A POEM BY ANONYMOUS RESIDENT At first I thought ‘twas Rembrandt who spooked every House So I donned black robes and sneakers, quiet as a mouse ‘twas in the sixteenth century when five vessels sailed Admiral Magellan and his one ship prevailed His ship “Victoria”circumnavigated earth The four other craft were lost, no captains to berth Under Spanish flag they’d sailed, I do believe ‘tis those four lost captains haunting Rembrandt as they still grieve For the crew of Batavia years later ran aground On Australia’s western coast, the 68 alive were found, Three forty one did board, such a great loss Netherlands at the time Europe’s maritime boss So the captains of those four craft lost so long ago They relocated here as ghosts as you no doubt know Here they wander through the Home both day and night Tho in the day not often seen cos of all the sunlight I’m now investigating these tantilising spooks And you, I’ll seek to keep informed by guesswork and by flukes Reprinted with permission from anonymous resident
