Starring Chris Hemsworth, the Marvel superhero sequel earned $109.4 million when it opened inter-nationally last weekend and $94 mil-lion internationally this weekend.

“It’s an extraordinary thing,” said Dave Hollis, executive vice president of distribution at Walt Disney Studios. “These guys at Marvel have been some of the most consistent when it comes to making movies and creating big events that drive a ton of people to

the movie theater. They overdelivered on expectations.” However, some ob-servers were expecting the weekend total to reach over $100 million.

In limited theaters Thursday eve-ning, “Thor: The Dark World” brought in $7.1 million overnight.

Surpassing the ticket sales of “Thor,” which scored $65.7 million when it opened in May of 2011, “Thor: The Dark World” marks a record for a Disney November open-

ing, topping the $70.5 million “The Incredibles” earned in 2004. But, come Nov. 22, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” is predicted to take the No. 1 spot.

“We have a great little stretch of time prior to ‘Hunger Games,’ “ Hollis said. “Yes, ‘Hunger Games’ will do a whole bunch of business, but that’s not to say we don’t expect to still be a relevant option for consumers that weekend and onto the Thanksgiving weekend that follows.”

“At least, a thousand people have registered to participate. This activity is designed with the nuance of sport tourism, so they will be doing the half-marathon run under the full moonlight,” said the Secre-tary of Bali Sporty, BPPD Bali, IB Wedanta Wijaya, in Denpasar.

activity entitled Run under the Stars promised a unique and impressive experience of the race for the par-ticipants especially intended for non-athlete whose number com-monly dominated similar run events in various foreign countries.

“Almost 90 percent of the par-ticipants taking part will be tourists,

while the remaining is athlete such as the elite runners from Kenya and Ethiopia. They are interested in joining this event because the marathon held at night is the first of its kind in Indonesia,” he said.

Tourism Policy Maker Council of the BPPD Bali, Ngurah Wijaya, said the activity posed the first step. His party would like to combine the tourism and sport activity by mak-ing cooperation with the Indonesian National Sport Committee (KONI) of Bali Chapter.

“This activity is synergized with tourism promotion program, so it will be in line with the program of

the tourism and economic creative ministry. Surely, the implementa-tion would be spread so that the growth of tourism is not only fo-cused in Southern Bali,” he said.

According to him, all sporting activities packaged as a tourism promotion would be organized during low season of tourist ar-rival. This attempt was intended to cover the slack tourist arrivals in the season.

“We focus the activities on low season where there is a drop in tour-ist arrival. To that end, each event organized is expected to cover the downturn occurred,” he said.

Chairman of the BPPD Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Suka-wati, earlier said that his party had formed a Sport Division to focus on targeting sportsmen as the target market. However, he asked that any sporting event held should not deviate from cultural tourism. “Bali tourism must remain to be rooted in cultural tourism,” he said.

He added that BPPD Bali aimed at targeting markets that could be packed in a fixed context to cultural tourism. The market share of sport got special attention because this share could be processed and managed within the remit of the culture. (kmb27)

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

previous year, the celebration of Heroes’ Day in Bangli County was filled with rally and pilgrimage im-plementation to Memorial Park at Penglipuran, Bangli, Sunday (Nov 10). Installation of the red-and-white flags since the day before was refer-ring to the circular of the Regent of Bangli Made Gianyar requiring all the structural officials in Bangli County to put up flag in the size agreed upon. It was intended to promote the nationalism of Bangli community.

Deputy Regent of Bangli, Sang Nyoman Sedana Arta, amid the cel-ebration stated that Heroes’ Day fall-ing every November 10 posed one of the evidences that current young generation would never forget the services extended by the past great heroes. Sedana Arta expected that

younger generation could appreciate the struggle of our national heroes. “As young generation, we must live the struggle of our heroes how bit-terly they repelled the invaders out of our country,” he affirmed.

He added that to continue the struggle of the heroes, the youths should no longer fight against the invaders with sharpened bamboo, but through their contribution in the development. “Indonesia needs heroes of development. Aside from ceremonial event, the celebration was also filled with the laying of wreaths and flower sprinkle at the Penglipuran Memo-rial Park as well as the delivery of basic food aid to veterans presented by Deputy Regent of Bangli. Such condition could be found in the subak areas at Dangin Tukadaya village, Jem-brana County. Most of the paddy plants collapsed as being hacked by rains. The ready-to-harvest paddies collapsed and submerged in water. Farmers worried if the condition con-tinued their paddy plants would turn damaged. As consequence, it would have an impact on the

price at the harvest time. Actu-ally, the harvest time was just waiting for the right time.

Many paddy plants col-lapsed at Dangin Tukadaya, reaching nearly one hectare and the location was spread. Ketut Tarma, one of local residents, said if the paddy would soon be harvested. However, due to recent heavy rains they col-lapsed and submerged in water.

He believed the selling price for the collapsed paddies would reduce though they could still be harvested.

If they were neglected any longer, the fallen paddies would rot so farmers would harvest theirs earlier. “Rather than being damaged, it must be harvested though the price will be beyond the expectation,” ex-plained the resident. (kmb26)

Mangupura (Bali Post)—Police are urged to tighten security

in Kuta tourist area. It is responding to the public concern about the rising crime rate particularly snatching in the local area.

“Snatching action increases sharply in the Samigita (Seminyak, Legian and Kuta) area. Almost every day there are snatching cases against travelers using motor vehicle,” said a legislator of the Badung House from Legian, I Wayan Puspa Negara, Sunday (Nov 10).

He said the snatching action was very disturbing to society. Moreover, the snatchers committed the crimes unabashedly so that it claimed many victims, especially causing tourists to get injured. Some prone areas to snatching were the areas mostly vis-ited by tourists wishing to enjoy the

nightlife. Snatching action was often committed around 11:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m.

Puspa Negara judged the rampant snatching emerged due to lack of police’s ability in performing surveil-lance. Although police had worked hard, Puspa still urged the officers to intensify the patrols. This problem should be immediately addressed. Otherwise, such condition was feared to tarnish the image of Kuta tourist destination. Besides, the program of zero crime in the local area could not be realized.

“I strongly deplore this condi-tion. Hopefully, the Kuta Police could do patrol more intensively and aggressively as well as perform a raid in the snatching-prone areas,” he said. (kmb25)

ESA said the satellite re-en-tered the atmosphere at about

0000 GMT Monday on a de-scending orbit pass that extended across Siberia, the western Pacific Ocean, the eastern Indian Ocean and Antarctica.

ESA says “as expected, the satellite disintegrated in the high atmosphere and no damage to property has been reported.

The Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer, or GOCE, was launched in 2009 to map the Earth’s gravitational field.

ESA says its information is being used to understand ocean circulation, sea level, ice dynam-ics and the Earth’s interior.

It’s been gradually descending over the last three weeks after running out of fuel Oct. 21.


WASHINGTON — A power-ful typhoon hit the Philippines on Friday and moved out to the South China Sea:

HURRICANE? CYCLONE? TYPHOON? They’re all the same, officially tropical cyclones. But they just use distinctive terms for a storm in different parts of the world. Hurricane is used in the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, central and northeast Pacific. They are typhoons in the northwest Pacific. In the Bay of Bengal and the Ara-bia Sea, they are called cyclones. Tropical cyclone is used in the southwest India Ocean; in the southwestern Pacific and south-eastern India Ocean they are severe tropical cyclones.

STRENGTH: A storm gets a name and is considered a tropi-cal storm at 39 mph (63 kph). It becomes a hurricane, typhoon, tropical cyclone, or cyclone at 74 mph (119 kph). There are five strength categories, depending on wind speed. The highest category is 5 and that’s above 155 mph (249 kph). Australia has a differ-ent system for categorizing storm strength.

ROTATION: If they are north of the equator they rotate clock-wise. If they are south, they rotate counter-clockwise.

SEASON: The Atlantic and central Pacific hurricane seasons are June 1 through Nov. 30. Eastern Pacific: May 15 to Nov. 30; north-western Pacific season is close to

all year, with the most from May to November. The cyclone season in the south Pacific and Australia runs from November to April. The Bay of Bengal has two seasons April to June and September to November.

WHERE IS THE BUSIEST PLACE? The northwestern Pacific where Typhoon Haiyan has just hit. A normal year there involves 27 named storms. Haiyan is the 28th named storm and there has already been a 29th. By comparison the Atlantic averages 11 named storms a year and this year there have been 12, none of them causing major problems.

WHO DECIDES THE NAMES? The lists are maintained by the World Meteorological Organiza-tion; the names are ones that are familiar in each region. Names are taken off the list and replaced to avoid confusion if a hurricane causes a lot of damage or deaths. For example, Katrina was retired after it devastated New Orleans in 2005. The Philippines has its own naming system, so Typhoon Hai-yan is also being called Yolanda.

HOW DOES EL NINO AF-FECT STORMS? During an El Nino — when the central Pacific is warming — there are fewer Atlantic storms. El Ninos shift where storms form, but not the number, for the northwest Pacific and the southwest Pacific. The central Pacific gets more storms during El Nino and the year after. This year has neither an El Nino nor its opposite, a La Nina. It is a neutral year.

the adjacent area is exhausted,” he explained.

