Johnson says truck owner Audie Bridges rec-ognized him and refused to accept money for the damage. He thanked the Wakefield resident for “being so cool about the whole thing” before pos-

Monday the incident happened about a month ago and he was able to fix the damaged mirror himself.

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebra-tion of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beau-tifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beauti-fully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

Enterprises (SMEs) prepare themselves to face the imple-mentation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, is offering free registration for brands or copyright for SMEs.

The government of Tabanan through the Cooperatives and SMEs Agency is also encouraging local SMEs to register their businesses. Unfortunately of the 60 SMEs that could potentially register patents or trade marks only 20 have submitted requests for certification.

Possibly, these SMEs are not registering their brands because they consider this formality to not be essential or desirable at this time, especially those whose prod-ucts have been selling even without such registration. However what many may not realize is that certification will provide security for their products to compete in the AEC where foreign products will suddenly be in direct competition with their own.

The Head of the Tabanan Cooperatives and SMEs Agency, A.A. Gede Dalem Tresna, explained on Monday (Jun. 15) that the huge potential of Indonesia as a new market will become the target of many foreign products. For this reason, the certification of local products is im-portant for the protection of SMEs and is always a way for them to increase the price of their products in the new ASEAN market place. “We are continuing to try to encourage SMEs to register for the certification, the cost of which is currently being borne by the central govern-ment,” said Tresna.

He explained that Tabanan has approximately 7,125 SMEs but only 6,000 of them, scattered around 75 vil-lages, have registered their name and address. Among the 6,000 SMEs at least 60 SMEs are considered to be candidates for obtaining certification for trade mark or patent rights. However, only 20 SMEs have submitted the requirements for registering their trade mark. “The required documents have been sent to the central govern-ment and are awaiting approval,” said Tresna.

The Tabanan Cooperatives and SMEs Agency will continue to approach the remaining SMEs so that they can take advantage of the free registration being offered to SMEs for certification, as this program will only re-main in effect for another few weeks - until the end of June, 2015. After this deadline, SMEs will have to pay to register, in accordance with prevailing rules. Tresna added that previously the certification process for SMEs in Tabanan had to be paid for by the SMEs themselves because no funding was provided by the government of Tabanan “Therefore while the free registration program is still in effect, we will continue to encourage SMEs in Tabanan to register,” he added.

According to Tresna, there are three SMEs who have applyed for certification of patent rights. Of the three, only one received certification, namely: Mika Ceramic Pejaten that produces engraved ceramic teapots. By having a pat-ent right and trade mark, SME’s can increase the price of their product, and this certification also protects them from other company’s copying or counterfeiting their product. “So, this certification provides legal protection. Those who counterfeit can be prosecuted and indemni-fied,” explained Tresna. (kmb24)

“AA has been examined using the lie detector. However, there have been no reports from the Denpasar Police on the findings. AA currently holds the status of witness because he was the intermediary who introduced Agus to Margariet. The suspect Agus and Mrs. M (Margariet—Ed) may be examined tomorrow (Tues-day—Ed),” said the Spokesperson of Bali Police, Hery Wiyanto, on Monday (Jun. 15).

AA was examined as a witness because he is considered important in the develop-ment of Angeline’s murder case. According to Wiyanto, AA knows a lot about Ange-line’S adoptive mother. However, the the police spokesperson would not confirm whether AA serves as a key witness or not. “Obviously, he (AA—Ed) just served as an intermediary. So far, there are no clues about whether or not he was involved in the actual murder or not,” said Wiyanto.

On Monday, the INAFIS team of the

Bali Police returned to house at 26 Jalan Sedap Malam, East Denpasar, because according to Wiyanto the investigators obtained new information related to the crime scene. “Within a single day, the crime scene may be searched twice or more often. If there is a description of the suspect or witness that points to a new location it will certainly be visited by the investigators,” he said.

“Who knows, the scene of the crime the crime may be a source of new evidence such as fingerprints or objects that could be used as evidence. For example, samples of fingerprints are small, numerous and wide-spread. Besides, there are many chickens at the location which makes repeated visits to the site necessary,” added Wiyanto.

Wiyanto who is the former Spokesper-son of Bengkulu Police also said that the police have not received any new reports about the crime scene. To date, the investi-gators have not found any significant pre-

liminary evidence to prove that Margariet was involved in the murder of Angeline.

As for the blood found in Margariet’s room, Wiyanto emphasized that the police are still awaiting the results of the foren-sics laboratory from the National Police Headquarters -Denpasar Branch. The investigators do not want to be careless about speculating about the source of the blood, as it could very well have come from an animal.

“We do not know whose blood it is yet. It is still being examined by the forensics laboratory. Many animals also live at the location where Angeline’s body was found so it could even be cats blood for all we know. According to information obtained last night (Monday—Ed), the results of the lab tests will be sent from forensics laboratory in Jakarta sometime within the next two or three days. They have taken a long time to examine the sample,” he said. (kmb36)

Angeline’s suspected murderer to be examined by lie detector

DENPASAR - Because the confessions of murder suspect Agustinus Tae alias Agus have been frequently changing, Bali Police investigators have asked to borrow a lie detector from the National Police Headquar-ters. Agus is scheduled to be examined using the lie detector on Tuesday (Jun. 16). So far, only Agus,’ friend, AA has been examined using the device.

The companies behind Xbox One and PlayStation 4 (PS4) consoles staged flashy media events where they showed off dizzying action games and spotlighted exclusive content.

Microsoft grabbed the spotlight early Monday with word that people will be able to play beloved old video games on new-generation Xbox One consoles. Gamers have long-desired such “backward com-patibility” for titles, which typically retail for about $60.

Microsoft touted “exclusive” blockbuster content, including “Halo 5 Guardians,” from in-house teams and early availability of hotly antici-pated video games such as “Rise of the Tomb Raider,” set for release late this year by outside studios.

“If you have been waiting to move from your Xbox 360 to Xbox One, now is the time,” Xbox division head Phil Spencer said.

Sony PlayStation 4 consoles trounced Xbox One after the new generation consoles hit the market in late 2013.

Microsoft since lowered the price and increased the focus on game play, rather than features such as

streaming films, and has begun nar-rowing the sales gap.

The ability to re-play previous generation Xbox games promised to be a hit with gamers who have lamented that upgrading to new hardware, historically, has come with leaving behind old titles that don’t work on new consoles.

“Xbox One backward capability allows you to play the games you have already invested in,” Spencer said, eliciting raucous cheers from an audience of gamers, partners and the press.

Xbox executive Mike Ybarra promised that more than 100 titles would be available by year’s end in a library of games with backward compatibility, crowing that a per-sonal favorite, “Mass Effect,” will be among them.

Xbox and PlayStation are both investing in new franchises, along with cultivating creative original content from small independent studios.

WASHINGTON - Facebook on Monday unveiled a new feature that allows smartphone users to privately share photos of friends, by sifting through images with facial recognition technology.

The standalone app, called Moments, allows users to share photos with friends who are in them, and to get images of themselves.

“It’s hard to get the photos your friends have taken of you, and everyone always insists on taking that same group shot with multiple phones to en-sure they get a copy,” product manager Will Ruben said in a blog post.

