The star of “The Graduate” spoke after co-starring with Dench in an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot made by British broadcaster BBC One.

Hoffman, 77, described Dench, 79, as “a scrumptious looking wom-an” and said he had watched some of her early performances online. “I said to Judi, “If I met you then, I

wouldn’t have let you get away,”” Hoffman said.

“There must be a way to do a love story where we meet in our twenties but yet we’re acting as we are now.”

In Esio Trot, Hoffman features as a bachelor in love with his neighbour, played by James Bond star Dench, who showers all her love on her pet

tortoise.The adaptation by “Notting Hill”

and “Four Weddings and a Funeral” screenwriter Richard Curtis is due to be screened at Christmas.

Curtis earlier this month said Hoffman and Dench’s characters in Esio Trot were the couple “most likely to stay together” out of all those who had appeared in his films.

Based on a survey at the Ba-dung Market on Monday (Nov 24), the prices of commodity were estimated to rise ahead of Galungan and Kuningan feast. So far, the price of imported fruits already rose, while no lo-cal fruits were available at the market as beyond their season. The only local fruit available was mango sold for IDR 10,000 per kilogram. Tangerine formerly sold at IDR 10,000 per kg already increased to IDR 18,000 per kg.

Imported fruits such as Fuji apple formerly sold for IDR 25,000 per kg already rose to IDR 35,000 per kg. Banana as a mandatory fruit used to fill in ritual oblation always increased where the plantain and stony

banana were sold for IDR 2,000 - IDR 2,500 each. Meanwhile, per cluster it was sold for IDR 250,000 - IDR 350,000. “It is feared the prices will rise again before holiday as the supply of goods reduces and then the price increase is irreversible,” said a trader at the Badung Market Den-pasar, Mrs. Sudarmi from Sibang Gede who had been selling there for 30 years.

Other than bananas, she added the price of young coconut leaf also continued to rise to IDR 25,000 per bundle this month. It happened because the supply of Bali could not meet the mar-ket needs, then it was brought in from outside Bali. Young coconut leaf and banana from

outside Bali had better quality than the local products so that the price was more expensive. It was getting more expensive again after influenced by the fuel price hike.

As a result, the price of canang sari oblation also showed a price hike to IDR 50,000 per fifty pieces or IDR 1,000 each. The canang sari posed a means of ritual always presented every day by the Hindus. Meanwhile, the flowers commonly used in the making of canang oblation also showed an increase in price, such as marigold was sold from IDR 28,000 to IDR 30,000 per kg, garden balsam at IDR 14,000 per kg and sliced fragrant pandanus at IDR 10,000 per kg. (dyn)

Bali PostDENPASAR - One week has gone af-

ter the announcement of President Joko Widodo increasing the price of gasoline from IDR 6,500 to IDR 8,500 per liter. Consequently the price hike resulted in various reactions in the community. Although some parties agreed, but not a few people complained because the fuel price hike also affected the price of other basic needs.

“Basic needs have no problem, ex-cept for the price of chili tending to rise. The price of chili is expensive because the supply is inadequate. Many farm-ers do not plant it any longer because a couple of years ago they suffered great losses. So, they lacked of desire to grow chili,” said Minister of Trade, Rahmat Gobel, before thousands of women entrepreneurs coalesced into the members of the Association of Indonesian Women Entrepreneurs (IWAPI), Monday (Nov 24).

Related to the increase in the price of chili and other food issues, Rachmat claimed to have been making coordina-tion with the Ministry of Agriculture. He considered the process of farming to the production of finished goods should be supported with a touch of technology. Moreover, Indonesia was going to enter the ASEAN free trade next year.

“It is a threat. But, if we consider it positive, the threat also poses a chal-lenge having a great opportunity that we need to achieve. Here, as the Ministry of Trade I always make coordination with relevant ministers including the Minister of Cooperatives, Minister of Industry

and Minister of Agriculture how to take advantage of the remaining one-year to resolve the problems encountered so that we can utilize the ASEAN market as a place for us to contribute through our products,” he explained.

Meanwhile, regarding the rise in fuel price, Rachmat said that it actually posed the transfer of subsidy from fuel to more productive sectors. Among other things, it would be used for the sectors of health, education, infrastructure and agriculture. He said that agriculture was the main sector needed to be strength-ened because the agriculture posed the foundation of the national economic growth.

“Agriculture is a labor intensive sector, and the farmers are the fighters that should be supported because they have made the basic needs available. We need to encourage them so that we do not need to import the commodities from outside. And through the farmers we build the national security and the strength of our own nation. It is the reason why the transfer of fuel subsidy must be made in the effort to build productivity and efficiency of the na-tion,” he said.

Rachmat continued that education and health sector including skill im-provement became the focus because they were important capital when com-peting against other nations. Meanwhile, the infrastructure should also get subsidy transfer from fuel so that it could build competitiveness, including diminish-ing the costs incurred due to logistical problems and so forth. uneasy on responding to the commodity prices, without exception for traders. Congestion around the Badung and Denpasar region has become daily spectacle and it slows down the distribution of goods. Traders and consumers are unable to do much to anticipate it.

“The national stock is very limited because the farmers’ interest to culti-vate chili has lately dropped after they experienced a harvest failure,” he noted on the sidelines of a national meeting of the Association of Indonesian Business-women (Iwapi).

The Iwapi meeting was attended by around a thousand participants including Minister of Women’s Role Affairs Prof. Dr Yohana Susana Yambise and Iwapi General Chairperson Nita Yudi along with several officials from the concerned ministries.

Rahmat Gobel explained that the short-age in chili supply must be overcome by expanding chili plantations and imple-menting technological innovations in land toiling, plants’ care, and fertilizing and harvest.

He stated that the new government under President Joko Widodo would continue to encourage farmers to cultivate chili and transform the commodity into industrial products to increase its added

value for farmers. He said if the commodity is trans-

formed into industrial products, it would further benefit farmers, traders, and other parties as the product can be preserved for a longer time.

The minister noted that the shortage in chili supply has led to the increase in the price of the commodity.