Other than installation of break-waters, Mangku also mentioned the taking of beach sand also helped aggravate the abrasion. Meanwhile, the government could only build safeguard in the abraded beach without making a strict rule on the prohibition of taking beach sand.

“The solution is the same as constructing breakwaters. After constructing breakwaters, it will cause abrasion at another location. This happens constantly because the solution of beach problems in Bali is not performed holistically,” he concluded. (kmb32)

in cooperation with the Indonesian foreign affairs ministry, will or-ganize the ASEAN Meeting on Protection of Witnesses and Victims of Transnational Crimes in Bali, on November 12-13, 2013.

The meeting is a follow-up of the Joint Statement on Interna-tional Cooperation on Protection of Witnesses and Victims of Trans-national Organized Crimes issued at an international conference organized in Bali on June 13, 2012, LPSK Deputy Chairperson Lies Sulistiani said on Monday.

“The conference’s participants praised Indonesia’s initiative on the need to follow-up the conference’s statement by establishing a regional network to strengthen international cooperation in the protection of witnesses and victims of transnational organized crimes,” she said.

The upcoming meeting in Bali is to be participated in by repre-sentatives of 10 ASEAN member countries, namely Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Singapore, Bru-nei Darussalam, and Indonesia. Representatives from Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste are also invited to attend the meeting.

The Bali conference in 2012 was attended by law enforcement officials from 30 countries.

The LPSK signed a memorandum of understanding on the protection for witnesses and victims with the International Organization for Migra-tion (IOM) and the National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT).

Police guarded stores to prevent people from hauling off food, water and such non-essentials as TVs and treadmills, but there was often no one to carry away the dead — not even those seen along the main road from the airport to Tacloban, the worst-hit city along the country’s remote eastern seaboard.

At a small naval base, eight bloated corpses — including that of a baby — were submerged in sea water brought in by the storm. Officers there had yet to move them, saying they had no body bags or electricity to preserve them.

Two officials said Sunday that Friday’s typhoon may have killed

10,000 or more people, but with the slow pace of recovery, the official death toll remained well below that. The Philippine military confirmed 942 dead, but shattered communica-tions, transportation links and local governments indicate that the final toll will take days to be known. Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said “we pray” that the death toll is less than 10,000.

Tacloban resembled a garbage dump from the air, punctuated only by a few concrete buildings that remained standing.

“I don’t believe there is a single structure that is not destroyed or se-verely damaged in some way — every

single building, every single house,” U.S. Marine Brig. Gen. Paul Kennedy said after taking a helicopter flight over the city. He spoke on the tarmac at the airport, where two Marine C-130 cargo planes were parked, engines running, unloading supplies.

Authorities said at least 2 mil-lion people in 41 provinces were affected by Haiyan, one of the most powerful recorded typhoons to ever hit land and likely the deadliest natural disaster to beset this poor Southeast Asian nation.

Philippine soldiers were distrib-uting food and water in Tacloban, and assessment teams from the United Nations and other inter-national agencies were seen for the first time. The U.S. military dispatched food, water, generators and a contingent of Marines to the city, the first outside help in what will swell into a major international relief mission.

The rebels, one of many armed groups operating in the mineral-rich but impoverished east of the DR Congo, have been routed by the national army, who are backed by a 3,000-strong special United Nations intervention brigade. Allegedly supported by neigh-bouring Rwanda and Uganda but seemingly abandoned by their sponsors due to international pressure, the M23 announced last week that their 18-month insurgency was over. They are expected to put this in writing in Uganda on Monday.

“Our hope is that we have a firm commitment from the M23 rebels to renounce their use of arms,” said DR Congo govern-ment spokesman Lambert Mende. The M23, a mainly ethnic-Tutsi force who mutinied from the Con-golese army, have not confirmed Monday’s meeting. But with no more military leverage they are seen as having little room for manoeuvre.

The agreement is expected to settle the fate of about 1,500 M23 fighters who have crossed into Uganda and are languishing in

camps along the border. Uganda has refused to hand them over to the DR Congo.

Around 100 more injured rebels have crossed to Rwanda. Mende said the rebels would be dealt with “case by case” -- with many rank-and-file fight-ers expected to be given the op-tion to return to the army. More complicated is the fate of around 100 M23 commanders. These include M23 leader Sultani Mak-enga, accused of participating in several massacres, mutilations, abductions and sexual violence, sometimes against children.

“The rebels, by signing, will effectively be surrendering. From our side, even though we have won and triumphed, we will still respect what is on the table,” said Francois Muamba, a DR Congo delegate to the talks. The UN’s special envoy to the Great Lakes, Mary Robinson, told AFP the ac-cord would be “a very important step for peace”.

Speaking to AFP on Sunday, she said the deal will also be fol-lowed by operations to neutralise other rebel groups in a concerted effort to end one of Africa’s most brutal and longest-running wars.


“We condemn the summoning and arrest of some of our members and demand to stop them imme-diately,” said the Ramallah-based Fatah party, which was founded by Arafat and is now headed by Pales-tinian president Mahmud Abbas.

Arafat died in Paris on Novem-ber 11, 2004 at 75 after falling sick a

month earlier. Doctors were unable to specify the cause of death and no post-mortem was carried out at the time.

Palestinian society has long given currency to the rumour that he was murdered, and following the findings of Swiss scientists which “moderately” supported the notion Arafat was poisoned, Palestinian officials openly accused Israel of

“assassinating” him. Israel flatly denies killing Arafat.

Its statement on Sunday, Fatah also called on Hamas “to end the division and achieve national unity” and appealed for it to reverse its ban on the commemoration of Arafat, “the symbol of Palestine and all lib-eration movements in the world”.

But Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri blamed Fatah for thwart-

ing efforts of his Islamist movement to hold a joint ceremony.

Fatah “insisted it should be only a Fatah ceremony” and decided to not attend a joint meeting that would determine the factional representa-tives of a memorial ceremony, he wrote on his Facebook page.

Tensions between the two sides have been high since 2006, when Hamas trounced Abbas’ long-domi-

nant Fatah in Palestinian legislative elections, and boiled over into vi-cious street battles between gunmen from both sides later that year.

The ferocity of the violence shocked Palestinians, splitting them into rival camps and the occupied territories into two separate entities, with Hamas unchallenged in Gaza and Abbas’s power base limited to the West Bank.

“Almost 90 percent of the par-ticipants taking part will be tourists, while the remaining is athlete such as the elite runners from Kenya and Ethiopia. They are interested

in joining this event because the marathon held at night is the first of its kind in Indonesia,” he said.


“This activity is synergized with tourism promotion program, so it will be in line with the program of the tourism and economic creative ministry. Surely, the implementa-

tion would be spread so that the growth of tourism is not only fo-cused in Southern Bali,” he said.

A number of residents of Puraja hamlet, Peninjoan village, Tembuku, complained as the clean water provided by the Mu-nicipality Waterworks (PDAM) of Bangli had not flowed to their homes nearly for a month. Such condition made them difficult to get clean water service in meeting their daily needs. Residents threatened to rally to the PDAM office if the water problem in the region could not be resolved.

One of the Puraja residents, Suyasa, said on Sunday (Nov 10) that in truth there had been clean water service by Municipality Waterworks at Puraja hamlet. However, the allotment for local residents was set once a week every Wednesday. However, since the past three weeks the water had not been running so that it made the residents distraught. Moreover, it also occurred on last Galungan and Kuningan feast day. Residents got difficulty in preparing a number of needs related to the feast day because the water flow of the Municipal Waterworks did not work.

Similar complaint was also revealed by hamlet chief of Puraja, Ketut Rukun. He said that actually many large springs were available at Puraja hamlet managed by PDAM. However, many of those springs were drained to villages underneath Puraja.

Despite having many springs, Puraja hamlet did not get any privi-leges. In contrast, Puraja hamlet should be patient to face the clean water crisis overwhelming the region. Since the water flow of the PDAM had not worked for long enough and occurred repeatedly, some people were planning to come to PDAM Bangli to express their aspirations related to the matter on Monday.

He added that individually local residents had frequently enough conveyed such condition to PDAM. Nevertheless, their aspirations were just accepted but never received a serious response from the PDAM. Residents alleged if the water that had not flowed nearly for a month happened due to injustice management. A number of informa-tion told if several other villages were given priority with full service by the PDAM.

So far, to resolve the problem, the residents who had cistern at their home were forced to purchase water from tank truck. Meanwhile, the others who did not have cistern should fight to get clean water by taking it directly to springs and existing rivers. (ina)

A number of contractors in Bule-leng County are pessimistic if the road repair program launched by Regent Putu Agus Suradnyana in 2014 can run thoroughly. Although the county government set up a fund of IDR 90 billion, the supporting factors to complete the program in one year are very limited.

Based on information from a number of contractors in Buleleng on Sunday (Nov 10), the fund worth IDR 90 billion budgeted for the road improvement in 2014 was ascer-tained not to be entirely absorbed. It happened because the supporting factors to work on the hot-mix road in Buleleng were still very limited. The Asphalt Mixing Plant (AMP) in Buleleng only amounted to two units. Even in Bali, there were only about five factories. Meanwhile, the hot-mix roadwork was not only carried out in Buleleng, but also in other counties in Bali. “It does not

include the other projects financed by regional budget for national road,” said a contractor.

