EIU’sathleticphilosophyissteadfastandsimple:studentFIRST...athleteSECOND.Toensurethatcommitment,theathleticdepartmenthasestablishedsupportservicestoassiststudent-athletesduringtheircollegiatecompetitiveexperience. The EIUAcademic Services staff provides studentswith academicguidance in regard to class schedulingandregistration;declarationandselectionofamajor;degreeandeligibility requirements; tutorial services; financial aid; andoverallacademicprocedures.
COUNSELING SERVICES MembersoftheAcademicServicesOfficestaffmeetwithindividualstudent-athletesonavarietyofacademic,athletic,career and personal issues. Time is also spent helpingindividuals improve timemanagement, study skills, andassignmentpreparation.Whennecessaryandappropriate,student-athletes are referred to specialized resources andservices,bothonandoff-campus.
TUTORING SERVICES A variety of tutors are available through the academicdepartmentsoncampusandarefreeofcharge.
ACADEMIC CENTER InNovemberof2006,Eastern Illinoiscompleted itsnewAcademic Services Center which provides a study andacademichelpcenterforPantherstudent-athletes.Thecenterprovidesaquietstudyareaforstudent-athletes,acomputerlabandacademicworkarea.ThecenteralsohousestheEIUAcademicServicesstaffforquickaccessbyEIUathletes.
For theninth consecutive year,EIUhasbeennamedoneofthetopMidwesternpublicuniversitiesinitsclassbyU.S. News & World Report. Eastern is again ranked14th amongallMidwestern public universities offering afull range of undergraduate degrees andsomemaster’sdegreeprograms.TheregionencompassesIllinois,Indiana,Iowa,Kansas,Michigan,Minnesota,Missouri,Nebraska,North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota andWisconsin. Therankings–partofthemagazine’s2009edition of “America’sBestColleges” – arebased on schools’ academic reputations,student selectivity, faculty resources,graduation and retention rates, financialresourcesandalumnigiving. ThenumbersshowthatEIUhasretaineditsfocusonpersonalattention.Forexample,thestudent-facultyratiodroppedto15:1andonly4percentofallclasseshave50ormorestudents. Perry,whowasbornandraised in theMidwest, receivedhisM.A.andPh.D. degrees from theUniversity of Illinois,Urbana-Champaign. In hissubsequentcareeratTexasA&MUniversity,heproceededthroughthetenuredfacultyranks inmathematics,andthenserved in increasinglyresponsibleadministrativerolesinvolvingmultipleareasofbudget,personnelandplanningfortheuniversity,academicaffairsandfacilities. WhileatTexasA&M,hereceivedrecognitionforhisserviceinteachingandinadministration. BARBARA BURKE enters her third year as the athleticdirectoratEasternIllinoisUniversity,aftersheassumedherdutiesinJuneof2008tobecometheninthfull-timedirectorinthe110yearsofPantherathleticcompetition. Workingonafiveyearmasterplan,Burkehasmadeanimmediateimpactinherfirsttwoyearswithseveralfacilityenhancementprojects.AmongthoseprojectsareanewvideoscoreboardatO’BrienField,updatedlockerroomsforseveralsportteams,anewfloorandgraphicsinLantzArenaandnewfencingforthebaseball,softballandsoccerfields. InFebruary,2010,BurkeunveiledthePanthersBluePrint forSuccess as acampaignforathleticfacilityenhancements. Burke spent the previous 10 years atWyoming,servinginavarietyofcapacitiessincefirst joining thestaff inMarch1998.Since July 2006, she has served as thedeputy director of athletics and seniorwomen’s administrator. In that role, shehelped to oversee strategic planning forthedepartment,aswellastheday-to-dayoperationsofWyoming’s17-sport,$19millionathleticprogram. Inaddition toher yearsof serviceatWyomingasasenioradministrator,BurkehashadathleticadministrationexperienceattheUniversityofTexasatElPaso(1997-98),MarshallUniversity(1994-97),andWestVirginiaStateUniversity(1992-94).DuringstintsatWyomingandUTEP,Burkewasnamedinterimathleticdirector at the institutions, serving as both schoolsmadetransitionstonewathleticdirectors. AmemberoftheNationalAssociationofCollegiateDirectorsofAmerica (NACDA) andNationalAssociation ofCollegiateWomenAthleticAdministrators (NACWAA),Burkehas servedonnumerousathleticcommittees,includingtheNCAADivision
Conference transition team as the newleaguewasformedin1998. Burkewas recently selected to serveon theNCAAWomen’s Basketball RulesCommitteewithherappointmentbeginninginSeptember2010. BurkealsobringsyearsofcoachingandplayingexperiencetoEasternIllinois.Shewasafour-yearmemberofboththesoftballandbasketball teamsatWesternMichiganUniversity(1976-80),leadingtheBroncostotheWomen’sCollegeSoftballWorldSeriesin1980.ShewasinductedintotheWMUHallofFamein1988. A native of Kalamazoo,Mich., Burkestartedher coaching career atKalamazooCentralHighSchool,withherfirstcollegiatecoaching job coming in 1980as the headsoftballcoachandassistantbasketballcoach
atTennesseeTempleUniversity.ShefollowedthatwithcoachingstopsatClearwaterChristianCollege inFlorida,CornerstoneCollege inMichigan, IndianaUniversitySoutheast andWestVirginiaStateCollege.Threetimesshewasnamedthedistrictcoachof theyearduringhersoftballandbasketball coachingcareer.