The taste of chili produce differs across regions such as from Sumatra, Kalimantan to Sulawesi, thereby prov-ing to be more beneficial to the farmers if they can process it into products for wider markets and exports.

With regard to that, he called on Iwapi members to play a bigger role in developing agricultural products, such as chili, which have huge potential in the country.

“We hope Iwapi that has signed a memorandum of understanding for coop-eration with the ministry of trade would follow up the deal seriously and meet the target,” he added.

The malicious software, dubbed Regin, has a rare level of sophistica-tion and has been targeting govern-ment agencies, telecoms, utilities, airlines, research facilities, private individuals and others since at least 2008, according to Symantec Corporation.

Attacks on telecom firms ap-peared aimed at getting access to

calls being routed through net-works.

“Regin is a highly complex threat which has been used in systematic data collection or intel-ligence gathering campaigns,” the Silicon Valley-based computer se-curity firm said in a paper detailing the threat.

“The development and opera-

tion of this malware would have required a significant investment of time and resources, indicating that a nation state is responsible.”

Regin was found mainly in 10 countries, but more than half of infections discovered were in Rus-sia and Saudi Arabia, according to Symantec researchers.

OTTAWA - Affordable access to the Internet should be a human right, as it represents hope for political freedom and economic prosperity to many around the world, according to a survey Monday.

Most people also do not want any one nation or organization to manage this global network of computers, in order to prevent crackdowns on free speech and political expression.

But they are split on who then should run it.

The CIGI-Ipsos survey of 23,376 people in 24 countries was unveiled at the start of a two-day meeting in Ottawa on Internet governance.

An estimated one third of the world’s population (or 2.3 billion

letting hackers snap screen-shots, steal passwords, monitor network traffic, take files or tap into mobile telephone calls, researchers said.

The “backdoor-type Trojan” takes great measures to hide its presence as well as any data it is stealing, according to Symantec.

“Regin’s developers put consid-erable effort into making it highly inconspicuous,” the report said.

“Its low key nature means it can potentially be used in espionage campaigns lasting several years.”

Regin may have taken years

to make, according to Symantec, which said the tool could be used for mass surveillance.

Nearly half the infections dis-covered targeted small businesses and private individuals.

Researchers found Regin in-fected a variety of organizations from 2008 to 2011, only to be withdrawn, though a new version of the malicious software appeared last year.

Symantec did not indicate who it thought might be behind the cyber-espionage tool.

people) is online.According to the Global Commis-

sion on Internet Governance, which is hosting the Ottawa conference, the world is at a crossroads, with compe-tition for power and influence of all aspects of the Internet heating up.

The group, chaired by former Swedish politician and diplomat Carl Bildt, is scheduled to present policy recommendations for the future of Internet governance in 2016.

More than 80 percent of survey re-spondents said Internet access is key to their economic future and livelihood, and important for free speech and political expression, and so it should be a right.

Users in Africa and the Middle East were most likely to hold this view.

“Overwhelming global public

support for the idea that access to the Internet should be a human right also shows just how important the Internet has come to freedom of expression, freedom of association, social com-munication, the generation of new knowledge, and economic opportunity and growth,” the commission’s Fen Hampson told a press conference.

Asked who they most trusted to set the rules for web access and us-age, a small majority (57 percent) of respondents chose a combination of technical experts and engineers, non-governmental groups and others.

Fifty percent felt the United Na-tions would do a good job while 36 percent supported the United States taking a lead role.

The survey also found that Inter-net users worldwide are increasingly

concerned about online privacy (64 percent), and fear hacking of their bank accounts and theft of their private data such as photos and messages.

As well, they worry about govern-ment censorship and spying.

North Americans and Europeans were least likely to fret about their per-sonal information being compromised (35-36 percent, respectively) but were

also least likely to share personal data online.

The poll was conducted October 7 to November 12 in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, France, Ger-many, Great Britain, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Poland, South Africa, South Korea, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey and the United States.

Protesters initially put up no resistance as workers in white hard hats and gloves tore down barricades, moving wooden pallets and other junk into the middle of an intersection to be taken away in a truck that had pulled up.

But as the authorities pushed down the 50-meter (164-foot) oc-cupied stretch of Argyle Street to remove tents and other debris, they faced defiance from protesters, who used delaying tactics such as asking for more time to pack up their belongings. Pro-democracy lawmaker Leung Kwok-hung was among those taken away by officers to waiting police vans.

Traffic on the previously oc-cupied section of Argyle Street — which had been blocked by the protesters for nearly two months —

was flowing in one of the four lanes by late afternoon.

Protesters have been camped out on major thoroughfares in three ar-eas of Hong Kong since Sept. 28 de-manding greater democracy in the semiautonomous city. The standoff has continued with no end in sight as neither the government nor the student-led protesters have shown any willingness to compromise.

“I’ll continue to fight for true democracy,” said housewife Candy Chan, 50, who visited Mong Kok regularly to support the protesters. “We’re fighting because we want the government to come out and respond to our demands.” A crowd of people supporting the police clearance operation applauded from the sidelines.

Businessman Andrew Tang said

he traveled across Victoria Harbor to watch the barricade removal. He said the protesters were not re-alistic in their demands to China’s communist rulers in Beijing and miscalculated by not withdrawing earlier. “The Communist Party will never surrender,” he said as he gave a thumbs-up to the police.

Authorities last week started enforcing court orders against protest sites. They removed some barricades from the edge of the main protest area, next to the city government headquarters, while protesters offered little resistance.

The barricade clearances come at a critical phase for the protest movement, with student leaders running out of options, and public support and the number of demon-strators dwindling.

UNITED NATIONS — The Islamic State group which controls a large swath of Syria and Iraq has received between $35 million and $45 million in ransom payments in the past year, a U.N. expert monitor-ing sanctions against al-Qaida said Monday. Yotsna Lalji told a meet-ing of the U.N. Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee that an estimated $120 million in ransom was paid to terrorist groups between 2004 and 2012.