In addition, almost no contractor in Buleleng was capable of doing the hot-mix road. Aside from security assurance, the labor and hot-mix support, the risk of loss was very large in the hot-mix roadwork. When relying on the contractor from outside Bali, the failure factor was huge. It was proved by the presence of a number of contractors from outside Bali that had been blacklisted because they neglected their project construction in Buleleng in 2013. “If contractors from outside Bali win a tender, they must also be supported by AMP of Bali and it is very dif-ficult to obtain,” he said.

Chairman of the Indonesian National Construction Association (Gapensi) of Buleleng Chapter, Nyoman Suasana aka Jenggo, when asked for his opinion expressed that he was very pessimistic if the road improvement project with a

budget of IDR 90 billion could run. According to him, the intention of regent to establish hot-mix road in short time to villages was good, but it should be taken into account the supporting factors, such as the availability of hot-mix and ability of local contractors.

Jenggo said almost no local contractors could participate in the tender of hot-mix asphalt road con-struction. If there was a large con-tractor, according to him, it would think twice to take the project due to limited supporting factors such as human resources, equipment and materials in the form of hot-mix. “For the time being, a number of rural roads should be allowed to apply fried asphalt first, so local contractors can get a job,” he said.

In the meantime, a contractor, Made Suarnawa alias Dek Mi, also expressed his pessimism that hot-mix road construction project could be completed thoroughly as the expecta-tion of the regent in 2014. (kmb15)

The Gelang Agung temple cat-egorized into dang kahyangan (sanctum to venerate a sage) lo-cated at Buangga Hamlet, Getasan Village, Petang Subdistrict, is not only considered as a sanctum by local community, but also as one of the cultural heritage cornerstones. Many cultural relics originating from thirteenth century were dis-covered in the temple.

Various stories arose concerning with the temple naming located amidst the paddy fields being far from residential areas. However, the naming is inseparable from the discovery of yellowish bronze

bracelets sizing large enough. It is said the bracelet was found in the temple area. Other than bracelets, it was also found a small bronze bracelet scattered around the tem-ple. Unfortunately, none of those bracelets are now left.

Priest of the Gelang Agung temple, I Made Terum and priest of Dalem Temple of Buangga I Ketut Malen said their predecessors frequently showed off those objects. Unfortunately, they had disappeared somewhere. Now, the existence of those objects was unknown, includ-ing the preliminary evidence of the temple establishment. Surround-ing communities only referred to ancient stories.

In the temple was also found some perforated coins wrapped in leaves when an excavation was made. Oddly, said a community leader, Made Ngaceng, the eryth-rina leaf used to wrap the coins was still fresh. Those perforated coins were found during an excavation by residents and the officers of the Antiquities Reserve, Archaeo-logical Agency for Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara Region in 1997.

Except for bronze bracelets and perforated coins, according to the story, it was also found a temple mound measuring one square meter when the temple was first discovered. Afterward, the mound

was excavated. As a result, it was discovered various kinds of statues. Allegedly, some relicts were still kept under the temple.

Few relics excavated have now been placed in Gedong Arca. There are a statue of Lord Vishnu riding Garuda (eagle), phallus, a statue resembling lotus flower comprising three sections with octagonal base, the center of three-tiered rectan-gular frame, and circular pinnacle surrounded by sculpture resembling a lotus leaf. When viewing the phal-lus building next to it, it is likely a symbol of yoni. If both symbols are combined, then they symbol-ize fertility. There is also a relic of Padmasana shrine whose headboard

is inscribed with Balinese script and a few fragments of the buildings are made of stone, while fragment of the building is rectangle.

Chief of Buangga customary village, IGN Arnawa, stated that local community truly hoped the government to pay attention to the temple existence. He assessed the government’s attention so far was very minimal associated with physical condition of the temple and cultural relics retained inside the temple.

Meanwhile, various magical stories accompanied the existence of the Gelang Agung temple. One of them mentioned that in the past many juwuk linglang oranges grew around the temple and it was believed to have capability of reviv-ing the dead. Similarly, turmeric was said to grow in the temple area where if harvested it would turn into gold. However, if it was taken home it would no longer be gold. “So far, we have a real experience where the food during the ceremony in the temple never turns stale despite being left for many days,” Ngaceng said.

Jro Mangku Terum explained the structure of the Gelang Agung temple was not much different from other sanctum in general in Bali. It had a two-tiered meru shrine used to venerate Goddess Sri. In the temple also occurred a chamber to venerate Danghyang Dwijendra. In certain seasons, especially when the paddy plant belonging to residents of Buangga and surrounding resi-dents was attacked by diseases, they would come to pray to the temple and beg salvation. Meanwhile, pi-odalan or anniversary of the temple fell on Buda (Wednesday) Umanis Julungwangi. (kmb)

BEIJING - China will open its state-owned firms to greater investment by private companies, a state-run newspaper reported Monday, as media ramp up expectations from a top Communist Party meeting on economic reforms.

According to the China Daily, private partners will be allowed to take 10 to 15 percent stakes in the country’s state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

The move would give such companies or inves-tors a bigger say in decision-making, it quoted officials of the state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) as saying. The agency is a powerful body that oversees large SOEs collectively worth trillions of dollars, many of which enjoy monopolies in key sectors such as rail and energy.

The change appears to differ from existing partial flotations of SOEs where China’s big four state-owned banks are all quoted in Hong Kong and other overseas markets, as are units of oil gi-ants Sinopec, CNOOC and CNPC, several subsid-iaries of conglomerate China Resources, telecom behemoths China Mobile and China Unicom, and scores of other entities.

But partnerships are rare, with the China Daily noting the “rare exception” of a 2003 deal that handed private industrial conglomerate Fosun Group 49 percent ownership in a joint venture with state-run China National Medicine Corp.

“All kinds of companies could join SOE re-structuring,” the China Daily quoted Bai Yingzi, director of SASAC’s enterprise reform division as saying.

The report came on the third day of a four-day gathering known as the Third Plenum at which leaders of the ruling Communist party are ex-pected to draw up a decade-long blueprint for the world’s second-largest economy.

The highly-anticipated meeting, which is being held at a heavily-secured Beijing hotel, has been used in the past by China’s leaders as a launching pad for economic reforms.

But despite much raising of expectations by state-run media, analysts say that China is unlikely to embark on major reforms or privatisation of state firms, and that any reforms unveiled after the plenum will likely be limited to broad outlines rather than detailed policy changes.

The China Daily report said that “specific plans on SOE reforms are expected to be drafted after the third plenum”.

In a major report issued in March, the Organisa-tion for Economic Cooperation and Development said that China’s progress on economic liberalisa-tion had stalled since 2008.

Aside from opening up state-owned enterprises, other topics expected to be taken up at the four-day meeting include land and administrative reforms as well as changes to China’s residency registra-tion system.

The wind farm near the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant is to eventually have a generation capac-ity of 1 gigawatt from 143 turbines, though its significance is not limited to the energy it will produce. Symboli-cally, the turbines will help restore the role of energy supplier to a region decimated by a population exodus following the multiple meltdowns triggered by the March 2011 earth-quake and tsunami.

“Many people were victimized and hurt by the accident at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant, so it is very meaningful to have a new source of energy — renewable energy — based here,” said Kazuyoshi Akaba, a vice minister of economy, trade and industry, after the turbine was turned on.

“It is the government’s mission to ensure this project is a success,” he said. The project also highlights Japan’s aspirations to sell its advanced energy technology around the globe.

Trading houses such as Mar-ubeni Corp., which is leading the consortium building the offshore wind farm, are investing aggres-sively in renewable energy as well as conventional sources, helped by government policies aimed at nurturing favored industries.All of

“I favor renewables. But it would be irresponsible to create a pie-in-the-sky claim that renewables alone are the answer,” said Paul Scalise, a fellow at Tokyo University and expert on Japan’s energy industry. “There is no such thing as a perfect power source.”

He cites figures showing wind power’s average generating capacity at 2 watts per square meter versus 20 watts per square meter for solar power — and 1,000 watts per square meter for nuclear.

“We are moving ahead one step at a time. This wind farm is a symbol of our future,” Sato said.


Malé (Maldives) - A political crisis deepened in the Maldives Monday when parliament’s speaker warned caretaker president Mohamed Waheed that his mandate had expired after the country failed to hold elections on time.

Speaker Abdulla Shahid, who is linked to the opposition Maldivian Demo-cratic Party (MDP), told Waheed that he had no right to govern because his time in office had lapsed under the terms of the constitution.

The country’s controversial Supreme Court postponed a run-off presiden-tial vote which could have elected a president on Sunday, a move slammed by the United States and likely to draw further international criticism.

“There is no other provision for extending the period of office of the president,” the speaker said in a letter to Waheed.

He also informed other branches of the state that Waheed was no longer able to exercise the powers of a president.

