But “Avengers: Age of Ultron” failed to top the all-time record of the first film’s $207.4 million debut in 2012.

Although “Ultron” was the only new film in wide release this week-end, it had some significant small screen competition: The Kentucky Derby, the NBA playoffs, and the Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao fight.

Numbers could shift by the time Monday actuals roll in, but it seems the robust counter-programming may have blockaded another record for Marvel and Disney.

Still, for Disney’s head of dis-tribution Dave Hollis, the weekend was a “spectacular result” for the film, which cost a reported $250 million to produce.

Playing on 4,276 screens, the audiences for “Ultron’s” debut were 59 percent male and 41 percent under the age of 25.

“We’re in rare air here,” said Hollis. “Having the second biggest opening weekend in the history of

the movie business is always going to be something you walk away overwhelmingly happy with. The momentum of the brand for Marvel at this point is really something to take a step back and admire.”

Marvel and Disney now boast the top three opening weekends of all time with “Avengers” and its sequel taking the top two slots and “Iron Man 3” in third place.

Hollis said this is “confirma-tion” that these films are “bring-ing a completely different kind of filmmaking to cinema. They’re creating events and characters and building worlds in a way that is drawing the attention of huge crowds.”

Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian agreed that the failure to top the first film is “in no way” a disappointment.

“You have to put this into per-spective. Considering the level of competition this weekend in the sporting world, it shows that movie going holds its own against all other

options,” he said. Also, while the first film’s $207.4

million haul might just seem like a new benchmark to hit, Dergara-bedian was quick to point out that opening above $200 million was “literally like breaking the box of-fice sound barrier.”

Instead of a new industry stan-dard, a $200 million opening might continue to be an industry rarity.

“Ultron’s” future success is not in doubt either.

“These other options were single events. ‘Avengers’ has a very long playing time. This is a journey to $1 billion and beyond,” he said.

With $168 million in internation-al sales this weekend, “Avengers: Age of Ultron” has grossed $627 million globally in just 12 days. The film has yet to open in China and Japan.

The rest of the top five was populated with holdovers, “The Age of Adaline,” ‘’Furious 7,” ‘’Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” and the animated “Home.” (ap)

NEW YORK — It was Eric Clapton’s birthday celebration, but it was the sold-out crowd at Madi-son Square Garden that got a gift as the guitar god enthralled during a two-hour concert that included some of his biggest hits and guest stars including John Mayer.

There was no cake or “Happy Birthday” serenade; in fact, Clapton started Friday’s concert in typical matter-of-fact fashion, with a brief salutation to the crowd before delving into a rollicking version of “Somebody’s Knocking” from J.J. Cale. Still, the first in Clap-ton’s two-night stand to mark his 70th (which actually happened March 30) was special, if only for Clapton’s legendary guitar play, scorching through songs like “Hoochie Coochie” and “Queen of Spades,” while measured but still stirring during songs like his acoustic “Tears in Heaven,” which he switched up with a reggae ar-rangement more uptempo than the

original version.A special moment came when

Clapton’s keyboardist Paul Carrack performed a version of “You Are So Beautiful,” popularized by Joe Cocker, a longtime Clapton friend who died in December. Clapton also dedicated a song to beloved mentor B.B.King, who earlier Friday announced that he is in hospice care in Las Vegas.

For his birthday bash, Clapton brought out a few of his guitar-playing friends: Mayer traded frenetic guitar licks with his idol on “Pretending,” while he and Jimmy Vaughan were masterful together on the electric “Before You Ac-cuse Me.” Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall also delivered as they joined him on “Let It Rain.”

Clapton said little to the crowd, but toward the end he let on that the night was just as magical to him as it was to the audience. “I want to thank you for helping me celebrate,” he said. “This is the best birthday I ever had.” (ap)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

JAKArTA – Archipelago In-ternational, Indonesia’s fastest growing hotel group, has recently celebrated the grand opening of its 100th hotel in Indonesia - the new Aston Anyer Beach Hotel. In sup-porting Earth Day on April 22nd, Aston Anyer has donated 30 trees through Perum Perhutani to be planted at Anyer’s local conserva-tion area. The trees were named after the media who attended Grand Opening event.

Anyer is a small town situated on the edge of the Sunda Strait, Cilegon – Banten Indonesia. It has become one of the most popular destinations for both business and pleasure among Jakarta and

West Java’s residents thanks to its convenient location 50km from the port of Merak and within close proximity to Cilegon – a major coastal industrial city famous for its thriving factories and trading opportunities.

Aston Anyer Beach Hotel is located in the heart of Anyer only 90 minutes from Indonesia’s capital city, offering the perfect mix of convenience and coastal beauty. Set on Jalan Raya Karang Bolong, the 4-star hotel features 101 guest rooms and suites stylishly designed in the contemporary Aston way.

For business travelers, the hotel presents high-end MICE facilities including a modern conference

center with three auxiliary meeting rooms purposefully built on the top floor to soak up the beautiful ocean views. Complete with an outdoor terrace, this breezy area is perfect for refreshing coffee breaks or dra-matic sunset cocktail receptions.

The three meeting rooms range in size, from the smallest room that can accommodate up to 85 people, through to the largest room than can hold up to 400 guests. Each of the meeting rooms also include their own partitions, which means they can be divided into three smaller rooms for more intimate meetings, or opened up for larger MICE events and other social gatherings. Enable your business with our

fast internet broadband available throughout the hotel area with the speeds up to 100Mpbs.

The hotel also features a cozy all-day dining restaurant for ca-sual meetings or a relaxed meal, together with recreational facilities for downtime including an outdoor swimming pool, a private beach, a pool table and ping pong table, a bonfire pit and a full service spa. Featuring under water sound system, leisure seeker will now able to enjoy the music while self-pampering in the pool area.

The hotel is set to become a prime choice for business travelers to the area when considering the nearby industrial and commercial land in Cilegon. Among the facto-ries in Cilegon are Krakatau Steel Company, a vital producer of steel

for domestic and foreign needs, and Asahimas Chemical Company. Un-surprisingly, Cilegon has garnered the nickname “Steel City” since it is the largest steel producer in Southeast Asia, producing around 6 million tons of steel each year and drawing in a large business market.

“Aston Anyer aims to become the area’s best in class hotel, as it affords a number of facilities and amenities that aren’t typically found in this area. The hotel will cater to both leisure and business travelers, since many families escape the big city to the Anyer coastline for the weekend, whilst business guests often schedule mid-week conferences. Aston Anyer has already established itself on the radar of business travelers flocking to the bustling industrial city of Cilegon, and we are delighted to be offering Aston Anyer Beach Hotel as a MICE destination to cater to this market.” Said Ms. Tenaiya Brookfield – VP of Sales & Marketing of Archi-pelago International.

Based on details from the report of the victim, police arrested the debit card robbers: a 36 year old with the initials I .N.from NTT and 38 year old M.D.S. from Medan, on Wednesday (Apr. 29).

“Their modus operandi was a standard practice of pounding on the door of the ATM booth while the victim is withdrawing money. They pretend to want to withdraw money in a hurry, whereas on fact the tactic

is meant to make the victim quickly leave the booth and forget to take their card (debit card—Ed)” said the Chief of Kuta Police, Ida Bagus Dedy Januartha, accompanied by the Chief of Kuta Police Criminal Investiga-tion Unit, Dewa Tagel, on Sunday (May 3).

Januartha added that at that time, the victim who was staying at Hotel Bali Legian, Kuta, was on his way home from clubbing on Sunday (Aril

27) and was drunk. The victim stopped to withdrew money from Common-wealth Bank ATM booth on Jalan Poppies 2, Kuta. The two hoodlums, managed to scare the victim out of the ATM booth before he could re-trieve his card from the machine.. A few minutes later, the victim realized that he had left his card in the ATM machine and immediately returned to the scene to retrieve it. Unfortunately, the card was gone, so he reported it to the Kuta Police station.

The Chief of the Mobile Detective Unit, Ngurah Eka, and his personnel conducted an investigation based on the report made by the victim which stated that his card had been used to

in a shoe store on Jalan Dewi Sri, Kuta. Police immediately checked the victim’s card transactions and asked for a print out. The shoe store assistant confirmed that there had been one transaction made, so the officers checked the CCTV footage and ob-tained photos of the perpetrators, one of whom was suspect I.N.