Kidnapping for ransom “contin-ues to grow,” she said, as demon-strated by the money the extremist group calling itself the Islamic State has collected, between $35 million and $45 million in the past years.

She said in recent years that al-Qaida and its affiliates have made kidnapping “the core al-Qaida tactic for generating revenue.” She pointed to an October 2012 record-ing in which al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri incites militants world-wide to kidnap Westerners.

Lalji said al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, which operates from Yemen, received $20 million in ransom between 2011 and 2013, and al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, which operates in North Africa, received $75 million over the past

four years.She said the al-Qaida-linked

extremist groups Boko Haram in Nigeria and al-Shabab in Somalia also “have collected millions of dollars over the past years,” and the Abu Sayyaf militant group in the Philippines has received about $1.5 million in ransom.

According to the al-Qaida sanc-tions committee, although the media focuses on international hostages who have generated the largest ransom payments, the vast majority of victims are nationals kidnapped within their own country.

Lalji said terrorist groups either carry out kidnappings themselves or in the case of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula they work with tribesmen in Yemen who deliver hostages for a fee.

Last week, President Barack Obama ordered a review of how the United States responds when its citizens are taken hostage overseas in light of the beheadings of Ameri-cans by Islamic State militants, but it will not include changing the longstanding U.S. policy of refusing to pay ransom. Many governments do pay ransom and some family members of those killed have com-plained that the U.S. did not take enough action in an attempt to save their loved ones.

HONG KONG — Hong Kong authorities on Tuesday arrested pro-democracy demonstrators who refused to comply with a court order to clear a protest site in the city’s Mong Kok district, scene of previous violent confrontations with police and angry mobs. Police took away about a dozen protesters after warning people not to interfere with workers and bailiffs enforcing the court order to remove obstructions from the site, one of three that activists have occupied for nearly two months.

“The increase in bus ticket price has occurred since the past four days, a day after the announcement of the fuel price hike by the presi-dent. However, some companies still do not raise their ticket price,” said the management of Organda Bali, Bagus Budi, met at Ubung Terminal, Denpasar.

He said the government wanted the increase in bus ticket by 10 per-cent, but the Land Transportation Organization (Organda) wanted an increase of 30 percent. The bus transportation companies were confused to set the ticket price be-cause there had been no certainty from the government related to the official ticket price. “Actually, the price of spare parts has increased as well as the crossing at Gilimanuk increased from IDR 490,000 to IDR 540,000. Likewise, the al-lowance of driver and conductor also increased,” he told reporter of Antara in Denpasar.

Bagus Budi, the Field Coordina-tor of Restu Mulya bus company, also explained that although some bus companies had increased their ticket price, his company remained to sell ticket at the old price. “It is taken because there has been no definite decision from the govern-ment and Organda about the mag-nitude of the ticket price increase to be enforced,” he said.

According to him, Restu Mulya remained to sell ticket at the old price. However, passengers usually getting a discounted rate could no longer get it for executive class. For example, the Denpasar to Yogya-karta route still charged as much as IDR 275,000; Denpasar-Surakarta (IDR 275,000); Denpasar-Madura (IDR 190,000) and Denpasar-Surabaya (IDR 175,000). “We have not yet decided to raise the ticket price, although every bust departure we’ve spent approximately IDR 1,900,000 for East Java region

including the allowance for driver and conductor as well as the cost of diesel fuel,” said Budi.

Meanwhile, the Coordinator of Ubung Terminal, Agung Gede, explained the ticket price of Akas Bus for Denpasar-Jember route was set at IDR 95,000 from the previous price of IDR 75,000 and Midas Bus to IDR 170,000 from IDR 150,000. In the meantime, the Pahala Kencana serving the Den-pasar-Surabaya route increased the ticket price to the range of IDR 170,000 to IDR 175,000 from the previous price at IDR 160,000; for Denpasar-Surakarta route increased to IDR 300,000 from IDR 275,000. “The increase in the bus ticket price of Akas, Midas and Pahala Kencana reached IDR 20,000 to IDR 25,000 per route. With this varied price increases, the situation at Ubung Terminal is lonelier than ever before,” said Gede Bagus. (kmb)

SINGARAJA - Potential for the tangerine cultivation in Buleleng is quite promising. A number of farm-ers at Asah Panji hamlet, Wanagiri village, Sukasada subdistrict, are intensifying the production of tan-gerine. Their target market remains to be focused on local markets in Bali. Nevertheless, some farmers hope their tangerine product can increase every year, while some kinds of disease during the growth of tangerine fruits can be dimin-ished.

One of the local tangerine farm-ers, Wayan Sukarma, 43, said the tangerine production tended to increase. It was dominantly sold by residents to the markets in Buleleng and Denpasar. He explained that Asah Panji hamlet had a woman farmer group named Sari Amerta Giri. The price of tangerine at farmer level ranged from IDR 4,000 to IDR 6,000 per kilogram. Local farmers often implemented inter-cropping systems namely a com-bination of coffee and tangerine.

They took advantage of tangerine harvested once a year.

“I am still applying the inter-cropping system. So far, I have harvested tangerine for nearly five times with an estimated harvest of once a year. We plan to withdraw our tangerine plants to be replaced with coffee plants. When wishing to grow tangerine, it must be done on new land. It happens because we face obstacles related to the land and the tangerine disease after har-vesting for several years,” he said, Monday (Nov 24).

Tangerine cultivation was often attacked by some kinds of specific diseases such as the symptom of citrus vein phloem degeneration (CVPD) attack, in which the part of leaf turned yellow, thicker and hard-er, while the leaf was dominantly dark green. The other diseases included fungus known as Oidium Tingitanium, where the leaves were covered in flour-like layer and another disease was wet Diplodia. “Local people mostly cultivate tan-gerine,” said another farmer, Kadek Dharma, 35. DENPASAR - The decision of government to raise the price of fuel had an impact on land transport entrepreneurs, especially the intercity and interprovincial bus. The land transport entrepreneurs especially the intercity and interprovincial bus serving the route of Bali-Java also raised the tariff variedly. It happened because there has been no definite tariff benchmark from the government in response to the fuel price hike. The entrepreneurs coalesced into the Land Transportation Organization (Organda) is still confused to determine the amount of tariff increase.