When it blocked the run-off vote on Sunday, the Supreme Court said Waheed could continue to hold office until a run-off election is held on November 16, five days after his term should have ended Monday.

The court, dominated by judges named during 30 years of autocratic rule by former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, has blocked three attempts to elect a new leader for the Sunni Muslim nation of 350,000 people.

Mohamed Nasheed, the country’s first democratically elected president who was ousted in February last year, is the frontrunner to return to power. He has accused the court and Waheed of deliberately blocking him.

He secured nearly 47 percent of the vote in a first-round vote on Saturday, compared with just under 30 percent for his nearest rival Abdulla Yameen, the half brother of Gayoom.

The United States accused the Supreme Court of “unduly” interfering in the democratic process by postponing the runoff, five years after the Indian Ocean islands introduced multi-party democracy for the first time.

“Efforts by the Supreme Court to repeatedly and unduly interfere in the electoral process subverts Maldives’ democracy and takes decision-making out of the hands of the people,” the US embassy to the Maldives and Sri Lanka said Sunday. On Sunday night Waheed vowed he would not step down despite increasing opposition calls for him to go.

“The president assured the public that he will resign on the 16th (after the run-off election) and will not accept any further delays to the elections,” Waheed’s spokesman Masood Imad told AFP.

Nasheed resigned in February 2012 following demonstrations and a mutiny by security forces which he denounced as a coup engineered by Waheed and former strongman Gayoom. Despite the political uncertainty, the streets of Male were calm on Monday.


MOSCOW — A Russian space capsule carrying the Sochi Olympic torch and three astronauts returned to Earth on Monday from the International Space Station in a flawless landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan.

The Soyuz capsule landed at 8:49 local time (0249 GMT), about three and a half hours after undocking from the station with Russian Fyodor Yurchikhin, American Karen Nyberg and Luca Parmitano of Italy aboard.

The unlit Olympic torch was brought to the ISS on Thursday when three new crew members arrived. Two Russian crew members took it on a spacewalk Saturday. The capsule descended through brilliantly clear skies under a parachute. Yurchikhin, the mission commander, was extracted from the capsule within about 10 minutes of touchdown and carried to a reclining chair, where he was put under a blanket against the minus-4 (25 F) chill and began adjusting to the pull of gravity after 166 days of weightlessness.

The torch, in a protective bag, was brought out and given to Yurchikhin to hold after it was unwrapped. He waved it a little and smiled.

Nyberg was quickly given dark glasses to protect her eyes against the intense sunlight. Parmitano, the last out, appeared thrilled, grinning broadly and pumping his fists.

All three were to be taken for tests at a medical tent at the landing site, then flown to the city of Karaganda for a welcome ceremony.

JAKARTA - Two suspected Indonesian extremists went on trial Monday accused of an “evil conspiracy” to bomb the Myanmar embassy to avenge the killing of Rohingya Muslims in that country.

Rokhadi, 28 and Achmad Taufiq, 22, could face the death penalty over the plan to attack the mission in May, amid anger in Muslim-majority Indonesia at persecution of the stateless Rohingya in mainly Buddhist Myanmar.

Rokhadi, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, allegedly raised funds for the attack while Taufiq is accused of helping assemble bombs.

Police say they foiled the plot when they arrested Taufiq, who was carrying a backpack full of pipe bombs, along with another man riding a motorbike in south Jakarta the night before the planned attack.

“The accused carried out an evil conspiracy,” prosecutor Okto Ricardo told the South Jakarta District Court. The men “wanted to bomb the Myanmar embassy in Jakarta so that there would be casualties, injuries and damage” to put pressure on the government in Myanmar, whom they blamed for the attacks on the Rohingya, Ricardo said.

There have been a string of attacks on minority Muslims in Myanmar since last year, mostly in the Rohingyas’ western home state of Rakhine. Hundreds have been killed and tens of thousands made homeless.

Buddhist mobs are seen as the main perpetrators behind the attacks al-though rights groups have also accused Myanmar security forces of complic-ity in the violence -- an allegation denied by the authorities.

Rokhadi and Taufiq are just two of several men who have been appre-hended over the attacks. The trials of the accused got under way last week with the case of Separiano, who goes by one name.

Rokhadi and Taufiq were tried separately on Monday but some of the charges against them were identical.

The prosecutor told the court the men were part of an extremist group called Negara Islam Indonesia (the Islamic State of Indonesia).

Rokhadi is accused of transferring 300,000 rupiah ($26) to the alleged mastermind of the plot, Sigit Indrajid, to buy a blender and hydrogen peroxide to help make bombs. Taufiq joined Indrajid and Separiano to mix together a highly combustible blend of chemicals that was placed into pipes, the court heard. Rokhadi and Taufiq have been charged under tough anti-terror laws which carry the death penalty.

Rokhadi faces four charges, including conspiracy to commit an act of terror and fund-raising for terror activities, while Taufiq faces two charges. Indrajid has also been detained over the plot and will go on trial next week.

“There is no reason to say that Indonesia is entering a crisis. There is also nothing such as a mini-crisis for Indonesia. Now, the country’s economic conditions have become stable,” he said after speaking at the “Mandiri Investment Forum 2013” here on Monday.

He added that all indicators, including data issued by foreign economic institutions, have shown that Indonesia’s economic condi-tions remain positive.

“The rupiah exchange rate has now remained stable after drop-ping in September,” he said.

Chatib noted that he was also convinced that the economy would become more stable and Indonesia would be able to over-come a future crisis due to the government’s plan to simplify investment rules.

“Right now, the government is compiling a revision of the list of negative investment areas, which

is expected to be able to increase investment and reduce repatria-tion of capital so that a positive impact would not only be felt in 2013, but also in the years to come, he said.

He added that the World Bank has also raised the country’s rank from 128 to 120 in its ease of do-ing business index.

“In terms of business competi-tiveness, Indonesia’s ranking has also jumped from 50th to 32nd in the world,” he added.

Several quarters had earlier said that Indonesia’s economy was suffering from a mini-crisis as its growth had dropped to below six percent.

dead in connection with a recent student brawl in Karangtengah, Su-kabumi, West Java.

The bodies of Muhamad Rizki Fadilah (17), Faizi Akbar (16), Indri-anto (17), and Randika Febriansyah (15) were found by villagers living around the Cimahi river.

“We are still investigating the case and have already questioned several witnesses. However, we have not named any suspects in the case because it seems that the four (students) died after they slipped into the river while trying to run away to avoid a clash with their student rivals,” Sukabumi resort police chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Asep Edi Suheri told Antara here on Monday. He said the police were still questioning witnesses from the victims’ state vocation school SMK Negeri I Cibadak and its rival, a private vocational school.

He noted that based on the police’s initial investigation, the students’ death had not been the result of a physical clash but had occurred while they were running away to avoid the fight.

“We have summoned representatives from the two schools to learn more about the students, and the bodies of the victims have been released to their families,” he stated.

PARIS — Andre-Pierre Gignac scored a late penalty as Marseille beat strugglers Sochaux 2-1 in the French league for its first win in eight games.

Gignac struck his spot-kick firmly down the middle in the 83rd minute for his fifth league goal of the season, handing Marseille its first win since Sept. 28 after six defeats and one draw in the previous seven games.

Defender Mathieu Peybernes was adjudged to have handled Gignac’s shot and the referee gave the pen-alty after consulting his linesman, prompting an angry reaction from Sochaux coach Herve Renard.

Marseille, which has lost all four of its matches in the Champions

League this season, is in fifth place with 21 points, two points behind fourth-place Nantes, which won 3-0 at Bordeaux earlier Sunday.

SEVILLE, Spain — Just when Lionel Messi appeared to be back to his scoring ways, Barcelona’s star forward picked up his third leg injury of the season during Sunday’s 4-1 win at Real Betis in the Spanish league.

Messi hurt his left leg during a sprint while challenging for the ball with a Betis defender in the 18th minute. Barcelona said that Messi had a “muscle injury in his left thigh” and that he would undergo medical tests on Monday.

The four-time world player of the year immediately told his team dugout that he was hurt, and Andres Iniesta replaced him in the 21st. Messi went straight to the bench and sat alongside the rest of his teammates.

“We will see tomorrow,” said Barcelona sports director Andoni Zubizarreta. “It’s never good news when a player has another injury, and above all when he is named Lionel Messi. “My opinion is that we can’t rush him back.”

On Wednesday, Messi had ended a four-game scoring drought— his longest since the 2010-11 season— by netting two goals in a 3-1 win over AC Milan in the Champions League.

Against last-place Betis, Barcelona didn’t miss their all-time leading scorer. Cesc Fabregas filled in to set up Neymar’s opener before scoring two goals after Pedro Rodriguez had extended the lead.

Collecting a pass around 30 metres from goal, he flicked the ball up then volleyed an unstoppable shot past hapless Napoli goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

“The coaching staff always tell me I have a good shot,” Pogba said in a post-match television inter-view. “Sometimes the ball ends up in the stands and sometimes it goes in, but I have to try.”

Pirlo, whose role as a deep-lying playmaker makes him a rarity in modern football, has revitalised his career and Juventus since joining the club at the start of the 2011/12 season, guiding them to successive Serie A titles.

