“Our priority is to realize the toll road construction plan that connects Kuta (Badung) to Soka (Tabanan). This plans has been included in the assessment phase,” said Deputy Minister of Public Works, Achmad Hermanto Dardak, amidst the meeting of the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC) in Nusa Dua.

He said that Ministry of Public Works was currently awaiting the results of the study to be followed up in the next process. If the review had been completed, then his party would plan the next development, including land acquisition that would be used by the toll road.

“It must be first made from Kuta-Soka, while road section from Soka to Gilimanuk will be repaired geometrically such as reducing climbs, sharp turns and widening road in order to facilitate vehicles to overtake,” he explained.

He said the toll road construction should have synergy with central and local government and other agencies. To build highway was required a considerable cost. However, the government continued to make improvement to transna-tional traffic flows such as from Gilimanuk (Jembrana) to Padangbai (Karangasem).

The companies said Wednesday the comedy will be written by Jenny Bicks (“What a Girl Wants”) and produced by husband and wife team Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (“Men in Black 3”).

Execut ive producers wi l l be Parkes+MacDonald president Marc Resteghini and Julia Pistor for Mattel’s Playground Productions.

Sony sees the film as a global fran-chise and plans to go into production by the end of the year.

It’s the second collaboration for Sony and Mattel. The companies are currently developing the film adaptation of “Mas-ters of the Universe,” based on Mattel action figures.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

targeting young people in Tabanan region had been going on since last year. As revealed by Customer Relations Manager of the Ta-banan Municipal Waterworks, IB Marjaya Wirata, the lack of clean water discharge often oc-currs at peak hours namely in the morning and evening. As a result, the simultaneous use sometimes results in complaint about the decreasing volume of water. Though he acknowledged that the need for clean water keeps increasing, his party guaranteed that the Municipality Waterworks would never intentionally shut off the water. In other words, if there was a complaint at that water that did not flow, probably it happened due to repair works or leaking pipes.

“We constantly advise cus-tomers to set up a water reser-voir, so that at peak hours or if out of service, customers do not lack clean water,” he advised.

Meanwhile, until March 2014, the Tabanan Municipal-ity Waterworks had a total of 49,853 house connections. “On average, our new connection each month reaches 100 house connections,” he explained.

Admittedly, the future chal-lenge faced by the Tabanan Municipality Waterworks to meet the water needs would be very difficult. It happened due to the proliferation of housing complexes that were definitely in need of clean water connec-tion. “To meet the needs for water, we rely on 31 springs including the surface water,” he explained.

Gembrong springs at Soka hamlet in Penebel subdistrict was the largest water source having considerable capacity with a production of 88.929 liters per second.

Furthermore, he said the Mu-nicipality Waterworks constant-ly increased the networks ability to increase the piping system. Additions to the piping network was intended to improve servic-es for customers. “Improvement of the network system covers the repair and installation of pipe of 216 mm along 3 km was planned to be undertaken in the area of Kukuh, Marga, whose source comes from the Dedari River,” he said.

“Actually, the planning has been made by our team to improve and refine along seven kilometers (Mertasari Beach—Ed) namely in terms pathway considered less com-fortable because it is too narrow,” said Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Mari Elka Pangestu, recently.

According to her, the pathway or the road in the coastal area would be widened, so it would be more convenient for pedestrians and bicycle users. Not only that, the minister would also make arrangement against the stalls and public spaces such as toilets and other public facilities.

“The arrangement will be done this year. I am happy with Sanur, so it will be more convenient if the infrastruc-ture is repaired. Currently, it is uncomfortable because some areas are very crowded. It will be better if the ar-rangement is without relocating traders, but it can still be comfortable,” she said.

She hoped that local government and Ministry of Public Works worked on along the coast that had not been worked on by Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy. “We have allocated a budget worth IDR 5 billion to arrange the area along the Sanur Beach,” she said.

She added the project would work on a number of new facilities. Among them, there would be jogging track, rest area, souvenirs shops as well as waste management. “The concept is to improve the existing infrastructure such as by providing rest area and information center,” she explained.

In addition to arranging the Sanur Beach area, her party also targeted some deserted beach areas to enhance tour-ist visit. Meanwhile, Kuta, Nusa Dua and Kintamani area were considered other strategic areas in Bali.

Mertasari Beach is a part of Sanur Beach that will be arranged. This Mertasari Beach is facing north, while Sanur Beach facing west. So to see the sunrise, position of the sun is unlike in the middle of the beach, but is seen emerging from the adjoining coast. He mentioned that based on Price Monitoring Survey (SPH) until the third week of April 2014 it was indicated that some commodities monitored such as vegetables and spices decreased in price. It was also in accordance with the pattern of inflation in April for the past 6 years.

“Our records indicate that most of the commodities contrib-uting to the inflation experienced a decline in price such as red chili and cayenne, and even showed a decline more than 30 percent,” he affirmed. (kmb27)

Seven designers, including Starck, Sebastian Bergne, Sam Hecht and Kim Colin, have designed “naked” furnishings — chairs, tables, sofas — for an inaugural collection of a new brand concept dubbed Tog, short for together. Consumers can choose from colors and combina-tions offered by the designers. But Tog coordinator and designer Ni-cola Rapetti said the concept also establishes a network of so-called customizers who offer additions of their own. For example, one Dutch “customizer” offers knit covers for chairs, and the possibilities for collaborations within the Tog com-munity, as it grows, is endless.

Eventually, Starck envisions that 3-D printing will expand the concept even further. Starck called Tog “a philosophy, a political idea” because it brings mass production to design, which will bring down prices.

“It’s a high-tech miracle,” Starck said. “You have a guy somewhere who will make a beautiful object, just for you.”

A temporary store was opened in Milan this week and the first permanent store will open in Sao Paolo, with more to follow. There is also a website, www.togallcreators-together.com .

The Pucci fashion house has teamed up with the Bisazza glass-mosaic makers to create splashy wall mosaics featuring archival Pucci patterns. The collaboration was born

out of friendship between Laudomia Pucci and Rossella Bisazza, women who have taken over the historic Ital-ian brands founded by their fathers.

While Bisazza has collaborated with designers before, this is its first with a fashion house. “The idea is to transfer the print from garments to interiors,” Bisazza said in the brand’s Milan store. “It is a way to decorate the house.”

Three of the creations are envi-sioned as wall hangings, pieces of art in limited editions of 99. Each

bold, geometric mosaic is made from hand-cut stones and takes six mosaic makers 200 hours to assemble. The collection also includes three more-industrialized products that can be installed directly on interior walls. “It has been a great collaboration, also very easy, very quick,” Bisazza said. “It is not always that way.”

Fashion designers are increasingly expanding into home and furniture lines to complete their brands. Prada presented its CloverLeaf Sofa, a sectional that in its full, circular

configuration creates intimate space for conversation with front-and-back seating. In its entirety, the sofa, which comes in velvety red, gold and green, commands a large space but can be broken down into elegant S-shaped seating, as Prada did in its via Mon-tenapoleane womenswear store.

“There are some things the United States can do alone but ultimately it’s going to have to be a joint effort, a collective effort,” Obama said dur-ing a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Obama’s comments underscored the difficulties he faces in devising a response to Russia’s aggressive moves on Ukraine’s eastern border and the growing unrest in the coun-try driven by pro-Russian insurgents. He did not put a timeline on when sanctions could be applied, saying only it was a matter of days, not weeks.

Obama complained that militias and armed men continue to take over government buildings in Ukraine in defiance of Ukrainian authorities. Pro-Russian insurgents have been especially active in eastern Ukraine in the aftermath of Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula. Under an agree-ment struck last week in Geneva, Russia had agreed to take steps to defuse the tensions.

