Pastor’s Messages

Dear Ascension sisters and brothers,

The Sunday after Confirmation Sunday was abuzz. Our youth now meet with Jess and me in the nursery area, as couches are more conducive to a youth group than a large table is. Because I retrieved items from various rooms during the 9 am hour, I walked through three classrooms. All were excitedly studying with their wonderful teachers the story of Zacchaeus and Jesus (Luke 19:1-10). Some were singing the song, others talking about Zacchaeus in the tree. And Lydia sent this photo of her group meeting in the library—————>

Meanwhile, the class for parents of children was meeting in the basement. The adult class would have met, except that Claire had a cold.

So much worship and education and fellowship takes place between 9 am and 10 am; and the energy then flows over into worship. Thanks to each one of you: parents, teachers, youth, children and seniors!!

Blessings, Pr. Nancy

PS I held my own among the theologians at Georgetown. I represented both an ecumenical and a congregational dimension among the academics. If you haven’t already done so, you can peruse the link for the conference at: http://fore.yale.edu/calendar/item/thomas-berry-and-the-great-work/. You can read the paper by clicking HERE. And see mention HERE.

Sunday School News

Children meet in the Sunday School wing then break off into classes at 9:00 a.m.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

• November 24th -- This is the Sunday before Thanksgiving. Instead of regular classes, we'll be making advent wreaths together during the Sunday School hour. This is a time for everyone to join together and get ready for Advent, so feel free to bring friends and relatives to join in the fun and fellowship! I'll make coffee for the adults and have bagels and cream cheese for those who might be hungry. Feel free to bring your own breakfast treat to share, but please steer clear of nuts so we can be allergy friendly. We will have frames for sale for $5. Bring your own wire cutters and/or branch trimmers if you have them and we'll have some available for everyone to use.

• December 1 -- no Sunday School today due to Thanksgiving Break. This is the first Sunday in Advent so don't forget to light your first candle in your advent wreath!

• December 8 -- Today is our first rehearsal for our Christmas pageant! We will be doing a different pageant this year using traditional Christmas hymns for the music. If you have a favorite Christmas hymn you want us to sing, let me know and I'll see if I can add it to our show!

• December 15 -- Today is our Christmas pageant! Please make sure you plan to stay for the service today. It will be a great morning full of fun and music so you definitely don't want to miss it! Feel free to bring friends or family to join us for the pageant.

• December 22 & 29 -- No Sunday School these weeks for Christmas and New Year's breaks. We'll see you in January!

HARK! Important News

Reflections on a Visit to Bethlehem

After church on Sunday (November 10), John and Barbara Fritsche will share with us what they did in Bethlehem, Palestine, for 3 months earlier this year. Please join them for a brief overview of their experience ending with some time to ask questions.

Holiday Giving Tree

It’s that time of year again! We will be doing gift cards for various places again this year. Gift cards should be in increments of $25.00. Cheryl will be setting up the tree with tags in a couple of weeks, but if you’d like to get a jump start, please contact Cheryl Couillard (contact information is in the directory, or reach out to the office)! The deadline is December 1.

Composting at Ascension

Ascension is inviting members of our congregation to use Ascension's compost pick-up service to dispose of your kitchen food waste scraps. Remember to use compostable bags if you drop off your kitchen scraps in a bag. You may obtain these bags at the Burlington Food Coop and in most hardware stores.

To help get this started, the Care for Creation Committee will be selling boxes of 25 2.6 gallon compostable small kitchen bags at cost, about $4 per box. To order a box please complete the sign up sheet in the fellowship hall, and we will be happy to bring them to church the following week.

You can bring your compost in these compostable bags to Ascension Lutheran's green compost bin, located in the front of the building, just to the left of the office entrance. Or, you can bring your compost in a bucket, without the compostable bags, and place the compost directly in the larger bin. Please keep in mind that plastic bags are not compostable.

Additionally, you can also bring your compost (up to 30 gallons) to any of the Chittenden Solid Waste Drop Off Centers. There is a fee of $1.50 per 5 gallon container. Green Mountain Compost in Williston will accept up to 30 gallons of compost for free.

Finally, you can also get a free 4 gallon compost bucket at any of the Chittenden Solid Waste Drop Off Centers or at Green Mountain Compost. More details about composting are at https://cswd.net/composting/drop-off-composting/

2020 Stewardship Campaign Results as of Nov. 3

Thank you again to everyone who has helped--and is helping--with Ascension's 2020 Stewardship Campaign!

While our church family waits for the return of pledge cards and Time & Talent forms, Financial Secretary Gene Heyerdahl has some numbers through Nov. 3 to share:

• We have received 37 pledges for a total of $131,020.

• Of the 37 pledges, 35 were renewals from 2019 and 2 are new.

Looking at the pledging response from past campaigns (usually 42-45) that means we have heard back from about 88% of our regular pledging units or families. Also, we know that the amount pledged to date is 70% of the draft current receipts budget goal of $189,939.

More numbers: 24 Time & Talent form have been returned, or 55% of the 44 received for 2019. In case up have misplaced your forms, blank ones are available in the Hospitality Room.

Numbers …. Eventually they all add up to our commitment to our Transformation and our efforts to conform to God’s good, pleasing and perfect will.

If you haven’t returned your pledge card and time and talent commitments, please try to do so as soon as possible

giving the Church Council time to finalize the 2020 budget for our church family’s approval at its annual meeting. If you have questions regarding your financial commitment to Ascension, you can email Gene directly (email is in the directory).

Now as always, thank you for your commitment and support to Ascension and its missions.

Memorials and Celebrations

Envelopes with labels are now in the transparent folder just outside the sanctuary for gifts that the congregation may want to give in honor of or in memory of someone. A parishioner can indicate the Donor, Amount, in honor/in memory of, date to be in bulletin, flowers (if chosen). Please place the envelope with the gift in the collection plate.

Thank you!