Although he still sprays passes around the pitch with unerr-ing accuracy and is remarkably sprightly, Juventus know he can-not go on forever and Pogba is seen as the leading candidate to take over his role.

When Pogba left Manchester United for Juventus just over a year ago, it was a move which seemed to upset everybody.

After falling short against title rivals Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City so far this season, United finally delivered when it really mattered by beating Arsenal 1-0 on Sunday thanks to Robin van Persie’s 27th-minute goal against his former club.

The reigning champions are back within sight of Arsenal in fifth place and on the march, unbeaten in nine games in all competitions.

The Honda rider, who started from his ninth pole position of the year, played it safe by avoiding a thrilling tussle between defending champion Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa, who went on to finish the race first and second.

Marquez secured the title with 334 championship points, four ahead of twice former winner and Yamaha rider Lorenzo, and 34 in front of Pedrosa.

He passed Freddie Spencer’s 30-year-old record from when the American won his maiden crown at the age of 21, also on a Honda, pipping compatriot Kenny Roberts in the final race of the year at Imola in 1983.

“Congratulations Marc to you and the team! I couldn’t be happier for you! Enjoy this moment!,” the 51-year-old Spencer said on his Twitter feed.

The Catalan-born Marquez also became only the fourth rider in the 65-year history of Grand Prix racing to win world titles in three different categories, along w i t h M i k e

Hailwood, Phil Read and Valentino Rossi.

“It was the longest race of the year for me,” Marquez told Spanish broadcaster Telecinco with a grin from ear to ear. “I was very ner-vous at the start. I know I had said I wasn’t, but I was. Jorge started very well and I wasn’t sure quite what to do.

“The first 10 laps were the worst with Jorge and Dani in front and the others right behind, but I settled into it after that. “It has been a great year. This has arrived earlier than I expected. Maybe too early, but I want to thank everyone from my team and the fans.”

Lorenzo, who had cranked up the pressure on Marquez by winning the last two races in Australia and Japan, flew off the grid to hit the front at the first bend with Spanish compatriot Pedrosa in second, and Marquez third.

Pedrosa and Lorenzo went on to delight the fans with a battle for first place with Marquez watch-ing from third, as the two rivals in front of him swapped positions

with breath-taking passes over the opening laps.

With 10 laps gone Marquez hit the front, cutting inside the bend as the front two came together and Pedrosa was forced wide, dropping down to fifth. Race officials said they would investigate the incident on the MotoGP’s official Twitter feed.

DESERVED WINNERThe 26-year-old Lorenzo mus-

cled his way back to the front a lap later and the title rivals pulled away from the rest of the field, while Pe-drosa recovered ground to pressure his Honda team mate in second.

Marquez appeared to let Pedrosa pass him with five laps remain-ing and cruised across the line, Lorenzo’s third successive victory being too little, too late.

“It’s been a great championship. To have two Spaniards fighting for the title at the end is something special,” said Lorenzo, who became the first MotoGP rider to win at least eight races in a season and not take the title.

The wind farm near the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant is to eventually have a generation capac-ity of 1 gigawatt from 143 turbines, though its significance is not limited to the energy it will produce. Symboli-cally, the turbines will help restore the role of energy supplier to a region decimated by a population exodus following the multiple meltdowns triggered by the March 2011 earth-quake and tsunami.

“Many people were victimized and hurt by the accident at the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear power plant, so it is very meaningful to have a new source of energy — renewable energy — based here,” said Kazuyoshi Akaba, a vice minister of economy, trade and industry, after the turbine was turned on.

“It is the government’s mission to ensure this project is a success,” he said. The project also highlights Japan’s aspirations to sell its advanced energy technology around the globe.

Trading houses such as Mar-ubeni Corp., which is leading the consortium building the offshore wind farm, are investing aggres-sively in renewable energy as well as conventional sources, helped by government policies aimed at nurturing favored industries.All of

Japan’s 50 viable nuclear reactors are offline for safety checks under new regulatory guidelines drawn up after the Fukushima disaster. “I favor renewables. But it would be irresponsible to create a pie-in-the-sky claim that renewables alone are the answer,” said Paul Scalise, a fellow at Tokyo University and expert on Japan’s energy industry. “There is no such thing as a perfect power source.”

He cites figures showing wind power’s average generating capacity at 2 watts per square meter versus 20 watts per square meter for solar power — and 1,000 watts per square meter for nuclear.

“We are moving ahead one step at a time. This wind farm is a symbol of our future,” Sato said.


Malé (Maldives) - A political crisis deepened in the Maldives Monday when parliament’s speaker warned caretaker president Mohamed Waheed that his mandate had expired after the country failed to hold elections on time.

Speaker Abdulla Shahid, who is linked to the opposition Maldivian Demo-cratic Party (MDP), told Waheed that he had no right to govern because his time in office had lapsed under the terms of the constitution.

The country’s controversial Supreme Court postponed a run-off presiden-tial vote which could have elected a president on Sunday, a move slammed by the United States and likely to draw further international criticism.

“There is no other provision for extending the period of office of the president,” the speaker said in a letter to Waheed.

He also informed other branches of the state that Waheed was no longer able to exercise the powers of a president.

When it blocked the run-off vote on Sunday, the Supreme Court said Waheed could continue to hold office until a run-off election is held on November 16, five days after his term should have ended Monday.

The court, dominated by judges named during 30 years of autocratic rule by former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, has blocked three attempts to elect a new leader for the Sunni Muslim nation of 350,000 people.

Mohamed Nasheed, the country’s first democratically elected president who was ousted in February last year, is the frontrunner to return to power. He has accused the court and Waheed of deliberately blocking him.

He secured nearly 47 percent of the vote in a first-round vote on Saturday, compared with just under 30 percent for his nearest rival Abdulla Yameen, the half brother of Gayoom.

The United States accused the Supreme Court of “unduly” interfering in the democratic process by postponing the runoff, five years after the Indian Ocean islands introduced multi-party democracy for the first time.

“Efforts by the Supreme Court to repeatedly and unduly interfere in the electoral process subverts Maldives’ democracy and takes decision-making out of the hands of the people,” the US embassy to the Maldives and Sri Lanka said Sunday. On Sunday night Waheed vowed he would not step down despite increasing opposition calls for him to go.

“The president assured the public that he will resign on the 16th (after the run-off election) and will not accept any further delays to the elections,” Waheed’s spokesman Masood Imad told AFP.

Nasheed resigned in February 2012 following demonstrations and a mutiny by security forces which he denounced as a coup engineered by Waheed and former strongman Gayoom. Despite the political uncertainty, the streets of Male were calm on Monday.


MOSCOW — A Russian space capsule carrying the Sochi Olympic torch and three astronauts returned to Earth on Monday from the International Space Station in a flawless landing on the steppes of Kazakhstan.

The Soyuz capsule landed at 8:49 local time (0249 GMT), about three and a half hours after undocking from the station with Russian Fyodor Yurchikhin, American Karen Nyberg and Luca Parmitano of Italy aboard.

The unlit Olympic torch was brought to the ISS on Thursday when three new crew members arrived. Two Russian crew members took it on a spacewalk Saturday. The capsule descended through brilliantly clear skies under a parachute. Yurchikhin, the mission commander, was extracted from the capsule within about 10 minutes of touchdown and carried to a reclining chair, where he was put under a blanket against the minus-4 (25 F) chill and began adjusting to the pull of gravity after 166 days of weightlessness.

The torch, in a protective bag, was brought out and given to Yurchikhin to hold after it was unwrapped. He waved it a little and smiled.

Nyberg was quickly given dark glasses to protect her eyes against the intense sunlight. Parmitano, the last out, appeared thrilled, grinning broadly and pumping his fists.

All three were to be taken for tests at a medical tent at the landing site, then flown to the city of Karaganda for a welcome ceremony.

JAKARTA - Two suspected Indonesian extremists went on trial Monday accused of an “evil conspiracy” to bomb the Myanmar embassy to avenge the killing of Rohingya Muslims in that country.

Rokhadi, 28 and Achmad Taufiq, 22, could face the death penalty over the plan to attack the mission in May, amid anger in Muslim-majority Indonesia at persecution of the stateless Rohingya in mainly Buddhist Myanmar.

Rokhadi, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, allegedly raised funds for the attack while Taufiq is accused of helping assemble bombs.

Police say they foiled the plot when they arrested Taufiq, who was carrying a backpack full of pipe bombs, along with another man riding a motorbike in south Jakarta the night before the planned attack.

“The accused carried out an evil conspiracy,” prosecutor Okto Ricardo told the South Jakarta District Court. The men “wanted to bomb the Myanmar embassy in Jakarta so that there would be casualties, injuries and damage” to put pressure on the government in Myanmar, whom they blamed for the attacks on the Rohingya, Ricardo said.

There have been a string of attacks on minority Muslims in Myanmar since last year, mostly in the Rohingyas’ western home state of Rakhine. Hundreds have been killed and tens of thousands made homeless.

Buddhist mobs are seen as the main perpetrators behind the attacks al-though rights groups have also accused Myanmar security forces of complic-ity in the violence -- an allegation denied by the authorities.