“So far we have seen them not abide by the spirit or the letter of the

agreement in Geneva,” Obama said. If that continues, he said, “there will be further consequences and we will ramp up further sanctions.”

Obama’s caution came in the wake of a warning by the Russian foreign minister that attacks on Rus-sian citizens or interests in Ukraine would bring a firm response. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov compared the circumstances to those that triggered the war with Georgia in 2008.

By acknowledging that he still needed cooperation from allies to impose new sanctions, Obama laid bare one of the key obstacles to presenting a united front against Russia. Many European countries rely on Russian energy and fear that increased pressure on Moscow could hurt their own economies.

“It’s important to emphasize that throughout this process our goal has been to change Mr. Putin’s calculus, that our preference is to resolve this diplomatically, that sanctions hurt Russia more than anybody else but they are disruptive to the global economy,” Obama said.

“The main objective of this trip is to attempt to avert the shutdown of the mountaineering season and convince the Sherpas not to cancel their climb,” said Keshav Pandey of the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal, which was taking part in the meeting.

The negotiations will likely be tricky, however, because the Sherpas have no single leader and the moti-vations for their walkout range from honoring the dead to holding out for more substantial benefits.

While it was unclear just how many of the 400 or so Sherpas on the mountain had joined the walk-out, at least three major expedition companies have already canceled their climbs.

Most attempts to reach Everest’s summit are made in mid-May, when a brief window normally offers bet-

ter weather. Without the help of the Sherpas, the tiny Himalayan community that has become fa-mous for its high-altitude skills and endurance, it would be nearly impossible for climbers to scale Everest. Many climbers will have to forfeit most or all of the money they have spent to go up the moun-tain — $75,000 or more. Sherpas are key guides and also haul tons of gear up the mountain.

Dave Hahn, who has scaled Everest more than a dozen times, said on Rainier Mountaineering’s website that he met with other climbing team leaders and guides before deciding to halt the climb.

“Those meetings convinced us that the right course was to give up on Mount Everest for spring 2014,” Hahn wrote from base camp, add-ing that the risks outweighed the possibility of success.

However, the judge only sentenced him four months in prison. The defendant pleaded not guilty on the grounds of self defense. He denied to have molested the minor victim, I Ketut Andre Wiadnyana, 15, his gardener. Previously, the defendant was blamed for persecuting the gardener who was a minor and always said if he did not want to be punished.

Meanwhile, outside the trial, the prosecutor Eka Sabana said that the defendant was sent to jail because he heard that the defendant was reported again by his wife with the allegation of maltreatment. Prosecutor Eka Sabana said, indeed the notice of initial investigation (SP2D) had not been submitted by police investigator to the District Attorney. However, prosecutor Eka Sabana said that he heard or police had expressed about the act of the defendant orally, where the defendant was reported by reporting witness, doubling as his wife, that Michiel was reported to police on the charges of maltreatment.

In the verdict last Wednesday, the big- and tall-bod-ied man was declared legally and convincingly to have been proved guilty of committing physical violence against minor victim, I Ketut Andre Widnyana, 15. In his pleading, the defendant Michiel denied that he was guilty. He did admit that he hit the victim twice and kicked once. The defendant claimed to be guilty but only out of self-defense. At the time of thei incident, the defendant snooped by hiding behind the door when the victim knocked at the door. The victim came in with a sickle commonly used to weed in the garden of the defendant. However, the defendant claimed that the victim brought a sickle weapon (clurit). Allegedly the victim was about to steal from the house, given that his hands were clamped. After that, the victim was taken into the room and later recognized to have been beaten and kicked twice.

On the other hand, Ni Wayan Surni, the defendant’s wife, who witnessed the verdict trial against the defen-dant molesting her son, said she was not satisfied with the light sentence decided by the judges. It happened because her son had been beaten and kicked. Due to the blow that the defendant received, which caused his cheek under the ear to be swollen, her son could not go to school for four days. However, the snake having been impounded suddenly disappeared a few days later. The discovery of similar snake definitely surprised the officers on duty that day. SAN FRANCISCO - Apple on Wednes-day courted investors with stock split plans as hot iPhone sales pushed up profits while underscoring pressure for the com-pany to unveil “the next big thing.”

Apple shares jumped more than seven percent to $566.15 in after-market trade following the release of January-March earnings figures showing profit of $10.2 billion on $45.6 billion in revenue.

The earnings report came with Apple chief Tim Cook hinting that new prod-ucts are on the way from the maker of iPhones, iPads, iPods, and Macintosh computers.

“We’re very proud of our quarterly results, especially our strong iPhone sales and record revenue from services,”

Cook said in a press release.“We’re eagerly looking forward to

introducing more new products and services that only Apple could bring to market.”

Apple will spend an additional $30 billion to buy back shares of the com-pany’s stock, taking to $130 billion how much it plans to spend on repurchases and dividends by the end of next year.

Apple is pouring $90 billion into buying back shares because it believes the stock is undervalued in the market, according to executives.

“We’re confident in Apple’s future and see tremendous value in Apple’s stock, so we’re continuing to allocate the majority of our program to share repurchases,” Cook said.

“We’re also happy to be increasing

our dividend for the second time in less than two years.”

Apple will raise its quarterly dividend to $3.29 per common share and said it plans to bump up the figure annually.

Its board endorsed a seven-for-one stock split, with each shareholder of re-cord as of June 2 receiving six additional shares for each one they hold.

“We are taking this action to make Apple stock more accessible to a larger number of investors,” Cook added.

Forrester analyst Frank Gillett said the earnings showed a company “chugging along” on proven products but under pressure to rock the world with another innovation.

“We are ready,” Gillett said. “It is time for Apple to show us something from their labs; from behind their closed doors.”

The announcement late Wednesday is the latest in a series of policy changes aimed at car-rying out the ruling Communist Party’s pledge in November to give entrepreneurs and foreign investors a bigger role in the state-dominated economy.

It made no mention of the politically vola-tile issue of whether private investors would be allowed any control over entities in newly opened industries such as oil and hydro power that previously have been deemed strategic. Other industries cited were wind power, natu-ral gas storage and distribution, production of photovoltaic equipment for solar power, coal, railways and port operations.

Premier Li Keqiang said the Cabinet “de-cided to launch a number of projects to encour-age participation of ‘social capital’ in a number of areas such as infrastructure to promote fair competition,” according to the statement.

Chinese leaders are trying to replace a growth model based on exports and invest-ment that delivered three decades of explosive growth but is running out of steam. They want to nurture more self-sustaining growth based on domestic consumption.

SINGARAJA - Mass rabies vaccination program in Buleleng has been rolled back. The vaccination funded by the state budget and matching fund of regional budget is focused on targeting stray dogs owned by residents. It is based on consideration that stray dogs potentially threaten to transmit rabies in North Bali.

The Head of Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said the mass vaccination in the region had been begun on April 7, 2014. The vaccination was focused on targeting stray dogs because the distribution of dog population was quite a lot and quite threatening to transmit rabies. Meanwhile, pet dogs (race dogs—Ed) raised by hobbyists had been routinely vaccinated and its nurturing pattern had been very good, so the race dogs were not the main target in this mass rabies vaccination.

“Stray dogs and improper nurture have great possibility to transmit rabies, so we are focused on targeting the stray dogs. Meanwhile, race dogs are regularly vaccinated by its owners, so the potential for transmitting rabies is small, but if we find that they have not been vaccinated, we will also target them in this mass rabies vaccination,” he said.

According to Swatantra, since the beginning of mass rabies vaccination, his party could have vaccinated 2,853 dogs of totally 70,000 dogs targeted. The stray dogs having been successfully vaccinated scattered in 12 villages in Buleleng. Meanwhile, the remaining amount had not been vaccinated and the Livestock Agency attempted to complete the mass rabies vaccination in Buleleng until July 2014. “We still have three months to vaccinate so that the remaining 45,000 stray dogs becoming our target this year can be achieved,” he explained.