“When you go to a wedding, for example, there are many people taking great photos throughout the day. You all want a quick way to share your photos with the friends who are in them, and get photos that you’re in back. The same is true for smaller events too, like a kayak trip or a night out.”

The new application allows users to create groups that sync photos to friends

“You can then privately sync those photos quickly and easily with specific friends, and they can choose to sync their photos with you as well,” Ruben said.

Moments uses facial recognition technology to group photos based on the friends who are in them, similar to the “tagging” used by the Facebook social network.

The new app was launched Monday for users of Apple and An-droid handsets in the United States, and will be rolled out to other countries over time. (afp)

Such complaint directly touches various lines of tourism ranging from tour guides, hotels, villas, travel agencies to boat drivers. This condi-tion happens because many travelers cancel their planned visit to enjoy the beauty of coral reef and underwater fish around the Menjangan Island.

It was expressed in person by a representative of the Buleleng Tour-ism Players Forum, Yoyo Asongko, whose members include those operat-ing at Banyumandi, Labuan Lalang, Pemuteran and Lovina areas. The admission ticket at IDR 200,000 does not include the entire supporting activities such as snorkeling, diving, boat rental and diving equipment rental. The increase in admission ticket for foreign travelers has no profitable correlation to lower levels of tourism and it tends to eliminate the tourism activities by degrees.

“We do the action because central government, in this regards the Min-istry of Forestry and Environment, has no negotiation with us, and insists on enforcing the rule regarding the increase in the price from IDR 20,000 to IDR 200,000. They should first

make a survey because the activity on the Menjangan Island involves some additional activities including their cost, and not only the price of admission ticket,” said Yoyo when met on Monday (Jun. 15) at Banyu-mandi pier.

With other tourism players, Yoyo is still promoting the field action in the hope there will be a common ground on the issue regarding the increase in the price of admission ticket for foreign travelers. “We can not specify how long this action will take place. Probably tomorrow (Tuesday—Ed) we will come to the TNBB office. We’d like to ask for consideration of recommendations. Greater action will be performed by totally boycotting the entire crossing activities, either for travelers or worship activities,” he said.

Tourism players claimed not to be involved in the consultation to central government, and the government of Buleleng is considered to take action alone. Actually the complaint has emerged before the two-month trial of the rule enforcement. Due to this condition the community begins to

SURABAYA - Bali’s giant Gibson guitar land-mark located at the Hard Rock Cafe (HRC) in Kuta has been replaced with the “double neck” guitar, which was popularized by well-known Indonesian guitarist Balawan.

“We just finished our concert to officially inau-gurate the giant statue of the Rick Hanes double neck guitar,” one-fingered guitarist Doddy Hernanto informed.

The new guitar landmark is the replica of the Indonesian-produced Rick Hanes double neck guitar, which is known worldwide.

“This is also an effort to promote the domestic product as one of the creative industry’s products that has been known worldwide,” affirmed Doddy. The double neck guitar was designed by a guitar expert who is also Rick Hanes’ CEO, Tommy Kaihatu, who specially made the guitar for Balawan.

“This model has become the Giant Guitar Land-mark, which was built by Hard Rock Cafe,” Doddy said. The making of this giant guitar landmark at Kuta Beach is an amalgamation of a variety of cre-

ative industries, ranging from promoting the Rick Hanes guitar to using Hard Rock Cafe as an advertis-ing medium, to promoting the photography industry, and supporting tourism in Bali. The existence of a giant guitar model has become one of Bali’s tourism icons, especially in Kuta Beach.

“This (Rick Hanes giant guitar) is an evidence of the struggle of Indonesia’s creative industries and is testament to the growing appreciation for domestic products, which are locally and internationally rec-ognized,” Doddy emphasized.

With regard to the creative industry, Doddy explained that it is defined as economic activities associated with the creation or use of knowledge and information. The giant Rick Hanes Double Neck Guitar landmark is expected to boost the image of the local guitar producer worldwide.

He added that the embodiment of creative indus-try products ranges from music, art, architecture, de-sign, advertising, crafts, fashion, film, photographic, cinematographic, gadgets, software, and games, to several others. (ant)

Tourism activity on Menjangan Island totally paralyzes

SINGARAJA - Crossing activities in the area of Banyumandi and Labuan Lalang pier, Pejarakan village, Gerokgak subdis-trict, totally paralyzed after the price hike of admission ticket for foreign travelers. Community groups coalesced into the Buleleng Tourism Players Forum strongly protested against the admission price considered too high from IDR 20,000 to IDR 200,000.

lose revenue. The losses are estimated to reach over IDR 100 million, not to mention the impact on the other tourism stakeholders, considering that many foreign travelers have cancelled their visit.

“Automatically people have no income. The activity totally paralyzes due to the increase in the admission ticket. As mediator, the TNBB is now in wedged position due to the pressure

from its superior and is now getting insistence from the grassroots. Gov-ernment of Buleleng certainly should have been intrigued to see this condi-tion because many people live from tourism in Buleleng and it must show off a concrete step,” said Yoyo.

In the meantime, Gede Budi from Lovina who works as a dive master in the waters of Menjangan Island every day complained about the condition

related to the increase in admission ticket. He worried that many people will go unemployed. “People can no longer peddle tourism services. Auto-matically people will go back to their original work (as hunters or loggers—Ed). If this is stagnant we can do noth-ing else,” he said. (kmb34)

The avalanches swept the Lang-tang Valley on Monday. Police of-ficial Pravin Pokhrel said Tuesday that it was still too dangerous for rescuers to go back to the area, where about 105 people are be-lieved to be buried under the rubble from the quake-induced landslide. Five soldiers who were injured in the latest avalanches have been brought to a nearby town for treat-ment, Pokhrel said.

The entire village was buried by the landslide in April. The village is located in the scenic Langtang Valley, which is popular with tour-ists. Rescue work following the landslide has been slow because the area, about 60 kilometers (35

miles) north of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, is at least a day’s hike from the nearest town and much of the trail was damaged by the mudslide.

The search for bodies had re-sumed after the weather improved following the quake, but the mon-soon season that began this month has brought rainfall. Landslides are common in mountainous Nepal during the rainy season, which be-gan in June and ends in September. Last week, a landslide buried six villages in northeastern Nepal, killing at least 35 people. Strong earthquakes April 25 and May 12 killed nearly 8,800 people in Nepal. (ap)

MIAMI - Jeb Bush cast him-self as a more moderate type of Republican while still holding on to his conservative principles as he began his U.S. presidential bid with

an eye on the Hispanic vote which has eluded the party for years. The former Florida governor announced his campaign for the Republican nomination to run in the November

2016 election at a multicultural col-lege in Miami where he promised to pass meaningful immigration reform, spoke fluent Spanish and reminded voters he married a Mexican.

It was part of an effort by Bush, 62, to strike a different tone in a crowded field of 10 other Repub-licans and at the same time also showing he was keen to move out of the shadow of his father and brother and their White House legacies. Even though the Bush family has a long history at the pinnacle of Washington government and poli-tics, Bush portrayed himself as an outsider. He vowed to reform Wash-ington, but Bush is only the latest candidate in the field to do so.