Using the same methods, the police were able to track down a transaction that took place at Lippo Plaza, Kuta. The shop recorded three transactions and described the same characteristics of I.N. “We are also managed to get a description of the motorcycle used after the purchase made at the shoo store. This motorcycle was seen pass-

ing in front of Jesper Store on Jalan Raya Kuta,” said Dewa Tagel.

This time both suspects entered the store and when they came out they were immediately arrested. Both suspects argued that the debit card was found on Jalan Dewi Sartika, Kuta. “Initially, Jesper store was sued to see if the card worked and when it did, I.N notified M.D.S,” he said.

They used the card to buy shoes, sandals, a Samsung Galaxy J1 and Samsung Galaxy A3 cell phone, and four cell phone cases. “The victims losses are estimated to be about 10 million rupiah. The suspects have been arrested, we just need to complete the file,” he said. (kmb36)

DENPASAr - One afternoon in a corner of Lumintang Urban Park, a group of teenagers are absorbed in playing with a collection of their favorite reptiles. Without feeling disgusted at all, one of them wraps a ball python around his hand and then kisses the head of the slithering reptile affectionately. Another is also proud to showcase the elegance of his iguana, which sits perched on his shoulder as he walks around the area of the jogging track that is always crowded with townspeople. Mean-while his friends are preoccupied, mingling with a bearded dragon, multi coloured leopard geckos, a blue-tongued skink, monitor lizards, a chameleon and various other ex-otic reptiles.

The names of the exotic reptile are indeed unfamiliar to the gen-eral public because most of the pet animals are imported. However, recently some of these exotic rep-tiles have been successfully bred by reptile lovers that learned how to breed them locally. Some of the reptile lovers who formerly raised a reptile just as a hobby have now ‘increased’ their status by becoming breeders and starting quite lucrative exotic reptile businesses.

“Initially, we just raised the rep-tiles because we were interested in the color of their varied, unique and beautiful faces. Apparently, some of the reptile collections became quite vast, so they became seri-

ously interested in breeding,” said Doddy Samboja, one of the reptile collectors.

Doddy Samboja said he raises various species of reptiles at home including a ball python, a corn snake, iguanas, bearded dragona, leopard geckoa, various types of turtles and chameleona. Doddy says he has focused on breeding leopard geckos because they are easy to handle, have a high success rate

in terms of breeding, are relatively affordable to maintain and most importantly because the demand for them is booming so they are not difficult to market.

“At home, I am breeding approxi-mately 20 pairs of leopard gecko with a variety of colors and patterns -among hobbyists this is commonly known as morph. Then, I sell the re-sults of the breeding. The marketing is not complicated, it is done online,”

he said while adding that a three-month-old leopard gecko can be sold at varying prices, ranging from IDR 150,000 to more than IDR 1 million depending on the uniqueness of its pattern and colors.

According to Doddy Samboja, raising reptiles has become a new lifestyle for some residents in major cities in Indonesia, including in Den-pasar. Raising reptile is now viewed as being as common as having a pet

dog or cat and is no longer consid-ered a strange and nasty hobby.

As an indicator, currently there are many emerging reptile lover clubs that regularly hold exhibitions and contests as a means of promoting themselves to the public. Even the Municipality of Denpasar has responded favourably to such hobbyists by giving them the op-portunity to participate in exhibitions at official events held by the municipal government.

“The support of the local govern-ment is contributing to the flour-ishing of the interest of urbanites, especially teenagers to own reptiles. Just like raising dogs and cats, raising reptiles has now become a way of life for city dwellers. The emergence of reptile lover clubs indicates that the hobby of raising reptiles has begun to be accepted as a hobby like any other, by the com-munity,” he said.

Nevertheless, Doddy Samboja always reminds people that reptile lovers should not choose their pets haphazardly. Reptile pets should not be endangered animals, but only be freely commercialized reptiles. He also warns reptile lovers not to catch reptiles in the wild, because this could disrupt the wild popula-tion. “Simply put: buy the reptiles that have been bred and do not buy the animals that have been caught from the wild. Nowadays, it is not difficult to find various kinds of bred reptiles,” he suggested. (ian)

Another foreigner’s debit card stolen in Kuta

DENPASAr - Foreign citizens are still having their debit or ATM card stolen in Kuta, despite many perpetrators having al-ready been arrested. For example, 23 year old Kurt Cockburn, from Australia, had his debit card stolen while withdrawing money from an ATM on Jalan Popies 2, Kuta.

It won’t quite be as bad in North America, where only 1 in 20 spe-cies will be killed off because of climate change or Europe where the extinction rate is nearly as small. But in South America, that forecasted heat-caused extinction rate soars to 23 percent, the worst for any continent, according to a new study published Thursday in the journal Science.

University of Connecticut ecolo-gist Mark Urban compiled and analyzed 131 peer-reviewed studies on species that used various types of computer simulations and found a general average extinction rate

for the globe: 7.9 percent. That’s an average for all species, all regions, taking into consideration various assumptions about future emission trends of man-made greenhouse gases. The extinction rate calcula-tion doesn’t mean all of those spe-cies will be gone; some will just be on an irreversible decline, dwin-dling toward oblivion, he said.

“It’s a sobering result,” Urban said.

Urban’s figures are probably underestimating the real rate of species loss a little, said scientists not affiliated with the research. That’s because Urban only looks

at temperature, not other factors like fire or interaction with other animals, and more studies have been done in North America and Europe, where rates are lower, said outside biologists Stuart Pimm of Duke University and Terry Root of Stanford University.

The projected extinction rate changes with time and how much warming there is from the burning of coal, oil and gas. At the moment, the extinction rate is relatively low, 2.8 percent, but it rises with more carbon dioxide pollution and warm-er temperatures, Urban wrote.

By the end of the century, in a worst case scenario if world carbon emission trends continue to rise, 1 in 6 species will be gone or on the road to extinction, Urban said.

That’s higher than the overall rate because that 7.9 percent rate takes into account some projections that the world will reduce or at least slow carbon dioxide emissions.

What happens is that species tend to move closer to the poles and up in elevation as it gets warmer, Urban said. But some species, es-pecially those on mountains such as the American pika, run out of room to move and may die off because there’s no place to escape the heat, Urban said. It’s like being on an ever-shrinking island.

Still, Pimm and Urban said the extinction from warming climates is dwarfed by a much higher ex-tinction rate also caused by man: Habitat loss. A large extinction is going on, and for every species dis-

appearing for natural causes, 1,000 are vanishing because of unnatural man-made causes, Pimm said.

“I don’t know we’re at the point where we can call it a mass extinc-tion event, but we’re certainly heading that way unless we change direction,” Urban said.

A separate study in the same journal looked at 23 million years of marine fossils to determine which water animals have the biggest extinction risk and where. Marine mammals, such as whales, dolphins and seals, have the highest risk. The Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, western Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean between Australia and Japan are hotspots for potential extinction, especially those caused by human factors, the study said. MIAMI - Flying people to deep space -- like Mars or an asteroid -- is high on NASA’s wish list, but research on mice suggested Friday that extended radiation exposure permanently harms the brain.

Central nervous system damage and cognitive impairments were observed in lab animals that were exposed to highly energetic charged particles -- similar to the galactic cosmic rays that astronauts would encounter during long space flights -- said researchers at the University of California, Irvine.

“This is not positive news for astronauts deployed on a two- to three-year round trip to Mars,” said lead author Charles Limoli, profes-sor of radiation oncology in UCI’s School of Medicine.

“Performance decrements, mem-ory deficits, and loss of awareness and focus during spaceflight may affect mission-critical activities, and exposure to these particles may have long-term adverse consequences to cognition throughout life.”

Currently, the world’s astronauts rotate in shifts that last about six

months at the International Space Station.

In March, US astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko began the first year-long mission at the orbiting research outpost to test the impact of longer spaceflights on the body and mind.

NASA is aiming to send people to Mars in the 2030s, but skeptics say the technology is nowhere near ready, nor is it clear that such travel would be safe for people to undertake.

