(NewsUSA) – For most job seekers, the
goal is to find the best job as quickly as
possible, but it can be difficult to
implement this plan everyday.
To make the most of valuable time, below
are recommendations on expediting the
process so job seekers can stop searching
and start working:
Make a plan
Take some time to think about all the
ways that you could get hired, and
brainstorm all the different avenues of
finding a job. Include a list of potential
target companies to research, social media
sites to use, recruiters to contact, people
who may know someone who is hiring,
online job boards, job fairs and networking
and industry events.
Prioritize job search methods
Evaluate which job search methods are
most important by thinking about what is
more likely to lead you to the right job. For
example, the greatest number of prospects
who might actually be able to hire you will
likely be at an industry event rather than at
a jobseekers’ networking event.
Apply to the right positions
Honestly assess your skills to determine
the best job postings to apply to. Jeffrey
Greenberg, director of career services at
DeVry University in Philadelphia,
recommends focusing on the job postings
where you have the right skills. “Fight the
urge to apply to any and every job posting
you find. Instead, target those that best
align with your qualifications, and focus
on creating a good balance of quantity and
quality of your applications,” said
Greenberg.
Focus on connecting with people
Focus on networking with people who are
in your industry, and reach out to contacts
at sensible times. Make calls first thing in
Manageyour timeduringyour jobsearchWe’ve all heard that
“finding a job is a full-time
job,” but what is the most
effective way to manage
that time?

Staying positive can be hard in today's world, buthere's one small way to work a little positivity in yourdaily routine. Each day, before you sit down to work, grab a small piece of paper and write a nicethought down about someone you work with. Later, when you see that person, work your positivethought into your conversation. It's a small way ofmaking the world just a little nicer, and it just takes aminute to plan and a short time to deliver.

WASHINGTON (MCT) – American
manufacturing activity expanded in February
at the fastest pace since 2004, though
manufacturers have grown more concerned
about rising inflation, according to a closely
followed index released Mar. 1.
The Institute for Supply Management said
its manufacturing gauge rose to 61.4 percent
in February from 60.8 percent in the prior
month. Any reading over 50 indicates that
more manufacturers are expanding instead of
shrinking.
The manufacturing sector has now grown 19
straight months, outshining most other U.S.
industries during that time. In 2010, the
sector even gained jobs for the first time since
1997.
Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had
forecast the index to edge up to 61 percent.
In a generally upbeat ISM report, however,
companies flashed a warning sign about the
cost of raw materials and inflation. The ISM’s
prices index jumped to its highest level in
more than two years. And some 66 percent of
respondents said they paid more for raw
materials; only 2 percent said they paid less.
“We continue to see significant inflation
across nearly every type of chemical raw
materials we purchase,” one chemical maker
told ISM.
Norbert Ore, who heads the ISM survey
committee, said the price index “indicates
significant inflation of raw materials costs
across many commodities.”
The institute asks about 350 purchasing
managers if their business got better or worse
this past month. These senior executives are
involved in all sorts of decisions, including
hiring, the purchase of raw materials, the
delivery of supplies, and the management of
inventories.
Fourteen of 18 industries tracked by Tempe,
Ariz.-based ISM expanded in February,
spearheaded by apparel, oil and coal, and
transportation.
The index for new orders, which is a strong
indicator of future sales, rose to 68 percent
from 67.8 percent. That was the highest level
since 2004.
Production also increased, up to 66.3 percent
from 63.5 percent the prior month.
The inventories index, meanwhile, fell to
48.8 percent from 52.4 percent, which is
usually a sign of improved sales. Companies
tend to draw down inventory in a recovery
when demand for their products is higher
than they expect.
What’s more, the backlog of orders rose to
59 percent from 58.0 percent. Backlogs tend
to rise as demand increases.
The employment index, meanwhile, jumped
to 64.5 percent from 61.7 percent in January
– the highest reading since 1973. The
employment index has only topped 60.0
percent three times in the past decade.