“We don’t need another presi-dent who merely holds the top spot among the pampered elites of Washington. We need a president willing to challenge and disrupt the whole culture in our nation’s capital,” Bush, who was governor of Florida from 1999 to 2007, told supporters at Miami Dade College. His speech was mostly the standard Republican fare of attacks on big government, and promises to pro-tect free enterprise and strengthen America’s role in the world.

But the tone of the campaign launch showed he seeks to use his links to Latino culture to give himself a lift over his Republican rivals, even if two of them - senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz - have

stronger Hispanic credentials than Bush does. Bush was preceded on stage by the Chirino Sisters, a Miami singing trio who sang a classic Cuban song, and an African-American preacher.

“As a candidate, I intend to let everyone hear my message, includ-ing the many who can express their love of country in a different lan-guage,” Bush said, before switching to Spanish and calling on Latinos to “help us have a campaign that welcomes you.” Latinos will make up more than 10 percent of the electorate in 2016 and are important in swing states such as Nevada, Florida and Colorado.

Failure to win the Latino vote plagued Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney who was supported by only 27 percent of Hispanic voters in 2012 after op-posing comprehensive immigration reform and making comments seen as anti-immigrant.

Senator John McCain of Arizona won 31 percent among Hispanics in 2008, down from a stronger perfor-mance by Bush’s brother President George W. Bush who was backed by 44 percent of Latino voters in 2004.

LATINO VOTERS“I think Republicans have got

to try something. It’s pretty hard for them to win the White House if current Hispanic voting trends continue. (Bush) has some unique

abilities to appeal to those vot-ers and he’s going to maximize them,” said David Yepsen, di-rector of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illi-nois University. Bush’s speech on Monday was briefly interrupted by pro-immigration reform pro-testers.

He quickly responded: “By the way. Just so that our friends know. The next president will pass mean-ingful immigration reform so that that will be solved not by executive order,” Bush said, in reference to President Barack Obama’s use of presidential powers to ease immi-gration restrictions.

Bush held an early lead in opin-ion polls of Republican voters when he first began talking about a White House run six months ago, but that has now dissipated. He is essentially tied for the lead with a host of challengers.

He was joined on Monday by his mother Barbara Bush, 90, at the event. Former presidents George H.W. Bush, his father, and George W. Bush, his brother, did not attend. Bush reminded voters that his wife Columba was a Mexican he met on a visit south of the Rio Grande more than 40 years ago.

“In 1971, 8 years before then-candidate Ronald Reagan said that we should stop thinking of our neighbors as foreigners, I was ahead of my time in cross-border outreach,” Bush said.(ap)

TABANAN - Adventure tours like riding ATV, motor cross to pedicab while enjoying beautiful panorama have become the current traveler’s choice. A breakthrough of unique vehicle having the potential for adventure tour has been made by the SMKN 3 Tabanan vocational school in the form of locust motorcycle. Although it is named motorcycle, it applies four wheels and has a steer-ing wheel.

Principal of the SMKN 3 Tabanan, I Ketut Suardana, explained on Monday (Jun. 15) that the idea of making the locust motorcycle originates from a visit to Yogyakarta and sees a love pedicab. “Love pedicab is modified into car-shaped frame. This frame will shine and looks like a car at night,” said Suardana. The SMKN 3 Tabanan then innovates by using the engine of Vixion motorcycle and designs the frame like a racing car. This project was worked on from April 28, 2015 and formally launched in the education fair on Friday (Jun. 5) to Sunday (Jun. 7) in Tabanan.

Workmanship of the motorcycle itself was done one month before it was officially displayed to the public. It involves students, teachers and technicians from Yamaha. Suardana recognized there are still shortcomings in the in-novation of the locust motorcycle such as the connecting frame to front wheel is too long. It should have a length of 60 cm from one wheel to another, but the current one is 80 cm. “Since it has just been created for a month, there are surely things needed to be fixed. One of which is the dis-tance of front wheel must be shortened,” said Suardana.

Since it is too long, the movement of the locust motor-cycle is a little hard to control especially when turning. Similarly, the engine cannot cover long distance because it quickly heats. The experiment is just conducted for a distance of one kilometer. According to Suardana, it spent IDR 16 million to make the locust motorcycle.

In the future, other than enhancing the innovation of the SMKN 3, his party will register it to get a patent right. He said that the economic potential of this locust motorcycle innovation cannot be sold as commercial vehicle for daily use. However, it has great potential to be applied in adven-ture tourism. “By and large, it is used as tourist facility for sightseeing or golf car,” said Suardana. (kmb24)

SEMARAPURA - Rampant hill dredging activities start hap-pening in the Dawan subdistrict, Klungkung. This time, it is not only held on the hill of Pundukdawa and Pesinggahan hamlet at Dawan by using heavy equipment. Hill dredging has even expanded to the hill areas of Gunaksa, precisely on Buayang Hill. More severely, the hill dredging action is done for commercial purposes, where some of them are intended for housing complex. Unfortunately not all of the developers dredging the hills have a permit.

There are four spots or hills in Dawan being dredged. One of them is the hill at Buayang, Gunaksa village. The three other hills are in Pesinggahan area. At Pesingga-han, the hill dredging is scattered.

A dredging is located on Tengah Hill precisely in the north of Puseh Temple, while two other hills are located at Pundukdawa hamlet. The dredging on Pundukdawa Hill is done for housing and parking area of the Dalem Temple.

Unfortunately, the dredging of hill above the Dalem Temple at Pundukdawa is increasingly widespread. A number of heavy equipments are seen dredging on the hill last Monday. Several passing trucks are transporting the dredged materials. However, only a few workers encountered in the field know about the purpose of the hill dredging. It is said that the dredging is intended for preparing a parking lot. But on the one hand, some others said it will be used for futsal field. “The underneath is the

venue of cremation, sir. The higher floor is used for futsal activities,” said one of the workers.

In the meantime, the subdistrict head of Dawan, A.A. Gde Putra Widana, when asked for his confir-mation recognized the existence of the hill dredging at four locations in Dawan. But this subdistrict head from Gianyar claimed to be confused to take action because there are no clear rules whether the hill dredging mostly carried out on private land belongs to quarry activities or not.

“This makes us difficult to take action. Our authority in the subdis-trict is only to see and makes evalu-ation. In the meantime, the matter of taking action we will deliver to judicial team,” said A.A. Widana.

Other than the subdistrict head,

A.A. Widana accompanied by the Section Head of Klungkung Peace and Order, Ketut Suryatika, claimed that he has reprimanded the developer not to carelessly dredge the Pundukdawa Hill. At the beginning, the developer admitted to only arrange the land on the hill in order to get the best view. A.A. Widana admitted that all the developers dredging the hill have no permit. “We cannot forbid them from dredging the land because they do it on private land,” he said

In the meantime, the Acting Head of Klungkung Environment Agency, Wayan Wasta, when asked for his confirmation said that every hill dredging must submit a dredging permit in accor-dance with the Law No.32/2009

and Regulation of Ministry of Environment No. 5/2012. Of the four hills dredged, Wasta said that only one developer has filed the Environmental Management Effort (UKL) and Environmental Monitoring Effort (UPL) to the county government.

