In-Focus
NABL Accreditation of Material Testing Laboratory
In a Civil Engineering domain material testing is of utmost importance to check the quality of construction material like cement, bricks, soil, bitumen, aggregates, tiles, paver block, manhole cover, steel, etc. Agencies working in the construction work like builder, contractor, government agencies like Road and Building department (R&B), Railway, Irrigation department, Airport Authority of India, Central Public works department (CPWD), Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC), Rajkot Urban Development Authority (RUDA), etc. are in need of confirming quality of materials used for which testing as per relevant standards is mandatory. Government of Gujarat has Gujarat Engineering Research Institute (GERI), working in the area of material testing. Because of huge demand of testing services Government of Gujarat has also started to approve private laboratories for building material testing provided the laboratories gets NABL accredited. Material Testing Laboratory, part of Darshan Consultancy Cell, at Department of Civil Engineering was approved by Government of Gujarat in 2016 for material testing work with a condition to get approval from NABL. After a primary inspection earlier this year, a team of experts visited the institute for 2-day inspection and as a result of this the institute was awarded NABL accreditation. Institute has state-of-the-art facilities for testing varieties of building material like steel, bricks, cement ,concrete, soil, bitumen, paver block, coarse aggregate, fine aggregates, concrete mix design and bituminous mix design. Scope of testing awarded to the Laboratory covers 7 major areas and it is one of the highest in this region. NABL accreditation will enable institute to serve as recognized material testing laboratory and thus open a new scope of work providing multifold advantages to students, faculties and institute.
National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) is an autonomous body under the aegis of Department of Science & Technology, Government of India which has been authorized as the sole accreditation body for Testing and Calibration laboratories. NABL accredits the laboratories that comply their Quality Management System with Internationally accepted Standards and Guidelines, i.e. ISO/IEC 17025:2005. NABL provides accreditation in all major fields of Science and Engineering such as Biological, Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, Non-Destructive, etc. Accreditation provides formal recognition to competent laboratories for providing testing and calibration services. Large number of agencies both government and private insist on testing result from NABL accredited laboratories. It is also mandatory in many applications/domains.