“We will start the Trans-Su-matra toll road and railway de-velopment project next year,” he informed newsmen in Bakauheni, Lampung.

The president said he would gather inputs from the governor of Lampung regarding the province’s preparations.

Jokowi, as the president is

popularly known, hoped that the development project will help to improve connectivity and integra-tion between the regions in the future.

“We wish to see its develop-ment in the next 50 to 100 years,” he affirmed.

State Enterprises Minister Rini M. Soemarno has urged all state-

owned construction companies involved in the Trans-Sumatra toll road development project to strengthen coordination, so that it can be implemented in line with the acceleration program for infrastructure development that has been proposed by the govern-ment.

In February 2012, the govern-

ment, through the state enterprises ministry, planned to develop a 2.7 thousand-kilometer-long Trans-Sumatra toll road connecting the provinces of Aceh and Lampung, with an investment of almost Rp300 trillion.

In economic terms, the project cannot be single-handedly handled by the central government, and so, an agreement has been reached that the project would be carried out by a joint company to be set up by the state-owned road construction company Jasa Marga in collabora-tion with the regional governments

in Sumatra. The project will be divided

into four main corridors and three priority corridors.

The four main corridors are Lampung-Palembang stretching 358 kilometers long, Palembang-Pekanbaru (610 kilometers), Pe-kanbaru-Medan (548 kilometers), and Medan-Banda Aceh (460 kilometers).

The three priority corridors are between Palembang and Bengkulu (303 kilometers), Pekanbaru-Pa-dang (242 kilometers), and Medan-Sibolga (175 kilometers).

SINGAPORE - Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC and Rajawali Group will jointly invest $500 million in Indonesian real estate with a focus on projects in fast-growing Jakarta, both firms said Tuesday. The joint venture would involve the de-velopment of office, retail, residential as well as mixed-used projects in Indonesia, the Singapore firm said in a statement on its website.

“GIC is confident in Indonesia’s long-term growth potential and believe we can create value through the acquisition of assets in prime locations and active asset management,” said Loh Wai Keong, co-head of GIC Real Estate in Asia.

Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s biggest economy, has transformed itself into a major investment destination in the past decade, enjoying more than a decade of relative stability since the fall of former dictator Suharto in 1998.

The country’s new president Joko Widodo has pledged to cut red tape to at-tract more foreign investors and strengthen the economy. GIC, one of Singapore’s two state-linked investment funds, manages the affluent city-state’s foreign exchange reserves of well above $100 billion.

Privately-owned Rajawali, a conglom-erate with holdings in the transportation, plantations and real estate sector, is con-trolled by Peter Sondakh, one of Indone-sia’s richest men.

JAKARTA - A 73-year-old Japanese man has been ar-rested in western Indonesia for allegedly attempting to smuggle crystal methamphet-amine into the country, an offence punishable by death, police said Monday.

He was detained Saturday when his flight from Malaysia landed in the city of Padang, on Sumatra island, and customs officials found 2.5 kilograms (5.5 pounds) of the drug hidden in his bag, they said.

“He claimed that he was not aware that (the bag) contained

illegal drugs,” said Padang po-lice official Untung Suropati.

The man, whom police did not identify, had travelled to China, Macau and Malaysia before arriving in Indonesia, Suropati said.

“He could face the death penalty if a court finds him guilty of smuggling illegal drugs,” he added.

Yushi Suzuki , Japanese vice-consul in the city of Me-dan on Sumatra, confirmed that the detained man was a Japanese passport holder.

Indonesia enforces st iff penalties for drug trafficking, including life imprisonment

and death.Foreigners are frequently

arrested for at tempting to smuggle drugs into the coun-try, although most are caught on the popular holiday island of Bali.

A Frenchman was jailed for 15 years in July for attempt-ing to smuggle a huge stash of crystal methamphetamine into Bali at the beginning of the year.

While the markets have shown themselves to be resilient, the Manila-based lender said in its quarterly Asia Bond Monitor that their composition left them vulnerable to external influ-ences.

“Higher US rates and a stronger dollar could prove a challenge given increased foreign holdings of Asia’s bonds, which could easily reverse, and record US dollar bond issuance by the region’s companies,” said Iwan Azis, the head of ADB’s Office of Regional Economic Integration.

US dollar debt becomes more expen-sive to service in local currency terms when the dollar appreciates.

Markets currently anticipate no US interest rate rise before the middle of next year, but the ADB said a swifter-than-expected improvement in the US economy could bring that forward.

The quarterly report also noted that companies in East Asia may have trouble raising local-currency capital because of stricter rules requiring banks to reduce holdings of riskier bonds.

“There are concerns that liquidity conditions are tightening because the higher capital requirements under Basel III regulations have pushed banks to reduce their holdings of bonds,” the ADB said.

AMSTERDAM — ING Group NV, the Dutch bank, says it will cut 1,700 jobs, or 2.7 percent of its workforce, to cut costs.

An additional thousand jobs will be lost at external suppliers, the bank said in a statement Tuesday.

ING said the cuts are part of a move to expand its digital banking operations and jobs will be lost

“at the headquarters of ING Retail Banking and in the back offices, call centers and IT departments.”

The company will book a 320 million euro ($400 million) charge to cover costs, and expects to save 270 million euros annually from 2017.

Earlier this month, ING paid back the last of a 10 billion euro bailout it received from the Dutch state during the financial crisis of 2008.

TOKYO - Policymakers were sharply divided over expanding the Bank of Japan’s huge mon-etary easing plan last month, with opponents warning that the risks far outweighed any ben-efits, minutes from the meeting showed Tuesday.

The BoJ surprised markets on October 31 by announcing it would inflate its asset-buying plan by up to 80 trillion yen ($676 billion) annually. The move was narrowly passed in a 5-4 vote among board members.

The decision, which came days after the US Federal Re-serve wound down its own stimu-lus, has sent the yen plunging to multi-year lows against the dollar and euro while pushing equities to highs not seen since before the global financial crisis.