In the meantime, the head of the Judicial Team, Made Kasta, doubling as deputy regent of Klung-kung, claimed to have not received any report related to the hill dredg-ing in Dawan. It also includes the newly dredged Buayang Hill. However, with this information, Kasta claimed that he will come down to check. Moreover, it is touted that the hill is dredged for housing area. “I will check it later and thank you for the information,” said Kasta. (kmb)

In mid-afternoon Asian trade, US benchmark West Texas Inter-mediate for July was up 64 cents at $60.16 while Brent futures for August, a new contract, were up 35 cents at $64.30.

“Oil prices have fallen over three percent since June 10, so it

is possible that traders feel it is a good time to cover some of their short positions,” Bernard Aw, market strategist at IG Markets in Singapore, told AFP.

“A softer US dollar could have also contributed to the modest recovery. If you look from a

wider perspective, Brent crude remained stuck between $60 and $70 for the past two months, as underlying conditions did not change significantly.”

Greece and its creditors are locked in a stalemate after loan talks collapsed over the week-

end, bringing Athens just two weeks away from a catastrophic default on its debt, which could be followed by its exit from the eurozone.

Both sides insisted on Monday they were willing to engage, but without making a decisive step to break the deadlock.

The ta lks concerning the release of the 7.2 billion euros

($8.1 billion) in rescue funds remaining in Greece’s bai l -out have dragged on for five months.

Before Tuesday’s mild re-bound in crude futures prices, sentiment was weighed down by worries that US oil output is not declining and Saudi Arabia could further ratchet up produc-tion. (afp)

BEIJING - China had four million mil-lionaire households in 2014, the second-highest in the world after the United States, as the country’s stock market boom boosted private wealth, an independent survey showed Tuesday.

One million new millionaires were cre-ated in the country last year, the highest in-crease among all nations, US-based research firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG) said in a report.

The United States had seven million millionaire households last year, the most in the world. Japan took third place with one

million, according to the report.Growth in private wealth in China was

driven mainly by investments in local equi-ties, it said.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index finished 2014 as the best performer in Asia after soaring more than 50 percent.

“Strong market performance across the entire (Asia-Pacific excluding Japan) region -- thanks to solid domestic demand -- significantly increased the value of ex-isting assets... compared with the increase stemming from newly created wealth,” the report said.

The rise in the value of existing assets accounted for 76 percent of the region’s growth in private wealth, it added.

China had 1,037 households with more than $100 million in net worth, around one fifth of the United States’ 5,201 but the sec-ond-largest in the world, the report said.

Forbes said in an April report that main-land China was estimated to have a record 400 billionaires and billionaire families thanks to “a rally in stock prices”.

A yawning income gap has become a rising concern in the world’s most populous country, where the official Gini coefficient

stood at 0.469 last year. The figure is a commonly used measure

of income inequality, with 0 representing perfect equality and 1 total inequality. Some academics view 0.40 as a warning signal.

Analysts say that official corruption connected with government control of the economy, the state monopoly of some industries and a lack of social security for migrant workers are among reasons for the country’s income imbalance, according to a report earlier this year by the People’s Daily, the ruling Communist Party mouth-piece. TOKYO - Toyota won approval Tuesday for a contro-versial new share sale that it defended as a way to lure stable, long-term investors, overcoming stiff opposition from some institutional shareholders overseas.

The world’s biggest automaker said 75 percent of shareholders voted in favour of the plan that would see it sell up to 50 million of the new shares, which must be held for five years and will not be publicly traded.

Largely restricted to Japanese investors, the new “Model AA” shares carry voting rights and will be priced at a 20 percent premium on Toyota’s common shares, which closed at 8,395 yen ($68) in Tokyo.

Dividends paid on the new shares would rise from 0.5 percent to 2.5 percent by the end of the five-year holding period when investors could convert them to common shares or Toyota would repurchase them, it said.

Later Tuesday, the company said it would buy back as much as 600 billion yen ($4.9 billion) in stock to guard against dilution from the new share issue.

Toyota, which booked a record $18 billion profit in its latest fiscal year, said the share structure would lure longer-term investors and help it fund expensive research work, particularly on next-generation technol-ogy such as fuel cell cars.

The vote comes weeks after Japan formally adopted a corporate governance code that was hailed as usher-ing in a new era of transparency for investors.

US-based advisory Institutional Shareholder Ser-vices said the new shares would reduce investors’ influence over management decisions. “It is difficult to escape the impression that the company wants to increase stable and silent investors by replacing com-mon shareholders with Model AA shareholders,” it added. Mount Sinabung, one of about 130 ac-tive volcanoes in Indonesia, has been at the highest alert level for nearly two weeks. On Tuesday, at least 48 avalanches of hot ash barreled down its slopes, with the biggest reaching 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) south-eastward. The volcano in northern Sumatra, one of Indonesia’s main islands, has also been shooting smoke and ash more than 700 meters (2,300 feet) into the air.

Several thousand people, including women carrying babies in slings, have left the mountain in police trucks since Monday after the volcanic activity intensified over the weekend. Some streamed down the scorched slopes on motorcycles, their faces caked in ash.

But Subur Tambun, who heads the local disaster mitigation agency, said only 10,000 of about 33,000 people living within the main danger zone have moved into tent camps or government buildings a safe distance from the volcano. No injuries have been reported from the recent eruptions.

“The villagers insisted on tending crops,” Tambun said. “They are confident of being able to escape a major eruption. All we can do is ask them to leave.”

The 2,460-meter (8,070-foot) Mount Sinabung has erupted sporadically since 2010, when it caught scientists off guard and blew after being quiet for four centuries. Last year, a powerful explosion heard hun-dreds of kilometers (miles) away destroyed villages around its slopes and killed at least 17 people.

For days, authorities have pleaded with

villagers in the main danger zone, which stretches 7 kilometers (4 miles) to the south and southeast of the peak, to move to the tem-porary shelters, but have faced resistance.

“We have lost our vegetables, but not coffee,” said Sapta Sembiring Palawi from Gambir village, about 4.7 kilometers (3 miles) from the smoldering peak. “Coffee has let us survive and we have to take care of it now.” Palawi, a grandfather, is one of about 200 people from the village who have refused to move to government shelters.

The reluctance of people to leave their homes despite danger is common in the sprawling archipelago nation, which has more volcanoes than any other country and is prone to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes because of its location on the “Ring of Fire” — a series of fault lines stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia.

More than 150,000 people live along the slopes of Mount Sinabung, taking advantage of its fertile soil to grow chilies, oranges, cocoa and coffee.

Despite warnings, some evacuees returned home Tuesday to tend their crops and live-stock.

“We are worried, but we have to see our house and to clean up the ash from our farm,” said Yapti Sitepu, who was evacuated to a temporary shelter on Monday.

More than 2,000 people forced to move by last year’s eruption are still living in tempo-rary houses rented by the government while they wait for permanent relocation. Their villages are now uninhabitable. (ap)

JAKARTA - An Indonesian court will rule next week on a French drug convict’s attempt to avoid execution by challenging the presi-dent’s refusal to grant him clemency.

Serge Atlaoui will learn next Monday, June 22, whether the Jakarta State Administrative Court will allow his appeal to proceed, chief judge Ujang Abdullah told a brief hearing on Monday.