The latest research in the journal Science Advances subjected lab rodents to charged particle irra-diation for six weeks at the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory at the Brookhaven National Laboratory.

This fully ionized oxygen and tita-nium led to brain inflammation, which disrupted the transmission of signals among neurons, said the study.

The radiation impaired the brain’s communication network, interfering with the nerve cells’ ability to transmit signals. “Like a bullet, charged particles hit den-

dritic branches and caused them to break off,” said the study.

“It’s well known that losing these dendritic branches is linked to cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s and other diseases.”

Tests on learning and memory also showed that irradiated mice did poorly and were prone to confusion, compared to normal mice.

Similar mental problems could take months to develop in humans, but any mission to Mars would likely take at least a year and a half, and possibly longer. (afp)

Global warming to push 1 in 13 species to extinction

WASHINGTON — Global warming will eventually push 1 out of every 13 species on Earth into extinction, a new study projects.

The potential to develop this village into a nature tourism site looks promising, thought the safety of visitors still needs to be considered.

According to the Head of the Buleleng Culture and Tourism Agency, Gede Suyasa, the project would require the cooperation of the residents of Sudaji village and field studies still need to be conducted to assess the feasibility of creating a swimming pond and trekking path.

Considering the fact that other nature tourism sites in Buleleng have seen tourists become se-verely injured, safety is at the top of the list of things to ad-dress. “We have to see whether the village is suitable as a tourist destination, particularly in terms of safety given that there have been some fatalities in Buleleng

recently. These incidents should serve as a reference for future projects,” said Suyasa on Sunday (May. 3).

The beautiful natural sur-roundings of Sudaji village have yet to live up to their potential as a tourist destination simply for lack of attention. Suyasa added that coordination with the Gov-ernment of Bali Tourism Office will be made regarding the vari-ous proposals for water tourism destinations, that different com-munities have drafted. “Sudaji village has naturally beautiful features enhanced by the forest and plantations there. If Sudaji is to be designated as a tourist destination by the provincial gov-ernment, we will be consulting with all related parties to come up with the best way to proceed,” he added. (kmb34)

TABANAN - On the day after Saraswati Day, Hindus in Bali most often celebrate Banyu Pinaruh Day by performing the self-purificatory rite or melukat in the ocean. In the coastal area of Yeh Gangga, Ta-banan, the Banyu Pinaruh ritual on Sunday (May 3) happened a little differently.

The Baruna Astawa ritual was attended by approximately 2,500 junior high school and high school

students, and other members of the community, not only from the sub-district of Tabanan, but also from Kediri and Kerambitan.

The self-purificatory rite was led by five high priests, namely; Ida Pandita Rsi Siwa Putra Sana-tana Daksha Manuaba from Griya Utu Penebel, Ida Pandita Daksha Sudanta Putra from Griya Carik Padang Kediri, Ida Pandita Trinata Daksha Manuaba from Griya Ku-

kuh Kerambitan, Ida Pandita Sadu Eka Jaya from Griya Gadungan, East Selemadeg, and Ida Pandita Sri Begawan Dwija Dwipayana from Griya Sakenan.

The ritual initiated by the Daksha Dharma Sadhu Kinship (PDDS) of Tabanan was also attended by the Head of the Tabanan Education Agency, I Putu Santika, the Head of the Tabanan Community Em-powerment and Rural Administra-tion (BPMPD), IGN Supanji, and a number of other public figures. Even Deputy Regent of Tabanan, I Komang Gede Sanjaya, attended the ritual.

After performing the ritual and worship together, Deputy Regent Sanjaya expressed his appreciation for the activities that were initiated by the PDDS of Tabanan County. He said that it is the first such ritual held in Tabanan. “Although the PDDS Tabanan was only established a month ago, they have managed to come up with this breakthrough concept, intended to purify the mind and heart,” he said.

Appreciation for the eagerness of the participants, mostly consist-ing of junior high and high school students was also expressed, for their willingness to follow this early morning ritual. Their presence,

according to the Deputy Regent Sanjaya, was a relief to the concerns of many parents who fear that the moral degradation of the younger generation caused by the negative influences of globalization had already taken hold “This group ac-tivity shows concerned parents that all is not lost. I was very touched and hope that we as parents will continue to provide guidance to the next generation,” he added.

He also said that the ritual held by the PDDS, is a good opportu-nity to purify the heart and mind, especially given that it took place the day after knowledge came down to us, a day better known as Saraswati Day.

“Saraswati Day is followed by the holy day of Banyu Pinaruh, which is a rare opportunity because it coincides with the full moon. On Monday (May 4) we have the holy day known as Soma Ribek, which is a chance for us to fill ourselves with various kinds of knowledge. Then, Pagerwesi on Wednesday (May 6) which is an opportunity for us to fortify ourselves,” he said.

Sanjaya slow expressed his hope that the mass self-purificatory rite will take place in all the other sub-distircts. To that end, he has asked the Education Agency to work

towards inviting all junior high and high school students in Tabanan to celebrate Banyu Pinaruh with activities such as those held by the PDDS. “We do hope the younger generation of Tabanan, can gain a better understanding of the meaning of Banyu Pinaruh day and all that it implies,” he concluded. North Korea had never con-firmed Kim would go. After Mos-cow announced last week that Kim had declined the invitation, North Korea said through its state-run media on Monday that Kim Yong Nam, the head of the presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, would attend. Kim Yong Nam is a senior statesman who often repre-sents the country at international or diplomatic events.

The brief North Korean an-nouncement made no mention of an invitation to leader Kim. But Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told The Associated Press that “internal matters” were preventing him from leaving North Korea.

The idea that leader Kim, who assumed power after the death of his father in 2011, might choose

Moscow for his first trip abroad seemed plausible because North Korea — increasingly wary of China’s economic and political in-fluence — has been actively pursu-ing better relations with Russia.

The two countries have in-creased official exchanges and stepped up talks to bolster trade. The Russian president, unhappy with pressure from the West over Ukraine, has also shown more inter-est in developing ties as part of what some analysts have dubbed “Putin’s pivot” to Asia.

But foreign observers have sug-gested North Korea did not see the Moscow event as right for Kim’s debut because he would be sharing the stage with other leaders. Some analysts have also suggested North Korea may believe China remains the most appropriate place for Kim

to travel to first. Had he gone, Kim might have seen some very familiar sights.

The highlight of Victory Day will be a military parade on Red Square overseen by Putin. North Korea also has a penchant for simi-lar shows on Kim Il Sung Square in the center of Pyongyang.

Kim would also not have had to deal with the awkwardness of being on the same stage with President Barack Obama, who is among many Western leaders who have snubbed the invitation because of Russia’s role in the Ukraine conflict. Others have decided to visit Moscow to pay their respects to Russia for its role in World War II, but will not attend the military parade. North Korea is expected to hold its own elaborate anniversary celebrations in October. (ap)

DOHA, Qatar — French Presi-dent Francois Hollande, seeking to strengthen political and business ties with the energy-rich Gulf states, arrived in Qatar on Monday at the start of a two-nation trip that will include a visit to neighboring Saudi Arabia.

The trip comes as France and other world powers work to finalize a lasting nuclear deal with Iran by the end of June. Saudi Arabia and its Arab Gulf allies fear a deal and the sanctions relief it would bring could further embolden Iran, their regional rival.

The centerpiece of Hollande’s visit to Qatar is the signing of a 6.3 billion euro ($7 billion) deal to sell 24 Rafale fighter jets to the natural gas-rich nation. The agreement, announced Thursday, makes Qatar the third overseas buyer of the delta-winged Rafale, manufactured by France’s Dassault Aviation.

He was expected to hold talks with Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani during his visit before departing later in the day for Saudi Arabia.

France and Qatar have deep economic ties. French energy giant Total SA is a major player in the OPEC member’s energy industry, with interests in oil and liquefied natural gas projects.

Underscoring the importance of the energy sector, Total CEO Patrick Pouyanne met separately with both

the emir and the Qatari prime min-ister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al-Thani, on Monday. His talks with the emir focused on areas of joint cooperation and “prospects for enhancing them,” according to the official Qatar News Agency.