On the other hand, Swatantra said that from the evaluation made by vaccina-tion officers it was not found any significant constraints. However, the officers often got difficulty to catch stray dogs owned by residents because they were still reluctant to tie up their dogs. As a result, the officers had to try hard to catch the stray dogs to be vaccinated.

To that end, Swatantra urged residents to tie up their dog, so that the officers could directly vaccinated when arriving at location without having to waste time to catch the stray dogs. Apart from the support of residents, the hamlet chief and headman were also requested to help the vaccination officers in the field by allowing the elimination to stray dogs whose owner was unclear. “It does not necessarily mean if we are unable to catch, but we hope the residents to tie up their pets and familiarize residents to raise dog properly, so as not to endanger others or the owner,” he added.

To be noted, the rabies vaccination has been implemented since 2013. At that time, the Livestock Agency successfully vaccinated 53,733 stray dogs belonging to residents. In addition, there are 6,500 stray dogs having been vaccinated by team A. Not only that, the rabies vaccination has also been done when a dog bite case is found. From the sweeping made by Livestock Agency, it successfully vaccinated as many as 1,664 stray dogs. Based on this amount, the total stray dogs having been vaccinated for a year reached 61,800 heads.

Moreover, the cattle dispatched were regard-less of the age, gender and size. Meanwhile, the other cattle sellers had to go through rigorous selec-tion and should have permission of delivery.

A number of residents met last weekend claimed to know that such action was committed on certain days. The number of cattle dispatched was uncertain and re-gardless of the age. However, the

residents chose to remain silent because it had been a common knowledge. Though knowing it, the apparatus would take no ac-tion.

Meanwhile, some time ago the Head of the Jembrana Agriculture, Livestock and Plantation Agency, I Ketut Wiratma, said that so far there was restriction on Bali cattle delivery to outside Bali to keep its population. However, the county agency did not have the authority to do it. The permit was issued by provincial agency.

She could not yet explain in detail about the forms of sexual violence suf-fered by the new victim as he was still under medication examination.

Elvina pointed out that the new victim had just ascertained the physical violence that he had received at the school.

She added that the new victim was a class mate of AK, the one who was sub-jected to sexual assaults by the cleaning service workers at the school.

The JIS meanwhile, claimed that it

was not aware of the victim’s discov-ery.

“The Jakarta International School has not had enough information about the case,” JIS principal Timothy Carr declared, in a written statement on Thursday.

“We are now still collecting as much information as possible, including contacting the family of the victim,” he added.

He asserted JIS would tell about the issue soon after adequate information had been collected.

KPAI, meanwhile, has accused the JIS of not being transparent with regard to data about its teachers and students.

“JIS is still like earlier, not yet trans-parent,” Elvina pointed out.

In view of that, she hoped the police would investigate the JIS’s stance for a legal process.

She hoped that the JIS would help the police in their effort to investigate the sexual assault of AK.

The JIS’s transparency and willing-ness to open data about its teachers and students could help the police a lot in unveiling other possible suspects.

“If the JIS is cooperative, a list of suspects could be made,” she added.

Elvina explained that the JIS had given data, which is different from the one given by the victim’s parents.

The police are now also investigating possible negligence by the school in con-nection with the sexual assault of AK.

The police will also file a lawsuit against the school for operating the pre-school without the necessary permis-sions from the ministry of education.

The ministry of education has closed the JIS pre-school for good since Tues-day (Apr 22).

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s military commander said critics who called him out for wearing an especially luxurious watch should be quiet because the timepiece is actually a cheap Chinese fake. A Singapore website flagged a picture of the general and his watch this week, saying it was from the Richard Mille brand’s Filipe Massa collection and worth more than $100,000. The report caused a social media storm in a country where the average income is about $8.50 a day.

Gen. Moeldoko, who uses a single name, said it was a Chinese-made copy and cost only 5 million rupiah ($430). He removed the watch from his wrist and showed it to reporters who were cover-ing a meeting Wednesday of Indonesia and Philippines military officials.

“This is a Chinese-made fake watch... how could such a watch be original,” he said while slamming the watch on the floor.

Richard Mille did not immediately respond to a question about the general’s remarks, which appeared to indicate a lack of concern for intellectual property rights, not uncommon in Indonesia.

The website, mothership.sg, also showed photos of Moeldoko wearing other luxury watches, including an Audemars Piguet Mil-lenary — either a $43,000 Chronograph or a $476,600 Minute Repeater limited edition.

Moeldoko, who became Indonesia’s military chief last August, reported total assets of about 36 billion rupiah ($3 million) to the anti-graft commission last year.

PORT ALICE, British Columbia — A magnitude 6.6 quake was re-corded Wednesday night in the Pacific Ocean off the northwest corner of British Columbia’s Vancouver Island, the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. There was no danger of a tsunami, according to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska.

The quake hit at 8:10 p.m. local time and was centered about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of Port Alice, British Columbia, and about 280 miles (450 kilometers) northwest of Seattle, Washington. It occurred at a depth of 7 miles (11.4 kilometers). It was followed by aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 and 4.2, the USGS said.

Port Hardy resident Jennifer Nickerson said the quake caused lights to sway and the fish tank in the hotel where she works to rock. In less than two hours, more than 650 people in nearly three dozen cities logged on to the earthquake information site to report feeling the quake.

The online reports came from as far away as Kelowna in south-central British Columbia and the Seattle suburbs of Auburn and Bellevue, said USGS geophysicist Dale Grant in the Golden, Colorado, earthquake in-formation center. None of the online comments reported damage, Grant said. The quake was the strongest in the area since another 6.6 on Nov. 2, 2004, Grant said.


HONG KONG — Hong Kong’s top court has rejected a final bid for an appeal by an American convicted of drugging her wealthy banker husband and bashing him to death.

The Court of Final Appeal dismissed Nancy Kissel’s application on Thursday.

Kissel was convicted twice for the 2003 murder of her husband, Robert Kissel. The case, dubbed the “Milkshake Murder,” grabbed world head-lines with its lurid tale of the breakdown of a wealthy expatriate marriage in the southern Chinese city.

She was sentenced to life in 2012, matching the result of an earlier trial that was overturned.

Prosecutors said Kissel, a housewife, gave her husband a sedative-laced milkshake and then bludgeoned him with a metal ornament before wrapping his body up in a carpet.

BARCELONA - Four-time finalist David Ferrer crashed out in the second round of the Barcelona Open on Wednes-day, producing a rusty performance to lose 6-4 6-2 to Georgia’s Teymuraz Gabashvili.

The world number five, who beat fellow Spaniard Rafa Nadal en route to the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters last week, was a long way from his best against a player 50 players below him on the ATP rankings.

Gabashvili made precious few mistakes, breaking the second seed four times on his way to victory.

“This was one of my best victories, no in fact it is my best ever, beating David Ferrer,” the Russian told reporters.

“I went into the game knowing that I had to be steady and controlled which is what I managed to do.”

Gabashvili raced into a 3-0 lead in the first set but it ap-peared as though Ferrer was back on track when he levelled at 3-3. Ferrer, continued to make unforced errors though, and once he went a set behind he looked dispirited.

SAO PAULO — FIFA’s top World Cup official is satisfied with the pace of work at the stadium in the western Brazilian city of Cuiaba even though a delay in the delivery of seats prompted the venue’s inaugura-tion to be postponed this week. FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said Wednesday that local organizers shouldn’t face major problems finalizing the Arena Pantanal in time for the World Cup. The stadium is one of the three yet to be completed less than two months before

the tournament’s opener.Valcke said it’s important all seats are installed by May 5, but he

is “fine” and “happy” with what he saw at the venue that will host four World Cup matches.