However, critics on the policy board questioned “the sustain-ability of its effects” and said the impact of fresh measures on the world’s number three economy -- and the BoJ’s drive to hit a 2.0 percent inflation target -- “would

not be large”. They also said it could “considerably” squeeze liquidity in Japanese government bond markets.

One member warned that the yen’s weakness would batter small domestic firms, which are facing soaring import costs.

The four opposing members were Koji Ishida and Yoshihisa Morimoto, both former busi-ness executives seen as loyal to BoJ chief Haruhiko Kuroda, along with former private sector economists Takehiro Sato and Takahide Kiuchi.

The close call suggested that Kuroda -- who was hand-picked by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as part of a wider plan to kick-start the economy -- almost became the first BoJ chief to lose a vote on a policy that he backed, according to Dow Jones Newswires.

However, one member who supported the move said: “These measures were expected to pro-duce stronger effects on corpo-rate profits, employment, and wages than in the past”, while another warned that failing to

act could hurt the bank’s cred-ibility in helping kickstart the economy.

Following last month’s policy meeting, Kuroda said Japan’s economy was at a “critical mo-ment” in emerging from years of deflation, and the BoJ would “not hesitate” to initiate more easing if necessary.

In a speech Tuesday morning, Kuroda again defended the deci-sion, saying it was “necessary to pursue monetary easing more powerfully... and to reiterate (the BoJ’s) unwavering resolution to achieving the price stability target of two percent”.

Separately, the government on Tuesday maintained its outlook on the economy in November, after cutting its view in the previ-ous two months.

The monthly economic report said the economy was moderately recovering but “weakness can be seen in private consumption”.

Japan’s economy plunged into recession during the third quarter, prompting Abe to delay a planned sales tax rise next year and call snap elections.

After a car bomb ripped through its main commercial street earlier this month, killing 15 people and wounding 42, security forces responded as they have after every previous attack. Sol-diers and police swarmed in to secure Gorayaat’s streets. At checkpoints, they checked people’s IDs, and anyone who was not a resident had to account for his presence. “That goes on for one or two days, then it’s back to normal and we wait for the next bombing,” said Idris Jawad, a resident.

For months, Islamic State group militants have hammered Baghdad with bombings and suicide attacks, the work of dozens of cells operating in the Iraqi capital, officials say. Secu-rity agencies have floundered trying to stop them, relying on techniques that haven’t changed — or succeeded — in a decade.

The government is now trying to re-vamp security measures, moving away from reliance on concrete blast walls and police checkpoints. Instead, the plan is to beef up police intelligence units that have gone understaffed and underfunded since the 2003 fall of Saddam Hussein, according to intelli-gence and Interior Ministry officials.

Among the ideas being considered is to significantly increase the recruit-ment of informers among the public to report on suspicious behavior, the ministry official told The Associated Press.

That would mean recruiting Sun-nis, something that has been difficult in the past. Sunnis deeply distrust the Shiite-dominated security forces, which they often accuse of discrimi-nating against their co-religionists. Moreover, the security forces are known to be inf i l t ra ted by both Sunni and Shiite militants, meaning that anyone who cooperates with au-thorities against militants risks being exposed.

The Interior Ministry official and two intelligence officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the steps under discussion.

Interior Ministry spokesman Maan Saad said a large shipment of new, U.S.-made bomb-detection equipment is arriving soon in Iraq. “It will be very useful and effective in minimizing the terrorist threats against Iraqis,” he said, refusing to give details of the technology or the cost.

Thousands of people rallied late Monday in U.S. cities including Los Angeles and New York to passionately but peacefully protest a grand jury’s decision not to indict a white police of-ficer who killed a black 18-year-old in Ferguson, Missouri. They led marches, waved signs and shouted chants of “hands up, don’t shoot,” the refrain that has become a rallying cry in protests over police killings across the U.S.

The most disruptive demonstrations were in the St. Louis area and Oakland, California, where protesters flooded the lanes of freeways, milling about stopped cars with their hands raised in the air.

Activists had been planning to protest even before the nighttime an-nouncement that Officer Darren Wilson

will not be charged in the shooting death of Michael Brown.

The racially charged case in Fergu-son has inflamed tensions and reignited debates over police-community rela-tions even in cities far from the pre-dominantly black St. Louis suburb.

Police departments in several major cities braced for large demonstra-tions with the potential for the kind of violence that marred nightly protests in Ferguson after Brown’s killing. Demonstrators there vandalized police cars and buildings, hugged barricades and taunted officers with expletives Monday night while police fired smoke canisters and tear gas. Gunshots were heard on the streets and fires raged. But police elsewhere reported that gather-ings were mostly peaceful following Monday’s announcement.

As the night wore on, dozens of

protesters in Oakland got around police and blocked traffic on an interstate highway. Police were able to corral the protesters and cleared the highway in one area, but another group soon entered the traffic lanes a short distance away. Police didn’t immediately report any arrests.

A diverse crowd of several hundred protesters marched and chanted in St. Louis not far from the site of another police shooting, shutting down an in-terstate highway for a time. A few cars got stuck in the midst of the protesters, who appeared to be leaving the vehicles alone. They chanted “hands up, don’t shoot” and “black lives matter.”

In Seattle, marching demonstrators stopped periodically to sit or lie down in city intersections, blocking traffic before moving on, as dozens of police officers watched.

STRASBOURG, France — Pope Francis has de-manded that Europe craft a unified and fair immigration policy, saying that thousands of refugees coming ashore need acceptance and assistance, not self-interested poli-cies that risk lives and fuel social conflict.

Francis made the comments Tuesday to the European Parliament during a brief visit meant to highlight his vision for Europe a quarter-century after St. John Paul II travelled to Strasbourg to address a continent still divided by the Iron Curtain.

Francis said he wanted to bring a message of hope to Europeans distrustful of their institutions, burdened by economic crisis and spiritually adrift in a culture that no longer values human dignity.

He called for legislators to promote policies that create jobs and accept immigrants, saying “We cannot allow the Mediterranean to become a vast cemetery!”

