Riverford Organic's recipe of the monthCarrots and Feta (serves 4)
Ingredients:
• About 750g of carrots• Olive oil • 1 tablespoon of toasted cumin seeds • 100g feta • 2 tablespoons of chopped mint • Good olive oil to drizzle
Method
Scrub carrots and cut into halves or quarters depending on the size of the carrots. Toss in some olive oil and toast in the oven at 180oc for about 45mins (they need to be slightly browned).
When cool enough to handle, squash them in to small pieces with your hands (pick them up and squeeze!)
Now mix in the cumin seeds which you have toasted in a dry pan until they are just starting to colour. Then ground the seeds in a mortar and pestle.
Now spread them loosely on a plate/serving dish and scatter over the feta and mint, drizzle over the olive oil and you’re done!

Are you after a brighter whiter smile?Local dental surgeon Dr Ahmed Farooq from All Saints Dental in Kings Heath takes us through the finer points of tooth whitening.
What is tooth whitening?
Tooth whitening is a process used to chemically alter the colour of teeth. This is achieved by removing stains and discolouration by adding a whitening agent (hydrogen peroxide) to the tooth surface. This results in the tooth looking whiter and gives an overall more youthful appearance.
How does whitening work?
Tooth colour may be lightened using hydrogen peroxide (bleach). This may be done via external whitening or internal whitening.
There are two methods of external tooth whitening.
Home whitening kits:
The dentist will prescribe a safe dose of whitening jelly to be used within close fitting gum shield trays. This is a lower dose than the
one you would be given if you opted for chair side whitening. The trays will prevent contact with gums in order to prevent burns. You will have to wear the trays for about one hour each night, until you achieve the desired effect. This will allow the agent the time it needs to take action. These home whitening kits help you maintain a longer lasting result compared to the initial treatment alone. You can also top the colour up every month if required.
Chair side / laser whitening:
With this method of tooth whitening, the dentist will use a much stronger whitening jelly then the one used at home. The dentist can whiten both the upper and lower dental arch at the same time. The process is much shorter then home whitening, leaving you with a brighter colour and healthier looking result. The gum margin is protected by the dentist by painting on a protective layer, which is activated by a blue light. Once the process is finished
19Please mention Edgbaston Directory when responding to adverts
the gel can be washed off. To maintain the colour, a home kit will need to be used. A combination of both products will result in immediate and long-term colour stability.
For those who have heavy staining and calculus, a pre-treatment scale and polish from the dental hygienist may be necessary to aid the whitening process.
Internal Whitening:
This is a more specialised method, reserved mainly for patients who have discolouration due to nerve root damage. Peroxide is placed within the tooth through a small syringe and a temporary dressing is applied over the tooth. This method usually takes longer than external whitening, with results being achieved within a few days. In some cases it may even take several weeks. The result is assessed by the dentist at regular intervals, and the process will be repeated if necessary.
What are the benefits of tooth whitening?
Whitening is now relatively cheap and easily accessible from your dentist. The main benefit is a healthier looking smile without removing any of the tooth structure. Whitening is a much more conservative approach to changing a smile compared to crowns and veneers, as these methods result in changing the shape of the tooth.

Local lottery supports local charitiesLast year TLC Lottery donated £126,000 to Birmingham St. Mary’s Hospice - enough to fund around 4,500 hours of care.
That covers nursing care, physiotherapy, meals, dressings and medication which are delivered round-the-clock, 365 days a year, to people from across Birmingham and Sandwell.
Each year the charity supports around 1,000 patients and at any one time is providing care to 300 people. The Hospice delivers its services through a network of palliative care doctors, clinical nurse specialists and physiotherapists, who support patients at home, at the charity’s inpatient unit and the Day Hospice in Selly Park.
TLC Lottery’s funding helps the Hospice to support relatives during
bereavement through the work of its Family and Carer Support Team. These Staff and volunteers offer guidance and advice to those coping with loss.

Make a difference to the work of your churchHow you can make a lasting difference to the work of your church? Perhaps you could consider a legacy in your will.
The Diocese of Birmingham has published a leaflet encouraging giving to the Church by means of legacies. These have a significant impact across the diocese and reflect the spirit of Christian generosity. Legacies help in many ways, from ensuring there is clergy living and working in disadvantaged areas, to maintaining the beautiful buildings.
Making a will and reviewing it regularly makes good practical sense too. It gives you peace of mind and ensures your
wishes are known and carried out after your death. Drawing up a will and leaving a gift to your church is simple and will have far-reaching benefits. If you would like help setting out or updating a will please contact Tyndallwoods Solicitors in Edgbaston.

Urban Veg: launch event 28 SeptemberIt all started back in April 2011 when staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to create a vegetable plot in Winterbourne’s walled garden. The project was a huge success and plans have been afoot since its completion to develop the work further.
And so Urban Veg, championed by urban food journalist Alys Fowler, is being launched as a project dedicated to promoting urban food production through demonstration spaces, training courses and drop in sessions.
The launch event will be on Friday 28 September from 2-9pm, when the garden will come alive with demonstrations and activities all related to Urban Veg’s work.
The site, which may be familiar to some as the old BBC Gardener’s World garden, will welcome local food producers, food stalls and an array of activities to inspire even the most gardening-averse to think about growing their own.

some healthy BBQ treats and pick up some recipes as you tuck in.
Also attending the event will be staff from the NHS, 60 of whom will be trained by Urban Veg to become Primary Care Trust cluster champions in food growing, with a health check stand to make sure you’re in tip top condition.
Ever wondered why some foods make you feel fab but can also make you fat? You can find out why some foods affect your mood. Other interactive stands include ‘What is Taste?’ Royal Society Chemists invite you to try their taste test. Nature’s pharmacy - try some old fashioned remedies, picked straight from the larder and herb patch.
And if that isn’t enough, there will also be a chance to sign up for upcoming courses, meet local groups tackling
these issues and find out more about how to start growing your own whether you have a box, balcony, garden or field. This event also takes place in association with Brum Dine with Me, EU Researchers Day, where there will be many other food themed events across the University and beyond.