Qatari state-linked investors, meanwhile, have taken a keen interest in France, pumping cash into luxury group LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton and foot-ball team Paris Saint-Germain. The country’s state-backed Qatar Airways is a large buyer of jetliners made by French-based Airbus, with 180 of its planes on order.

The Rafale sale could add mo-mentum to France’s efforts to export the fighter. India announced plans to buy 36 Rafale jets earlier this month and Egypt bought 24 in February. The United Arab Emirates, which along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar is a member of the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, is also consid-ering buying the plane.

Hollande’s visit to Qatar comes just days after a French prosecutor opened a preliminary investiga-tion into allegations that French construction company Vinci seri-ously mistreated migrant workers in Qatar as the country prepares to host the 2022 World Cup. Vinci denies the allegations. Its Qatar subsidiary QDVC has contracts worth 2.2 billion euros ($2.4 bil-lion) in Qatar. (ap)

ATHENS, Greece — Police in southern Greece say 26 wild horses have been shot and killed on a re-mote mountainside, but the motive for the attack remains unclear.

The dead horses were first dis-covered Thursday on rugged slopes of the 2,376-meter (7,795-foot) Mount Cyllene, 140 kilometers (85 miles) southwest of Athens.

Police major Constantine Vra-galis of the southern Peloponnese Police directorate told the Asso-ciated Press on Monday that 23 horses were found dead and three other horses that were injured also later died. Police said the horses were privately owned but were allowed to roam wild in the region. (ap)

North Korea officially squelches speculation of Kim trip

PYONGYANG, North Korea — North Korea announced Monday that the head of its parlia-ment will attend this month’s Victory Day celebration in Moscow, squelching speculation that supreme leader Kim Jong Un would use the event to make his international debut. Moscow said in March that Kim was among dozens of world leaders invited to the May 9 celebrations, which mark the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Deputy Director of the Tabanan Hospital Supporting Facilities, I Gusti Ayu Sri Kastariani, explained that initially the Tabanan Hospital was able to process the solid medi-

cal waste of third parties such as private hospitals or clinics that do not have an incinerator. However, now, the Tabanan Hospital is only able to process its own solid medi-

cal waste so they are no longer ac-cepting waste from third parties.

Kastariani added the Tabanan Hospital generates 190 kg of solid everyday that includes syringes, infusion tubes, medicine bottles, various body parts and other solid medical waste the is extremely haz-ardous to and cannot be discharged directly into the environment. Their incinerator, which they have owned since 2010 can only burn 100 kg per incineration, “so, in order to burn each day’s waste, the Tabanan Hos-pital, ‘s incineration is done twice a

day,” said Kastariani.Restricted human resources and

the constraints of the incinerator, mean that the hospital can only activate the incinerator twice a day. “The temperature reaches 1,000 degrees, so the incinerator must cool down in between sessions,” said Kastariani.

The incinerator can in fact be used more than twice day, however a lack of manpower poses an obsta-cle to more burning, so combustion only occurs twice a day.

To keep the smoke from the

incinerated waste safe for the envi-ronment, the Tabana Hospital con-ducts quality standard tests twice a year. According to Kastariani, the remians of the combusted materials are disposed in landfill. She admit-ted that they are currently discuss-ing the possibility of converting the ashes of the medical waste into dish washing ash, with a third party who is looking into this option “but so far, we have not cooperated to that extent. For the time being, the re-sults of the combustion are dumped into landfill,” she said. (kmb24)

DENPASAR - The trial with the agenda of the verdict on the case of the allegation of drug factory provision was originally sentenced last week. However, since the judges were not ready for reading the verdict and the reasons of being busy preparing the turnover of the Chief of the Denpasar District Court, so that the trial with the agenda of read-

ing the verdict was postponed. A number of defendants included in the indictment of the drug factory will be eventually sentenced this week. “Yes, the trial was canceled yesterday. The reading of verdict is scheduled this week,” said one of the lawyers of the defendants, Ahmad Hadiana, on Monday.

As has been known, those get-ting involved in the allegation

of drug factory case are Nyo-man Sudarmawan, Wayan Artawa alias Tawok, Gusti Ngurah Surya Wibawa and Donnysius Selve Raj. Especially for the defendant Donny alias Dion, the panel of judges led by Hasoloan Sianturi has read the verdict. In the trial in the Denpasar District Court, the judge declared that the defendant was proven legally and convincingly

to have committed narcotic crime. Dion was then sentenced to prison for nine years and ten months. In addition, the defendant was also sentenced to pay a fine of IDR 1 billion with the condition that if it is not paid, it will be replaced with imprisonment for three months.

In this case, the defendant was charged under the Article 132 paragraph (1) in conjunction with

the Article 129 paragraph (a) of Law No. 35/2009 on narcotics. As the verdict, the judge stated that the defendant is guilty of at-tempting or making evil agreement to commit the crime of narcotic drugs and narcotic precursors. The defendant is also proven to possess, store or provide drug precursors for the manufacture of narcotics. (kmb37)

GIANYAR - The rain flushing the north-ern part of Gianyar such as Tegallalang sub-district caused the land condition unstable. Landslides and collapsed road disrupted traffic at local road section. The landslides occurred at the road section of Kedewatan-Ubud-Keliki, Tegallalang, while at Tagtag hamlet, Taro village, Tegallalang, the road access to Bukian, Payangan, collapsed and almost disconnected.

The landslides occurred on the road sec-tion of Kedewatan-Keliki around 05:30 a.m on Sunday. Such quite heavy rain made the condition of land unstable at the location. As a result, the revetment of Shanti Parana Villa avalanched along approximately 12 meters as it was not strong enough to hold water pressure.

Revetment with the height reaching 10 meters avalanched and buried the road body. No casualties were reported in the incident. As a result of the incident, vehicles could not pass so that congestion was inevitable. The officers of the Gianyar Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), personnel of the Tegalla-lang Military Regional Command and police along with the surrounding communities at-tempted to evacuate so that the traffic could run normally.

Division Head II of the BPBD Gianyar, Gede Eka Putra, with permission of the Head of the BPBD Gianyar Anak Agung Oka said that the evacuation of a number of avalanche materials was performed simultaneously and eventually could open up the road access at 10:45 a.m. and cars were able to pass smoothly. As for the remaining avalanche materials in the form of rocks were evacu-ated or transported on the following day by using heavy equipment from the Public Works Agency. (kmb16)

190 kg solid medical waste produced daily Hospital’ incinerator overloaded

TABANAN - Every day the Tabanan Hospital produces 190 kg of solid medical waste. Before being disposed, the waste must be processed through high temperature combustion in the incinerator so that it will not harm the environment. The capacity of the hospital’s incinerator is just 100 kg, so that in order to be able to cope with the excess waste, the Tabanan Hospital is being forced to discontinue their cooperation with third parties wanting to use the incinerator.

On the pilgrimage of Dan-ghyang Nirartha or Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rauh from Java to Bali, he should show off his supernatural power against the king ruling the Tanjung Ketapang, Perancak with the title I Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa. According to Jro Mangku Nyo-man Sadra, 72, the temple with anniversary falling every Buda Manis (Wednesday) Medangsia was inseparable from the pil-grimage of Danghyang Nirartha to Bali.

Before he came to Jembrana, Perancak or Tanjung Ketapang was already in command by I Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa. When Nirartha arrived at Perancak through the estuary of Perancak directly overlooking the south-ern sea, the ruler of Perancak,

Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa exam-ined the capability of Danghyang Nirartha.

As a new comer, he was asked to comply with the local rules. One of which, he had to worship him manifested through four large stone shrines that existed at the area. At that time, Ngurah Rangsasa asked to struggle while showing off supernatural power and it was met by Danghyang Nirartha.

However, before accomplish-ing the worship, the stone shrines in use shattered. Ultimately, Ngu-rah Rangsasa recognized the supernatural power of Nirartha and the imperious character of the Perancak ruler vanished. Later on, Ngurah Rangsasa moved to the north under the hill.

Due to his presence there, local people then named the area Sawe Rangsasa.

According to local legend, the word sawe originating from the word sawa or soul refers to Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa, the former ruler of Perancak. So far, within the area of Perancak Temple stands a memorial chamber shrine used to venerate the descendants of Ngurah Rangsasa. Additionally, at the temple entrance of Perancak is set a pair of crocodile statue on the stairs.