BAGHDAD — Baghdad’s neighborhood of Gorayaat, a small Shiite enclave on a bend in the Tigris River, exemplifies the failures of Iraq’s security agencies trying to protect the capital from attacks by the Islamic State. The district has been a target for years, hit by so many bombings, suicide attacks, rockets and mortars that residents have lost count.

GIANYAR - Tirta Empul Temple and sacred bathing place is located at rural Manukaya areas, Tampak siring sub district, Gianyar Re-gency. The sub district with the area 0f42.63 square km has 8 villages. And, the name Tampaksiring has been famous because of the presi-dential palace located there.

As a matter of fact, the district has many tourist objects being well known throughout the

World like Gunung Kawi, Tirta Empul Temple and historical sites up to the south region. It is esti-mated the name of Tampaksiring is originated in Balinese words tampak (sole) and siring means “tilting.” Allegedly, the meaning of both words is associated with a piece of the legend of explicit and implicit in a palm leaf manuscript stating the name derived from the former traces the feet belonged to a king named Mayadenawa.

According to “Mayadanawan-taka” palm-leaf manuscript, this king was the son of Bhagavan Kasyapa with Goddess Danu. But alas, this clever king and had a nature of evil

magic, was eager to conquer the world and got drunk for power, Moreover, he claimed himself as a god requiring the people to wor-ship him.

His bad character caused the Lord Indra angry. Then, the Lord invaded and attacked him by send-ing a number of troops. As May-adenawa ran into the forest, he was

trying to outwit his pursuers by tilting his soles when he stepped a swindle so that the pursuers could not recognize his footsteps.

It is said, by his supernatural powers he could assume him-self into any forms and even he could create a toxic spring, which caused many troops die after a shower and drink the water. On the contrary, Lord Indra created detoxifying springs. Later on, the water bidder

came to be called with Tirta Empul (holy water). Meanwhile, the forest area passed through by Mayadenawa running by tilt-ing his soles was then known as Tampaksiring. In the book Sejarah Pembangunan Pura-Pura di Bali (History of Temples Development in Bali) written by Ktut Soebandi is mentioned the Tirta Empul bathing place was built during the reign of King Sri Candrabhaya Singha Warmadewa.

It can be known from the exis-tence of a stone plaque at Manukaya Village containing text

and figures saying that Tirta Empul was established in the fourth month of Caka Year 884 or around October 962 AD, while Pura Tirta Empul was built during the reign of King Masula Masuli ruling in Bali starting from 1100 Caka Year or 1178 AD, for 77 years.

In other words, there were ap-proximately 216 years of time difference between the develop-ment of Tirta Empul bathing place and its temple. Architecturally, the bathing

place and Tirta Empul temple have historical value, spiritual vibration, distinctive character, as well as becomes familiar and friendly to the environments lts architectural style rellects the ele-ments of local tradition and looked

harmony with the natural conditions in the vicinity.

Similarly, its spaces imply reli-gious significance If studied further in terms of its architectural function, the object as springs gets in touch with the space, namely the space

for bathing, spatial image as a religious space to wash up physi-cally and spiritually. Aside from re-lationship built by the shape and the space will determine the rhythm, aesthetic value and religious value of the building.

LILLE, France - Having stolen the limelight from Davis Cup stal-wart Stan Wawrinka, Roger Federer quickly turned attention towards his Switzerland team mates after securing the winning point in the final against France on Sunday. Federer crushed Richard Gasquet 6-4 6-2 6-2 to give the Swiss a 3-1 win over the hosts, but the 17-times grand slam champion refused to be the hero.

“I’m really happy for all the guys in the team,” he said. “Stan put so much effort over the years and he played an unbelievable weekend, that’s what gave me the opportunity today. “I’m very much aware of that, this one is for the boys.

“I Can’t thank Stan enough for the effort he’s put in this weekend to build me back up. Same for (cap-tain) Severin (Luthi). Just keeping me alive really.” Wawrinka played more Davis Cup ties than Federer recently, notably last year’s World Group playoff against Ecuador that helped Switzerland stay in the elite and have a shot at this year’s title.

Federer skipped that tie, which the Swiss won 4-1. “We are happy. We made many sacrifices during the years to be able to win it. We did it now,” said Wawrinka. Asked what the Davis Cup title meant for him as it added to his record grand

slam titles and Olympic doubles gold medal, Federer said: “This is not for me, it’s one for them.

“I’ve won enough in my career that I don’t need this to complete my... everything... ticking off the boxes... so I’m just happy for ev-erybody else.” Federer let captain Severin Luthi and Wawrinka carry the trophy during a lap of honour on the clay of the Pierre Mauroy stadium.

Marco Chiudinelli and Michael Lammer did not play at the week-end but they have done their share of work over the years to keep Switzerland afloat. Wawrinka put the visitors on track by winning the first point with a 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-2 defeat of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga before Federer was upset 6-1 6-4 6-3 by Gael Monfils.

Wawrinka was the main man at the beginning of the doubles, too as he and Federer beat Gasquet and Julien Benneteau 6-3 7-5 6-4 to take a 2-1 lead. Wawrinka did not have to play on Sunday as his match against Monfils was cancelled after Federer did the job against Gasquet.

“I’m very happy the way I played,” he said. “Clearly I ex-pected (French number one) Jo(-Wilfried Tsonga) to be on the other side of the net but I had an hour to get ready. “Things were not easy but I was able to play aggressive and I’m happy it paid off.”

After averaging 18.5 points and shooting 41 percent from the field in the losing streak, James was 9 for 17 from the field Monday and tied a season-high with 11 assists while not playing the fourth quar-ter. James hit four shots from the field, including a 3-pointer, made all seven of his free throws and had four assists in the opening pe-riod. He finished the first half with 22 points, including a fadeaway jumper from the top of the key to end the second quarter.

