A little timemanagement might bejust the thingDo you need to manage your time at work? Who doesn’t, right? But if youreally want to shine at work, one of the first things you’re going to have totake control of is your time. It always seems like there’s not enough timeto accomplish everything when you’re working hard, but Bob Nelson, in“1,001 Ways to Take Initiative at Work,” says there are some steps you cantake to rescue your time. Here is some of his advice: • When you get to the end of your day, make a to-do list for tomorrow. Put
whatever's most important to accomplish at the top of your list. That way, when you walk in, you’ll know just what you need to do and where to start.
• Make a commitment to arrive at work a half hour early every day. That way, you can get started on whatever’s most important and work without interruption for that period of time.
• Don’t jump down on your list to lower priority tasks until you have made enough progress that you are satisfied on your higher priority tasks.
• Use a calendar and plan. It will organize you, and you won't have to spend time asking what you're supposed to be doing. You’ll already know.
• Go through your in-box at least once a day and prioritize it. • Say goodbye to unimportant meetings. If you don’t need to be there,
don’t go. It will waste your time, and your list won’t get any smaller. • Focus on what only you can do. Then, when possible, delegate to others. • Take a couple of hours every week to sit down and look at your big
picture goals. Are you getting there. Set or reset goals appropriately. • Learn to say no. Be polite, but firm. Otherwise, you won’t have the

(ARA) – From paltry paychecks to annoying
coworkers, more than three quarters of Americans
are stressing out about something related to their
job, according to a new study.
The vast majority of Americans (77 percent) are
stressed by at least one thing at work, finds the
Harris Interactive-Everest College Work Stress
Survey. The most common issues are: low pay,
commuting, unreasonable workload and concern
over being fired or laid off. But these are not the
only issues American workers are facing -
annoying coworkers also made the list, followed
by difficulty with a boss, poor work-life balance
and lack of opportunity for advancement.
"We've seen numerous surveys that confirm
workplace stress has increased during the last
several years," says Wendy Cullen, vice president
of employer development for Everest College.
Concerns over low pay and job security are
consistently one of the top stressors for
Americans. In most regions of the U.S., 16
percent of Americans listed low pay as their top
stressor, and concerns over job security were a
close second. For example, 13 percent of college
graduates ranked losing their job as the biggest
stressor, which is in line with Americans without
college degrees.
"One change we are seeing is that more and more
Americans are pursuing careers in industries like
health care, which offers more long-term
stability." Switching careers or going back to
school to gain access to a more secure or better
paying career is one technique that many
individuals use to deal with insecurity in the
workplace.
How to deal with stress
"The impact of stress cannot be overstated," says
Davis Brimberg, a Los Angeles-based
psychologist who focuses on workplace issues.
"Almost all psychological problems are worsened
by stress. People of all occupations and income
levels are greatly affected," he says. Workplace
stress can have negative consequences on your
performance at work, and your life.
There are a number of techniques for dealing
with workplace stress. First, learn to recognize the
symptoms - you may feel a constant sense of
nervousness, which can often lead to feeling
withdrawn, irritable or apathetic. Stress is also
associated with physical problems, such as fatigue
and muscle tension.
Physical exercise is also shown to help with stress
management. Aerobic exercises have been shown
to release mood-raising endorphins, so getting 30
minutes of exercise a day can actually help
decrease your stress levels. It is also important to
get enough sleep, which can help your body deal
with the effects of stress throughout the day, and
makes you better able to manage emotional
swings.
There are also important strategies in your
workplace that can help you deal with stress. Do
not over-commit to non-essential tasks. Prioritize
important tasks, and learn to delegate non-
essential ones. Also, you can schedule regular
breaks into your daily routine to allow yourself to
get away from your workstation or office.
Additionally, Brimsburg suggests that getting
help can be effective. "Counseling can be very
helpful in relieving signs and symptoms of stress-
related issues."