According to Jro Mangku Sadra who has been in service for 40 years, the statue described the situation of Perancak estuary at that time where the swamp area was still filled with dozens of crocodiles. (kmb)

When traveling in Bali, you do not need to be confused to get a meal or just a snack. The com-munity of Bali Island is rich in culinary tradition, including vari-ous fresh cakes. Even, the cakes produced are eco-friendly because the ingredients and coloring agent in use are obtained from organic plants.

One of them is the lukis cake. This traditional cake tastes sweet, sticky and chewy. It resembles to small triangle in greenish color. When being served, it presented with grated

coconut and brown sugar. It will be going more appropriate if enjoyed with coffee or tea.

This kind of cake is not easy to get. Aside from being difficult to find its ingredients, the making is also quite complicated.

However, the food stalls at vil-lages, traditional markets, pastry shops and some supermarkets are selling it. Uniquely, in the cake shop and supermarket this lukis cake has been packaged neatly, unlike in the stalls as it is present-ed manually to make it look really fresh. The lukis cake makes use of

ingredients like sticky rice. By and large, it is then mixed

with black sticky rice that has an interesting texture. The other ingredients comprise the grated coconut, salt and Balinese palm sugar (brown sugar). To make it, the black sticky rice is soaked for some 15 minutes. Furthermore, it is drained and filled with salt so that it will not be tasteless.

After that, take a spoon of the batter and wrap in green and clean banana leaf. Wrap it tightly, so the results will be sticky and not wa-tery. Boil them for approximately 2 hours (do as boiling rice bag). Further, take them out and drain. To make sure whether the sticky rice has been cooked or not, test it by piercing with a pin (palm leaf rib). If it has been hard, simply take them out and drain. Wait for a while until turning cooler and then serve them.

To serve them, unwrap the leaf first and place on the even serving leaf. Then, sprinkle them with shredded coconut containing salt. As the finishing step, sprinkle all the cakes with brown sugar. (kmb)

hOnG KOnG - Asian markets gained ground Monday after a long holiday weekend, energised by a strong finish on Wall Street last week and gloomy Chinese economic data that heightened expectations for more stimulus measures.

Seoul closed up 0.24 percent or 5.06 points to 2,132.23, led by technology and financial shares, while Hong Kong stocks were up 0.38 percent at mid-session.

Sydney rose 13.1 points, or 0.23 percent, to close at 5,827.5 as the Aussie dollar slipped on expecta-tions of another interest rate cut to combat a recent surge in the unit.

Chinese shares rallied on hopes of monetary easing following a survey of manufacturing activity that recorded its worst contraction

in a year in April. Shanghai added 0.87 percent to 4,480.46.

Tokyo was closed for a public holiday, along with financial mar-kets in Thailand and Malaysia.

As well as the news on China’s economic front, Asian bourses took their lead from a rally on US markets on Friday which reversed a bruising two-day retreat follow-ing a dismal US economic growth report.

HSBC’s final purchasing man-agers’ index (PMI) for China came in at 48.9 for April, below the break-even point of 50 and the weakest since 48.1 in the same month last year, indicating sub-dued domestic demand is hamper-ing the economy.

The British bank’s index tracks activity in China’s factories and

workshops and is regarded as a ba-rometer of the health of the Asian economic giant.

The outcome was down from a preliminary reading of 49.2 and marked the second monthly contraction in a row after March’s 49.6.

China’s government on Friday had posted its official PMI at 50.1 for last month, unchanged from March when the gauge showed growth for the first time this year.

On Australian markets, atten-tion was on a central bank meeting on Tuesday expected to address a rebound in the currency -- prob-lematic as the nation grapples with the decline of a mining boom.

“The recent surge in the Austra-lian dollar would be viewed quite

dimly by the folks at the Reserve Bank,” Bill Evans, chief economist at Westpac Banking Corp, told Bloomberg News.

Failing to cut rates “in the face of such strong market pricing will affect the bank’s credibility over time”, he added.

The dollar extended gains against the euro in Asia on Monday ahead of the release of a closely watched report on the US labour market, analysts said.

The euro bought $1.1194 in afternoon Singapore trade from $1.1200 in New York late Friday. It also fell to 134.40 yen from 134.56 yen.

The greenback was changing hands at 120.07 yen from 120.14 yen on Friday. The Australian dollar fell to 78.24 US cents from

78.90 US cents.“Another big week for the dol-

lar as markets await the US non-farm payrolls report this Friday,” Phillip Futures said in a market commentary.

“A strong labour market report will likely strengthen the dollar. Conversely, weak data is likely to push the dollar down.”

Singapore’s United Overseas Bank said the report on the US labour market could “swing mar-ket expectations for (the) Fed Reserve’s future course of interest rate actions”.

Oil prices fell in Asia as dealers eyed the lacklustre manufacturing data from China, which raised concerns about weak demand from the world’s top energy consumer. (afp)

neW YORK — McDonald’s is set to unveil its latest plans to revive its sputtering business on Mon-day. The plans are to be detailed just two months after CEO Steve Easterbrook stepped in to take charge of the world’s biggest hamburger chain.

McDonald’s is fighting intensifying competi-tion from a variety of players and has admitted that it failed to keep up with changing tastes. In its flagship U.S. market, executives said the menu got too complicated and gummed up operations. Customer visits at established locations declined for two straight years.

Already, McDonald’s has tried a number of moves to inject some life back into its brand.

Back in December, it said it would start trim-ming its menu to simplify operations and make room for new offerings. The nips and tucks in the past couple months targeted minor sandwich variations. More recently, the company revamped its grilled chicken recipe and said it would curb the use of antibiotics.

The company also said last month that it would

double its planned restaurant closures this year to roughly 700. It hasn’t yet revealed its updated plans on overall restaurant count growth. At the end of last year, McDonald’s Corp. had more than 36,200 locations around the world.

Easterbrook, who previ-ously headed up the U.K. business, says he wants to turn McDon-ald’s into a “modern, progres-s i v e burger c o m -pany.” (ap)

LONDON - A British grand-mother on death row in Indonesia is writing goodbye letters to her family and believes she could be executed at any time, she wrote in an article on Sunday. Lindsay San-diford, 58, said she was expecting to die shortly, after seven foreign drug convicts were executed last week, causing a storm of interna-tional protest.

“My execution is imminent and I know I might die at any time now. I could be taken tomorrow from my

cell,” Sandiford wrote in British newspaper the Mail on Sunday.

“I have started to write goodbye letters to members of my family.”

Sandiford, originally from Red-car in northeast England, wrote that she planned to sing the cheery popular song “Magic Moments” when facing the firing squad.

“I won’t wear a blindfold. It’s not because I’m brave but because I don’t want to hide -- I want them to look at me when they shoot me.”

She said her greatest sadness is

that she may never meet her two-year-old granddaughter, who was born after her arrest.

Sandiford was sentenced to death on the island of Bali in 2013 after she was convicted of trafficking drugs.

Customs officers found cocaine worth an estimated £1.6 million ($2.4 million, 2.2 million euros) hidden in a false bottom in San-diford’s suitcase when she arrived in Bali on a flight from Thailand in 2012.

Sandiford admitted the offences,

but says that she agreed to carry the drugs after a drug syndicate threat-ened to kill her son.

She described Andrew Chan, 31, one of two Australians killed by fir-ing squad on Wednesday for his role in a plan to smuggle heroin, as “one of the heroes of my life”.

The two had become close friends in prison, where Chan had spent a decade after being arrested as one of the so-called “Bali Nine” group of smugglers.

The execution of Chan, who

became a Christian pastor in prison, and another Australian Myuran Suku-maran, 34, cast a pall over relations between Australia and Indonesia.

Sandiford’s family have recently launched a fundraising drive to raise money to lodge an appeal at the Indonesian Supreme Court, after the British government refused to fund the legal fight.

If the challenge fails, Sandiford still has the option to appeal for clemency from Indonesian Presi-dent Joko Widodo. (afp)

SLEMAN - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has prom-ised to improve health services for the holders of Healthy Indonesia Cards (KIS).

