Sydney CBD is the newest site for CQUniversity’s rapidly growing Medical Sonography program.

CQUniversity this year launched a unique medical sonography program based at a $1.5 million laboratory on the 11th floor of its CBD campus at 400 Kent Street, Sydney.

As this is Australia’s only sonography program available for undergraduate entry (with postgraduate exit), there’s been an enthusiastic response from students keen to help relieve a critical health workforce shortage.

The modern six-bed medical sonography facility features state-of-the-art digital technology and simulated learning clinics. It has advanced 3D/4D-capable Philips ultrasound units worth $450,000, ten ‘Phantom’ body torso training units worth $75,000 and a full multifunctional laboratory.

While students receive plenty of hands-on training at the CBD facility, they also gain extensive clinical experience with established sonography professionals.

The Bachelor Of Medical Sonography and Graduate Diploma Of Medical Sonography offered by CQUniversity is a four-year linked degree/post-graduate diploma program. The combined program is the first of its kind in Australia, providing students the opportunity to enter the profession with no prior degree in a health sciences area.

This is also the only sonography program in Australia that offers the option of studying the first year of the program by distance education, allowing you the flexibility to balance your study, work and life commitments.

For more information contact CQUniversity on 13CQUni.

The Australian Guild Of Music is a non-profit organisation providing distance education solely in the field of music education.

Our aim is to provide students with skills/knowledge that can be used in any music industry-related career (music teaching, live performance, composing/arranging, recording, examination, music retail, music computer software and multimedia, music publishing, and many other music careers). Students gain a wide range of knowledge in all subjects; this prepares students when choosing to develop on any one single skill plus use another skill in music to gain income in the music industry.

The Guild holds live lectures at the Kooyong campus, allowing students to have more involvement with lecturers and other students. Our class sizes are small, so you will enjoy the benefits of quality contact with your teachers and fellow students. Distance students are to maintain weekly contact via MOODLE e-learning through chats, forums and messaging.

Lecturers/tutors contact or discuss in person with students any concerns they may have regarding subjects and always work with the student on ways to strengthen any weaknesses. The Guild has always maintained a high percentage rate of passing students.

All lecturers are musicians and educators of high standing in their field of expertise. The Australian Guild Of Music Education offers career-focused training in a whole range of courses from

Certificate I, II, III and IV through to Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Bachelor Degrees.

The Kooyong campus has undertaken renovations in 2012, increasing resources available to students. New additions include a stage, recording studio, computer room, practice rooms and recreation areas.

The courses we teach, and the ways we teach them, are practical and in-step with current industry practice. of sound and acoustics to surround sound and audio electronics. The course is hands-on and practical in approach. Students will work with a variety of digital audio workstations including Pro Tools, Logic and Abelton. All aspects of sound production are covered, including specialisations in recording, broadcast, post-production and live sound. Is there a practical component to the course?Absolutely. At least 75% of the activity undertaken at the college is practical in its nature. Learning is undertaken in workshops, studio sessions and through projects. Project activities include live sound production, electronic music production, recording and in post-production. Collarts undertakes regular offsite visits to venues, studios and production houses as well as having visiting industry presenters. What kinds of jobs have previous graduates of this course gone on to do?Generally post-study employment opportunities follow the current industry trends. While some students go on to get to work in recording studios, others find their career opportunities in live sound and post-production in particular. Are there scholarships that students can apply for?Yes, Collarts offers part scholarships to outstanding students. Visit the website for more details: collarts.edu.au/about_collarts/scholarships. To apply for an audio production scholarship prospective students will need to present a sample of their work.

What is the name of the course?Lorna Walsh, Faculty Of Arts And Education: Bachelor

Of Early Childhood Education.

What can we expect to learn from this course? The course has been adapted to meet new national and international standards in early childhood education, and includes a new primary teaching component, allowing students to teach children up to age eight years (subject to VIT and ACECQA approvals). This is a great new development with this course as it gives students more employment opportunities and the chance to get into teaching through another avenue. The course teaches students to apply an understanding of child development, curriculum theories and pedagogies in designing and implementing child-centered, play-based and developmentally appropriate programs in childcare, preschool and school contexts.

