ECU Corporation Safety-related Chillers About our Teaming Partner Curtiss-Wright Nuclear and ECU are teamed to design and manufacture application-specific, safety-related chillers and equipment for nuclear plants worldwide. Utilizing ECU’s chiller design and manufacturing capabilities and Curtiss-Wright Nuclear’s commercial grade dedication and equipment qualification expertise, we are capable of providing OEM replacement, reverse engineered, and custom designed chillers. Essential chillers can be custom designed for a specific location within the power plant to replace existing units. Our cost effective design uses small modular self-contained refrigeration units that can be assembled into a larger skid for higher capacities. This concept allows for smaller packages to be manufactured and tested in the factory then they can be moved and installed into confined spaces within the power plant. Multiple small units allow for better control and built in redundancy. Most existing chillers are designed for maximum accident condition which can be four to five times greater than normal winter requirements. The modular concept allows for better control of partial load by using multiple smaller compressors instead of one very large one. Proven electro-mechanical devices for control and operation of the unit eliminates the added cost of maintaining a program for safety-related software to operate the chiller. Non-safety digital PLC can be offered to gather system data for maintenance and trending information using existing control connections, thus eliminating a complete digital upgrade expense.
