What makes the win over Geneseo even more impressive is that the Knights entered the game on a six-game win streak, averaging 5.2 goals per game. A YEAR AGO, TO THE DATE Carter Shinkaruk ’16 scored the game’s opening goal just 42 seconds into play against No. 11 SUNY Geneseo. It is the quickest goal scored by an Elmira player since last year, oddly enough, on January 11, 2013 when Shinkaruk scored the game’s first goal just 20 seconds into play against Morrisville State. CAREER HIGH FOR COLLINS Sophomore forward Michael Collins ’16 tallied a pair of goals against Buffalo State. His two goals are the most he has scored in a single- game this season, and the most since January 12, 2013 when he scored two goals against Morrisville State. CAREER HIGH FOR WHITTLE Greg Whittle ’16 also posted a career high this weekend. The second- year talent registered three assists in Elmira’s win over SUNY Gen- eseo. Whittle’s previous high was two assists, which he recorded two times last year. 18-save perioD for maglioccoFor the third time this season, rookie netminder Sal Magliocco ’17 made 18 saves in a single period. Against SUNY Geneseo, Magliocco was pep-pered with 18 shots in the first period but denied each attempt. In earlier games this season against Oswego State and the first matchup against Buf-falo State, Magliocco also made 18 saves in a single period. His 18 saves is the most made by an EC goaltender since last year’s season finale when Darren MacDonald ’13 made 20 saves in the first period against Manhat-tanville College.
BreakouT season for Ten vaanholTJarryd ten Vaanholt ’16 is leading the Soaring Eagles in points with 16 on six goals and a team best 10 assists. His 16 points are four more than he accumulated all of last season.
naTion’s Top poWer-plaYThe Elmira men have been on a tear when they are skating with a man advantage. EC is scoring on 32.3% of their power play opportunities this season, totaling 21 power play scores on 65 opportunities. Elmira is the only ECAC West team to rank inside the Top 10 in the nation in power play efficiency.
noT since 2010-11Elmira’s 5-1 win over SUNY Geneseo is their largest margin of victory against a nationally ranked opponent since the 2010-11 season. During the 2010-11 campaign, EC posted three four-goal wins against nationally ranked opponents in No. 10 Utica College, No. 14 Hobart College, and No. 14 Neumann University. However, Elmira’s 5-1 win over Utica that season was the most similar to this year’s win over SUNY Geneseo, not only because of the final score, but also that Elmira was unranked at the time.
looking for roaD WinsOf Elmira’s seven wins this season, five have come at the Murray Athletic Center. Elmira’s other two wins obviously came away from home, one in a true road game and the other at a neutral site. EC is 1-4 playing in true road games and will look to improve on that record against Cortland.
WhaT conference are We in?Elmira has a storied history in the ECAC West, but their games of late have all been against SUNYAC teams. Tuesday night’s game against Cortland State will be Elmira’s third straight SUNYAC opponent and is one of five straight Elmira will face before closing out the season against ECAC West opponents.
saul aT elmira vs. The sunYacSince his arrival in 2009, Coach Saul has seen success against teams in the SUNYAC Conference, going 25-17-2. His best year against the SUNYAC was in 2010-11 when his Soaring Eagles went 7-2-1.
all-Time vs. corTlanD sTaTeElmira has been nothing short of dominant against the Red Dragons of Cortland State, owning an unblemished 38-0-0 record in the all-time se-ries. Cortland is one of two opponents that Elmira has played 10 or more times and has not lost to - the other being St. Bonaventure University. EC’s last meeting against Cortland occurred during the 2011-12 season, a game in which the Soaring Eagles scored a 6-2 victory.
When ec scores firsT...Elmira is a perfect 3-0 this sea-son when they have scored first. Over the last three seasons, El-mira has gone 18-9-2 when scor-ing first.

Three of Cortland’s wins have come against common opponents - Fredonia State, Brockport State, and Nazareth College. As of late, Cortland has struggled, going 1-6-1 in their last eight games with their only win coming against the Golden Flyers of Nazareth, 5-1.
corTlanD sTaTe’s scoring opTionsCortland has four players with 10 or more points this season with junior forward Nick Zappia leading the team with 17 points on six goals and 11 assists. Seniors Adam Bevilacqua, Mike Henrici, and A.J. Moyer are also in double-digits in points. Bevilacqua is second on the team with 13 points, Henrici is third with 12 points and Moyer is fourth with 11.
senior neTminDersCortland has a pair of senior goaltenders who have each seen plenty of time between the pipes this season. Lyle Rocker has seen the most min-utes thus far, playing in 10 games, owning a .914 save percentage and leads the team with 315 saves. Mark Balkwill has made seven appearances in net this season, making 197 stops. Both players have recorded a pair of wins this year, however, Rocker has gotten the start in Cortland’s last six games.
noT in 40 YearsLast season’s leading goal scorer, Carter Shinkaruk ’16 became the first freshman to lead the Soaring Eagles in goals scored. Shinkaruk scored nine goals in his rookie campaign and will surely be a force on offense in 2013-14.
a sign of Things To come?Last season the Soaring Eagles posted a 10-16 overall record, their first losing season since the 2004-05 season. Following the 2004-05 season, the EC men marched all the way to semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