Atlaoui, 51, had been due to face the firing squad with seven other foreign drug convicts in April. But he won a temporary reprieve after authorities agreed to let an outstanding legal appeal run its course.

He is challenging President Joko Widodo’s decision to reject his request for clemency, typically a death row convict’s final hope of avoiding execution -- claiming the leader did not properly consider his case.

The administrative court had already de-cided in April that it did not have the jurisdic-tion to hear the appeal because granting clem-ency is the prerogative of the president.

Atlaoui’s lawyers are now challenging that decision. If the latest appeal fails, his lawyers have said they may pursue other legal avenues.

He was arrested in a 2005 raid on a secret drug laboratory outside Jakarta, with au-thorities accusing him of being a “chemist” at the site.

He has maintained his innocence, claim-ing that he was installing machinery in what he thought was an acrylics plant. France has mounted a diplomatic campaign to save him, warning Indonesia of unspecified con-sequences if he is put to death.

Indonesia’s execution in April of foreign drug convicts -- two from Australia, one from Brazil, and four Nigerians -- sparked inter-national anger, with Canberra temporarily recalling its ambassador.

However Widodo has insisted he will not change course on the death penalty, saying Indonesia faces an emergency due to rising drug use. (afp)

SYDNEY - Australian authorities work within the law to stop asylum-seeker boats, Prime Minister Tony Abbott insisted Tues-day, after reports officials have made cash payments to members of people-smuggling rings for years.

The government has refused to deny reports that six Indonesian crew members were paid $US5,000 each to return an asylum-seeker vessel to Indonesia in late May, saying no comment will be made on operational issues.

Indonesia has pushed for answers, with Vice President Jusuf Kalla warning Monday that paying people-smugglers would amount to “bribery”.

Abbott said that while Australia would do “whatever is necessary” to crack down on people-smuggling, he was confident officials had worked within the law.

“The most moral thing you can do here is stop the boats because as long as the boats are coming the evil people-smuggling trade is in business and the deaths continue,” Abbott told reporters in Canberra.

“So we’ve done the right thing, we’ve done the moral thing, the decent thing, the compassionate thing. We’ve stopped the boats by doing whatever is necessary within the law to stop the boats.”

The Sydney Morning Herald reported Tuesday that multiple sources said payments were made by intelligence officials to those involved with people-smuggling over at least four years, including under the previous La-bor government.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten said the Labor Party had never paid people-smugglers to turn around boats at sea, but said he would not comment on specific intelligence opera-tions.

Independent lawmaker Andrew Wilkie, a former intelligence analyst, said he was aware of “disruption operations” over a decade ago,

but it mostly involved intelligence sharing with Indonesian authorities.

“What I saw was sensible and legal, and more about steering Indonesian intelligence towards the smugglers,” Wilkie told Austra-lian Associated Press.

Wilkie said it was not an offence under Australian law for the Australian Secret Intelligence Service (ASIS), which collects foreign intelligence, to break the domestic law of another country.

Asked whether it was legal for ASIS to pay boat crew to turn boats around, Abbott replied: “I am absolutely confident that at all times Australian agencies have acted within the law.”

The issue of people-smuggling boats sail-ing from Indonesia to Australia has been a sensitive one between Canberra and Jakarta for years, but particularly since Abbott com-mitted to turning back boats to Indonesia.

The latest controversy comes after rela-tions were strained by Indonesia’s execution of two Australian drug smugglers, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, after they spent a decade on death row.

However Abbott said ties with Indonesia had been strengthened by the fact that the flow of asylum-seeker boats leaving that country for Australia had dried up.

“We have a good relationship with In-donesia,” he said, adding that thanks to cooperation between the nations, some 250 people-smugglers were in jail, mostly in Indonesia.

Australia has a hardline policy to stop the flow of people-smuggling boats, which includes refusing to resettle asylum-seekers who arrive on unauthorised vessels even if they are found to be genuine refugees.

They are instead detained in immigration camps on the Pacific islands of Nauru and Papua New Guinea, despite harsh criticism from rights groups. (afp)

The findings — gleaned from a new global model for how changes in outdoor air pollution could translate into changes in disease rates — high-light a demographic quirk of Asia’s two fastest-growing economies, where young populations have so far kept pollution-related mortality relatively low even amid breakneck economic development at steep envi-ronmental cost.

Both countries have looked to coal-fired power plants to boost electricity and fuel growth. Both have seen explosions in the number of vehicles on the roads. And both have hundreds of millions of impoverished people still relying on burning wood, kerosene or whatever they can grab at the garbage dump to build fires for cooking or keeping warm on winter nights.

But as their populations age, more people will become susceptible to conditions such as heart disease, cancer or stroke that are caused or exacerbated by air pollution. Already, Asian nations led by India and China account for 72 percent of the total 3.7 million annual deaths from outdoor air pollution — more than AIDS and malaria combined. Neither nation is anywhere near meeting air quality guidelines set by the World Health Organization. In India, pollution levels are still on the rise.

“The impact of particulate air pollution on preventable deaths is

far larger than most people realize,” said Howard Frumkin, dean of the University of Washington’s School of Public Health and an environmental health specialist who was not involved in the study.

In fact, if the entire world brought pollution levels down to WHO recom-mended levels, 2.1 million premature deaths could be prevented each year, according to the study, which was pub-lished in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

India and China would need to reduce average levels of tiny, inhalable particulate matter called PM 2.5 by 20 to 30 percent merely to offset their demographic changes and keep mor-tality rates steady, the study shows. That still won’t get them to the WHO’s recommendation of 10 micrograms per cubic meter, but it could help avoid several hundred thousand premature deaths every year.

“The opportunity for preventing premature deaths by cleaning up the air is enormous ... especially in China and India, where pollution levels are high and the exposed populations large and densely concentrated,” Frumkin said.

Actually reducing pollution-re-lated mortality in China, India and other countries with extreme pollution would require major action. Cutting mortality in half, for example, would take an average 68 percent reduction in PM 2.5 from 2010 levels, according

to the study. If pollution levels were to remain stable, Indian mortality would go up 21 percent and China’s 23 percent.

“These populations are getting old-er, and the diseases that air pollution affects will become more important,” said the study’s lead author, Josh Apte, an assistant professor of environmen-tal engineering at the University of Texas, Austin.

The study — one of the first to tackle the question of how much cleaner a country’s air needs to be to reduce premature mortality — com-bines global satellite pollution data, ground pollution measures, popula-tion statistics and globally recognized mortality rates for five key diseases for which air pollution is a risk fac-tor in order to calculate the potential benefits from hitting certain pollution-reduction targets.

The WHO last month declared air pollution the world’s largest single en-vironmental health risk, and pledged to come up with a global plan to start cleaning up the skies within a year. Ultimately, though, it will be up to national governments to act.

While Asia’s developing countries are considered today’s big air pollut-ers, the global mortality study shows that even less-polluted Western na-tions could collectively save up to a half-million people from premature death each year by cutting PM 2.5 concentrations by 25 percent. (ap)

LE BOURGET — Boeing landed the biggest order so far of the Paris Air Show with a deal Tuesday for 100 of its 737s — the single-aisle jets that Boeing’s CEO calls “the heart of the market” in the years to come. Boeing and European rival Airbus are racking up sales at the air show in the Le Bourget airfield outside Paris, with particularly tense competition be-tween the 737MAX series of planes and Airbus’ 320 family of jets.