Organizers canceled this weekend’s official inauguration because some 5,000 seats were not delivered on time for the 41,000-capacity stadium. Officials said they hope to officially open the venue in mid-May, about a month before the World Cup opener. The venue staged its first official match earlier this month, but only half of the seats were in place at the time.

“There is no major issue,” Valcke said of the Arena Pantanal. “It’s just work to be finished and just to make sure that we can run some test

events and we can be ready for the time we will receive the stadium from the city. I’m fine, I’m happy with Cuiaba and as long as we keep this date of the 5th of May for all the seats installation and some additional work which has to be done.” Valcke began a tour of host cities with “potential issues” regarding their preparations on Tuesday.

In his visit to Sao Paulo, he said organizers don’t have “a minute” waste to make sure the Itaquerao stadium is ready to host the World Cup opener on June 12. In the southern city of Curitiba, where 27,000 seats are yet to be installed at the Arena da Baixada, he said there is “still lots to do inside and outside” the stadium.

“We are exactly 50 days away from the World Cup,” Valcke said in Cuiaba. “You are not talking anymore about moving any game from a stadium to another one. You are not talking about moving a (host) city to another one. We have 64 games to be played in Brazil and all these games will be played as we have on the match schedule.”


LONDON — Manchester Unit-ed’s owners will be relying on the strength of the club’s brand to soften the impact of a sudden downturn in its fortunes over the past six months.

Few clubs have the money-making abilities of United, which has been setting revenue records even as the team endured lows on the pitch not witnessed for 24 years during the brief but woeful mana-gerial reign of David Moyes. His spell in charge was abruptly ended on Tuesday before his first season had even drawn to a close.

For all United’s success in squeezing every dollar, euro and yen out of its brand, handling a managerial succession has proved more challenging. Not only has it created uncertainty for the New York-listed business, it has also provided a renewed platform for protests against the American Glazer family that bought the club nine years ago.

The Florida-based Glazers have no emotional attachment to the 136-year-old club they bought amid street protests. They refuse to engage with fans and never justify decisions in public. While the hi-erarchy is silent, fans’ groups have a more powerful voice to protest

against the family, which loaded hundreds of millions of dollars of debt onto the club through a lever-aged takeover.

“United probably peaked on the pitch in 2009 and since then we’ve been in a gradual decline, slowed only by the genius of Sir Alex Ferguson,” said Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust. “Despite some key suc-cesses in that time, if anything, the other elite European clubs have moved further ahead, while the domestic challenge has also become much stronger.”

Since 2005, more than $1.1 billion has been spent servicing the club’s debt, which is currently around $600 million. Drasdo ar-gues the club has “limited funds available for investment in the playing squad.” United has been generating record revenue, though, each quarter, with turnover set to exceed $700 million in the 2013-14 financial year.

United fans have cast envious eyes at Abu Dhabi-owned neighbor Manchester City and Qatar-backed French champion Paris Saint-Germain. Both clubs have been investing their owners’ oil wealth during splurges in recent transfer windows.

But who could have forecast

that a United side that won the Premier League by 11 points before Ferguson retired last May after 26 trophy-filled years would plummet to seventh this season under Moyes? The Glazers feared a post-Ferguson slump but never expected such a dismal showing, ditching Moyes just 10 months into a six-year contract.

Since 2012, when 10 percent of United was floated by the Glazers, the rise and fall of the club’s shares have been as keenly watched as the team’s results. Wall Street investors initially welcomed the dismissal of Moyes, with shares soaring by seven per-cent at one point after Tuesday’s announcement — reaching their highest level since Ferguson’s retirement.

Those gains were wiped out on Wednesday, with shares dropping by almost six percent to $17.69 in morning trading, sending the club’s value below $3 billion again to $2.9 billion.

“Following on as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson was always going to prove a Herculean task ... with arguably deeper disappoint-ment at stake should the trophy cabinet remain bare for a second season,” said Andrew Wilkinson, chief market analyst at Connecti-cut-based Interactive Brokers.


BRISBANE, Australia — A vacancy at Sydney FC may have given former Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero another career option in the A-League.

Del Piero, who turns 40 in November, has yet to sign a new playing contract for next season after two years as the highest profile marquee signing ever in the Australian domestic competition.

But the firing Wednesday of Frank Farina — the team’s seventh coach in nine seasons — has triggered hype in the Australian media that the 2006 World Cup winner might move into a coaching role next season.

The A-League certainly needs Del Piero to stick around. Despite play-ing with sore hamstrings for a good part of this season, Del Piero scored 10 goals after scoring 14 in his inaugural season of 2012-13.

When he was signed in September 2012, season ticket sales at Sydney FC surged by several thousand overnight. And in his first season in the league, attendance increased by more than 100,000 and numbers were up by a similar amount this season.Del Piero couldn’t get Sydney into the playoffs during his first season, but the Sky Blues made it among the top six this year, losing 2-1 to Melbourne Victory in the first playoff round last weekend and ultimately ending Farina’s reign as coach.

The front-runner for the vacant manager’s job is Graham Arnold, who recently left Japanese club Vegalta Sendai. Another contender mentioned is former Dutch player and coach Han Berger, who will step down from his role as technical director at Football Federation Australia in June.But Sydney and the league can’t get past Del Piero for sheer star power.

“Also lingering is the omnipresent figure of marquee player Alessandro Del Piero, and with the Italian’s desire to enter management growing each year, many believe he could make a seamless transition to the dugout,” the Sydney Morning Herald said Thursday.

ELUSIVE CROWN

Under the decorated Ancelotti, Real have high hopes they can fi-nally claim the elusive 10th European crown they have been chasing since their last triumph in 2002. There was a crackling atmosphere at their giant Bernabeu arena before kickoff and the home fans unfurled a huge banner proclaiming their status as “Kings of Europe”.

However, it was current champions and five-times winners Bayern who bossed the early stages with the Real players obviously under instructions to sit back and try to punish their opponents on the break. Benzema’s goal came from exactly that scenario. Bayern midfielder Toni Kroos had a shot blocked in the Real penalty area and the home side seized possession and poured forward.

Ronaldo played Fabio Coentrao in on the left and his low cross evaded the Bayern defence and found Benzema waiting at the far post to tap into an empty net. Real were also first to threaten in the second period thanks to an error in the Bayern defence and Ronaldo, back after knee and thigh muscle injuries, burst clear on the right of the area and forced a fine diving save from Manuel Neuer with a low shot.

The Portugal captain has a record-equalling 14 goals in the Champions League this season and was clearly hungry to set a new best and Neuer again had to be alert when Ronaldo cracked a low shot towards the corner in the 68th.

Bayern huffed and puffed, with Ar-jen Robben and Franck Ribery prob-ing down wither flank, but struggled to find a way through the massed ranks of Real defenders.

SAO PAULO — FIFA’s top World Cup official is satisfied with the pace of work at the stadium in the western Brazilian city of Cuiaba even though a delay in the delivery of seats prompted the venue’s inaugura-tion to be postponed this week. FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said Wednesday that local organizers shouldn’t face major problems finalizing the Arena Pantanal in time for the World Cup. The stadium is one of the three yet to be completed less than two months before

the tournament’s opener.Valcke said it’s important all seats are installed by May 5, but he

is “fine” and “happy” with what he saw at the venue that will host four World Cup matches.

Organizers canceled this weekend’s official inauguration because some 5,000 seats were not delivered on time for the 41,000-capacity stadium. Officials said they hope to officially open the venue in mid-May, about a month before the World Cup opener. The venue staged its first official match earlier this month, but only half of the seats were in place at the time.