Anderson Varejao scored 14 points while Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving each added 12. Blake Griffin had 22 points and a season-high 16 rebounds for Los Angeles, and Chris Paul had 22 points and a season-high 15 assists as the Clip-pers downed Charlotte 113-92 for the Hornets’ sixth straight loss.

field and finished one assist shy of a triple-double. The Clippers were 15 of 32 from 3-point range, while the Hornets were just 2 of 20. Jamal Crawford had 21 points and J.J. Redick added 17 and the sharp-shooting duo combined to go 9 of 17 from beyond the arc.

Paul came in averaging had 9.5 assists for the Clippers (8-5). Port-land’s LaMarcus Aldridge had 15 of his 33 points during a pivotal third quarter to help the Trail Blazers defeat Philadelphia 114-104, send-ing the 76ers to their 14th straight loss to open the season.

Wesley Matthews added 17 points, Damian Lillard had 16 and Robin Lopez chipped in 12 for Portland (11-3), which won its eighth in a row. Michael Carter-Williams led Philadelphia (0-14) with 24 points.

The 76ers moved within one

loss of matching the club record for consecutive losses to begin a sea-son and will look to avoid an 0-15 opening when they host Brooklyn on Wednesday.

The Toronto Raptors beat the Phoenix Suns 104-100 for their fifth straight win after Jonas Valanciunas had a career-high 27 points and 11 rebounds, and DeMar DeRozan scored 23

Houston’s James Harden scored 36 points to lead the depleted Rockets to a 91-86 victory over slumping New York Knicks, while Donald Sloan scored 29 points and seven Indiana players scored in double figures in the Pacers’ 111-100 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. Jimmy Butler scored 25 points and Pau Gasol added 23 points and nine rebounds to lead the Chicago Bulls to a 97-95 win over the Utah Jazz.

The club nicknamed ‘Neverkusen’, for repeatedly going close and missing out on silverware, have been particularly effective in Europe this season.

After an opening defeat by Monaco despite domi-nating and missing a bagful of chances, the Germans have reeled off three straight victories to top the group on nine points, leaving their French rivals in second place on five. With the addition of Karim Bellarabi and playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu this season, Leverkusen have added considerable punch to their attack and the striker has been rewarded by a Germany call-up.

Leverkusen’s 3-1 victory on Saturday over Hanover 96 was their first in three Bundesliga games and there was more good news with Stefan Kiessling on target for the first time since August. “To win 3-1 going into this week is a boost, no doubt,” said scorer Gonzalo Castro. “Now we have big games ahead of us.”

With Castro and captain Simon Rolfes coming back last week from long injury breaks, coach Roger Schmidt will have more options to play in his trade-mark attacking style.

“That can only work if everyone works together,” Schmidt said. “It is a challenge to do it every four games but against Ha-nover we stayed focused and disciplined and we did it well.” Monaco, on the other hand, have struggled in Ligue 1 and are looking over their shoulders in Europe.

A 2-2 draw against lowly Caen on Saturday left them eighth in the league, 11 points adrift of leaders Olympique Marseille. “The team has two big problems,” frustrated coach Leonardo Jardim said. “A lack of ef-ficiency because we create chances but score too few goals, and an average mentality.”

Monaco, who have failed to score in five of their last six Champions League away games, know a lack of goals will prove costly on Wednesday.

Reuters BERLIN - Chelsea are well-

placed to secure a Champions League knockout stage when they face Schalke 04 in their penulti-mate Group G game on Tuesday but coach Jose Mourinho warned that any slip up could still prove costly. Chelsea, top on eight points, will advance with a win or even a draw in which they score two goals or more.

“It makes no sense to speak about the last 16,” Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho told reporters af-ter his team arrived in Germany.

“We need points to carry on play-ing in the Champions League and that’s why we are here -- to get the points. If we lose two matches we go to the Europa League,” he said.

The Germans, in second place on five points, have Sporting Lis-bon breathing down their necks on four and Slovenia’s Maribor on three, still within striking distance.

Mourinho said securing quali-fication on Tuesday would spare the 2012 Champions League win-ners a lot of unnecessary pressure with a crowded calendar in the

coming weeks.Chelsea cruised to a 2-0 win

over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday to remain clear at the top of the Premier League.

“We have two matches to do it (qualify) but obviously it would be better for us to qualify tomor-row,” said Mourinho, whose team have not lost a competitive game this season.

“We have so many matches in December if we can avoid a cru-cial match to decide the qualifica-tion for the Champions League, if we can avoid that pressure, it would be very good for us.”

VINA DEL MAR, Chile — Brazil will face Colombia and Argentina will play defending champion Uruguay after the group-stage matchups were drawn for the 2015 Copa America on Monday. Brazil was drawn against Colombia, Peru and Venezuela in Group C of the South American competition, while Argentina was placed with Uruguay, Paraguay and Jamaica in Group B.

Host Chile is in Group A with Mexico, Ecuador and Bolivia. Chile, Brazil and Argentina are the seeded teams for the June 11-July 4 tournament.

The Chileans will be trying to win the Copa America for the first time. “Hope-fully this time we will be able to play up to the expectations,” Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli said. The top two teams in each of the three groups will advance to the competition’s quarterfinals, along with the best-two third-place finishers.

Brazil and Colombia will play in a rematch of the World Cup quarterfinals, when the hosts won 2-1 in a match marked by Neymar’s back injury that ruled

him out of the competition. While Brazil is trying to rebuild under new coach Dunga, Co-

lombia has been thriving under Jose Pekerman and Real Madrid star James Rodriguez. “We are getting

used to playing against Brazil,” Pekerman said. “Hopefully we will be able to win

this time.” Lionel Messi’s Argentina will have to face Uruguay, the same team it lost to in the quarterfinals of the home tournament in 2011.

Uruguay is the competition’s most successful nation with 15

titles, but it won’t be able to count on Barcelona star striker Luis Su-

arez, who will still be serving FIFA’s suspension for biting an opponent during

the World Cup.The 12-nation tournament will be played in eight

host cities — Antofagasta, Concepcion, La Serena, Rancagua, Santiago, Temuco, Valparaiso and Vina del Mar. Mexico and Jamaica

received invitations to play in the competition.