Dutch-based leasing company AerCap ordered 100 737MAX-8 planes after long negotiations, Boe-ing said Tuesday. The deal is worth up to $10.7 billion, though custom-ers routinely negotiate discounts off list prices. Airbus showcased sev-eral deals Monday, and on Tuesday announced that Japanese low-cost carrier Peach Aviation signed a firm order for three A320 jets.

Russian economic troubles pre-sented one gray cloud over the stream of contracts, as Aeroflot an-nounced it was canceling an order for Boeing 787 jets. Boeing CEO Ray Conner acknowledged Russia is “a tough market right now” and said details of the cancellation are still being negotiated, but insisted that his company would find other

customers for the plane. The conflict in Ukraine and

resulting sanctions have hit the Rus-sian economy, and limited Russia’s presence at this year’s Paris Air Show. While Airbus executives pre-dict high demand for jumbo jets like the A380 to serve growing megaci-ties, Conner had an opposite view, calling that “a limited market.”

“We believe the world continues to fragment,” he said. “Nobody wants to hub up, gather and go off from there.” Boeing is forecasting demand for 38,050 airplanes over the next 20 years, and says 26,730 of those will be single-aisle jets.

Airbus projects that 32,600 new planes worth a total of $4.9 trillion will be needed by 2034. Conner said the lower oil price this year isn’t dampening demand for more fuel-efficient models like the 737MAX series. Lower fuel costs save airlines money, and “when air-lines make money they tend to buy aircraft, which is a great thing.”

The Paris show alternates years with Britain’s Farnborough Air Show as Europe’s premier industry event. Top military officials join CEOs and some 300,000 visitors at the event, which runs through June 21. (ap)

CAIRO — An Egyptian court has upheld a life sentence for ousted Isla-mist President Mohammed Morsi and confirmed death sentences against 16 others over charges of conspiring with foreign groups, including the Palestin-ian militant group Hamas.

James didn’t blink after Game 5 when he declared he was not only the top player on seven continents, but prepared to raise his game. “We’ve got enough to win it,” he said. “I feel confident.”

But so are the Warriors, and James’ bravado — and his preposterous post-season statistics aside — won’t matter if Curry, who found his stroke a few games back in Quicken Loans Arena, shoots the way he did in Sunday night’s 104-91 win. Curry scored 17 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter, when he answered every one of James’ big baskets with stunning buckets of his own as the game’s two biggest stars played a finals version of “H-O-R-S-E” to the delight of millions of TV viewers and a sonic crowd inside Oracle Arena.

Curry showed why he was the league’s MVP this season, setting the Warriors up to take home the shimmer-ing Larry O’Brien Trophy. Curry was treated for dehydration after Game 5, but he’s expected to be fully recovered as the Warriors try to finish the Cavs. “We fought hard all year and put our-selves in good position now to go to Cleveland and hopefully close it out,” Curry said. “We’re confident.”

James stands in Golden State’s way, and clearly intends to do everything in his power to force Game 7. It’s unfathomable to think James can give any more

than he already has, but he has no choice. “I don’t put a ceiling on what I’m capable of doing,” he said. “I know I’m shouldering a lot of the burden, but it is what it is.”

After a 40-point, 14-rebound, 11-assist performance, he’s averaging 36.6 points, 12.5 rebounds and 8.8 assists — a mind-boggling statistical line never before seen in finals history. James is doing it all with All-Stars Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love recover-ing from postseason surgeries, spark-ing debate about whether he deserves to be the finals MVP — win or lose. Jerry West (1969) is the only player to win MVP honors for a losing team. “He sets the pace,” said Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. “He’s doing what defenses give him and he’s playing smart.” Smart and sublime may not be enough.

Cleveland’s supporting cast isn’t pulling its weight. The Cavs got early baskets from J.R. Smith in Game 5, but the streaky shooter didn’t score in the last 33 minutes. Guards Iman Shumpert and Matthew Del-lavedova went a combined 5 of 18 and were tentative with the ball.

Cavs coach David Blatt matched Golden S t a t e

coach Steve Kerr’s smaller starting lineup in Game 5, electing to play center Timofey Mozgov for just nine minutes after the 7-footer scored 28 points with 10 rebounds in Game 4. Blatt was defensive about his deci-sion, snapping that he did what he felt necessary.

“Did I make a mistake?” asked Blatt, who had James at center for long stretches and didn’t indicate he’ll change for Game 6. “I felt that the best

chance for us to stay in the game and to have a chance to

win was to play it the way that we

played it.” (ap)

Suzuki team-mates Aleix Espargaro and Mav-erick Vinales blamed the lack of a seamless shift gearbox for their poor starts from the front row in MotoGP’s Catalunya Grand Prix at Barcelona. The pair claimed a breakthrough one-two in qualifying - Suzuki’s first pole since 2007 - but both riders were swamped by the time they reached the first corner, immediately dropping to the foot of the top 10.

“I had a very good start, but here in Catalunya the first corner is very far from the startline and we lack in acceleration,” said Espargaro. “As soon as I clicked into second gear I started losing positions be-cause of our normal shift, instead of the seamless shift systems used by our factory rivals.”

Suzuki is the only fac-tory team now running without a seamless shift gearbox, with Aprilia joining Honda, Yamaha and Ducati in using the system from the previous event at Mugello. Vinales, who finished sixth, was sure Suzuki had the pace to stay near the front had it started better. “I’m disappointed be-cause looking at the timesheet I notice that I ran the same pace-time that other factory riders did,” he said.

“Therefore maybe if I could be more effective in accelera-tion after the start I could have been fighting for the podium. “I got passed by so many riders in the first corner and I had to struggle a lot to overtake and recover.”

The team - on the seventh race of its comeback tour after leaving MotoGP in 2011 - brought an engine upgrade to the Spanish Grand Prix, after losing as much as 0.6s on the long straight in the previous round at Mugello. Espargaro managed to get back to fourth place before falling with five laps to go. (net)

LONDON - Defending cham-pion Grigor Dimitrov was locked at one set all with American Sam Querrey in the first round of the Queen’s club Wimbledon warm-up tournament when bad light ended play on Monday.

The 24-year-old Bulgarian, seeded sixth, was outgunned by 2010 Queen’s champion Querrey in the first set and fell a break down in the second before rediscovering his touch to level a match which will be completed on Tuesday. Four-times champion Lleyton He-witt of Australia lost 6-7 7-5 6-2 to South African Kevin Anderson on his 16th and final appearance at Queen’s.

The 34-year-old Hewitt, a for-mer Wimbledon champion, served

for the match in the second set, but Anderson, the world number 17, fought back and will face Nick Kyrgios or Stan Wawrinka in the second round. “This has been one of my favourite tournaments,” Hewitt told reporters.

“I love the whole month in London. I’m going to have so many great memories of this tour-nament.” Third seed Milos Raonic of Canada beat Briton James Ward 5-7 6-3 6-2.

