Dear Students, Prospective Students, and Community Members,

It’s no secret that students come to College of Marin (COM) with different educational goals. Community colleges exist to serve all students. Some are seeking a degree, certificate, or transfer to a four-year university. For others, the first step is learning or improving their English. There are also those looking to reenter the workforce or change careers. And for many, it’s simply to keep on learning.

Each person brings a new perspective to campus and the College is constantly evolving in response. COM is here for everyone—find where you fit in! Read more on page 16.

We also pride ourselves on empowering students to reach their educational goals. Our cover features Mariya Mulla, a student who is not only accomplishing her goals, but is helping others do the same. Learn about her journey at COM on page 20.

Sincerely,

David Wain Coon, Ed.D.Superintendent/President

COM is Here For Everyone Find Where You Fit In!

After 90-plus years of providing student-centered programs and services, College of Marin (COM) doesn’t take for granted how community colleges have evolved over the last century.

So, if you’ve never taken a class, attended a performance, or participated in an event at COM—here are some things you should know.

This fall, COM welcomes the first cohort of students who began their journey in ninth grade through College of Marin Providing Access and Supporting Success (COMPASS). COM is proud to partner with Marin County high schools to promote a college-going culture and ensure that college readiness and completion are achievable milestones.

Concurrent enrollment is another option for high school students—one that comes with substantial cost savings. If a high school junior starts taking classes at COM, they could easily accumulate 12 units of transferrable college credit by the time they graduate. Students are able to explore subject areas, disciplines, and advanced classes not offered at local high schools. It also provides a competitive advantage on college applications as evidence of initiative, commitment, and the ability to succeed in a more rigorous and independent learning environment.

Our youngest students not only set their sights on college early, they are enrolling as freshmen in high school.

COM has transfer admission guarantees to six University of California campuses.

Within the California State University (CSU) system, associate degrees for transfer

give students who meet the CSU’s minimum eligibility requirements guaranteed priority admission to a CSU campus.

It’s a smart investment. Students who complete their first two years at COM and then transfer to a four-year college or university save thousands of dollars on tuition.

If a student attends full-time and fulfills the transfer requirements

(60 units at $46 per unit), the tuition is $2,760 versus upwards of $14,000.

But what about those who didn’t go straight to college after high school?

Recent high school graduates don’t have to go far to get a great education.

Karina Cruz chose to enroll at COM because of its location and affordability.Since attending the College, she’s had the opportunity to explore areas of interest, figure out her career path, and develop the skills needed for the next chapter in her educational journey.

“The fundamental skills I have attained from all the classes have helped me improve my verbal and written communication, time management, and leadership,” said

Cruz. “COM has broadened my spectrum and it

has made me a more confident young

woman.”

Her path to COM was fraught with challenges. After her parents came to the United States in search of a better life, Estrada was left to care for her younger siblings when she was still a girl herself. She tried to keep a positive attitude for her sisters as they wandered alone for several years in Mexico. With no relatives to help look after them, she remembers many nights where they would go to sleep without having eaten.

Estrada’s mantra is simple: Never give up. She is finishing the last classes needed to complete an associate degree in early childhood education and is planning to transfer this fall.

The College’s free noncredit ESL classes, as well as credit ESL classes and a fee-based Intensive English Program, have helped countless residents and international students from over 100 countries fulfill their educational, career, and personal goals.

Lizbet Estrada only knew a few English words when she started the ESL program in 2011. She admits that learning the language was not easy and took a lot of effort. At times she felt like giving up, but thankfully she returned after a two-year break and kept pursuing her goal of enrolling in credit classes.

“What started as a mechanism of adaptation to this culture soon became a great learning interest,” said Estrada. “I saw at COM the opportunity to achieve my career goals.”

COM is the largest English as a Second Language (ESL) provider in Marin County.

Marin County has the most highly educated population in the nation, and COM encourages everyone to keep on learning. Emeritus Students College of Marin (ESCOM) is the student organization of Marin’s mature adults. An integral part of the College, ESCOM provides access to a diverse array of classes, activities, events, and clubs designed to serve the unique needs of older adults.

Originally started for the purpose of training women to enter the workforce as teachers, today’s community colleges offer sophisticated, high-caliber career education. Partnerships with local industries help shape programs that address regional economic needs and serve the community by contributing to a viable job market.