Rokhadi and Taufiq are just two of several men who have been appre-hended over the attacks. The trials of the accused got under way last week with the case of Separiano, who goes by one name.

Rokhadi and Taufiq were tried separately on Monday but some of the charges against them were identical.

The prosecutor told the court the men were part of an extremist group called Negara Islam Indonesia (the Islamic State of Indonesia).

Rokhadi is accused of transferring 300,000 rupiah ($26) to the alleged mastermind of the plot, Sigit Indrajid, to buy a blender and hydrogen peroxide to help make bombs. Taufiq joined Indrajid and Separiano to mix together a highly combustible blend of chemicals that was placed into pipes, the court heard. Rokhadi and Taufiq have been charged under tough anti-terror laws which carry the death penalty.

Rokhadi faces four charges, including conspiracy to commit an act of terror and fund-raising for terror activities, while Taufiq faces two charges. Indrajid has also been detained over the plot and will go on trial next week.

“There is no reason to say that Indonesia is entering a crisis. There is also nothing such as a mini-crisis for Indonesia. Now, the country’s economic conditions have become stable,” he said after speaking at the “Mandiri Investment Forum 2013” here on Monday.

He added that all indicators, including data issued by foreign economic institutions, have shown that Indonesia’s economic condi-tions remain positive.

“The rupiah exchange rate has now remained stable after drop-ping in September,” he said.

Chatib noted that he was also convinced that the economy would become more stable and Indonesia would be able to over-come a future crisis due to the government’s plan to simplify investment rules.

“Right now, the government is compiling a revision of the list of negative investment areas, which

is expected to be able to increase investment and reduce repatria-tion of capital so that a positive impact would not only be felt in 2013, but also in the years to come, he said.

He added that the World Bank has also raised the country’s rank from 128 to 120 in its ease of do-ing business index.

“In terms of business competi-tiveness, Indonesia’s ranking has also jumped from 50th to 32nd in the world,” he added.

Several quarters had earlier said that Indonesia’s economy was suffering from a mini-crisis as its growth had dropped to below six percent.

AntaraSUKABUMI - Four senior high school students have been found

dead in connection with a recent student brawl in Karangtengah, Su-kabumi, West Java.

The bodies of Muhamad Rizki Fadilah (17), Faizi Akbar (16), Indri-anto (17), and Randika Febriansyah (15) were found by villagers living around the Cimahi river.

“We are still investigating the case and have already questioned several witnesses. However, we have not named any suspects in the case because it seems that the four (students) died after they slipped into the river while trying to run away to avoid a clash with their student rivals,” Sukabumi resort police chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Asep Edi Suheri told Antara here on Monday. He said the police were still questioning witnesses from the victims’ state vocation school SMK Negeri I Cibadak and its rival, a private vocational school.

He noted that based on the police’s initial investigation, the students’ death had not been the result of a physical clash but had occurred while they were running away to avoid the fight.

“We have summoned representatives from the two schools to learn more about the students, and the bodies of the victims have been released to their families,” he stated.

Many cultural relics originating from thirteenth century were dis-covered in the temple.

Various stories arose concerning with the temple naming located amidst the paddy fields being far from residential areas. However, the naming is inseparable from the discovery of yellowish bronze

bracelets sizing large enough. It is said the bracelet was found in the temple area. Other than bracelets, it was also found a small bronze bracelet scattered around the tem-ple. Unfortunately, none of those bracelets are now left.

Priest of the Gelang Agung temple, I Made Terum and priest of Dalem Temple of Buangga I Ketut Malen said their predecessors frequently showed off those objects. Unfortunately, they had disappeared somewhere. Now, the existence of those objects was unknown, includ-ing the preliminary evidence of the temple establishment. Surround-ing communities only referred to ancient stories.

In the temple was also found some perforated coins wrapped in leaves when an excavation was made. Oddly, said a community leader, Made Ngaceng, the eryth-rina leaf used to wrap the coins was still fresh. Those perforated coins were found during an excavation by residents and the officers of the Antiquities Reserve, Archaeo-logical Agency for Bali, West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara Region in 1997.

Except for bronze bracelets and perforated coins, according to the story, it was also found a temple mound measuring one square meter when the temple was first discovered. Afterward, the mound

was excavated. As a result, it was discovered various kinds of statues. Allegedly, some relicts were still kept under the temple.

Few relics excavated have now been placed in Gedong Arca. There are a statue of Lord Vishnu riding Garuda (eagle), phallus, a statue resembling lotus flower comprising three sections with octagonal base, the center of three-tiered rectan-gular frame, and circular pinnacle surrounded by sculpture resembling a lotus leaf. When viewing the phal-lus building next to it, it is likely a symbol of yoni. If both symbols are combined, then they symbol-ize fertility. There is also a relic of Padmasana shrine whose headboard

is inscribed with Balinese script and a few fragments of the buildings are made of stone, while fragment of the building is rectangle.

Chief of Buangga customary village, IGN Arnawa, stated that local community truly hoped the government to pay attention to the temple existence. He assessed the government’s attention so far was very minimal associated with physical condition of the temple and cultural relics retained inside the temple.

Meanwhile, various magical stories accompanied the existence of the Gelang Agung temple. One of them mentioned that in the past many juwuk linglang oranges grew around the temple and it was believed to have capability of reviv-ing the dead. Similarly, turmeric was said to grow in the temple area where if harvested it would turn into gold. However, if it was taken home it would no longer be gold. “So far, we have a real experience where the food during the ceremony in the temple never turns stale despite being left for many days,” Ngaceng said.

Jro Mangku Terum explained the structure of the Gelang Agung temple was not much different from other sanctum in general in Bali. It had a two-tiered meru shrine used to venerate Goddess Sri. In the temple also occurred a chamber to venerate Danghyang Dwijendra. In certain seasons, especially when the paddy plant belonging to residents of Buangga and surrounding resi-dents was attacked by diseases, they would come to pray to the temple and beg salvation. BEIJING - China will open its state-owned firms to greater investment by private companies, a state-run newspaper reported Monday, as media ramp up expectations from a top Communist Party meeting on economic reforms.

According to the China Daily, private partners will be allowed to take 10 to 15 percent stakes in the country’s state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

The move would give such companies or inves-tors a bigger say in decision-making, it quoted officials of the state-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) as saying. The agency is a powerful body that oversees large SOEs collectively worth trillions of dollars, many of which enjoy monopolies in key sectors such as rail and energy.

The change appears to differ from existing partial flotations of SOEs where China’s big four state-owned banks are all quoted in Hong Kong and other overseas markets, as are units of oil gi-ants Sinopec, CNOOC and CNPC, several subsid-iaries of conglomerate China Resources, telecom behemoths China Mobile and China Unicom, and scores of other entities.

But partnerships are rare, with the China Daily noting the “rare exception” of a 2003 deal that handed private industrial conglomerate Fosun Group 49 percent ownership in a joint venture with state-run China National Medicine Corp.

“All kinds of companies could join SOE re-structuring,” the China Daily quoted Bai Yingzi, director of SASAC’s enterprise reform division as saying.

The report came on the third day of a four-day gathering known as the Third Plenum at which leaders of the ruling Communist party are ex-pected to draw up a decade-long blueprint for the world’s second-largest economy.

The highly-anticipated meeting, which is being held at a heavily-secured Beijing hotel, has been used in the past by China’s leaders as a launching pad for economic reforms.

But despite much raising of expectations by state-run media, analysts say that China is unlikely to embark on major reforms or privatisation of state firms, and that any reforms unveiled after the plenum will likely be limited to broad outlines rather than detailed policy changes.

The China Daily report said that “specific plans on SOE reforms are expected to be drafted after the third plenum”.

In a major report issued in March, the Organisa-tion for Economic Cooperation and Development said that China’s progress on economic liberalisa-tion had stalled since 2008.

Aside from opening up state-owned enterprises, other topics expected to be taken up at the four-day meeting include land and administrative reforms as well as changes to China’s residency registra-tion system.

The fund was quite large. Al-though the ring road was urgently realized, Surya Suamba mentioned if his party was still thinking about the matter of financing. There were

three options proposed namely self-financing by Badung County, worked on by Central Public Works or cooperated with private sector.

Further, he explained the results of the study on the ring road would be reported to the Regent of Badung for approval in the near future. Police guarded stores to prevent people from hauling off food, water and such non-essentials as TVs and treadmills, but there was often no one to carry away the dead — not even those seen along the main road from the airport to Tacloban, the worst-hit city along the country’s remote eastern seaboard.

At a small naval base, eight bloated corpses — including that of a baby — were submerged in sea water brought in by the storm. Officers there had yet to move them, saying they had no body bags or electricity to preserve them.

Two officials said Sunday that Friday’s typhoon may have killed

10,000 or more people, but with the slow pace of recovery, the official death toll remained well below that. The Philippine military confirmed 942 dead, but shattered communica-tions, transportation links and local governments indicate that the final toll will take days to be known. Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said “we pray” that the death toll is less than 10,000.

Tacloban resembled a garbage dump from the air, punctuated only by a few concrete buildings that remained standing.

