who can identify opportunities, people who can use their right hand side of the brain to imagine and seize opportunities.

There are opportunities out there, in fact several of them, seize them and use them to better your lot, that of your families, communities and Ghana as a whole. Remember that the foundation of your success is knowledge which you have already acquired. The rest will be skills (25%) and most importantly positive attitude - i.e. being reliable, hard working, developing culture of savings, determination, persistence, patience and other virtues.

WINNERS DON’T DO DIFFERENT THINGS, THEY DO THINGS DIFFERENTLY.

May God bless us all. Thank You.

Thank You.

Speech by Dr Michael Agyekum Addo (contd.)

A single act of kindness throws out roots in all directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it

makes them kind themselves. - Lawrence G. Lovasik

Eastern University at St. Davids, Pennsylvania, invited Rev. Dr. Margaret Aboagye and Christine Adjei to PennsyIvania as visiting scholars last year. The visit forms part of a partnership agreement between CSUC and Eastern University, a top-notch Christian University in the United States.

The visit provided opportunities for the two scholars to learn and interact with their American colleagues as well as engage in a number of academic and social activities of the University.

The event formed part of activities to mark the SRC’s week celebrations last year.

The sports fiesta which was held at the Prempeh College Park, Kumasi also featured disciplines such as volley ball, table tennis, snooker, ludo, draft, playing cards, among others.

Participating teams included students of BBA levels 100, 200, 300, and 400; Theology levels 100/200, and 300/400; Communication Studies levels 100/200 and 300/400; and Computer Science levels 200/300 and 400.

Kofi Agyeman Quao is the Area Manager of Barclays Bank responsible for Northern, Upper East and West Regions of Ghana. He is married to Mrs. Joyce Agyeman Quao of Bank of Ghana, and is blessed with three children: Nana Serwaa, (medical student, Komfo Anokey Medical School), Eddie and Nii (students at KNUST)

Kofi attended St. Peter’s Secondary School, Nkwatia after which he proceeded to study for the Chartered Institute of Secretaries professional Exam at the Kumasi Polytechnic.

He joined the Barclays Bank after his professional exams, but Kofi did not rest on his oars. He continued studying, taking the Institute of Bankers Examination both intermediate and final parts while working. “Combining studies and work was quite a challenge. However, from the encouragement of my parents and my wife, I continued with my studies.”

During this time of his career, he was transferred to Kumasi as the Branch Manager for Prempeh II Street Branch. Later he was elevated to Area Manager of Ashanti Region. It was at this time that Kofi took up the challenge to study for his Bachelor of Business Studies (marketing option) at the Christian Service University College. He took part-time classes at night

and during weekends. But he was to face even greater challenges during this period as he was entrusted with more responsibilities at work. “This was a difficult time for me as a professional, husband, and a part-time student. However, I stayed focused, and with prayers, I was able to surmount the challenges and to successfully complete the programme.”

The BBA programme equipped me with the professional skills, training, and the exposure to assume greater responsibilities in my profession as a banker. Not only was I competent for the tasks assigned me at work, but I felt more confident and self-motivated. Kofi is currently pursuing M.Phil programme in Marketing at the Methodist University, affiliated to the University of Ghana. He hopes to graduate at the end of the 2012 academic year.

I count myself blessed for the opportunity to study within a Christian environment at Christian Service University College – where my faith was nurtured and challenged, to serve with integrity.