“Some of the health services have not been good, and I am not going to turn a blind eye to it,” the president stated while distributing KIS, Welfare Indonesia Cards (KKS), and Smart Indonesia Cards (KIP) in Sleman district, Central Java, on Monday.

President Jokowi pointed out that there were still several hospitals whose doctors and nurses had failed to provide good and friendly services to the patients of KIS holders.

Therefore, he encouraged the people, who received poor services at the hospital, to report the matter to the government through the health minister.

“Patients with KIS who receive poor services from a hospital are expected to report it to the health minister, and if needed, report it directly to me,” President Jokowi af-firmed.

The head of state remarked that he will cancel the license of any hospitals refusing to treat the patients of KIS holders.

The KIS can be used by impoverished members of the community for availing hospital treatment to be borne by the government.

“Currently, not all hospitals, but only government-owned hospitals are accepting KIS. I will ensure that all will accept KIS,” Jokowi emphasized.

The president distributed KIS, KIP, and KKS to commu-nity leaders in the village of Temuwangi, regency of Klaten, Central Java.

He remarked that no ailing members of the community should be declined access to medical treatment.

The president, however, noted that the patients should first seek treatment at public health centers (Puskesmas), which will decide if they will need further treatments at hospitals.

“Patients suffering from minor diseases such as flu may not need to go to hospitals. They should be treated at Puskesmas,” he added. (ant)

The year-on-year consumer price index rose from 6.38 percent in March, the statistics agency said.

At the start of the year, Southeast Asia’s biggest economy almost completely abolished a decades-old

fuel subsidy regime -- which had proven to be extremely costly -- and let prices float with the market.

The decision came at a time when oil prices had fallen dramati-cally, and prompted steep drops in

the price of fuel and a slowdown in inflation.

However, global oil prices re-bounded by about 20 percent in April owing to several factors, including concerns about unrest in

Yemen, the weakening dollar and fewer US rigs in operation.

Pump prices in Indonesia rose, as did the price of public transport.

“The biggest contributor to inflation is the petrol price,” said statistics agency chief Suryamin, who like many Indonesians goes by one name.

Slowing inflation in February prompted the central bank to cut its key rate by 25 basis points, to 7.50 percent, as it sought to boost growth which has sunk to a five-year low.

However the move caused the rupiah to plunge, and the bank has maintained the rate at the same level since. (afp)

WASHINGTON - Former Hewl-ett-Packard Co Chief Executive Carly Fiorina announced on Monday she is running for president, becom-ing the only woman in the pack of Republican candidates for the White House in 2016.

Once one of the most powerful females in the American corporate world, Fiorina registers near the bottom of polls of the dozen or so

Republican hopefuls and has never held public office.

“I think I’m the best person for the job because I understand how the economy actually works. I un-derstand the world, who’s in it, how the world works,” she said when announcing her bid on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” show.

Fiorina, 60, was forced to resign from HP in 2005 as the tech com-

pany struggled to digest a $19 billion merger with Compaq.

She has attracted warm receptions at events in the early voting state of Iowa where she is positioning her-self as a conservative, pro-business Republican highly critical of Demo-cratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

Fiorina argues that her gender would be an advantage in any general election contest with Clinton, as it

would dilute the Democratic front-runner’s claim that she has the best hope of becoming America’s first woman president.

“I have a lot of admiration for Hillary Clinton but she clearly is not trustworthy. She has not been trans-parent about a whole set of things that matter,” Fiorina said on Monday.

The men drove up Sunday night as the contest in suburban Dallas was scheduled to end and began shooting at a security officer, the City of Garland said in a statement. Police officers returned fire, killing the men.

“Because of the situation of what was going on today and the history of what we’ve been told has happened at other events like this, we are considering their car (is) possibly containing a bomb,” Officer Joe Harn, a spokesman for the Garland Police Department, said at a news conference.

Police aren’t aware of any ongo-ing threat and had not received any credible threats before the event, Harn said.

Harn said it was not immedi-ately clear whether the shooting was connected to the event inside, a contest hosted by the New York-based American Freedom Defense Initiative that would award $10,000 for the best cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

Such drawings are deemed in-sulting to many followers of Islam and have sparked violence around the world. According to mainstream

Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muham-mad — even a respectful one — is considered blasphemous.

In January, 12 people were killed by gunmen in an attack against the Paris office of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which had lampooned Islam and other religions and used depictions of Muhammad. Another deadly shoot-ing occurred the following month at a free speech event in Copenhagen featuring an artist who had carica-tured the prophet.

The Curtis Culwell Center,

a school district-owned public events space, was evacuated earlier Sunday, as were some surrounding businesses. Police blocked off a large area around the center Sunday night. There was a heavy police presence, and police helicopters circled overhead as bomb squads worked on the car.

Authorities haven’t removed the bodies of the gunmen, who have not yet been identified, Harn said. The bodies are too close to the car to be removed, but that will happen once the scene is clear, he said.

The security officer who was shot worked for the Garland Inde-pendent School District, Harn said. He was treated at a local hospital for injuries and had been released

Sunday night. After the shooting, about 75 at-

tendees at the contest were escorted by authorities to another room in the conference center. They were then taken to a separate location, where an Associated Press reporter was told they could not leave until FBI agents arrived to question them.

Johnny Roby of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was attending the conference. He told the AP he was outside the building when he heard around about 20 shots that appeared to be coming from the direction of a passing car.

Roby said he then heard two sin-gle shots. He said he heard officers yell that they had the car before he was sent inside the building. (ap)

2 gunmen killed outside Muhammad cartoon contest

GARLAND, Texas — Two gunmen were killed after opening fire on a security officer outside a contest for cartoon depictions of Prophet Muhammad and a bomb squad was called in to search their vehicle as a precaution, authorities said.

TABANAN - Aside from hav-ing the Alas Kedaton tourist at-traction, Kukuh village, Marga subdistrict, also has the other potential tourist attractions. The presence of wood-carving, tradi-tional house compound, ancient relics, trekking path and Ulun Danu (a pond owned by Subak) has become the supporting tourist attraction.

Kukuh village was potential to be made a tourism village be-cause it had

Alas Kedaton tourist attraction. Tatag hamlet located in the north of Alas Kedaton had potential to be developed into trekking tour-ism. A journey for 1.5 hours could offer a very beautiful rice fields.

Tatag hamlet had a myriad of uniqueness so that it was very potential to be made into a tourism village. Some of the uniqueness included a temple spring sur-rounded by

four showers in the four direc-tions; local residents abstained from consuming beef; as well as most of elderly villagers served as temple priests. Topography of the hamlet was terraced so that it made the hamlet look very unique. Besides, it also had uniqueness where people taking bath in public

bathing place should be naked, without a piece of cloth.

The water was clear and did not decrease despite in dry sea-son. Women in their period are prohibited from bathing in the shower. Similarly, the other resi-dents who are

in cuntaka period or temporarily impure (due to a death of family member) do not dare to shower in the spring of the Gede Dalem Majapahit Temple.

Around 900 ringside seats were available for the celebrities, busi-ness tycoons and entertainment moguls who have converged on Las Vegas, and actors Clint Eastwood and Ben Affleck were among those who secured the prized positions. Tennis greats Andre Agassi and his wife, Steffi Graf, were also in the front rows, squeezed in alongside boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Hollywood stars Christian Bale and Michael Keat-ing.

Other high-profile fans watch-ing ringside, where seats have demanded up to $350,000 on the resale site StubHub, included for-mer heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield and retired NBA stars Michael Jordan, Charles Bark-ley and Reggie Miller. Also making their way into the Arena via the

red carpet were American actors Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Denzel Washington and Claire Danes, Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook and English musician Sting.

The atmosphere in the heavily secured 16,800-seat Garden Arena was electric as the two fighters prepared to make their way to the ring for a bout that is expected to be the biggest grossing of all time with a ‘Who’s Who’ of society looking on.

However, not every A-lister ended up close to the action with some of them bumped into the upper seating levels. “They can’t all sit in the front row,” said Dena duBoef of Top Rank promotions, who represent Pacquiao. “Tickets and seating have probably been the biggest nightmare for this fight.”

