An Inquisition being taken in 1270, on the death of Roger de Quincy ear! of Winton, he was found to die seised of one quarter of a knight's fee here in Shearfby, of the yearly value of es. which Roger de Chaucombs held; though I am inclined to chink this carl had larger possessions here ; for by a roll, drawn up in the subsequent reign of king Edward I. it is evident that this manor (or rather township) was of two fees ; which record I have here transcribed from Mr. Burton,' who doubtless had seen the original, or a faithful transcript from it: "Shevefby est deduobisfeodis, Wintonie ScMarmion. This Roll seems to be the return made by an inquest or jury convened together for ascertaining and de- scribing the quality and tepure of this place, and the words terra geldabiles are worthy some observation. They seem to import lands that were liable to pay a tax or tribute; but what land shall we find that, in one fense or other, is not subject to the payment of such impositions? It must therefore have a farther signification ; and in an old MS. quoted by Manley 6 , geldabiles terra are such lands as are sub diJlriSlione curia vicecomitis; and the words das auxilio vkeco- tnitis, ai the latter end of tins roH, affuid reasonable foundation to think we must understand the words of this sentence in that fense here: sometimes lands may, indeed, be said to be non geldabiles, when they are eccle/iÆ donatcn The Roll of king Edward I. mentions the Knights Hospitallers of Jerusalem to have had one carucatfe of land here j but of whose donation, or at what time it was made, I have not been able yet to discover* The abbot and convent of St. Mary de Gratis at Leicester had the privilege of fishing in the great pool of Groby four times in a year, on the eve of the tour festivals of the Virgin Mary; which they com- muted with Roger de §uincy, lord of Groby, for an annual payment secured to them from the lordships of Hemington and Shevesby; as appears by the fol- lowing extract from their antient Register : " Schevifby capella est de Knaproft, habens sepuf- turam, & capellanum continue resideiuem ; & omnia fa- cramentalia excepte crifmate, ut in Matriculo Episoopi.