“There is no major issue,” Valcke said of the Arena Pantanal. “It’s just work to be finished and just to make sure that we can run some test

events and we can be ready for the time we will receive the stadium from the city. I’m fine, I’m happy with Cuiaba and as long as we keep this date of the 5th of May for all the seats installation and some additional work which has to be done.” Valcke began a tour of host cities with “potential issues” regarding their preparations on Tuesday.

In his visit to Sao Paulo, he said organizers don’t have “a minute” waste to make sure the Itaquerao stadium is ready to host the World Cup opener on June 12. In the southern city of Curitiba, where 27,000 seats are yet to be installed at the Arena da Baixada, he said there is “still lots to do inside and outside” the stadium.

“We are exactly 50 days away from the World Cup,” Valcke said in Cuiaba. “You are not talking anymore about moving any game from a stadium to another one. You are not talking about moving a (host) city to another one. We have 64 games to be played in Brazil and all these games will be played as we have on the match schedule.”


LONDON — Manchester Unit-ed’s owners will be relying on the strength of the club’s brand to soften the impact of a sudden downturn in its fortunes over the past six months.

Few clubs have the money-making abilities of United, which has been setting revenue records even as the team endured lows on the pitch not witnessed for 24 years during the brief but woeful mana-gerial reign of David Moyes. His spell in charge was abruptly ended on Tuesday before his first season had even drawn to a close.

For all United’s success in squeezing every dollar, euro and yen out of its brand, handling a managerial succession has proved more challenging. Not only has it created uncertainty for the New York-listed business, it has also provided a renewed platform for protests against the American Glazer family that bought the club nine years ago.

The Florida-based Glazers have no emotional attachment to the 136-year-old club they bought amid street protests. They refuse to engage with fans and never justify decisions in public. While the hi-erarchy is silent, fans’ groups have a more powerful voice to protest

against the family, which loaded hundreds of millions of dollars of debt onto the club through a lever-aged takeover.

“United probably peaked on the pitch in 2009 and since then we’ve been in a gradual decline, slowed only by the genius of Sir Alex Ferguson,” said Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of the Manchester United Supporters’ Trust. “Despite some key suc-cesses in that time, if anything, the other elite European clubs have moved further ahead, while the domestic challenge has also become much stronger.”

Since 2005, more than $1.1 billion has been spent servicing the club’s debt, which is currently around $600 million. Drasdo ar-gues the club has “limited funds available for investment in the playing squad.” United has been generating record revenue, though, each quarter, with turnover set to exceed $700 million in the 2013-14 financial year.

United fans have cast envious eyes at Abu Dhabi-owned neighbor Manchester City and Qatar-backed French champion Paris Saint-Germain. Both clubs have been investing their owners’ oil wealth during splurges in recent transfer windows.

But who could have forecast

that a United side that won the Premier League by 11 points before Ferguson retired last May after 26 trophy-filled years would plummet to seventh this season under Moyes? The Glazers feared a post-Ferguson slump but never expected such a dismal showing, ditching Moyes just 10 months into a six-year contract.

Since 2012, when 10 percent of United was floated by the Glazers, the rise and fall of the club’s shares have been as keenly watched as the team’s results. Wall Street investors initially welcomed the dismissal of Moyes, with shares soaring by seven per-cent at one point after Tuesday’s announcement — reaching their highest level since Ferguson’s retirement.

Those gains were wiped out on Wednesday, with shares dropping by almost six percent to $17.69 in morning trading, sending the club’s value below $3 billion again to $2.9 billion.

“Following on as the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson was always going to prove a Herculean task ... with arguably deeper disappoint-ment at stake should the trophy cabinet remain bare for a second season,” said Andrew Wilkinson, chief market analyst at Connecti-cut-based Interactive Brokers.


BRISBANE, Australia — A vacancy at Sydney FC may have given former Juventus striker Alessandro Del Piero another career option in the A-League.

Del Piero, who turns 40 in November, has yet to sign a new playing contract for next season after two years as the highest profile marquee signing ever in the Australian domestic competition.

But the firing Wednesday of Frank Farina — the team’s seventh coach in nine seasons — has triggered hype in the Australian media that the 2006 World Cup winner might move into a coaching role next season.

The A-League certainly needs Del Piero to stick around. Despite play-ing with sore hamstrings for a good part of this season, Del Piero scored 10 goals after scoring 14 in his inaugural season of 2012-13.

When he was signed in September 2012, season ticket sales at Sydney FC surged by several thousand overnight. And in his first season in the league, attendance increased by more than 100,000 and numbers were up by a similar amount this season.Del Piero couldn’t get Sydney into the playoffs during his first season, but the Sky Blues made it among the top six this year, losing 2-1 to Melbourne Victory in the first playoff round last weekend and ultimately ending Farina’s reign as coach.

The front-runner for the vacant manager’s job is Graham Arnold, who recently left Japanese club Vegalta Sendai. Another contender mentioned is former Dutch player and coach Han Berger, who will step down from his role as technical director at Football Federation Australia in June.But Sydney and the league can’t get past Del Piero for sheer star power.

“Also lingering is the omnipresent figure of marquee player Alessandro Del Piero, and with the Italian’s desire to enter management growing each year, many believe he could make a seamless transition to the dugout,” the Sydney Morning Herald said Thursday.

Under the decorated Ancelotti, Real have high hopes they can fi-nally claim the elusive 10th European crown they have been chasing since their last triumph in 2002. There was a crackling atmosphere at their giant Bernabeu arena before kickoff and the home fans unfurled a huge banner proclaiming their status as “Kings of Europe”.

However, it was current champions and five-times winners Bayern who bossed the early stages with the Real players obviously under instructions to sit back and try to punish their opponents on the break. Benzema’s goal came from exactly that scenario. Bayern midfielder Toni Kroos had a shot blocked in the Real penalty area and the home side seized possession and poured forward.

Ronaldo played Fabio Coentrao in on the left and his low cross evaded the Bayern defence and found Benzema waiting at the far post to tap into an empty net. Real were also first to threaten in the second period thanks to an error in the Bayern defence and Ronaldo, back after knee and thigh muscle injuries, burst clear on the right of the area and forced a fine diving save from Manuel Neuer with a low shot.

The Portugal captain has a record-equalling 14 goals in the Champions League this season and was clearly hungry to set a new best and Neuer again had to be alert when Ronaldo cracked a low shot towards the corner in the 68th.

Bayern huffed and puffed, with Ar-jen Robben and Franck Ribery prob-ing down wither flank, but struggled to find a way through the massed ranks of Real defenders.

BARCELONA - Four-time finalist David Ferrer crashed out in the second round of the Barcelona Open on Wednes-day, producing a rusty performance to lose 6-4 6-2 to Georgia’s Teymuraz Gabashvili.

The world number five, who beat fellow Spaniard Rafa Nadal en route to the semi-finals of the Monte Carlo Masters last week, was a long way from his best against a player 50 players below him on the ATP rankings.

Gabashvili made precious few mistakes, breaking the second seed four times on his way to victory.

“This was one of my best victories, no in fact it is my best ever, beating David Ferrer,” the Russian told reporters.

“I went into the game knowing that I had to be steady and controlled which is what I managed to do.”

Gabashvili raced into a 3-0 lead in the first set but it ap-peared as though Ferrer was back on track when he levelled at 3-3. Ferrer, continued to make unforced errors though, and once he went a set behind he looked dispirited.

Elvina stated that KPAI, the Victim and Witness Protection Institute (LPSK) had come to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Headquarters to trace information about the discovery.

She confirmed that she would report the discovery as new evidence to deepen the investigation in the earlier sexual violence case of a six-year old JIS pre-school child AK.

She could not yet explain in detail about the forms of sexual violence suf-fered by the new victim as he was still under medication examination.

Elvina pointed out that the new victim had just ascertained the physical violence that he had received at the school.