Fewer than 1,000 tickets for the

Mayweather-Pacquiao bout were offered to the public, and those were snapped up in seconds. The re-mainder was divided among the two fighters’ promotion companies and MGM Resorts, which made seats available to their best customers -- gamblers who carry a minimum $250,000 credit line in the casino.

“It’s very disappointing that so few tickets were available to the fans,” Pacquiao fan Raymond Avenido from Hermosa Beach, California told Reuters. “It would have been nice to have had a big-ger venue, and make the tickets affordable for those of us who are not high-paying customers.

“As a boxing fan, I would have paid between $500 and $800. That should be the ceiling for someone who has been following Manny Pacquiao since he was still boxing in the Philippines.”(rtr)

OAKLAND, California — Stephen Curry burnished his NBA Most Valuable Player credentials by scoring 22 points and adding seven assists to lead the Golden State Warriors to a 101-86 win over the undermanned Memphis Grizzlies in Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals on Sunday.

In the East, Bradley Beal shook off a sprained ankle to score 28 points as Washington knocked off top-seeded Atlanta 104-98 in Game 1 of their series. After the Warriors rolled to victory, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that Curry has won the Most Valuable Player award for the season.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not released the voting results. An official announcement is ex-pected Monday, and Curry will be presented with the award on the court before Game 2 on Tuesday.

Curry pushed the pace from start to finish, and the Grizzlies never could slow Golden State down. The Warriors went ahead by 16 in the second quarter, and Curry kept the pressure after Memphis moved within seven. Asked about the MVP award following the game, Curry said he had no idea he had won.

“Obviously, I know what the situation is, and just trying to fo-cus on the game, and if I get a call (Monday), I’ll definitely be happy, and there will be a lot of people that can be proud of that moment, as well, and we’ll enjoy it,” he said.

Klay Thompson added 18 points and Draymond Green scored 16 to help the top-seeded Warriors roll to their 21st straight victory at home.

Marc Gasol had 21 points and nine rebounds, and Zach Randolph finished with 20 points and nine rebounds for a Memphis team miss-ing point guard Mike Conley. He sat on the bench in a suit, his left eye still swollen as he continues to recover from surgery to repair broken bones in his face.

In Atlanta, the well-rested Wiz-ards wore down the Hawks in the fourth quarter, with Otto Porter scoring a couple of big baskets and Marcin Gortat sealing the victory with a lay-up off a pass from John Wall with 14.6 seconds remaining.

Wall had 18 points and 13 assists and Paul Pierce added 19 points for the Wizards, who became the first team in NBA history to win four straight Game 1s on the road, improving to 8-1 in the playoffs away from Washington over the past two years.

After racing to a 37-26 lead after the first quarter, Atlanta couldn’t make any baskets late in the game. The Hawks shot just 5 of 28 in the final period, including 1 of 10 from 3-point range.

DeMarre Carroll had another big game for Atlanta with 24 points, but went scoreless in the final quarter. Kyle Korver made only 5 of 15 shots, Al Horford was 7 of 19, and Jeff Teague went 4 of 14. (ap)

“Today was not a game to enjoy,” Mourinho said. “Today was the game to finish the job.” But it was a trophy that was really won in the opening months of the season, with Chelsea having been atop the standings from the opening weekend. With only two losses in 35 games, Chelsea was rare-ly troubled in its pursuit of a fourth league title in 11 seasons — and the fifth in its 110-year history.

“This is unbelievable, we’ve worked so hard this year to get over the line,” captain John Terry said as the blue and white streamers descended on the Stamford Bridge field. “Today was a tough match, a little bit nervous, but we got over the line.”

Fittingly, the title-winning goal came from Eden Hazard, a week after the Belgium winger’s dynamic, individual displays were honored by his fellow professionals with the player of the year award. Although Hazard’s uncharacteristically weak penalty kick was saved by Palace goalkeeper Julian Speroni at the end of the first half, the Belgian headed in the rebound for his 14th league goal of the season.

The victory was enough to es-tablish an insurmountable 13-point lead and dethrone Manchester City, which has now failed in both its title defenses since 2012 despite heavy investment from its Abu Dhabi own-ership. Chelsea is 16 points ahead of Arsenal, which has five games left to play.

“We showed absolutely every-thing since day one, everything foot-

ball demands from a team,” Mourin-ho said. “We had fantastic attacking football, we had fantastic domination ... we defended amazingly well.” The team also won the League Cup in March and Mourinho’s third Premier League title success confirms that the Portuguese coach is back at the pin-nacle of management in England.

Chelsea had only won the top-flight once in its first century — in

1955 — when Mourinho delivered the Premier League title a decade ago after the club’s fortunes were transformed following the 2003 take-over by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. Mourinho defended the title in 2006 before losing a power struggle with Abramovich the following year and going off to win titles for Inter Milan and Real Madrid before being welcomed back

to Stamford Bridge in 2013.During Mourinho’s six year-ab-

sence, Chelsea won the league only once in 2010 under Carlo Ancelotti and the Portuguese manager returned to a Chelsea with the club’s finances now constrained by UEFA Financial Fair Play rules. “When you go back to a place where you had success be-fore, you risk a little bit your prestige and history,” Mourinho said after a winning a 22nd career title. “But I won again and now I can say I won titles for Chelsea with two different generations. ... A new team won.”

Chelsea has spent around $340

million on players in the last two years, but around $250 million was recouped by outgoing transfers. And perhaps the most significant addition was Diego Costa, who was brought in to bolster the strike force.

The $52-million striker’s 19 league goals between August and March propelled Chelsea to the summit. His recent absence with a recurrence of hamstring problems has coincided with the team losing some of its early-season swagger. Former Arsenal captain Cesc Fab-regas, recruited from Barcelona last year, has also faded in the second half of the season but his assists in the first half of the campaign provided the impetus for the title charge.

At the bedrock of the triumph has been Chelsea’s sturdy defense, which has conceded a league-low 27 goals. The back four has been anchored commandingly by Terry, the 34-year-old center back who has enjoyed a late-career revival under Mourinho and stifled the Palace attacks in a nervy conclusion on Sunday.

“One person said I couldn’t play twice in a week. He knows who he is,” Terry said in a reference to Rafa Benitez, a manager in the 2012-13 season. “I have proved him wrong as I’m still fighting.” Mourinho is also fighting against accusations that Chelsea is boring despite seeing off any threat from Arsenal and City while relying on 37-year-old striker Didier Drogba up front recently.

The Ivorian has been in all four of Chelsea’s Premier League title-winning sides after a spell abroad be-tween the third and fourth triumphs. “This one is sweet,” Drogba said. “With or without me, Chelsea will always be No. 1.” And that’s how the team will end this season. (ap)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Substitutes Cristian Pavon and Pablo Perez scored in the last six minutes to lift Boca Juniors to a 2-0 win over bitter rival River Plate on Sunday in the “Supercla-sico,” a victory that pushed Boca three points clear of River and San Lorenzo in the Argentine first division.

In a game at Boca’s La Bom-bonera stadium in the Argen-tine capital that offered lots of chances for both sides, Pavon finally scored in the 84th minute on a sharp-angled shot from the left wing, beating River keeper Marcelo Barovero inside the near post. Perez added the clincher in the 87th, beating Barovero who was caught off his line.

The goal could mean a little something extra for Pavon. “I made a bet with the son of my agent before the match,” he said, explaining the proposition this way: if he scored a goal, he would be loaned a BMW to drive for a month.

That’s quite a start to what Ar-gentines are calling the “trilogy”

between the Buenos Aires rivals. The teams meet again Thursday at River’s Monumental Stadium in the round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores. The return leg is May 14 at La Bombonera for their third match in 12 days. “We still l have two finals to play,” Boca forward Daniel Osvaldo said. “But this is beautiful. We had more chances and deserved to win.”

Both sides had plenty of oppor-tunities before the breakthrough goal in front of a crowd of 45,000 at La Bombonera. Boca’s Daniel Osvaldo hit the post in the 10th minute and teammate Andres Chavez missed a wide open net in the 30th. Carlos Sanchez had River’s best chance in the half when he hit the crossbar with a rising shot in the 34th.