What, in fact, does it mean to be reasonable? What does it mean to be unreasonable?
And what does it mean to reason?
According to James Allen in “As a Man Thinketh”, when we declare someone as being
unreasonable, we usually mean that he or she is violating the ideal of thinking about
something and arriving at the “truth” of a situation by using intellect.
So it follows that people who are dubbed reasonable in situations are looked upon as
using their higher powers of intellect to make a decision and in ways that are likely
considered gentle and compassionate.
Now, we've all been unreasonable in life at one time or another – that is we've lost
touch with our higher selves and resorted to our lower faculties during which we
behaved in ways that were likely considered unthinking and selfish. Most people feel
unhappy or undone when they abandon reason for something more akin to animal
behavior. But how does a person remain reasonable throughout some of the stressful
situations that seem to be just around each corner in life? Here are some tips for
trying to maintain your equilibrium in life's trials:
• Stop before you speak or act. Think about what you are about to say or do?
Is it unkind? Is it vengeful? Is it self-centered? If so, you may have just thrown
off the cloak of reason and donned unreasonableness.
• Is what you are considering saying or doing sweet and forgiving? Is it gently
persuasive?
• Is what you are about to do or say based on any type of prejudice?
• Are you trying to prove or disprove something?
• Have you carefully weighed and considered everything important about the
situation?
• Is what you are about to do or say kind, moderate and just?

Anna Collins saw the bottom drop out
of the market, she needed a new career.
Today, she is a comedian who performs
at local comedy clubs.
Jan Rutter was a longtime singer and
dancer on cruise ships, but she had to
hang up her tap shoes when she lost
her voice. Now Rutter is a private
investigator.
After Fort Lauderdale, Fla., resident
Bennett Mazor lost his job as an
inventory manager, he found he wasn't
passionate about some aspects of his
former job. He recently found a new
job as a staffing consultant.
When a job is no longer viable,
workers are forced to reinvent
themselves. For some, it might lead to
an even brighter future.
Think about your “unique selling
proposition” — what you are better at
than your competition, said Peter
Fogel, a Delray Beach, Fla., speaker
and copywriter who has reinvented
himself several times.
“The first thing you have to do is
define the reality of the situation,”
Fogel said. “Do an assessment of your
industry and your company. Do I still
like my industry? Where is my industry
going to be next week or next year? Do
I still have the passion?
Then decide whether you want to
work for someone else or start your
own venture, said Fogel, author of
“Reboot Your Career.” “I’m used to
being on my own, sink or swim. But a
9-to-5 person may not be a good fit”
for an entrepreneurial pursuit, he said.
“I examined what I’m good at and
what I like to do,” said Collins, 55. As
a baby boomer, Collins has found a
niche for her humor, launching
“Beyond Complicated,” a boomer-
themed comedy show with Fogel on
Internet radio, TalkZone.com. She also
has authored two humor books.
Rutter was devastated when at age 47
she lost her voice and could no longer
perform. But she moved on by
considering what she could do: She
loves talking to people, and has always
been interested in mystery and
detective stories.
She enrolled in private investigator
classes, reasoning that she at least had
the wardrobe for a private investigating
gig. “If I ever have to go undercover, I
have plenty of wigs,” Rutter said.
After graduating, she attended
association meetings to get to know
other private investigators. Now 52,
Rutter is building her business slowly
by doing contract work for other
agencies.
It helps to be passionate about your
choice. Mazor, 46, was an inventory
manager for a South Florida retailer for
12 years. What he enjoyed most about
the job was coordinating planning with
vendors, merchandisers and others; he
least enjoyed analyzing the data. “I
liked being the glue, keeping everyone
on task,” he said.
He applied for inventory management
jobs, got interviews, but wasn't getting
offers. He turned to a career coach who
told him: “I don’t feel your passion.”

