ELECTRIC VEHICLE

A CAR THAT RUNS PURELY ON

ELECTRICITY

Page 3: Electric Vehicles

HOW DO THEY WORK ?

•Use electricity not petrol•Energy comes from a power outlet via a cord to the car•Energy stored in a battery•Energy powers the electric motor, moving the car.

Page 4: Electric Vehicles

EV’S COMPARED TO NORMAL VEHICLES

Page 5: Electric Vehicles

WHAT DOES AN EV LOOK AND SOUND LIKE?

Looks like a normal car

Sounds silent when running as has less moving parts

Page 6: Electric Vehicles

ARE EVS BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

•Helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

• Produce no carbon emissions when powered using renewable energy

Page 7: Electric Vehicles

ADVANTAGES

• Cheaper to run because electricity is cheaper than petrol

• Better for the environment

• Reduce noise pollution

• Less environmental impacts across their life-cycle (manufacturing, use and disposal)

Page 8: Electric Vehicles

DRAWBACKS

•Currently more expensive than normal cars•Not many places to charge your car•Can only travel 100-160km between charges•Charging can take hours• Silent operation – potentially dangerous for pedestrians

Page 9: Electric Vehicles

LET’S DISCUSSWhy do you think more people aren’t driving EVs?

WHAT IS A HYBRID VEHICLE ?

• The combination of an internal combustion engine (ICE) with one or more electric motor/generators and a battery pack.

•An HEV uses less gasoline because the electric motor does some of the work.

Page 12: Electric Vehicles

HISTORY

• 1997 – First modern HEV introduced in Japan: Toyota Prius • 1999 – First modern HEV sold in U.S.: Honda Insight

Page 13: Electric Vehicles

COMPONENTS OF A HYBRID•Gasoline engine• Fuel tank•Electric motor •Generator•Batteries • Transmission

Page 14: Electric Vehicles

PARALLEL HYBRID

• Has a fuel tank that supplies gas to the engine like a regular car• It also has a set of batteries

that run an electric motor• Both the engine and electric

motor can turn the transmission at the same time.

Page 15: Electric Vehicles

SERIES HYBRID

• The fuel tank goes to the engine, but the engine turns a generator• Then the generator can either

charge the batteries or power an electric motor that drives the transmission• The gasoline engine does not

directly power the car

ABOUT HYBRIDS

• HEVs offer the efficiency of electric-powered vehicles without having to recharge by using conventional engines and fuels.

• Efficiencies are gained from motor down-sizing and regenerative braking.

Page 17: Electric Vehicles

FACTORS FOR EFFICIENCY

• Three key factors:• Regenerative braking

• Engine size

• Vehicle weight & aerodynamic design

Page 18: Electric Vehicles

CONTI’• Engine size = may be smaller than in a

conventional vehicle

• Engine is sized to accommodate average load – not peak load

• Vehicle weight/aerodynamic design:

• Built using special lightweight materials

• Uses advanced aerodynamics to reduce drag

Page 19: Electric Vehicles

ELECTRIC MOTOR ASSIST

• Additional Power to assist engine Accelerating, Passing and Hill Climbing.

• So, allows Smaller and More Efficient Engine to be Used.

Page 20: Electric Vehicles

AUTOMATIC START/SHUT OFF

• Automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarts it when the accelerator is pressed. This prevents wasted energy from idling.

Page 21: Electric Vehicles

HYBRID RELIABILITY

• Hybrids have some of the highest safety ratings of all vehicles

• High-voltage system contains many safety features

• Battery charge is computer controlled – extends battery life

• Batteries under warranty for 100,000 miles, is your engine??????

Page 22: Electric Vehicles

CONTI’• The cost of maintenance is reduced due to operation of

hybrid technology

• Regenerative braking reduces wear on brakes

• Idle stop extends engine life

• Electric accessories reduce load on engine

Page 23: Electric Vehicles

ADVANTAGES• Excellent gas mileage

• Fewer tailpipe emissions

• Lighter batteries than electric vehicles

• Uses less fuel to recharge batteries

Page 24: Electric Vehicles

DRAWBACKS

•Reduced, but not emission-free•Hybrids are partial zero-emission vehicles (PZEVs) – they produce zero emissions only when engine is not running• More expensive than conventional Vehicle

CONCLUSION

So, the HEVs have more efficiency, Low Fuel Economy, High Reliability and Less Air Pollution. Optimum Utilization of these Vehicles will yield in good Results, especially Reduction of pollution.