Ward, world number 109, took the first set before Raonic overpow-ered the home favourite to advance. British top seed Andy Murray plays qualifier Lu Yen-hsun of Taiwan and Rafa Nadal faces Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov on Tuesday. (rtr)

Chile would have progressed to the quarterfinals had it won, but still leads Group A with four points along with Bolivia, which defeated Ecuador 3-2 earlier Monday. Mexico has two points after two draws, while Ecuador is last with zero points. Chile, seeking its first Copa America title, is ahead of Bolivia on goal difference.

The top two teams in each of the three groups advance, plus the two-best third-place finishers. Chile’s final group match is against Bolivia on Friday, the same day Mexico faces Ec-uador. Chile had the better of Mexico but defensive mistakes and missed opportunities were costly.

“We are improving match after match and we hope to be at 100 percent against Bolivia, then we will think about reaching higher goals,” said Vidal, who already has three goals after two matches. “We improved a lot, created a lot of chances and attacked from both sides, that was important.”

Vuoso opened the scoring with an easy close-range shot after a set up by Juan Medina in the 21st, and a minute later Vidal equalized with a firm header off a corner.

Mexico went ahead again with Raul Jimenez’s header in the 29th, right after Chile goalkeeper Clau-dio Bravo made a brilliant save off another header by Gerardo Flores. Eduardo Vargas tied the game for the second time with a header off a perfect cross by Vidal in the 42nd.

Vidal was fouled by Flores inside the area, then converted a 55th-minute penalty to give Chile the advantage before Vuoso equalized on a break-away, beating Bravo with a single touch inside the box. “The truth is we played against a strong opponent,” Bravo said.

Just a minute earlier, Chile play-maker Jorge Valdivia had a goal disal-lowed after Vidal was ruled offside in a very close call, and Alexis Sanchez’s goal in the 80th also was called back even though replays showed he was not offside. Chile coach Jorge Sam-paoli was furious on the sidelines.

Valdivia had Chile’s best chance to break the deadlock with a right-footed shot that missed just wide of the left post in the 72nd. Mexico played with-out veteran defender Rafael Marquez, who was injured in the scoreless draw against Bolivia. (ap)

ROME — Three-time Serie A champion Roma is moving ahead with an ambitious 1.5 billion euro ($1.7 billion) plan for a new, pri-vately financed stadium and sur-rounding business and entertain-ment center on the city’s outskirts. Pending government approval, construction will begin by Decem-ber and last up to two years, the club’s American president James Pallotta announced Monday as he handed over a detailed dossier on the project to city authorities.

“If we are going to consistently compete as a top club in the world we need a new stadium, a stadium that is privately owned by AS Roma,” Pallotta said, adding that the entire project will amount to “one of the most important projects in Italy in many, many decades.” With a design inspired by the Colosseum, the stadium will seat 52,500 spectators and be able to expand to 60,000 for major matches.

The site in Tor di Valle is about halfway between downtown and the Leonardo Da Vinci airport. The 125-hectare (300 acre) area will also include a training ground for Roma, three high-rise office

towers, plus parks and commercial and entertainment areas. Costs for the stadium itself are estimated at 300 million euros ($335 million) but the overall price includes surrounding infrastructure and transport.

While some of the financing is expected to come from Roma’s sponsors like Nike, it remains unclear where the other money will come from. “In terms of who wants to invest, we have a substantial list and I’m positive that they wouldn’t like us to name them today,” Pallotta said. “But we don’t feel like we’re going to have an issue at all with the financing of the stadium.”

Slated to open during the 2017-18 season, the stadium has been a big goal since Roma was pur-chased by a four-man group of Boston executives, who in 2011 became the first foreign majority owners of a Serie A club. Pallotta is a minority owner of the Boston Celtics and a hedge-fund manager who runs Raptor Capital Manage-ment.

“If you give me approval tomor-row we’ll find the money tomor-row,” Pallotta said. “We know it’s

a six-month process.” For years, Roma has shared the Stadio Olim-pico with city rival Lazio but that stadium features a running track and poor sightlines for football. The new stadium will be purpose-built for football.

Roma is also hoping that the new facility can help eliminate problems of fan violence and rac-ism that often tarnish matches at the Olimpico. Pallotta has been waging a verbal battle with the club’s hard-core “ultra” fans this season.

“If there’s one thing that has consistently come back to me on dialogues as I walk the streets of Rome, it’s that many people say to me they haven’t felt comfortable taking their children or coming as a family to the stadium,” Pallotta said. “That’s just completely unac-ceptable.

“Whether it’s violence, whether it’s racism or any other issues, I just don’t feel like they should be part of the conversation at the stadium as part of our fan base,” Pallotta said. Roma has finished second in Serie A to Juventus the past two seasons. It last won the league in 2001. (ap)

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Top-ranked Germany beat Thailand 4-0 at the Women’s World Cup on Monday to claim top spot in Group B. The Germans finished top on goal differ-ence ahead of Norway, which beat Ivory Coast 3-1. In Group A, host Canada conceded a late equalizer to draw 1-1 against the Netherlands but still claimed top spot ahead of second-placed China, which advanced after a 2-2 draw against New Zealand, eliminating the Kiwis.

The Netherlands and Thailand finished third in Groups A and B and will be sweating on Tuesday and Wednesday’s results which will determine which four of the six third-placed sides will progress. Ger-many’s Melanie Leupolz scored the opening goal in the 24th minute but the tournament favorite was repeat-edly thwarted by Thai goalkeeper Waraporn Boonsing.

The Germans finally made it 2-0 on Lena Petermann’s header in the 56th minute, and she scored again two minutes later to effectively end the contest. Sara Daebritz later closed the scoring by tapping the ball into an open net. Norway’s Ada Hegerberg scored twice to lead her team to a 3-1 win over Ivory Coast and passage to the knockout stages.

Hegerberg scored the opening goal for Norway in the 6th minute, beating Ivory Coast goalkeeper Cynthia Djo-hore at the near post. Hegerberg added

her second in the 62nd minute, and Solveig Gulbrandsen put Norway up 3-0 in the 67th minute. Ange Nguessan scored a consolation with a booming right-footed blast from well outside the penalty box in the 71st minute.

Netherlands substitute Kirsten Van De Ven scored in the 87th minute and the Dutch earned a 1-1 draw with host Canada. Ashley Lawrence scored early for Canada, but the Dutch were a threat all night with their counterat-tacking game and deserved the late equalizer.

A crowd of 45,420 at Olympic Stadium saw coach John Herdman make four lineup changes looking to boost the potency of a side that had not scored from open play in its first two games. China’s Wang Shanshan scored on a perfectly timed header and the Chinese benefited from a question-able penalty to earn a 2-2 draw against New Zealand.

New Zealand went up 1-0 through Rebekah Ashley Stott in the 28th min-ute, but China drew level after Wang Lisi converted a penalty awarded for handball against Betsy Hassett. The replays showed the ball hit her chest and head.

China went ahead 2-1 on Shan-shan’s goal in the 60th minute. New Zealand equalized five minutes later through Hannah Wilkinson but they could not find the winning goal that would have given the side second place in the group. (ap)

SINGAPORE — Two Southeast Asian Games dynasties were extended Monday when Thailand beat Myanmar 3-0 to claim its 15th football title shortly after the Philippines wrapped up a 17th gold medal in basketball. Defending champion Thailand entered the final after an unbeaten run, scoring 21 goals and conceding one and coming fresh off a 5-0 win over Indonesia.