could transfer his skills, and one was
“recruiter.”
Through contacts he gained during his
job search, Mazor set up informational
meetings with recruiting agencies. He
was offered a job at TransHire in Fort
Lauderdale within seven days of
making the decision to switch careers.
“When you find your passion, it’s
pretty powerful,” he said.
Getting an employer to take a chance
on someone who has no experience in a
field is difficult, especially in this job
market. But Mazor was given a
two-week trial run to find out if the
day-to-day activities of a recruiter
really suited him. They did, and he was
offered a permanent job because the
agency owner liked “his desire to
learn.”
Think of yourself as a marketer when
exploring your potential career, Fogel
said. “Am I going to make money at
this? Find someone at the top of the
food chain and ask, ‘Should I get into
this now?’ “
Unexpected barriers to entry can
hamstring a career change. Like
Rutter’s, a new career may require
going back to school.
And switching careers may entail a pay
cut. When Collins was a real estate
agent in the hey-days, she was making
more than $100,000 a year. “I was at
the Capital Grille three times a week.
After I got out of real estate, I’m eating
grilled cheese....I went from Coach
bags to sitting in coach,” she quipped.
Although she makes half the income
she once did, Collins is happy with her
choice: “Having a lot of money is the
best, but you have to like what you’re
doing.”
Rutter also used to make more money
performing on cruise ships, but she
thinks her private investigation
business will continue growing to
provide more income. Her goal is to
eventually employ others.
Mazor says he expects as a recruiter to
earn compensation equal to or greater
than his former inventory management
job. With base pay plus commission, “I
have a greater earnings potential than I
did in corporate America, and that was
very attractive,” he said.

MTI awards leveraged over $113K of

Seed Grant award recipients,” said MTI

announcement. “Seed Grants are highly
competitive with only one in four companies
being funded. Successful awardees must
contribute matching funding of at least $1
for every $1 of funding from MTI. They are
now off and running! MTI continues to
work with these entrepreneurs and also links
them to other resources to help them achieve
commercial success and grow good jobs for
Maine people. ”

(ARA) – Despite less than stellar job
growth over the past few years, college
graduates remain in demand. In fact,
employers plan to hire 19.5 percent
more 2011 college graduates than they
did in 2010, which is up nearly 6
percent since 2009-2010, according to
a recent Job Outlook study by the
National Association of Colleges and
Employers (NACE). But today’s job
market is not your parents' job market.
Huge demographic and employment
trends are changing the way America
works, and would-be employees will
need to remain flexible.
Here are some tips to help you stay on
top of the career market:
First, expect to change jobs numeroustimes in your career. In today’s career
world, job stability does not always
equal job security. The U.S.
Department of Labor Statistics reports
that the average person born in the
latter half of the baby boom has held
an average of 11 jobs, and that
three-fifths of those job changes
occurred between the ages of 18 and
27.
“The U.S. economy is fundamentally
changing, and employees can no longer
expect to work their way up the
company ladder,” says Patti LoPresti,
campus president at Everest
College-Portland.
Second, know where the jobs are.“Our nation is experiencing huge
demographic and economic changes,
which are creating major shifts in the
types of jobs available today,” says
Veronica Tarango, director of
education at Everest College-West
Los Angeles. “Students should prepare
themselves for a changing job market.”
In particular, even though the U.S.
economy is expected to grow by 10
percent between 2008-2018, these jobs
will not be evenly distributed across all
industries, according to Bureau of
Labor statistics.
With many baby-boomers set to retire
in the coming decade, and a growing
youth population, many service-related
professions from teaching to elder care
are going to see significant growth.
“One of the fastest growing sectors in
the coming decade will be the health
care sector,” notes LoPresti.
Projections indicate that about 26
percent of all jobs in the coming
decade will be in the health care
industry, which is expected to add
approximately 4 million jobs to the
U.S. economy.
Third, consider going back to schoolfor additional career training. Today’s
job market requires that employees
keep their skills current, and as a result,
more and more adults are going back
to school. “Students come to us to keep
their skills up-to-date or get the
credentials they need to advance in
their careers,” says Tarango. “They find
that it is increasingly necessary in
today’s changing job market.”
The Bureau of Labor Statistics’
occupational projections show that
jobs requiring some form of post-
secondary education will have greater
growth through 2018 than those
without. The greatest job growth is
expected to be in careers that require
an associate degree, which is expecting
to see job growth of 19 percent. Job
projections are also higher for careers
that require post-secondary vocational
credentials, at an estimated 13 percent,
than those requiring only on-the-job
training, which are expected to see only
8 percent growth.
“Employers understand that a one- or
two-year program can give new
employees exactly the mix of academic
learning and hands-on experience they
need to excel in today’s changing job
market,” says LoPresti.
