A JOB VS. ACAREER:FIGURINGOUT HOW TOGET THERE

Once you know what you want to pursue – a job or a
career – you need to figure out how to achieve your end
goal. Consider the following questions:
What is your work experience?
If there is a particular industry in which you worked
previously, it will be easier to move from one job to
another in that same industry. For example, if you
worked in a restaurant, you are more likely to change
positions within the food-service industry. A career
change – for example from finance to social services
– might require some additional education and training.
What is your education?
Even if your first job did not match your educational
background, your education and training can help you
move to a new position. For example, maybe you
received training in business applications and office
procedures, but your first job was filling orders in a
warehouse. The skills you gained on the job, and the
education you have, might suit you for a position with
an order fulfillment company, where you may encounter
long-term career options.
Do you have the skills to switch from one industry
to another?
If you want to switch from one career to another, you
can. Just remember that you need to leverage the skills
you gained to meet the needs of a new career. Create a
list of your strengths and skills acquired in your previous
positions and make notes on how they would relate to a
new career.
If many of your skills are non-transferable – perhaps
because they were specialized or you worked in a small
environment that did not keep up with changing
technology – consider returning to school for some
training. Regardless of whether you can afford to quit
working to go back to school, first consider taking a
night class or two at the local community college and

Job Fairs are excellent places to land jobs, because employers are there specifically toline up candidates for interviews, and some even interview and hire on-the-spot. While Job Fairs can be overwhelming with many people waiting to see the sameemployer, the pressure of on-the-spot interviewing, noise and sometimesconfusion, they are often a great tool and a good way to meet companyrepresentatives face-to-face. Before you go, review some tips on participating, which will help make your Career Fair experience a positive one.
ResumesBefore the Job Fair, do a little research to find out how many companies are goingto be on site. Plan to take enough resumes for all the companies you know you’reinterested in, and at least one resume for every two companies that you’re not asinterested in. While you may think that you are indifferent in a certain company, the display or a chat with a company representative may change your mind. Besure that your resume is current and accurate. Have someone proofread thembefore you make copies! Typos and other errors can be considered sloppiness onyour part and your resume quickly “screened out” because of it. Finally, don’t beafraid to distribute your resume to company representatives, that’s what you arethere for!
Prepare a “One-Minute Commercial” Your “One-Minute Commercial” should be a compilation, summarized, of yourresume and cover letter. It should be a brief but descriptive statement about yourabilities and skills as well as what you’re looking for in a new job. It is very muchlike your objective statement. First, illustrate the important details that support yourqualifications for the position. This is your chance to let the company representativeknow why you are uniquely suited for the position you are seeking. Brevity, specificity and perhaps most importantly relativity are the keys!