“I don’t believe there is a single structure that is not destroyed or se-verely damaged in some way — every

single building, every single house,” U.S. Marine Brig. Gen. Paul Kennedy said after taking a helicopter flight over the city. He spoke on the tarmac at the airport, where two Marine C-130 cargo planes were parked, engines running, unloading supplies.

Authorities said at least 2 mil-lion people in 41 provinces were affected by Haiyan, one of the most powerful recorded typhoons to ever hit land and likely the deadliest natural disaster to beset this poor Southeast Asian nation.

Philippine soldiers were distrib-uting food and water in Tacloban, and assessment teams from the United Nations and other inter-national agencies were seen for the first time. The U.S. military dispatched food, water, generators and a contingent of Marines to the city, the first outside help in what will swell into a major international relief mission.


The rebels, one of many armed groups operating in the mineral-rich but impoverished east of the DR Congo, have been routed by the national army, who are backed by a 3,000-strong special United Nations intervention brigade. Allegedly supported by neigh-bouring Rwanda and Uganda but seemingly abandoned by their sponsors due to international pressure, the M23 announced last week that their 18-month insurgency was over. They are expected to put this in writing in Uganda on Monday.

“Our hope is that we have a firm commitment from the M23 rebels to renounce their use of arms,” said DR Congo govern-ment spokesman Lambert Mende. The M23, a mainly ethnic-Tutsi force who mutinied from the Con-golese army, have not confirmed Monday’s meeting. But with no more military leverage they are seen as having little room for manoeuvre.

The agreement is expected to settle the fate of about 1,500 M23 fighters who have crossed into Uganda and are languishing in

camps along the border. Uganda has refused to hand them over to the DR Congo.

Around 100 more injured rebels have crossed to Rwanda. Mende said the rebels would be dealt with “case by case” -- with many rank-and-file fight-ers expected to be given the op-tion to return to the army. More complicated is the fate of around 100 M23 commanders. These include M23 leader Sultani Mak-enga, accused of participating in several massacres, mutilations, abductions and sexual violence, sometimes against children.

“The rebels, by signing, will effectively be surrendering. From our side, even though we have won and triumphed, we will still respect what is on the table,” said Francois Muamba, a DR Congo delegate to the talks. The UN’s special envoy to the Great Lakes, Mary Robinson, told AFP the ac-cord would be “a very important step for peace”.

Speaking to AFP on Sunday, she said the deal will also be fol-lowed by operations to neutralise other rebel groups in a concerted effort to end one of Africa’s most brutal and longest-running wars.


“We condemn the summoning and arrest of some of our members and demand to stop them imme-diately,” said the Ramallah-based Fatah party, which was founded by Arafat and is now headed by Pales-tinian president Mahmud Abbas.

Arafat died in Paris on Novem-ber 11, 2004 at 75 after falling sick a

month earlier. Doctors were unable to specify the cause of death and no post-mortem was carried out at the time.

Palestinian society has long given currency to the rumour that he was murdered, and following the findings of Swiss scientists which “moderately” supported the notion Arafat was poisoned, Palestinian officials openly accused Israel of

“assassinating” him. Israel flatly denies killing Arafat.

Its statement on Sunday, Fatah also called on Hamas “to end the division and achieve national unity” and appealed for it to reverse its ban on the commemoration of Arafat, “the symbol of Palestine and all lib-eration movements in the world”.

But Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri blamed Fatah for thwart-

ing efforts of his Islamist movement to hold a joint ceremony.

Fatah “insisted it should be only a Fatah ceremony” and decided to not attend a joint meeting that would determine the factional representa-tives of a memorial ceremony, he wrote on his Facebook page.

Tensions between the two sides have been high since 2006, when Hamas trounced Abbas’ long-domi-

nant Fatah in Palestinian legislative elections, and boiled over into vi-cious street battles between gunmen from both sides later that year.

The ferocity of the violence shocked Palestinians, splitting them into rival camps and the occupied territories into two separate entities, with Hamas unchallenged in Gaza and Abbas’s power base limited to the West Bank.

“Almost 90 percent of the par-ticipants taking part will be tourists, while the remaining is athlete such as the elite runners from Kenya and Ethiopia. They are interested

in joining this event because the marathon held at night is the first of its kind in Indonesia,” he said.


“This activity is synergized with tourism promotion program, so it will be in line with the program of the tourism and economic creative ministry. Surely, the implementa-

tion would be spread so that the growth of tourism is not only fo-cused in Southern Bali,” he said.

According to him, all sporting activities packaged as a tourism promotion would be organized dur-ing low season of tourist arrival. This attempt was intended to cover the slack tourist arrivals in the season.

A number of residents of Puraja hamlet, Peninjoan village, Tembuku, complained as the clean water provided by the Mu-nicipality Waterworks (PDAM) of Bangli had not flowed to their homes nearly for a month. Such condition made them difficult to get clean water service in meeting their daily needs. Residents threatened to rally to the PDAM office if the water problem in the region could not be resolved.

One of the Puraja residents, Suyasa, said on Sunday (Nov 10) that in truth there had been clean water service by Municipality Waterworks at Puraja hamlet. However, the allotment for local residents was set once a week every Wednesday. However, since the past three weeks the water had not been running so that it made the residents distraught. Moreover, it also occurred on last Galungan and Kuningan feast day. Residents got difficulty in preparing a number of needs related to the feast day because the water flow of the Municipal Waterworks did not work.

Similar complaint was also revealed by hamlet chief of Puraja, Ketut Rukun. He said that actually many large springs were available at Puraja hamlet managed by PDAM. However, many of those springs were drained to villages underneath Puraja.

Despite having many springs, Puraja hamlet did not get any privi-leges. In contrast, Puraja hamlet should be patient to face the clean water crisis overwhelming the region. Since the water flow of the PDAM had not worked for long enough and occurred repeatedly, some people were planning to come to PDAM Bangli to express their aspirations related to the matter on Monday.

He added that individually local residents had frequently enough conveyed such condition to PDAM. Nevertheless, their aspirations were just accepted but never received a serious response from the PDAM. Residents alleged if the water that had not flowed nearly for a month happened due to injustice management. A number of informa-tion told if several other villages were given priority with full service by the PDAM.

So far, to resolve the problem, the residents who had cistern at their home were forced to purchase water from tank truck. Meanwhile, the others who did not have cistern should fight to get clean water by taking it directly to springs and existing rivers. (ina)

A number of contractors in Bule-leng County are pessimistic if the road repair program launched by Regent Putu Agus Suradnyana in 2014 can run thoroughly. Although the county government set up a fund of IDR 90 billion, the supporting factors to complete the program in one year are very limited.

Based on information from a number of contractors in Buleleng on Sunday (Nov 10), the fund worth IDR 90 billion budgeted for the road improvement in 2014 was ascer-tained not to be entirely absorbed. It happened because the supporting factors to work on the hot-mix road in Buleleng were still very limited. The Asphalt Mixing Plant (AMP) in Buleleng only amounted to two units. Even in Bali, there were only about five factories. Meanwhile, the hot-mix roadwork was not only carried out in Buleleng, but also in other counties in Bali. “It does not

include the other projects financed by regional budget for national road,” said a contractor.

In addition, almost no contractor in Buleleng was capable of doing the hot-mix road. Aside from security assurance, the labor and hot-mix support, the risk of loss was very large in the hot-mix roadwork. When relying on the contractor from outside Bali, the failure factor was huge. It was proved by the presence of a number of contractors from outside Bali that had been blacklisted because they neglected their project construction in Buleleng in 2013. “If contractors from outside Bali win a tender, they must also be supported by AMP of Bali and it is very dif-ficult to obtain,” he said.

Chairman of the Indonesian National Construction Association (Gapensi) of Buleleng Chapter, Nyoman Suasana aka Jenggo, when asked for his opinion expressed that he was very pessimistic if the road improvement project with a

budget of IDR 90 billion could run. According to him, the intention of regent to establish hot-mix road in short time to villages was good, but it should be taken into account the supporting factors, such as the availability of hot-mix and ability of local contractors.

Jenggo said almost no local contractors could participate in the tender of hot-mix asphalt road con-struction. If there was a large con-tractor, according to him, it would think twice to take the project due to limited supporting factors such as human resources, equipment and materials in the form of hot-mix. “For the time being, a number of rural roads should be allowed to apply fried asphalt first, so local contractors can get a job,” he said.

In the meantime, a contractor, Made Suarnawa alias Dek Mi, also expressed his pessimism that hot-mix road construction project could be completed thoroughly as the expecta-tion of the regent in 2014. (kmb15)

WASHINGTON — A power-ful typhoon hit the Philippines on Friday and moved out to the South China Sea:

HURRICANE? CYCLONE? TYPHOON? They’re all the same, officially tropical cyclones. But they just use distinctive terms for a storm in different parts of the world. Hurricane is used in the Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, central and northeast Pacific. They are typhoons in the northwest Pacific. In the Bay of Bengal and the Ara-bia Sea, they are called cyclones. Tropical cyclone is used in the southwest India Ocean; in the southwestern Pacific and south-eastern India Ocean they are severe tropical cyclones.

