Volume 29 Issue 1 January 2018 2018 Shaping Up as a Great Year for Miata/MX-5 You might think that a car that has been on the market for 28 or so years might have played itself out by now. But if recent press is any indication, the Miata MX-5 is just catching its stride. Perusing the pages of the January 2018 issue of Car and Driver magazine is a good place to start. In the Letters section, one subscriber laments the time and page space that the magazine devotes to the “little Japanese roadster, especially over so many tremendous automobiles.” The writer continues, “I never drove a Miata, but for professional automobile writers to be as flagrant about a particular car is at least odd, and at most, suspicious.” The editorial response to the letter is short and to the point, “It’s affordable, small, fun, quick, reliable, and a conspiracy.” Going one better, the editor points us to a head to head comparison of the Miata with the Mazda 3 further on in the magazine. Both of these Mazdas have been performance leaders in their segments. But while the Mazda 3 has lagged behind the competition, to Car and Driver the Miata “is the best affordable sports car on the market.” With 0 to 60 times in the 6 second range, light weight and an under $26,000.00 starting price, the Miata is hard to beat from any perspective. And the buying public seems to sense that. According to carsalesbase.com, 1990 Miata sales in the US reached almost 36,000. That figure had dropped to under 5000 by 2014. But 2016 and the ND Miata changed that to just under 9,500. 2017 sales of the Miata are reported at 11,294. Car and Driver was so impressed with the Miata that it was named as one of ‘The 10 Best Cars for 2018’. That honor is enhanced by the company the Miata is in which includes the Porsche 718 Boxster, the Alfa Romeo Giulia, the Corvette Grand Sport, the Mercedes AMG E-Class, the Audi RS3 among others. Car and Driver put most of their time into the driving characteristics and mechanics of the automobiles they selected. The BusinessInsider.com website judged the Miata by a different standard; beauty. I know. I have the same question, “What makes these guys expert about automotive design?” But let’s go with it. I like what they have to say. In a December 2017 web article ‘The 10 most beautiful cars on sale today’, the humble Miata ND convertible gets the number 10 spot. Contending that a car should be more than a way to get from point A to point B, the website endorses the Miata as part of ‘rolling art’. “The MX-5 conveys the car’s sporting heritage in a charismatic and aesthetically pleasing package.”

EEEEEEEEEEeeer4………………………………………………………………………,d How Let me tell you a bit about a running joke among our family. Anytime we travel with the Miller’s (Jim & Mindy) and someone needs something, Mindy has it. She always carries her “magic bag”. Whatever you need, she’s got it in there. It’s almost like the magician’s hat, but without the doves and rabbits. It’s more like a Walgreen’s in there, what with the pharmaceuticals, firsttems, snacks, health & beauty items, greeting cards and magazines. I, for one, have been saved more than once by the “magic bag”. It’s bottomless, I swear! The lesson to be learned here, of course, is to be prepared! The question is: prepared for what? With what? So let’s talk about what you carry in your car, or maybe you don’t. I used to be better with this in my ’99, not so much with the ‘speed and I can’t really explain why. more power continued . . . . . . . . . .

2018 Shaping Up as a Great Year for
Miata/MX-5
You might think that a car that has been on the
market for 28 or so years might have played itself
out by now. But if recent press is any indication,
the Miata MX-5 is just catching its stride. Perusing
the pages of the January 2018 issue of Car and
Driver magazine is a good place to start.
In the Letters section, one subscriber laments the
time and page space that the magazine devotes to
the “little Japanese roadster, especially over so
many tremendous automobiles.” The writer
continues, “I never drove a Miata, but for
professional automobile writers to be as flagrant
about a particular car is at least odd, and at most,
suspicious.” The editorial response to the letter is
short and to the point, “It’s affordable, small, fun,
quick, reliable, and a conspiracy.”
Going one better, the editor points us to a head to
head comparison of the Miata with the Mazda 3
further on in the magazine. Both of these Mazdas
have been performance leaders in their segments.
But while the Mazda 3 has lagged behind the
competition, to Car and Driver the Miata “is the
best affordable sports car on the market.” With 0
to 60 times in the 6 second range, light weight and
an under $26,000.00 starting price, the Miata is
hard to beat from any perspective.
And the buying public seems to sense that.
According to carsalesbase.com, 1990 Miata sales
in the US reached almost 36,000. That figure had
dropped to under 5000 by 2014. But 2016 and the
ND Miata changed that to just under 9,500. 2017
sales of the Miata are reported at 11,294.
Car and Driver was so impressed with the Miata
that it was named as one of ‘The 10 Best Cars for
2018’. That honor is enhanced by the company
the Miata is in which includes the Porsche 718
Boxster, the Alfa Romeo Giulia, the Corvette
Grand Sport, the Mercedes AMG E-Class, the
Audi RS3 among others.
Car and Driver put most of their time into the
driving characteristics and mechanics of the
automobiles they selected. The
BusinessInsider.com website judged the Miata by
a different standard; beauty. I know. I have the
same question, “What makes these guys expert
about automotive design?” But let’s go with it. I
like what they have to say.
In a December 2017 web article ‘The 10 most
beautiful cars on sale today’, the humble Miata
ND convertible gets the number 10 spot.
Contending that a car should be more than a way
to get from point A to point B, the website
endorses the Miata as part of ‘rolling art’. “The
MX-5 conveys the car’s sporting heritage in a
charismatic and aesthetically pleasing package.”
Again, the Miata is in the company of automotive
royalty. Others selected were the Jaquar F-Type,
the Alfa Romeo Giulia, the Lexus LC500, the
Ferrari Laferrari Aperta, the Aston Martin DB11,
the Lamborghini Huracan, etc.

I will make a complete movie schedule available as we get closer to the 23rd. So, get out of the house, meet up with other club members and make an evening of it. BMC 2018 Calendar of Events
Buckeye Miata Club Car Talk and Coffee 2018
We have put together a schedule for five more Saturday morning sessions to get together to talk cars.
What is it?
BMC Car Talk and Coffee is simply a chance to get out of the house on cold winter mornings, have a cup of coffee and breakfast, and talk about our Miata’s and cars in general. The gatherings are open to BMC members and their friends. Discussions are very informal and might include topics such as tires, suspensions, air intakes, exhaust systems, detailing etc. We would certainly like to have outside subject matter experts if you know of someone. Sometimes we just solve world problems in general...... but as you can see by the shape of the world we are not very good at implementing the wonderful solutions we come up with.
Although it doesn't have to be, over the years this has evolved into pretty much a "guy" thing. However, sometimes the ladies come and sit together to talk. If any of you ladies do plan to come please let me know and my wife Kathy will be glad to attend that week to spend time with you.
When is it?
Saturday mornings starting at 9:00 AM to about 10:30 or 11:00 AM. Come and go as you please.
This year’s tentative schedule is: January 13 January 27 February 10 February 24 March 10
Where is it?
La Chatelaine Bakery 65 W. Bridge St. SR 161 Dublin Ohio There is plenty of parking beside and behind the restaurant. As you enter the front door our meeting area is to your left in the far front corner of the restaurant. Just grab some coffee or breakfast and head on back. If you have any questions or suggestions contact Kevin Rhodes 614-406-6069 [email protected]