Myanmar goalkeeper Phyo Kywaw Zin held them at bay with some ex-cellent saves until Kesarat Tanaboon broke the deadlock for Thailand in the 54th minute with a shot from 13 yards after the defenders failed to clear a corner. After having three shots stopped, Thailand forward Pombubpha Chananan finally found the back of the net when he poked a left-foot shot past

the Myanmar keeper in the 64th, and Inpinit Pinyo made it 3-0 in the 78th.

Thailand has won 10 of the last 12 SEA Games tournaments, a run that includes wins over Myanmar in the 1993 and 2007 finals. Coach Promrut Choketawee rated his lineup as the best Thai team to win a SEA Games gold medal and said it had the potential to play at the Olympics and develop into a combination that could take on the biggest teams in Asia. Overcoming the intense pressure of being a regular regional champion was part of the challenge.

“Thank you for the fans — I think now they can celebrate,” he said. “I hope the next SEA Games we can still win gold again.” Myanmar hasn’t won since its golden run of five straight titles

ended in 1973. The Philippines has won all but one of the basketball titles ever contested at the SEA Games, the only break in the sequence occurring in 1989 in Malaysia. On Monday night, Rey Mark Belo had a game-high 22 points to lead the Philippines to a 72-64 win over Indonesia. The latest football title gave Thailand its 93rd gold medal of the games, an unbeatable lead of 10 over Singapore and 20 more than Vietnam with one day of competition remaining. Vietnam won the third-place playoff 5-0 against a deflated Indonesia, which now enters an inter-national ban imposed by FIFA earlier in the month for political interference in the domestic running of the game. Indonesia coach Aji Santoso said it was hard to lift his squad after a 5-0 semifi-

nal loss to Thailand over the weekend, and with the FIFA suspension hanging over their campaign.

“Mentally it had a big influence,” he said, adding that planning for the future was difficult because there’s no limit on Indonesia’s international ban. “Very, very disappointing for the play-ers — they don’t understand what they must do after this event.”

Indonesia was never really in the match after Hasamu Pranata was penalized for a handball in the area in the 13th minute and Vietnam forward Mac Hong Quan struck his spot kick to the left of goalkeeper Amiruddin Teguh. Vo Huy Toan scored in the 21st and 41st minutes with powerful left-foot strikes, and a half-volley from Nguyen Nuu Dung as he ran toward

goal in first-half stoppage time made it 4-0. Vietnam captain Que Ngoc Hai deflected Do Duy Manh’s volley past Amirduddin in the 71st to round off the scoring.

Thailand claimed other gold medals with a 25-18, 25-18, 25-15 win over Vietnam in the women’s volleyball final, a 21-14, 21-10 win over Myan-mar in the sepak takraw team women’s doubles final and an upset 5-4 victory over Singapore in women’s water polo. On the penultimate evening of compe-tition, Singapore held second spot on the medal table with 83 gold medals, followed by Vietnam (73), Malaysia (60), Indonesia (45), Philippines (29), Myanmar (12) and Cambodia (1). Laos, Brunei and East Timor did not top the podium. (ap)

MILAN - AC Milan dismissed manager Filippo Inzaghi on Tues-day after a disappointing season in which the side finished 10th in Serie A and failed to qualify for Europe.

Inzaghi, who spent 10 years at the club as a player, struggled

throughout much of a campaign that brought their lowest number of wins since 2001 and his future had long been questioned.

“AC Milan communicate that Filippo Inzaghi has been discharged of his responsibilities as first team

coach. The club thank him for his work,” the club said in a statement on their website. Serbian Sinisa Mihajlovic, who stepped down as Sampdoria coach earlier this month, is among the favourites to take the job. (ap)

Host Chile held to 3-3 draw by Mexico at Copa America

SANTIAGO — Arturo Vidal scored two goals and set up another, but host Chile was held to a 3-3 draw by Mexico in a thrilling Copa America match on Monday. Striker Vicente Matias Vuoso scored twice for Mexico, including the 66th-minute equalizer that frustrated a home crowd which was also angered by the referee’s decision to disallow two Chile goals on contentious offside calls.

(ap)

“I ’ve go t to be better,”

James said. Even that might not be enough. Ste-phen Curry

and the Golden State Warriors are

one win from a gold-en trophy.Up 3-2 in a scintillat-

i n g series loaded with subplots and strategy, the Warriors can win their first title since 1975 on Tuesday night with a win in Game 6.

(rtr)

Judge Shaaban al-Shami issued the ruling, which can be appealed, on Tuesday. He is expected to rule later Tuesday on an earlier death sentence handed to Morsi over a mass prison

break during the 2011 uprising. The 16 defendants whose death

sentences were upheld include three senior members of Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood group. The other 13 were tried in absentia. Morsi was among 17 defendants sentenced to life in prison.

Last year, a powerful explosion heard hun-dreds of kilometers (miles) away destroyed villages around its slopes and killed at least 17 people.

villagers in the main danger zone, which stretches 7 kilometers (4 miles) to the south and southeast of the peak, to move to the tem-porary shelters, but have faced resistance.

(afp)

(kmb)

(ant)

lose revenue.

(kmb34)

(kmb36)

Monday the incident happened about a month ago and he was able to fix the damaged mirror himself.

BOSTON — Actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson says he sideswiped a truck while filming his latest movie in Massachusetts.

“The impact (of the surge in tourist visits—Ed) is significant, especially in tourism facilities, such as hotels and restaurants, as indicated by the increase in the vol-ume of garbage produced everyday: between 252 tons to 275 tons,” said Putu Eka Merthawan, Head of DKP Badung.

The volume of garbage pro-duced, said Merthawan, only in-creases in hotels and restaurants,

while the volume produced by the general public remains about the same. “The amount of road side garbage remains stable with a daily average of about 10 tons. This is because travelers tend not to litter,” he said.

In order to cope with the surge in the volume of garbage during peak season, the DKP performs garbage pick-up three times a day. “We ap-ply special measures to cope with

the increase of garbage that occurs during peak tourist season, includ-ing dispatching DKP personnel to pick up and transport garbage away from tourist centres like Kuta, three times a day, so that garbage is not seen to be piling up on the streets,” he explained.

Chairman of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (IHRA) -Badung Chapter, IGN Rai Suryawijaya, commented that domestic tourist arrivals to Badung County are constantly increasing -at a rate of about 10-15 percent.

“Currently hotel occupancy rates have increased from 60 percent to about 70 percent due to the start of

the school holidays for domestic travelers. Typically foreign travel-ers start arriving en mass starting in July and August (also known as “summer” in the northern hemi-sphere),” he said.

According to Suryawijaya, the surge of domestic travelers will be most felt by hotel operators running three star hotels, city hotels, villas, budget hotels and cottages: “Only a small percent-age of travelers coming from Jakarta, Surabaya and Java stay in five-star hotel”.

He added that the trend of tour-ists’ visits to Bali -especially to Ba-dung has been increasing by about

14 percent every year. “Unfortu-nately, the number of accommoda-tions such as hotels, condotels and villas has increased by 20 percent. This is hazardous to the industry because it can result in price wars because the supply is not in line with the demand,” he concluded. (kmb27/pun/iah)