STRENGTH: A storm gets a name and is considered a tropi-cal storm at 39 mph (63 kph). It becomes a hurricane, typhoon, tropical cyclone, or cyclone at 74 mph (119 kph). There are five strength categories, depending on wind speed. The highest category is 5 and that’s above 155 mph (249 kph). Australia has a differ-ent system for categorizing storm strength.

ROTATION: If they are north of the equator they rotate clock-wise. If they are south, they rotate counter-clockwise.

SEASON: The Atlantic and central Pacific hurricane seasons are June 1 through Nov. 30. Eastern Pacific: May 15 to Nov. 30; north-western Pacific season is close to

all year, with the most from May to November. The cyclone season in the south Pacific and Australia runs from November to April. The Bay of Bengal has two seasons April to June and September to November.

WHERE IS THE BUSIEST PLACE? The northwestern Pacific where Typhoon Haiyan has just hit. A normal year there involves 27 named storms. Haiyan is the 28th named storm and there has already been a 29th. By comparison the Atlantic averages 11 named storms a year and this year there have been 12, none of them causing major problems.

WHO DECIDES THE NAMES? The lists are maintained by the World Meteorological Organiza-tion; the names are ones that are familiar in each region. Names are taken off the list and replaced to avoid confusion if a hurricane causes a lot of damage or deaths. For example, Katrina was retired after it devastated New Orleans in 2005. The Philippines has its own naming system, so Typhoon Hai-yan is also being called Yolanda.

HOW DOES EL NINO AF-FECT STORMS? During an El Nino — when the central Pacific is warming — there are fewer Atlantic storms. El Ninos shift where storms form, but not the number, for the northwest Pacific and the southwest Pacific. The central Pacific gets more storms during El Nino and the year after. This year has neither an El Nino nor its opposite, a La Nina. It is a neutral year.

Formerly, Tanah Lot was not tampered but is now back-filled with tetrapods, the impact happens to Kelating. Then, when Cupel (in Negara) is protected,

the adjacent area is exhausted,” he explained.

Other than installation of break-waters, Mangku also mentioned the taking of beach sand also helped aggravate the abrasion. Meanwhile, the government could only build safeguard in the abraded beach without making a strict rule on the prohibition of taking beach sand.

“The solution is the same as constructing breakwaters. After constructing breakwaters, it will cause abrasion at another location. This happens constantly because the solution of beach problems in Bali is not performed holistically,” he concluded. (kmb32)

in cooperation with the Indonesian foreign affairs ministry, will or-ganize the ASEAN Meeting on Protection of Witnesses and Victims of Transnational Crimes in Bali, on November 12-13, 2013.

The meeting is a follow-up of the Joint Statement on Interna-tional Cooperation on Protection of Witnesses and Victims of Trans-national Organized Crimes issued at an international conference organized in Bali on June 13, 2012, LPSK Deputy Chairperson Lies Sulistiani said on Monday.

“The conference’s participants praised Indonesia’s initiative on the need to follow-up the conference’s statement by establishing a regional network to strengthen international cooperation in the protection of witnesses and victims of transnational organized crimes,” she said.

The upcoming meeting in Bali is to be participated in by repre-sentatives of 10 ASEAN member countries, namely Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Singapore, Bru-nei Darussalam, and Indonesia. Representatives from Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste are also invited to attend the meeting.

The Bali conference in 2012 was attended by law enforcement officials from 30 countries.

The LPSK signed a memorandum of understanding on the protection for witnesses and victims with the International Organization for Migra-tion (IOM) and the National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT).

EvEry Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali. There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is con-sidered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbul-umbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land. Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

previous year, the celebration of Heroes’ Day in Bangli County was filled with rally and pilgrimage im-plementation to Memorial Park at Penglipuran, Bangli, Sunday (Nov 10). However, it was slightly dif-ferent where the current celebration was enlivened with the installation of red-and-white flag at a number of locations such as at main roads, Captain Mudita Square in Bangli, the agency office and residence of the officials in Bangli.

Installation of the red-and-white flags since the day before was refer-ring to the circular of the Regent of Bangli Made Gianyar requiring all the structural officials in Bangli County to put up flag in the size agreed upon. It was intended to promote the nationalism of Bangli community.

Deputy Regent of Bangli, Sang Nyoman Sedana Arta, amid the cel-ebration stated that Heroes’ Day fall-ing every November 10 posed one of the evidences that current young generation would never forget the services extended by the past great heroes. Sedana Arta expected that

younger generation could appreciate the struggle of our national heroes. “As young generation, we must live the struggle of our heroes how bit-terly they repelled the invaders out of our country,” he affirmed.

He added that to continue the struggle of the heroes, the youths should no longer fight against the invaders with sharpened bamboo, but through their contribution in the development. “Indonesia needs heroes of development. Such condition could be found in the subak areas at Dangin Tukadaya village, Jem-brana County. Most of the paddy plants collapsed as being hacked by rains. The ready-to-harvest paddies collapsed and submerged in water. Farmers worried if the condition con-tinued their paddy plants would turn damaged. As consequence, it would have an impact on the

price at the harvest time. Actu-ally, the harvest time was just waiting for the right time.

Many paddy plants col-lapsed at Dangin Tukadaya, reaching nearly one hectare and the location was spread. Ketut Tarma, one of local residents, said if the paddy would soon be harvested. However, due to recent heavy rains they col-lapsed and submerged in water.

He believed the selling price for the collapsed paddies would reduce though they could still be harvested.

If they were neglected any longer, the fallen paddies would rot so farmers would harvest theirs earlier. “Rather than being damaged, it must be harvested though the price will be beyond the expectation,” ex-plained the resident. (kmb26)

Mangupura (Bali Post)—Police are urged to tighten security

in Kuta tourist area. It is responding to the public concern about the rising crime rate particularly snatching in the local area.

“Snatching action increases sharply in the Samigita (Seminyak, Legian and Kuta) area. Almost every day there are snatching cases against travelers using motor vehicle,” said a legislator of the Badung House from Legian, I Wayan Puspa Negara, Sunday (Nov 10).

He said the snatching action was very disturbing to society. Moreover, the snatchers committed the crimes unabashedly so that it claimed many victims, especially causing tourists to get injured. Some prone areas to snatching were the areas mostly vis-ited by tourists wishing to enjoy the

nightlife. Snatching action was often committed around 11:00 p.m. until 5:00 a.m.

Puspa Negara judged the rampant snatching emerged due to lack of police’s ability in performing surveil-lance. Although police had worked hard, Puspa still urged the officers to intensify the patrols. This problem should be immediately addressed. Otherwise, such condition was feared to tarnish the image of Kuta tourist destination. Besides, the program of zero crime in the local area could not be realized.

“I strongly deplore this condi-tion. Hopefully, the Kuta Police could do patrol more intensively and aggressively as well as perform a raid in the snatching-prone areas,” he said. (kmb25)

Starring Chris Hemsworth, the Marvel superhero sequel earned $109.4 million when it opened inter-nationally last weekend and $94 mil-lion internationally this weekend.

“It’s an extraordinary thing,” said Dave Hollis, executive vice president of distribution at Walt Disney Studios. “These guys at Marvel have been some of the most consistent when it comes to making movies and creating big events that drive a ton of people to

the movie theater. They overdelivered on expectations.” However, some ob-servers were expecting the weekend total to reach over $100 million.

In limited theaters Thursday eve-ning, “Thor: The Dark World” brought in $7.1 million overnight.

Surpassing the ticket sales of “Thor,” which scored $65.7 million when it opened in May of 2011, “Thor: The Dark World” marks a record for a Disney November open-

ing, topping the $70.5 million “The Incredibles” earned in 2004. But, come Nov. 22, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” is predicted to take the No. 1 spot.

“We have a great little stretch of time prior to ‘Hunger Games,’ “ Hollis said. “Yes, ‘Hunger Games’ will do a whole bunch of business, but that’s not to say we don’t expect to still be a relevant option for consumers that weekend and onto the Thanksgiving weekend that follows.”

activity entitled Run under the Stars promised a unique and impressive experience of the race for the par-ticipants especially intended for non-athlete whose number com-monly dominated similar run events in various foreign countries.

“Almost 90 percent of the par-ticipants taking part will be tourists,

while the remaining is athlete such as the elite runners from Kenya and Ethiopia. They are interested in joining this event because the marathon held at night is the first of its kind in Indonesia,” he said.


“This activity is synergized with tourism promotion program, so it will be in line with the program of

the tourism and economic creative ministry. Surely, the implementa-tion would be spread so that the growth of tourism is not only fo-cused in Southern Bali,” he said.

According to him, all sporting activities packaged as a tourism promotion would be organized during low season of tourist ar-rival. This attempt was intended to cover the slack tourist arrivals in the season.


Chairman of the BPPD Bali, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Suka-wati, earlier said that his party had formed a Sport Division to focus on targeting sportsmen as the target market. However, he asked that any sporting event held should not deviate from cultural tourism. “Bali tourism must remain to be rooted in cultural tourism,” he said.

He added that BPPD Bali aimed at targeting markets that could be packed in a fixed context to cultural tourism. The market share of sport got special attention because this share could be processed and managed within the remit of the culture. (kmb27)