Once you’ve chosen a style
(formal, informal,
professional, elegant, etc.)
you’ll need to make sure you
have dates for all the
positions you’ve held that you
intend to include. A good
rule of thumb to follow is to
list the last ten years of
employment unless you have
had more than five positions
in those ten years. If you
have had five positions in the
last five or six years then list
only those, but be prepared
to answer questions from
your interviewer on why you
have “job hopped” so much.
The interviewer may not use
that term exactly, but that is
what they are thinking, so
have a good answer ready.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
(ARA) - It’s no
secret: Americans
love coffee. Every
day it seems a new
coffee shop opens
around the corner,
and it’s nearly
impossible to walk
a block without
passing someone
with a cup in hand.
Despite the rising
cost of specialty
coffee, Americans
continue reaching
for that cherished
cup of joe.
Coffee drinking at work
The positive effects of coffee drinking are
felt by hardworking Americans across the
nation leading to increased workplace
productivity and happiness.
According to a 2011 survey on American
office workers and their coffee habits
conducted by Alterra Coffee Roasters:
• 65 percent of workers drink coffee while
at work.
• The average worker consumes three cups
of coffee per day.
• 38 percent of workers say they wouldn't
make it through a typical workday without
coffee.
• 30 percent drink coffee in the workplace
because it helps them focus and increase
productivity.
Coffee culture
Coffee not only benefits employees, but
also office culture. The coffee pot has
displaced the water cooler as the primary
location to interact with co-workers,
according to the survey. Two in five office
coffee drinkers say they have had
interesting or helpful talks with colleagues
or bosses while near the coffee maker.
While this pastime increases bonding,
survey results suggest traditional coffee
pots can also cause resentment and
irritation amongst co-workers. One in four
workers say there is someone at the office
who never prepares fresh coffee when
needed, while 21 percent said they dislike
dealing with people who make a mess
when handling the office brew.
To help eliminate such feelings of
frustration, many employers opt for one-
cup coffee systems that brew from fresh-
sealed, single-use packs like the Flavia
Fresh Release System. This new workplace
trend allows employees to become their
own barista by creating a number of
customizable specialty drinks -- including
coffee, espresso, latte, cappuccino, tea and
more -- without leaving the office.
Investing in coffee?
As coffee drinking grows in popularity, it
is also rising in cost. Specialty-coffee sales
are increasing 20 percent per year with the
average cost of an espresso-based drink
now at $2.45, according to the 2011
Coffee Business Statistics Report. The
report also showed 18 percent of American
coffee drinkers consume at least one
gourmet coffee beverage per day, a
significant expense.
In fact, more than three in five Alterra-
survey respondents say they routinely buy
coffee outside of the office, spending an
average of $14 per week. Many say they've
abandoned the office in search of a good
cup because they didn't enjoy drinking the
coffee provided at work, and 16 percent of
these workers admit doing so caused them
to miss important calls or meetings at the
office.
Investing in fresh, good-tasting coffee at
the office obviously pays off for employers
in the long run - saving employees cash
while keeping them closer to tasks at hand.
This small investment produces large
returns, boosting employee productivity
and satisfaction.
Fun coffee stats:
• What if you could have a celebrity
barista come to your office? Nearly one in
five office workers voted to have America's
sweetheart, Sandra Bullock, play barista in
their office. There was a three-way tie for
second place, with Angelina Jolie, Jennifer
Aniston and George Clooney all ranking
as highly desired office coffee servers.
• More than seven in 10 office workers
who drink coffee down the most cups of
joe on Monday.
• More than one in five office workers
admit the quality of their work would
suffer if they didn't have coffee.
• Contestants on the new season of
“Celebrity Apprentice” better keep a stash
of coffee in their briefcases. Celebrity
bosses like Donald Trump, Mr. Burns from
“The Simpsons” and Sue Sylvester from
“Glee” are all perceived by Americans to be
especially grumpy without their daily cup
of coffee.
• More women than men admit they
wouldn’t be able to go 24 hours without
coffee.

(ARA) – The new year has arrived, and it’s
time to get to work. You may be back in
the office or pounding the pavement
looking for a new job. Either way, it’s time
to polish your resume so it appeals to
employers, because what may have worked
for you in the past might not be relevant
today.
“Your resume is a living document,” says
Heather VanRiper, assistant director of
career services at The Illinois Institute of
Art - Chicago. She points out that workers
are always learning new skills on the job, at
professional development conferences and
seminars. Many of those skills can and
should be a part of your updated resume.
But if you’re not currently looking, why
take the time to spruce up an old resume?
“Who knows when the next opportunity
will open up?” asks VanRiper. “You could
be at a networking event, a dinner party or
even on a train commuting home when
you bump into an opportunity that you just
can't pass up. Having your resume ready to
go makes you look more polished and
professional.”
VanRiper suggests you take a good look at
your experience to see if you need to add
any new job responsibilities or reflect
recent promotions. Have you joined any
new professional organizations or been
elected to a board? Polish up the skills
section of your resume with any new
software applications you've learned. And
don't forget to add any foreign languages
you know.
Since the digital age is here, your resume
should keep up. “Add a link to your work in
your resume. From an employer’s point of
view, if they can read all about you and also
click on a link and see your work, you
become visual,” VanRiper says. “Your
potential employer can now see your
capabilities.” Just make sure the materials
you are directing employers to, are
updated.
A short employment history does not
mean you’re short on skills. Don’t discredit
any experience that you’ve had, says
VanRiper. She adds, “There’s a lot of value
in transferable skills like problem solving,
customer service and attention to detail. If
you can demonstrate those skills in your
resume, you show that you're an asset to
any workplace.”
Once you’re done with the updates,
VanRiper has one final piece of advice.
“Proofread. Proofread. Proofread. Errors
are inexcusable and will cost you the job.”
Take the time to update yourresume for the new year
How Important is itthat we Love our Jobs?
Work/life balance expert Jim Bird (www.worklifebalance.com) sayswe hear all the time how important it is to have jobs we love. Yet mostpeople he knows don’t love their work. They either accept it ortolerate it. And that’s okay, Bird says. He points out that while it’snot necessary to be passionate about your job, you should bepassionate about how well you do the job. Why? Because that’swhat you do for yourself.
Lacking passion for your job doesn’t necessarily mean you’re livingyour life less well than the individual who is passionate about work.Your passion may surface in regard to other areas of your life. Birdoffers these suggestions for generating more ardor for living:
• Write the essay or book that’s been in the back of your mind.• Take a class in a subject that engrosses you.• Teach a class in the subject that engrosses you.• Cook dinners that will make your friends swoon.• Go to your favorite sporting events.• Let the people you’re closest to know how much you adore them.
The key is to set aside time for doing whatever it is you love todo. The first step is deciding you’re going to do it. The importantsecond step, Bird says, is to go for it.