She added that the new victim was a class mate of AK, the one who was sub-jected to sexual assaults by the cleaning service workers at the school.

The JIS meanwhile, claimed that it

was not aware of the victim’s discov-ery.

“The Jakarta International School has not had enough information about the case,” JIS principal Timothy Carr declared, in a written statement on Thursday.

“We are now still collecting as much information as possible, including contacting the family of the victim,” he added.

He asserted JIS would tell about the issue soon after adequate information had been collected.

KPAI, meanwhile, has accused the JIS of not being transparent with regard to data about its teachers and students.

“JIS is still like earlier, not yet trans-parent,” Elvina pointed out.

In view of that, she hoped the police would investigate the JIS’s stance for a legal process.

She hoped that the JIS would help the police in their effort to investigate the sexual assault of AK.

The JIS’s transparency and willing-ness to open data about its teachers and students could help the police a lot in unveiling other possible suspects.

“If the JIS is cooperative, a list of suspects could be made,” she added.

Elvina explained that the JIS had given data, which is different from the one given by the victim’s parents.

The police are now also investigating possible negligence by the school in con-nection with the sexual assault of AK.

The police will also file a lawsuit against the school for operating the pre-school without the necessary permis-sions from the ministry of education.

The ministry of education has closed the JIS pre-school for good since Tues-day (Apr 22).

AntaraJAKARTA - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP),

which is the likely winner of the legislative elections on April 9, has claimed that the running mate for Jokowi will be a surprise, Rieke Diah Pitaloka stated.

“Soon, there will be a surprise. There will be a surprise movement for the people,” the party’s association chairperson noted at City Hall, after meeting with Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on Thursday.

She meanwhile explained that the party has already shortlisted the list of potential vice presidential candidates for the presidential election on July 9, from five to three, and with regard to the three candidates, an agreement has also been reached.

“I do not know if the surprise would be the announcement of the vice presidential candidate or not. What is important is that there will be a more important movement for the people,” she pointed out.

Regarding her meeting with Jokowi, she stated that she had met with him to discuss certain substantial issues, which are more im-portant for the people.

JAKARTA — Indonesia’s military commander said critics who called him out for wearing an especially luxurious watch should be quiet because the timepiece is actually a cheap Chinese fake. A Singapore website flagged a picture of the general and his watch this week, saying it was from the Richard Mille brand’s Filipe Massa collection and worth more than $100,000. The report caused a social media storm in a country where the average income is about $8.50 a day.

Gen. Moeldoko, who uses a single name, said it was a Chinese-made copy and cost only 5 million rupiah ($430). He removed the watch from his wrist and showed it to reporters who were cover-ing a meeting Wednesday of Indonesia and Philippines military officials.

“This is a Chinese-made fake watch... how could such a watch be original,” he said while slamming the watch on the floor.

Richard Mille did not immediately respond to a question about the general’s remarks, which appeared to indicate a lack of concern for intellectual property rights, not uncommon in Indonesia.

The website, mothership.sg, also showed photos of Moeldoko wearing other luxury watches, including an Audemars Piguet Mil-lenary — either a $43,000 Chronograph or a $476,600 Minute Repeater limited edition.

Danwon High School was at times the site of even more direct grieving, as relatives in funeral processions visited their loved ones’ classrooms before moving on to cremate the body. Education officials said the first two days of classes will focus on helping stu-dents cope with losses and trauma, with help from psychiatrists and professional counselors.

Nearby at Olympic Memo-rial Museum, a flower-strewn temporary memorial to the ap-proximately 250 students dead or missing drew a stream of black-clad mourners. “I am very sad, but at the same time, I also feel resentful and angry,” said busi-nessman Lee Dong-geun. When “I entered, I saw the faces of those students and could not fight back my tears.”

So far 159 bodies have been

pulled from the water, with 143 people still missing. Hundreds of divers are working to retrieve the remaining bodies. The task is becoming more difficult be-cause divers must now break through cabin walls to continue their search. Many of the bodies already retrieved were in a larger lounge area.

“The lounge is one big open space, so once in it we got our search done straight away. But in the case of the cabins, we will have to break down the walls in between because they are all compartments,” said Koh Myung-seok, spokesman for the government-wide emergency task force. PORT ALICE, British Columbia — A magnitude 6.6 quake was re-corded Wednesday night in the Pacific Ocean off the northwest corner of British Columbia’s Vancouver Island, the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center said. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. There was no danger of a tsunami, according to the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska.

The quake hit at 8:10 p.m. local time and was centered about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southwest of Port Alice, British Columbia, and about 280 miles (450 kilometers) northwest of Seattle, Washington. It occurred at a depth of 7 miles (11.4 kilometers). It was followed by aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 and 4.2, the USGS said.

Port Hardy resident Jennifer Nickerson said the quake caused lights to sway and the fish tank in the hotel where she works to rock. In less than two hours, more than 650 people in nearly three dozen cities logged on to the earthquake information site to report feeling the quake.

The online reports came from as far away as Kelowna in south-central British Columbia and the Seattle suburbs of Auburn and Bellevue, said USGS geophysicist Dale Grant in the Golden, Colorado, earthquake in-formation center. None of the online comments reported damage, Grant said. The quake was the strongest in the area since another 6.6 on Nov. 2, 2004, Grant said.


HONG KONG — Hong Kong’s top court has rejected a final bid for an appeal by an American convicted of drugging her wealthy banker husband and bashing him to death.

The Court of Final Appeal dismissed Nancy Kissel’s application on Thursday.

Kissel was convicted twice for the 2003 murder of her husband, Robert Kissel. The case, dubbed the “Milkshake Murder,” grabbed world head-lines with its lurid tale of the breakdown of a wealthy expatriate marriage in the southern Chinese city.

She was sentenced to life in 2012, matching the result of an earlier trial that was overturned.

Prosecutors said Kissel, a housewife, gave her husband a sedative-laced milkshake and then bludgeoned him with a metal ornament before wrapping his body up in a carpet.

SAN FRANCISCO - Apple on Wednes-day courted investors with stock split plans as hot iPhone sales pushed up profits while underscoring pressure for the com-pany to unveil “the next big thing.”

Apple shares jumped more than seven percent to $566.15 in after-market trade following the release of January-March earnings figures showing profit of $10.2 billion on $45.6 billion in revenue.

The earnings report came with Apple chief Tim Cook hinting that new prod-ucts are on the way from the maker of iPhones, iPads, iPods, and Macintosh computers.

“We’re very proud of our quarterly results, especially our strong iPhone sales and record revenue from services,”

Cook said in a press release.“We’re eagerly looking forward to

introducing more new products and services that only Apple could bring to market.”

Apple will spend an additional $30 billion to buy back shares of the com-pany’s stock, taking to $130 billion how much it plans to spend on repurchases and dividends by the end of next year.

Apple is pouring $90 billion into buying back shares because it believes the stock is undervalued in the market, according to executives.

“We’re confident in Apple’s future and see tremendous value in Apple’s stock, so we’re continuing to allocate the majority of our program to share repurchases,” Cook said.

“We’re also happy to be increasing

our dividend for the second time in less than two years.”

Apple will raise its quarterly dividend to $3.29 per common share and said it plans to bump up the figure annually.

Its board endorsed a seven-for-one stock split, with each shareholder of re-cord as of June 2 receiving six additional shares for each one they hold.

“We are taking this action to make Apple stock more accessible to a larger number of investors,” Cook added.

Forrester analyst Frank Gillett said the earnings showed a company “chugging along” on proven products but under pressure to rock the world with another innovation.

“We are ready,” Gillett said. “It is time for Apple to show us something from their labs; from behind their closed doors.”

The announcement late Wednesday is the latest in a series of policy changes aimed at car-rying out the ruling Communist Party’s pledge in November to give entrepreneurs and foreign investors a bigger role in the state-dominated economy.