BIRMINGHAM, England — Nathaniel Clyne scored a late equalizer to rescue a point for Southampton as the second-place club was held to a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa in the Premier League.

The England defender smashed

in a late leveler just as Villa looked set to clinch its first win in eight games.

Gabby Agbonlahor had opened the scoring after rounding the out-rushing Fraser Forster in the 29th as Southampton looked far from its best. The visitors dominated pos-session but failed to regularly test

goalkeeper Brad Guzan, while Villa was left to rue Andi Weimann’s glaring miss on a counterattack in the 78th.

The point did at least lift Villa up to 16th while Southampton slipped six points behind leader Chelsea, but still two points ahead of Man-chester City.

Pele was taken to hospital on Monday with an urinary infection, local media have reported, the second time this month he has been ad-mitted for medical treatment.

The 74-year old former Brazil player was admitted to the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo but officials there released only a brief statement with no details about his condition. Widely regarded as the finest player to play the game, he had an operation to remove kidney stones earlier this month.

He won three World Cups as a player and was named “Football Player of the Century” by world soccer body FIFA, “Athlete of the Century” by the International Olympic Committee, and a “national treasure” by Brazil’s government.

Griffin was 10 of 23 from the

field and finished one assist shy of a triple-double.

DENPASAR - Bali province earned a total profit of US$62.94 million from the export of wooden statues and handicrafts during January-October 2014, the prov-ince’s Chief of Statistics Bureau (BPS) Panasunan Siregar stated on Tuesday.

“The number is decreasing by 21.66 percent as compared to US$89.35 million recorded during the same period last year,” Siregar

pointed out.He noted that during the period

between January and October 2013, Bali had exported 65.13 million units of wooden products abroad, while during the same period this year, the number of exported products decreased to 63.48 mil-lion units.

Among the countries that im-ported Bali’s wooden products dur-ing the past years were the United States, Australia, Japan, China, Thailand, England, and Germany.

NEW YORK - Britain led at the International Emmy Awards Monday, with three trophies going to British tele-vision series at the ceremony honoring the best TV programming outside the United States.

“Utopia,” the conspiracy series cre-ated by Britain’s Dennis Kelly and di-rected by Marc Munden took home the best drama Emmy, while the best actor trophy went to Stephen Dillane for his role as Karl Roebuck in “Tunnel,” the Canal+ series that was also nominated for best drama.

“Educating Yorkshire,” a documentary program directed by David Brindley and narrated by David Clews about life in a school in northern Britain, took home the award for non-scripted entertainment.

British programs were nominated in six categories in total.

The best actress award went to the Netherland’s Bianca Krijgsman, who plays Mirte in “De Nieuwe Wereld,” (The New World) about an airport cleaner’s relationship with a West Af-rican refugee.

Belgium took home the best comedy prize for sketch comedy series from Tim Van Aelst and Sofie Peeters, “Wat Als? 2” (What If? 2).

Germany’s “Unsere Mutter, Unsere Vater” (Generation War), a World War Two miniseries by Heike Hempel and Benjamin Benedict, won the top prize in its category.

Canada, nominated in three catego-ries, walked away with the statue for best arts programming for “The Exhibi-tion,” directed by Damon Vignale and produced by Miho Yamamoto.

It follows the public’s negative recep-tion of an artist’s show of artwork based on a police poster of missing women. The best documentary prize went to Sweden’s “Frihet bakom galler” (No Burqas Be-hind Bars), Maryam Ebrahimi’s look at an Afghan women’s prison.

Brazil, which earned five nomina-tions, won the Emmy for best telenove-la for “Precious Pearl,” Thelma Guedes and Amora Mautner’s show about the son of a millionaire factory owner.

LOS ANGELES - A teaser trailer for the new “Star Wars” movie will be released Friday, accord-ing to the director of the upcoming seventh film in the iconic franchise.

“A tiny peek at what we’re working on -- this Friday, in select theaters,” tweeted filmmaker J.J. Abrams, adding that the trailer will be 88 seconds long.

“Hope you enjoy, and have a most ex-cellent Thanksgiv-ing,” he said, refer-ring to the US na-tional holiday this Thursday.

Earlier this month studio giant Disney revealed the name of the new film, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” saying filming had been completed on the

movie, due for released on December 18, 2015.“Star Wars” has attracted generations of loyal

fans ever since the first film arrived in 1977 re-counting the adventures of Skywalker, Han Solo and Darth Vader.

Filming began in Britain in May on Episode VII. Origi-nal cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker will star in the new film, along with several newcomers includ-ing Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o.

Other cast mem-bers include vet-eran actor Max von Sydow, “Gi r l s” star Adam Driver, motion-capture ex-pert Andy Serkis and “Harry Potter” veteran Domhnall Gleeson.

Bali itself has four lakes namely Lake Batur, Lake Tamblingan, Lake Buyan and Lake Beratan. Among the four lakes, only one lake is free from water hyacinth, namely the Lake Tamblingan. “Water hyacinth is a weed where if it continues to

grow it will become a threat to the lake,” said the environmentalist Dr. Ni Luh Kartini.

According to Kartini, water hyacinth could evaporate water quickly so that the water would reduce. As a result, the lake was

going to undergo silting. However, the water hyacinth also had benefits as fertilizer when it was processed. “However, the threat kindled is far greater than the benefits, so that it needs to be eradicated or processed when wishing to get the benefits of

these weeds,” she explained. She said that water hyacinth

could proliferate quickly where a water hyacinth developed into one square meter in three months so that it would quickly cover the lake. Dif-ficulty in cleaning up the lake from water hyacinth was a problem faced today. “It is not easy to clean up water hyacinth as it must be cleaned up to the roots. It needs a suctioning to clear this water weed. So far, the water hyacinth problem cannot be

resolved,” he said. The presence of a large num-

ber of buildings generating waste dumped into the lake, she added, caused the water hyacinth to be more fertile because it absorbed the waste. By all means, it would be beneficial for the environment because it could clean up the water on the one hand. But on the other hand, the water of the lake would reduce due to evaporation carried out by the water hyacinth. (may)
