Their most recent championship came in the 2010- 11 season when the Soaring Eagles defeated Neumann University 5-1 in the title game. An ECAC West championship in 2013-14 would give the Purple and Gold the most titles in ECAC West history, a mark currently shared with former conference rival, RIT. EC’S BACK, BACK AGAIN Elmira is back in the ECAC West Tournament finals for the first time in three years. For Elmira, this year’s championship appearance is their 15th in college history, with their first ECAC West Champion- ship appearance coming in the 1977-78 season. NOT SINCE 2005-06 This weekend’s ECAC West Championship game against Utica Col- lege marks the third meeting between the Soaring Eagles and the Pioneers in the ECAC West Tournament. The first meeting dates back to the 2004-05 season when Utica edged Elmira 4-3 in double overtime. However, the most recent meeting in 2005-06 favors EC as the Purple and Gold defeated the Pioneers 3-2 in the ECAC West Championship game. That same year, Elmira defeated Hobart in the conference semifinals, 4-3. GOING FULL CIRCLE For the members of the Class of 2014, this Saturday’s ECAC West Championship brings back memories of the 2010-11 championship team. elmira’s eCaC title historyElmira has played in a total of 15 ECAC West Championship games dat-ing back to the 1977-78 season. EC has won the title nine times, six of those wins occurring on Elmira’s home ice at the Murray Athletic Center while the other three on the road. Of Elmira’s three road wins in the finals, two have come against RIT and the other against Utica during the 2005-06 season. However, Elmira’s win over Utica was on neutral ice as the game was played at Manhattanville College.
elmira’s reCorD in eCaC title gamesThe Soaring Eagles are 9-6 in ECAC West Championship games. Elmira is 6-3 playing in title games at the Murray Athletic Center and 3-3 playing anywhere else. In the home games, Elmira has outscored their opponents 41-30 but have been outscored on the road 17-19.
one goal affairsElmira and Utica have played each other three times this season, with just one goal deciding the victor in each game. In the three games, Utica out-scored Elmira 13-12 and outshot EC 141-88. However, Elmira went 3-for-17 on power play opportunities while the Pioneers were a dismal 0-for-21.
players to watChBased on their last three meetings, there are a handful of players to keep an eye on this weekend. Elmira’s Brian Depp ’16 totaled five points on two goals and three assists. Of his five goals, one was a power play goal and the other came as the game-winner in overtime. For Utica, Ridge Garbutt is the one to focus on as he also registered five points on two goals and three assists. Garbutt scored the game-winner in Utica’s 4-3 win, the first meeting of the season between the two squads.
previous meeting’s goal BreakDownA key period for Elmira in Saturday’s game will be the first. Utica has outscored Elmira 5-3 in the first period this year, all but making the dif-ference in the outcomes. The Pioneers have taken a lead into the first in-termission two out of the three games, with the other first period ending in a tie. The second and third periods have been dead-even as both teams have scored four goals in both periods.
hats-off to DepperBrian Depp ’16 scored a career-high three goals in Elmira’s 5-3 win over Hobart College. Depp’s three-goal night is his first hat trick of his two-year career. It is also Elmira’s third player to record a hat trick this season, marking the first time since the 2003-04 season that Elmira has had three different players register three or more goals. During the 2003-04 season, Elmira’s Justin Siebold ’05, Pierre Rivard ’04, Scott Campbell ’04, Craig Macdonald ’05, Brandon Rose ’06, and Lawne Snyder ’04 all had games with three or more goals.
pims galoreIn the ECAC West Semifinals against Hobart, the Soaring Eagles and the Statesmen were whistled 20 times for 84 combined penalty minutes. The 84 penalty minutes are the highest combined total this season and the most since November 16, 2012 when Elmira and Utica College commit-ted 34 penalties for a total of 106 penatly minutes.

2013-14 SOARING EAGLES ICE HOCKEY ECAC West Championship: Elmira College at Utica College
eC on the roaDA quick glance at Elmira’s road record and one might think they are just so-so when playing on foreign ice as EC is 6-5-1 in true away games and 7-6-1 in all games played away from the Murray Athletic Center. However, Elmira does boast a 5-1-1 road record against ECAC West teams this sea-son.
on utiCa’s home iCeElmira has faced Utica 18 times on Utica’s home ice since their first meet-ing back in 2001-02. The Soaring Eagles are 8-6-4 in those 18 games, out-scoring Utica 75-64. Elmira’s largest win on Utica’s home ice is an 8-1 win back in the 2009-10 season. For Utica, their largest win over Elmira at home happened last year when the Pioneers defeated EC, 11-2.
top 10 sCorerJosh Burnell ’15 has been the go-to guy all season for the Soaring Eagles, and for good reason. The third-year skater is eighth in the nation in points per game, averaging 1.36 points per game. He is the only ECAC West player to be ranked inside the top 25 in that category.
also top 10 sCoringAs a team, Elmira is seventh in the country in scoring offense, averaging 4.00 goals per game. The Soaring Eagles are the only ECAC West team ranked inside the top 15 in that category.
thirD in the nationWith 10 power play goals, Josh Burnell ’15 boasts the nation’s third most power play goals. He is one of just three skaters in all of NCAA Division III men’s ice hockey to score double-digit power play goals and one of seven in all of NCAA men’s ice hockey.
CoaCh of the yearAfter guiding his team to a 14-10-1 regular season record, a 9-5-1 mark in the ECAC West, and the second seed in the ECAC West Tournament, Head Coach Aaron Saul ’98 was voted the ECAC West Coach of the Year for the 2013-14 season. This is the third time Saul has won this award since his return to his alma mater in 2009. In total, Saul has claimed four Coach of the Year awards during his coaching career, earning SUNYAC Coach of the Year honors during the 2008-09 season with SUNY Pots-dam.
sCouting utiCaUtica enters Saturday night’s ECAC West Championship game with a 16-6-4 overall record and a USCHO national ranking of 13. The Pio-neers are playing some of their best hockey as of late, going 6-1 in their last seven games. Utica’s only loss during that stretch came during the regular season finale when the Pioneers dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Manhattanville College. Utica is led by the 2013-14 ECAC West Player of the Year, Trever Hertz. Hertz has tallied a team-high 25 points on eight goals and a team-leading 17 assists. He is one of three Pioneers with 20 or more points, including Ridge Garbutt who leads Utica in goals scored with 11, and Jon Gaffney.
