Otras Obras is pleased to announce its 7th exhibition, a two-person show with Edgardo Aragón and

 James Benning. Benning will be showing Stemple Pass , a film broken up into four thirty-minute shots,one of each season, in which we see a replica of the Kaczynski (the “Unabomber”) cabin. Benninghimself reads an extract from a Kaczynski journal from the 1970s, two notebooks written in numericalcode in 1985 and decoded by Benning in 2011,two excerpts from Industrial Society and Its Future (1995), and a 2001 interview with Kaczynski. Aragón will be showing Efectos De Familia and La Encomienda . Efectos De Familia consists of 13 segments in which we see children re-enactingplayfully violent episodes. La Encomienda also uses re-enactment, but this time the content deals withthe exploitation of mines in Oaxaca. We then see a group of men singing protest songs that originate

from different Latin American countries. Both artists restage personal and collective histories that dealwith violence and darkness in the political sense. The juxtaposition of two artists who share verydifferent but very intertwined histories (California and México) is a way for us to be able to create adialogue around difference and subjectivity. Revolutionary discourse and the rupture of cycles that dealwith power both seem distant and ever-present in all the works.

vemos a niños recreando episodios violentos de manera juguetona. La Encomienda también utiliza la recreación,pero esta vez el contenido trata sobre la explotación de minas en Oaxaca. Vemos después a un grupo de hombresque cantan canciones de protesta que se originan en diferentes países de América Latina. Ambos artistasreescenifican historias personales y colectivas que tienen que ver con la violencia y la oscuridad en el sentidopolítico. La yuxtaposición de dos artistas que comparten historias muy diferentes pero muy entrelazadas( California y México) es una manera de crear un diálogo en torno a la diferencia y la subjetividad. Discursosrevolucionarios y la ruptura de ciclos que lidian con el poder, parecen distantes y siempre presentes en todas lasobras.

 James Benning (born 1942) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during World War II in a German working class community that sent its sons to fight their cousins. Later he became a self-taught building designer. He played baseball for the first twentyyears of his life receiving a degree in mathematics while playing on a baseball scholarship. He dropped out of graduateschool to deny his military deferment (his friends were dying in Viet Nam) and worked with migrant workers in Coloradoteaching their children how to read and write. Later he helped start a commodities food program that fed the poor in theMissouri Ozarks. At the age of thirty-three, he received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin where he studied withDavid Bordwell. For the next four years he taught filmmaking at Northwestern University, University of Wisconsin,University of Oklahoma, and the University of California San Diego. In 1980 he moved to lower Manhattan making filmswith the aid of grant and German Television money. After eight years in New York he moved to Val Verde, California,where he currently resides teaching film/video at California Institute of the Arts. In the past twenty-five years he hascompleted fifty-three works that have shown in many different venues across the world.

 James Benning. Nacido en 1942 en Milwaukee, Wisconsin, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial dentro de una comunidadde clase obrera alemana que envió a sus hijos a luchar contra sus primos. Más tarde se convirtió en un diseñador autodidacta de edificios. Jugó béisbol los primeros veinte años de su vida recibiendo una licenciatura en matemáticasmientras jugaba con una beca de béisbol. Dejó la escuela de posgrado para negar su aplazamiento militar (sus amigosmorían en Viet Nam) y trabajó con los trabajadores migrantes en Colorado enseñando a sus hijos a leer y escribir. Edgardo Aragón (born 1985) received his B.A. in Fine Arts from the ENPEG la Esmeralda, Mexico City. His work has beenthe subject of solo exhibitions at institutions including the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporaneo (MUAC), MexicoCity; MoMA P.S.1, New York; and the Luckman Gallery, Los Angeles, CA. His work has also been included in groupexhibitions including Resisting the Present, Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, 2012; Disponible: A Kind of Mexican

Show, San Francisco Art Institute, 2011; Historias Fugaces, Laboral Centro de Arte, Gijon, 2011; and El horizonte del topo,Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels, 2010. His work was also included in the 3rd Moscow Biennial of Young Artists, the 12thIstanbul Biennial, and the 8th Mercosur Biennial. His films have been screened in film festivals in Werkletiz, Marseille, andMexico City. He lives and works in Oaxaca.