It made no mention of the politically vola-tile issue of whether private investors would be allowed any control over entities in newly opened industries such as oil and hydro power that previously have been deemed strategic. Other industries cited were wind power, natu-ral gas storage and distribution, production of photovoltaic equipment for solar power, coal, railways and port operations.

Premier Li Keqiang said the Cabinet “de-cided to launch a number of projects to encour-age participation of ‘social capital’ in a number of areas such as infrastructure to promote fair competition,” according to the statement.

Li, the country’s top economic official, said guidance on the role of foreign and private in-vestors would be released as soon as possible.

Chinese leaders are trying to replace a growth model based on exports and invest-ment that delivered three decades of explosive growth but is running out of steam. They want to nurture more self-sustaining growth based on domestic consumption.

At the same time, the ruling party wants to retain control of the economy even as entrepre-neurs are given a bigger role.

Any attempt to give outsiders a voice in how state industries are run is likely to face opposition from party factions that rely on those industries as a source of money and jobs for supporters.

Economic growth has slowed steadily over the past two years as Chinese leaders try to nurture more self-sustaining domestic con-sumption. It declined in 2013 to 7.7 percent, the lowest full-year rate in two decades, and decelerated to 7.4 percent in the first three months of this year.

SINGARAJA - Mass rabies vaccination program in Buleleng has been rolled back. The vaccination funded by the state budget and matching fund of regional budget is focused on targeting stray dogs owned by residents. It is based on consideration that stray dogs potentially threaten to transmit rabies in North Bali.

The Head of Buleleng Agriculture and Livestock Agency, Nyoman Swatantra, said the mass vaccination in the region had been begun on April 7, 2014. The vaccination was focused on targeting stray dogs because the distribution of dog population was quite a lot and quite threatening to transmit rabies. Meanwhile, pet dogs (race dogs—Ed) raised by hobbyists had been routinely vaccinated and its nurturing pattern had been very good, so the race dogs were not the main target in this mass rabies vaccination.

“Stray dogs and improper nurture have great possibility to transmit rabies, so we are focused on targeting the stray dogs. Meanwhile, race dogs are regularly vaccinated by its owners, so the potential for transmitting rabies is small, but if we find that they have not been vaccinated, we will also target them in this mass rabies vaccination,” he said.

According to Swatantra, since the beginning of mass rabies vaccination, his party could have vaccinated 2,853 dogs of totally 70,000 dogs targeted. The stray dogs having been successfully vaccinated scattered in 12 villages in Buleleng. Meanwhile, the remaining amount had not been vaccinated and the Livestock Agency attempted to complete the mass rabies vaccination in Buleleng until July 2014. “We still have three months to vaccinate so that the remaining 45,000 stray dogs becoming our target this year can be achieved,” he explained.

On the other hand, Swatantra said that from the evaluation made by vaccina-tion officers it was not found any significant constraints. However, the officers often got difficulty to catch stray dogs owned by residents because they were still reluctant to tie up their dogs. As a result, the officers had to try hard to catch the stray dogs to be vaccinated.

To that end, Swatantra urged residents to tie up their dog, so that the officers could directly vaccinated when arriving at location without having to waste time to catch the stray dogs. Apart from the support of residents, the hamlet chief and headman were also requested to help the vaccination officers in the field by allowing the elimination to stray dogs whose owner was unclear. “It does not necessarily mean if we are unable to catch, but we hope the residents to tie up their pets and familiarize residents to raise dog properly, so as not to endanger others or the owner,” he added.

To be noted, the rabies vaccination has been implemented since 2013. At that time, the Livestock Agency successfully vaccinated 53,733 stray dogs belonging to residents. In addition, there are 6,500 stray dogs having been vaccinated by team A. Not only that, the rabies vaccination has also been done when a dog bite case is found. From the sweeping made by Livestock Agency, it successfully vaccinated as many as 1,664 stray dogs. Based on this amount, the total stray dogs having been vaccinated for a year reached 61,800 heads.

Moreover, the cattle dispatched were regard-less of the age, gender and size. Meanwhile, the other cattle sellers had to go through rigorous selec-tion and should have permission of delivery.

A number of residents met last weekend claimed to know that such action was committed on certain days. The number of cattle dispatched was uncertain and re-gardless of the age. However, the

residents chose to remain silent because it had been a common knowledge. Though knowing it, the apparatus would take no ac-tion.

Meanwhile, some time ago the Head of the Jembrana Agriculture, Livestock and Plantation Agency, I Ketut Wiratma, said that so far there was restriction on Bali cattle delivery to outside Bali to keep its population. However, the county agency did not have the authority to do it. The permit was issued by provincial agency.

“There are some things the United States can do alone but ultimately it’s going to have to be a joint effort, a collective effort,” Obama said dur-ing a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Obama’s comments underscored the difficulties he faces in devising a response to Russia’s aggressive moves on Ukraine’s eastern border and the growing unrest in the coun-try driven by pro-Russian insurgents. He did not put a timeline on when sanctions could be applied, saying only it was a matter of days, not weeks.

Obama complained that militias and armed men continue to take over government buildings in Ukraine in defiance of Ukrainian authorities. Pro-Russian insurgents have been especially active in eastern Ukraine in the aftermath of Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula. Under an agree-ment struck last week in Geneva, Russia had agreed to take steps to defuse the tensions.

“So far we have seen them not abide by the spirit or the letter of the

agreement in Geneva,” Obama said. If that continues, he said, “there will be further consequences and we will ramp up further sanctions.”

Obama’s caution came in the wake of a warning by the Russian foreign minister that attacks on Rus-sian citizens or interests in Ukraine would bring a firm response. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov compared the circumstances to those that triggered the war with Georgia in 2008.

By acknowledging that he still needed cooperation from allies to impose new sanctions, Obama laid bare one of the key obstacles to presenting a united front against Russia. Many European countries rely on Russian energy and fear that increased pressure on Moscow could hurt their own economies.

“It’s important to emphasize that throughout this process our goal has been to change Mr. Putin’s calculus, that our preference is to resolve this diplomatically, that sanctions hurt Russia more than anybody else but they are disruptive to the global economy,” Obama said.

“The main objective of this trip is to attempt to avert the shutdown of the mountaineering season and convince the Sherpas not to cancel their climb,” said Keshav Pandey of the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal, which was taking part in the meeting.

The negotiations will likely be tricky, however, because the Sherpas have no single leader and the moti-vations for their walkout range from honoring the dead to holding out for more substantial benefits.

While it was unclear just how many of the 400 or so Sherpas on the mountain had joined the walk-out, at least three major expedition companies have already canceled their climbs.

Most attempts to reach Everest’s summit are made in mid-May, when a brief window normally offers bet-

ter weather. Without the help of the Sherpas, the tiny Himalayan community that has become fa-mous for its high-altitude skills and endurance, it would be nearly impossible for climbers to scale Everest. Many climbers will have to forfeit most or all of the money they have spent to go up the moun-tain — $75,000 or more. Sherpas are key guides and also haul tons of gear up the mountain.

Dave Hahn, who has scaled Everest more than a dozen times, said on Rainier Mountaineering’s website that he met with other climbing team leaders and guides before deciding to halt the climb.

“Those meetings convinced us that the right course was to give up on Mount Everest for spring 2014,” Hahn wrote from base camp, add-ing that the risks outweighed the possibility of success.

Michiel of Rotterdam origin, spoke in English, ac-companied by his interpreter, stated that the prosecutor of Amlapura District Attorney demanded an eight-month sentence and one year probation. However, the judge only sentenced him four months in prison. The defendant pleaded not guilty on the grounds of self defense. He denied to have molested the minor victim, I Ketut Andre Wiadnyana, 15, his gardener. Previously, the defendant was blamed for persecuting the gardener who was a minor and always said if he did not want to be punished.

