The month of Ramad- hān is going but very swiftly we will be blessed with the days of Zul -Hijjah. Some of us may also be preparing for the blessed journey and pilgrimage to the blessed lands of the Haramayn. And the rest of us will celebrate the blessed days at our homes and perform the qurbānī. But before this there is one more blessed month which Allah S has given to us in which by carrying out one certain action one can acquire reward for one whole year. This month starts on the day of ‘Īd-ul-fitr, it is known as the month of Shawwāl. This month is the tenth month in the lunar calendar, and like the months prior to the blessed month of Ramadhān held great importance in the eyes of Prophet Q, in the same way this is also a very blessed month which holds a lot of virtue. And a believer can reap much reward and fill his scales on the Day of Judgement. It was the practice of our beloved Prophet Q, that after the month of Ramadhān he would fast an extra six days. He would say that if a person was to do this then he will be re- warded by Allah S as though he has fasted for the whole year. Abu Ayyub al-Ansari narrated that Allah’s Messenger Q said: "He who fasts in Ramadan, and six of Shawwāl ., it will be as though he has fasted a whole year." [Muslim] How is this possible? Every act which is carried out is multiplied by ten. So for every fast a person keeps in the month of Ramadhān its reward is multiplied by ten—so for the whole month is 300. Then an extra six fasts in the month of Shawwāl would total 360, and there are only 360 days in the lunar calendar. The question still remains; it is understandable if the month of Ramadhān is 30 days but what about when it is only 29 days? The answer is very simple, there is no doubt in the fact that Allah S is Ar-Rahmān (Most Gracious) Ar-Rahīm (Most Merciful), even if the month of Ramadhān is only 29 days, Allah S will reward His servant as though he has fasted for the full 30 days. If this is the kindness of Allah S then don’t you think that we should take this opportunity to make the most out of this Mercy? These fasts can be kept together or if one wishes he can spread them out during the whole month. For example, if you think that it will be difficult due to work then you can keep them on the weekends over the month, but one should make sure that they are kept before the month ends. ‘ĪD-UL-FITR (Continued on page 2)

EDITORIAL.... THE GREAT MONTH OF
SHAWWAL As we say farewell to the blessed month of Ramadhān, and once again feel as though we
have not made the most of this blessed month, we need look at the Mercy of Allah S as
He takes away one blessing from us but He grants us with another. The month of Ramad-
hān is going but very swiftly we will be blessed with the days of Zul-Hijjah. Some of us
may also be preparing for the blessed journey and pilgrimage to the blessed lands of the
Haramayn. And the rest of us will celebrate the blessed days at our homes and perform
the qurbānī. But before this there is one more blessed month which Allah S has given to
us in which by carrying out one certain action one can acquire reward for one whole year.
This month starts on the day of ‘Īd-ul-fitr, it is known as the month of Shawwāl.
This month is the tenth month in the lunar calendar, and like the months prior to the
blessed month of Ramadhān held great importance in the eyes of Prophet Q, in the same
way this is also a very blessed month which holds a lot of virtue. And a believer can reap
much reward and fill his scales on the Day of Judgement.
It was the practice of our beloved Prophet Q, that after the month of Ramadhān he would
fast an extra six days. He would say that if a person was to do this then he will be re-
warded by Allah S as though he has fasted for the whole year.
Abu Ayyub al-Ansari narrated that Allah’s Messenger Q said: "He who fasts in Ramadan, and six of Shawwāl., it will
be as though he has fasted a whole year." [Muslim]
How is this possible? Every act which is carried out is multiplied by ten. So for every fast
a person keeps in the month of Ramadhān its reward is multiplied by ten—so for the
whole month is 300. Then an extra six fasts in the month of Shawwāl would total 360,
and there are only 360 days in the lunar calendar.
The question still remains; it is understandable if the month of Ramadhān is 30 days but
what about when it is only 29 days? The answer is very simple, there is no doubt in the
fact that Allah S is Ar-Rahmān (Most Gracious) Ar-Rahīm (Most Merciful), even if the
month of Ramadhān is only 29 days, Allah S will reward His servant as though he has
fasted for the full 30 days. If this is the kindness of Allah S then don’t you think that we
should take this opportunity to make the most out of this Mercy?
These fasts can be kept together or if one wishes he can spread them out during the whole
month. For example, if you think that it will be difficult due to work then you can keep
them on the weekends over the month, but one should make sure that they are kept before
the month ends.

VOLUME. 1 ISSUE. 3 JULY/AUGUST 2015
This day the day of ‘Īd is a day of happiness, but many people go towards the extremes in ex-
pressing this happiness by committing sin. Even worse, these are all planned in the month of
Ramadhān: going to the cinema, clubs, listening to music, missing the fardh salaat etc. Yes, this
day is a day of happiness but for what? The fact that the month of Ramadhān is over and you
have fasted for a month, you spent in charity, you humbled yourself, you gave preference to oth-
ers over yourself, you gave preference to the commands of Allah S over your needs. Now the
day of ‘Īd is here so be happy now that you can eat, sleep and gain more reward by showing Al-
lah S that you have changed for the better in the month of Ramadhān and that you are not just
“a Ramadhān Muslim”. However, it is sad to see that many people indulge themselves in the
displeasure of Allah S, so much that whatever they have gained in the month of Ramadhān is
washed away in a matter of moments. The masājid will now become empty, the environment of
the masjid between ‘Asr and Maghrib of people engaging in tilāwah of the Glorious Qurʻān and
of du‘ā will once again be put away with the dastarkhans (table cloths) for another Ramadhān.
This year, let us all make a firm resolution that from this Ramadhān onwards we will never dis-
obey Allah S.
You may question that how is this possible if man is made to sin. To think this is correct and it’s
right, this is what makes us different from the angels, however one must understand that this
does not mean that we keep on sinning. A sin which happens unplanned is a mistake but when it
is planned this means you had full control despite this you carried it out - this is worse than a
mistake.
SADAQAT-UL-FITR
Don't forget to pay your sadaqat-ul-fitr before the salatul-‘īd, it is wājib on every adult and
child to give the sadaqat-ul-fitr. The head of the household will take out the sadaqat-ul-fitr on
behalf of those who are not at the age of understanding or do not posses any wealth. Also if the
head of the house wishes to give sadaqat-ul-fitr on behalf of all his family, who have wealth and
are at the age of understanding, then he/she will have to notify them in advance, otherwise it
will not count on their behalf. Please contact your local masājid for this years rate for sadaqat-ul
-fitr.