Understanding the importance of forging these partnerships and giving them room to grow, COM’s Makerspace is a place where innovation can happen naturally. Programs like Makerspace facilitate teaching, learning, and exploration of entrepreneurial ideas. Within every interaction lies the potential for creation of symbiotic relationships among educators, students, and the public.

Career technical education, workforce education, vocational education–call it what you will– career education has changed a lot in the last century.

ESCOM Vice President Luanne Mullin views lifelong learning as the key to maintaining a resilient mind and fully engaged life.

“COM offers Marin, a county with 25 percent of the population over 60, a progressive institution dedicated to exploring and promoting the personal potential of people, regardless of their age,” says Mullin. “COM contributes to the vitality of our community, individually and collectively. How can you not want to be part of it?” ■

Growth and development are broadening opportunities for lifelong learners.

Chairs clanked together, backpacks dropped to the floor, and students chatted as the room filled with their family, friends, and supporters from College of Marin (COM). These students would become part of a growing number of local high school graduates to complete the Summer Bridge program.

Launched in 2015 with 10,000 Degrees, Summer Bridge was designed as an intensive three-week session to prepare first-generation college students beginning classes in the fall. Since then, the program has expanded each year and has helped 374 students improve their scores on English and math placement tests, develop good study habits, learn about resources available on campus, and create their academic plan.

All this translates into savings in the form of tuition expenses, book fees, and study time.

During the Summer Bridge graduation, Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Student Learning and Success Jonathan Eldridge explained how the program reinforces the advantages of getting familiar with College of Marin (COM) campuses before the fall semester begins.

“Students gain so much from being on campus and learning what and where resources are, and who they can reach out to for support.”

Eldridge always asks the same two things of students who complete the program: Keep showing up and reach out to students that may be struggling.

One Summer Bridge graduate took that request to heart.

Mariya Mulla addressed Summer Bridge students at their graduation in July 2018, telling her story of how the program helped her become successful through self-advocacy and how the guidance led her to study what she is most passionate about.

She also spoke of the connections she made with COM Counselor and Puente

Co-coordinator Luz Briceno-Moreno, Ed.D., EOPS Counselor Javier Urena, and Behavioral Sciences Instructor Marco Gonzalez. Developing a support system that spans multiple learning communities, resources, and services creates a network of people students can rely on when they need help.

“This is your second home, the place where you can accomplish your dreams,” says Mulla.

Mulla will complete her sociology and psychology studies at COM this spring and plans on transferring to a four-year university this fall. Thanks, in part, to all the people who have helped her throughout her time at COM, she feels well-prepared for her future studies. However, getting through the transfer process was a challenge—one that she turned into an opportunity to help other students.

“I still needed a lot of help with my personal insight question,” said Mulla. “I remember missing class to get help and feeling stressed at the end of November. I thought, if we had a course offered in summer to help students with that, then they won’t feel so stressed during the semester.”

As a COM student ambassador, Mulla worked with Briceno-Moreno to develop

a proposal that would relieve some of the stress inherent to the transfer process. They proposed curriculum changes to the Transfer Success and Educational Planning class that would allow for incorporation of time to work on transfer applications prior to the start of the fall semester.

Elements of the transfer process include a transfer admissions planner, personal insight questions, TAG applications, calculating transfer GPA, and more—all of which require a considerable amount of time to complete and refine. Getting a head start on these during the summer can undoubtedly alleviate pressure and improve the quality of their submissions.

Mulla’s hard work paid off when she received notification that COM accepted the proposal. Briceno-Moreno will be teaching the class to Phase III Puente students this summer. These students have already completed the Puente classes and are working on the final classes needed for transfer.

Briceno-Moreno believes the class will be a success and the new curriculum helpful for students.

Superintendent/President David Wain Coon emphasizes the importance of listening to our students about their experience.

“As educators it is our responsibility to both teach and listen,” says Coon. “Great educators empower students with the ability to create positive change. Mariya exemplifies this empowerment at its best. Not only has she achieved the educational goals she set for herself at COM, she’s helping others do the same.”

Mulla is on track to receive an associate degree for transfer in sociology and psychology, as well as an associate degree in liberal arts, at this year’s commencement. She is the Inter-Club Council representative for Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society, secretary of the Association of Peer Tutors Club, a student ambassador, and a tutor at COM’s Tutoring and Learning Center. ■
