the time the world is certifiedio-free, Rotarys contributionsthe global polio eradication

    ort will exceed US$850 mil-n

To date, 122 nations aroundthe world have benefited fromPolioPlus grants for polio im-munization and eradicationefforts.

From the launch of global initia-tive in 1988, 5 million people, who would otherwise be para-lyzed, will be walking becausethey are immunized against polio.

In 1995, Rotary Internationallaunched a task force to advocatethe cause of polio eradication to

    donor governments .

    Frequently, friends ask

    whether Rotarians receive

    special businessbenefitsfrom

    their

    Rotary

    membership.

    Should Rotarians expect a

    special discount or some

    preferential service just

    because they are dealing with

    a f e l l o w R o t a r i a n ?

    The answer is clearly "no."

    The Rotary Manual of Proce

    dure expressly states the

    Rotaryposition

    on

    this

    matter.

    The policy, originally approved

    by theRIBoardofDirectors in

1933, is that in business and

    professional relations "a

    Rotarian should not expect,

and far less should he ask for,

    more consideration or advan

    tages from a fellow Rotarian

    than

    the

    latter

    would

    give

    to

    any other business or

    professional associate with

    whom he has business

    relations." Over 50 years ago

    the concept was expressed

    that "true friends demand

    nothing of one another, and

    anyabuseoftheconfidenceof

    friendship for profit is foreign

    to

    the

    spirit

    of

    Rotary."

On the other hand, if new or

    increased business comes as

    the naturalresultof friendship

    createdinRotary,itisthesame

    normal development which

    takesplaceoutsideofRotaryas

well as inside, so it is not an

    infringement

    on

    the

    ethics

    of

    R o t a r y m e m b e r s h i p .

    Itisimportantto remember

    that the primary purpose of

    Rotary membership is to

    provideeach memberwitha

    unique opportunity to serve

    others,andmembership isnot

    intended as a means for

    personal

    profit

    or

    special

    privileges.

    HistoricallyRotariansperpetu

    atedamyththatRotaryshould

    not seek publicity, but rather

let our good works speak for

    themselves. A 1923 policy

    stating that "publicity should

not be the primary goal of a

    Rotary club in selecting an

    activity"ofcommunityservice,

    was frequently interpreted to

    mean that Rotary clubs should

    avoid publicity and public

    relations

    efforts.

    Actually,

    the 1923 statement further

observed that "as a means of

    extending Rotary's influence,

    proper publicity should be

    given to a worthwhile project

    w e l l c a r r i e d o u t . "

    A more modern public

    relations philosophy was

    adopted in the mid 1970s

    which affirms that "good

    publicity, favorablepublicrela

tions and a positive image are

    desirable and essential goals

for Rotary" if it is to foster

    understanding, appreciation

and support for its Object and

    programs and to broaden

    Rotary's service to humanity.

    Active

    public

    relations

    is

    vital

    to the success of Rotary.

    A service project well carried

out is considered one of the

    finest public relations

    messagesofRotary.Itisessen

    tial that Rotary clubs make

    every effort to inform the

    public about their service

    projects which have been

    w e l l p e r f o r m e d .

    As Rotary clubs and districts

    consider effective public

    relations, it is important to

    rememberthatwhenRotarians

    thinkofRotary,wethinkofour

    noble goals and motives. But

    when

    the

    world

    thinks

    of

    Rotary, itcanonlythinkofour

    actions and the service we

    haveperformed.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu said Rotary'sdedication to peace in the world makes God smile.During his keynote address Thursday, 18 June, atthe Rotary World Peace Symposium, Tutu sharedhow he envisions God looking down on His crea-tion and crying when He sees all the bad things His