Meanwhile, outside the trial, the prosecutor Eka Sabana said that the defendant was sent to jail because he heard that the defendant was reported again by his wife with the allegation of maltreatment. Prosecutor Eka Sabana said, indeed the notice of initial investigation (SP2D) had not been submitted by police investigator to the District Attorney. However, prosecutor Eka Sabana said that he heard or police had expressed about the act of the defendant orally, where the defendant was reported by reporting witness, doubling as his wife, that Michiel was reported to police on the charges of maltreatment.

In the verdict last Wednesday, the big- and tall-bod-ied man was declared legally and convincingly to have been proved guilty of committing physical violence against minor victim, I Ketut Andre Widnyana, 15. Previously, he also used to enter the defendant’s house after being allowed by the maid witness, Ni Luh Ayu.

In his pleading, the defendant Michiel denied that he was guilty. He did admit that he hit the victim twice and kicked once. The defendant claimed to be guilty but only out of self-defense. At the time of thei incident, the defendant snooped by hiding behind the door when the victim knocked at the door. The victim came in with a sickle commonly used to weed in the garden of the defendant. However, the defendant claimed that the victim brought a sickle weapon (clurit). Allegedly the victim was about to steal from the house, given that his hands were clamped. After that, the victim was taken into the room and later recognized to have been beaten and kicked twice.

On the other hand, Ni Wayan Surni, the defendant’s wife, who witnessed the verdict trial against the defen-dant molesting her son, said she was not satisfied with the light sentence decided by the judges. It happened because her son had been beaten and kicked. Due to the blow that the defendant received, which caused his cheek under the ear to be swollen, her son could not go to school for four days. “Actually, the planning has been made by our team to improve and refine along seven kilometers (Mertasari Beach—Ed) namely in terms pathway considered less com-fortable because it is too narrow,” said Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Mari Elka Pangestu, recently.

According to her, the pathway or the road in the coastal area would be widened, so it would be more convenient for pedestrians and bicycle users. Not only that, the minister would also make arrangement against the stalls and public spaces such as toilets and other public facilities.

“The arrangement will be done this year. I am happy with Sanur, so it will be more convenient if the infrastruc-ture is repaired. Currently, it is uncomfortable because some areas are very crowded. It will be better if the ar-rangement is without relocating traders, but it can still be comfortable,” she said.

She hoped that local government and Ministry of Public Works worked on along the coast that had not been worked on by Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy. “We have allocated a budget worth IDR 5 billion to arrange the area along the Sanur Beach,” she said.

She added the project would work on a number of new facilities. Among them, there would be jogging track, rest area, souvenirs shops as well as waste management. “The concept is to improve the existing infrastructure such as by providing rest area and information center,” she explained.

In addition to arranging the Sanur Beach area, her party also targeted some deserted beach areas to enhance tour-ist visit. Meanwhile, Kuta, Nusa Dua and Kintamani area were considered other strategic areas in Bali.

Mertasari Beach is a part of Sanur Beach that will be arranged. This Mertasari Beach is facing north, while Sanur Beach facing west. So to see the sunrise, position of the sun is unlike in the middle of the beach, but is seen emerging from the adjoining coast. Eventually, Starck envisions that 3-D printing will expand the concept even further. Starck called Tog “a philosophy, a political idea” because it brings mass production to design, which will bring down prices.

“It’s a high-tech miracle,” Starck said. “You have a guy somewhere who will make a beautiful object, just for you.”

The Pucci fashion house has teamed up with the Bisazza glass-mosaic makers to create splashy wall mosaics featuring archival Pucci patterns. The collaboration was born

out of friendship between Laudomia Pucci and Rossella Bisazza, women who have taken over the historic Ital-ian brands founded by their fathers.

While Bisazza has collaborated with designers before, this is its first with a fashion house. “The idea is to transfer the print from garments to interiors,” Bisazza said in the brand’s Milan store. “It is a way to decorate the house.”

Three of the creations are envi-sioned as wall hangings, pieces of art in limited editions of 99. Each

bold, geometric mosaic is made from hand-cut stones and takes six mosaic makers 200 hours to assemble. The collection also includes three more-industrialized products that can be installed directly on interior walls. “It has been a great collaboration, also very easy, very quick,” Bisazza said. “It is not always that way.”

Fashion designers are increasingly expanding into home and furniture lines to complete their brands. Prada presented its CloverLeaf Sofa, a sectional that in its full, circular

configuration creates intimate space for conversation with front-and-back seating. In its entirety, the sofa, which comes in velvety red, gold and green, commands a large space but can be broken down into elegant S-shaped seating, as Prada did in its via Mon-tenapoleane womenswear store.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

targeting young people in Tabanan region had been going on since last year. As revealed by Customer Relations Manager of the Ta-banan Municipal Waterworks, IB Marjaya Wirata, the lack of clean water discharge often oc-currs at peak hours namely in the morning and evening. As a result, the simultaneous use sometimes results in complaint about the decreasing volume of water. Though he acknowledged that the need for clean water keeps increasing, his party guaranteed that the Municipality Waterworks would never intentionally shut off the water. In other words, if there was a complaint at that water that did not flow, probably it happened due to repair works or leaking pipes.

“We constantly advise cus-tomers to set up a water reser-voir, so that at peak hours or if out of service, customers do not lack clean water,” he advised.

Meanwhile, until March 2014, the Tabanan Municipal-ity Waterworks had a total of 49,853 house connections. “On average, our new connection each month reaches 100 house connections,” he explained.

Admittedly, the future chal-lenge faced by the Tabanan Municipality Waterworks to meet the water needs would be very difficult. It happened due to the proliferation of housing complexes that were definitely in need of clean water connec-tion. “To meet the needs for water, we rely on 31 springs including the surface water,” he explained.

Gembrong springs at Soka hamlet in Penebel subdistrict was the largest water source having considerable capacity with a production of 88.929 liters per second.

Furthermore, he said the Mu-nicipality Waterworks constant-ly increased the networks ability to increase the piping system. Additions to the piping network was intended to improve servic-es for customers. “Improvement of the network system covers the repair and installation of pipe of 216 mm along 3 km was planned to be undertaken in the area of Kukuh, Marga, whose source comes from the Dedari River,” he said.

“Our priority is to realize the toll road construction plan that connects Kuta (Badung) to Soka (Tabanan). This plans has been included in the assessment phase,” said Deputy Minister of Public Works, Achmad Hermanto Dardak, amidst the meeting of the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC) in Nusa Dua.

He said that Ministry of Public Works was currently awaiting the results of the study to be followed up in the next process. If the review had been completed, then his party would plan the next development, including land acquisition that would be used by the toll road.

“It must be first made from Kuta-Soka, while road section from Soka to Gilimanuk will be repaired geometrically such as reducing climbs, sharp turns and widening road in order to facilitate vehicles to overtake,” he explained.

He said the toll road construction should have synergy with central and local government and other agencies. To build highway was required a considerable cost. However, the government continued to make improvement to transna-tional traffic flows such as from Gilimanuk (Jembrana) to Padangbai (Karangasem).

“Along those lines, it should be made shortcut and road

widening, so the original condition can be reduced by at least to ten percent,” he said.

The companies said Wednesday the comedy will be written by Jenny Bicks (“What a Girl Wants”) and produced by husband and wife team Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (“Men in Black 3”).

Execut ive producers wi l l be Parkes+MacDonald president Marc Resteghini and Julia Pistor for Mattel’s Playground Productions.

Sony sees the film as a global fran-chise and plans to go into production by the end of the year.

It’s the second collaboration for Sony and Mattel. The companies are currently developing the film adaptation of “Mas-ters of the Universe,” based on Mattel action figures.