River applied pressure early in the second half with Boca keeper Agustin Orion making a leaping save on Rodrigo Mora’s shot in the 54th. Boca had chances, too, with Nicolas Lodeiro shoot-ing just wide 10 minutes later as momentum moved back and forth. (ap)

Chelsea’s John Terry celebrates after the English Premier League soccer match between Chel-sea and Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge stadium in London, Sunday, May 3, 2015. Chelsea won the match 1-0 to secure Premier League title with 3 games to spare.

5-year drought ends as Chelsea is champion of England again

LONDON — The five-year drought is over. Chelsea is Premier League champion again — with three games to spare. Chelsea’s players danced around the field after securing the title with a scrappy 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday that encapsulated the recent cautious pragmatism of Jose Mourinho’s team.

BARCELONA - After a slow start at Barcelona, Luis Suarez now has a strike rate comparable to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, while his selfless style has also helped instill a spirit of camaraderie within their deadly attack. In recent seasons, Barca’s play was emphasised by their short-passing football but now it is the ruthlessness of their forward trio that is propelling the club towards a second treble in six years.

Messi, Suarez and Neymar have amassed 108 goals between them

and have the Spanish record of 118 goals scored by Real Madrid trio Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and Gonzalo Higuain in the 2011-12 season well and truly in their sights.

Suarez arrived from Liverpool under a cloud following his four-month biting ban but now settled in, he has 17 goals from his last 16 games in all competitions fol-lowing Barca’s 8-0 demolition of Cordoba on Saturday. During his first few months in the side after his comeback in October, he was

praised for his team ethic and providing assists. It is only now that the goals have started to come freely while his unselfish attitude has proved contagious.

Against Cordoba, Messi also hit a double but despite his com-petition with Ronaldo to be the league’s top scorer, he turned down the opportunity for a hat-trick by allowing Neymar to take a penalty. The Argentine’s action comes in stark contrast to a week ago, when Ronaldo was angry that Alvaro Arbeloa nipped in ahead of him to

score against Almeria, leading to some whistles from the Bernabeu crowd.

“I am very happy at the mo-ment and this is all down to the support and confidence that my team mates have given me,” Suarez told reporters. “Without them and my family I would not be scoring these goals.”

Suarez immediately struck up a close friendship with Messi and this, along with their effective link-up play, is a reason why the Argentine is enjoying his football

again. After a lean 2014, he now has 40 La Liga goals, two behind Ronaldo, and the impact of Suarez has certainly taken some of the pressure off him.

Barca remain on course to repeat the 2009 side’s treble, sitting at the top of the La Liga standings with a two-point advantage over Real Madrid with three games to go.

They also face Athletic Bilbao in the King’s Cup final but before that comes a Champions League semi-final first leg with Bayern Munich on Wednesday. (rtr)

Suarez brings more than just goals to Barcelona attack

PARIS — Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned to spearhead Paris Saint-Germain’s attack, but it was Edinson Cavani who set the tone with his fourth goal in four games as PSG won 2-0 at Nantes to move three points clear of Lyon in the French title race on Sunday. Ibrahimovic had missed the three previous games for insulting officials after a league match against Bordeaux at the end of March, giving Cavani the chance to play in his favored center forward role.

Despite being pushed out wide on the right because of Ibrahimovic’s re-turn, Cavani took only three minutes to make his mark with an opportunist shot that went in off the post. PSG goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez made two smart saves in the first half, in between PSG’s second goal scored by Blaise Matuidi in the 31st. The France midfielder ran onto Ibrahi-movic’s pass and finished with a left-footed shot past goalie Remy Riou.

“We’re top of the league and I hope we stay there. It’s going to be hard to catch us now,” Matuidi said. “Now that we have fewer games to play, we’ll be able to recover better and to give our all until the end of the season.”

The only downside for PSG was that midfielders Thiago Motta and Marco Verratti both picked up yel-low cards and will be suspended for the away game at Montpellier on

May 16. Lyon, which beat struggling Evian 2-0 on Saturday, has a slightly better goal difference than PSG.

“I’m very happy with how we played, the first 25 minutes were of a very high standard,” PSG coach Laurent Blanc said. “Nantes woke up after that and caused us a few problems, but overall I think we controlled the game well.”

Meanwhile, teenage forward Anthony Martial continued his fine run of form with his eighth goal in nine games as Monaco beat Toulouse 4-1 to consolidate third place and a Champions League spot next season. The 19-year-old Martial, one of the French league’s best players in the second half of the season, slotted home a penalty in first-half injury time to make it 2-1 after being fouled from behind by midfielder Oscar Trejo.

Monaco took the lead in the ninth minute through Portuguese midfield-er Bernardo Silva’s slightly deflected strike — his fifth goal in four games, only for Denmark forward Martin Braithwaite to level midway through the first half. Portugal midfielder Joao Moutinho added the third goal in the 56th when he headed in a cross from Italian defender Andrea Raggi.

Both sides finished with 10 men after Monaco midfielder Nabil Dirar and Toulouse defender Jean-Armel Kana-Biyik were sent off in the 79th following an altercation. Forward

Valere Germain replaced Martial in the 89th and made it 4-1 two minutes into injury time after running onto a fine angled pass from Moutinho.

The win keeps Monaco five points ahead of fourth-place Marseille with three matches to play. Monaco travels to play Marseille at Stade Ve-lodrome next week. Earlier, Divock Origi scored his eighth goal of the season as Lille kept alive its hopes of qualifying for Europe with a 3-1 win over Lens.

Last-place Lens was relegated even before traveling to its fierce rival for the northern derby. The club has been struggling the whole season after Azerbaijani shareholders failed to invest as much as promised into the club.

But the visitors gave their fans something to cheer when Pablo Cha-varria scored in the 24th, making the most of Taylor Moore’s long ball to slot home from close range.

Lille was rewarded for its of-fensive pressure in the 41st after Adama Traore was fouled by Loick Landre on the edge of the box, with Sofiane Boufal coolly converting the penalty.

The hosts dominated the second half but failed to create real chances until Djibril Sidibe latched on to the ball on the edge of the area after a one-two with Traore and slotted home in the 74th. Origi, on a season’s loan from Liverpool, made it 3-1 in added time. (ap)

between the Buenos Aires rivals.

(ap)

(ap)

(afp)

Inflation accelerates on fuel pricesJAKARTA - Indonesia’s inflation accelerated to 6.79 percent in April spurred by higher fuel

costs after global oil prices rebounded, official data showed Monday.

A breast cancer survivor who lost a stepdaughter to drug addiction,

Fiorina is a multimillionaire who has known adversity.

Around the time of her ouster from HP she was derisively dubbed the “anti-Steve Jobs” by one respected tech news website, though the Com-paq merger was eventually seen as a success.

Fiorina’s attempts to kick start a political career have been rocky. (rtr)

(ap)

French President Francois Hollande, center, is greeted by Culture minister of Qatar Dr. Hamad Bin Abdulaziz Al-Kuwari at the Doha airport, Qatar, Monday, May 4, 2015.

(afp)

The celebration is very colorful.

Head of the Gianyar Transporta-tion Agency, Cokorda Agusnawa, said that the implementation of parking restriction within a radius of several meters around the Catus Pata is part of a new urban plan for Jalan Suweta that includes the opening of a central parking lot. “The first part of the plan includes

the road east of the Art Market, as well as the part of the road to the South and West of the headman’s office. FOr the time being the Northern part of Jalan Suweta is still being used,” he said.

Starting in May, there will also be parking restriction implemented for the paved road in a radius of 500

meters around Catus Pata. How-ever, he added that the restrictions will be applied gradually as will those restrictions that will apply to the East and West.

“All this will happen gradually, starting in May and will continue to include other sections of road in Ubud. The ultimate goal is to have

all the major paved roads in Ubud free of parked vehicles,” he said.

In line with this vision, the cen-tral parking area on Jalan Suweta is hoped to be able to accommodate all the vehicles. Parking for motor-cycles, specifically those belonging to employees of hotels, restaurant and other tourist facilities will likely be directed to park in the area of Ta-man Kaja or Taman Kelod. “All this is still being discussed. For instance, if the central parking lot is filled to capacity, people may be directed to

park in the Taman,” he said. Regardless, parking plans will con-

tinue to be developed, including the possibility of valet parking. (nik)