Is there a practical component to the course?Yes, the course includes a minimum of 110 days of supervised professional experience as a core component. Students may also wish to consider Deakin’s Global Experience Program (GEP), which is an opportunity to undertake a teaching practical experience in a diverse range of educational settings beyond Victoria. The personal and professional benefits of engaging in an international experience are demonstrable. It challenges you to think about, deal with, and appreciate cultural and educational knowledge and/or practices and perspectives different from your own. And the result is a more global approach to the teaching/learning

process. Students who have the opportunity to participate in the program often claim the experience as the highlight of their course!

What kinds of jobs have previous graduates of this course gone on to do?There is an increasing demand for qualified and accredited early childhood educators and teachers. Graduates of this course will have career opportunities in childcare facilities, kindergartens, early learning centres and as teachers in early primary school settings. Work in early childhood settings provides future career scope for positions such as centre director, coordinator, pre-school field officer, adviser or senior adviser within early childhood facilities. Opportunities also exist for employment in government agencies, primary schools, community services or not-for-profit organisations.

Are there scholarships that students can apply for?Deakin offers a wide range of scholarships to help students from many different backgrounds pay for their university fees. We also recognise high-achieving students with a wide range of academic excellence scholarships, prizes and awards. Travel grants are also available for those considering an overseas exchange or global experience.

Does the course have any famous graduates?I think everyone who has been involved in early childhood is famous in the eyes of the child. We do have award-winning graduates from our course, those who have received national recognition for their work – but I guess they are not ‘famous’ in the traditional sense.

Elliot Heinrich has always had a passion for music performance and recording. Now his pursuit of formal

qualifications has also given him the power to open doors into the industry.

“I first took an interest in audio production as a way to complement my musical aspirations, initially in recording my own bands and then as a way to make great records for other bands,” he says.

Heinrich is currently enrolled in CQUniversity’s Bachelor Of Music (Creative Music Technologies), which is offered in conjunction with Sunshine Coast Institute Of TAFE.

He’s been working in live sound since completing a Diploma Of Technical Production at Nambour TAFE in 2008.

Beginning in medium-sized audio production as a freelance audio engineer, he moved into a house-engineer position at The J, Noosa, and then on to mix at all of the Sunshine Coast’s live music venues and a number of festivals, including Woodford Folk Festival, Caloundra Music Festival and, most recently, the main stage of the Caloundra Fringe Festival.

Heinrich’s own band, the Vagrant City Scandal, recorded at Heliport Studios and have released a self-produced EP called Wildfire, which is now available on iTunes. Another of his

“We’re just finishing a pop/classical fusion record with accomplished songwriter Tyrone Noonan, Australia’s premier classical guitarist Anthony Garcia and recent ATIA award winner, William Barton,” he says.

“I’ve worked on a number of EP recordings with artists from all over the country since beginning work at Heliport Studios on the Sunshine Coast.”

The Bachelor Of Music (Creative Music Technologies) program provides students with the opportunity to study music technology skills for contemporary and computer-based music industries, focusing on live sound recording, reading and writing music notation and creating music with new audio technologies.

CQUniversity’s Bachelor Of Music program offers specialisations in contemporary, jazz and popular music, music studies and creative music technologies. The program is available on campus in Rockhampton and Noosa in Queensland, and in Brisbane (or anywhere in Australia) via distance education. International students can study the program on campus in Rockhampton.

publishing powerhouse Linda Woodhead from Mocha Publishing will also lend her expert eyes.

Brisbane School Of Hairdressing founder Lina Wood says the competition isn’t just another chance for students to practice their craft.

“While the competition allows our brilliant students the opportunity to show off their limitless talent, it also affords everyday people, especially high school graduates, the chance to be inspired,” Ms Wood remarks.

“Brisbane School Of Hairdressing staff will be on hand to answer enquiries from spectators captivated by the incredible creations on display,” she says.

One student aiming for glory is Joel Reilly, a student from Brisbane’s northern suburbs who has demonstrated the makings of an avant-garde genius.

“After spending years in a job I didn’t enjoy, at 25 years old I decided to do something I really wanted to and I haven’t looked back,” Mr Reilly reveals.

“I will be entering the Avant-Garde category of the competition, taking my inspiration from bold Aztec elements currently hitting fashion runways around the world.

“I’m looking forward to some challenging competition on the day, and maybe even inspiring someone to take the leap into this crazy world of hair,” he concludes.

Award categories will include Fashion Cut And Colour, Avant-Garde and a People’s Choice Award.

The event will be held at 4pm on the Main Stage of the Queen Street Mall. Votes for the People’s Choice Award will be able to be submitted at brishair.com.au.
