N S E W Welcome to Winchelsea Winchelsea is an historic town situated on the beautiful Sussex coast. Positioned on Iham Hill it has spectacular views to the sea and inland across the Brede Valley. The town is one of the best preserved medieval Bastide towns in Britain, founded in the late 13th century by Edward I as a port. It replaced ‘Old Winchelsea’ which was lost to the rising sea. What you can see and do: Lying between Rye and Hastings is a beautiful area of countryside and coastline with leisure options to suit all interests. The great outdoors: There is an extensive network of short- and long-distance walking trails, national cycling routes, water sports and nature reserves. For the less energetic there are long beaches, secluded countryside, places to picnic or country pubs to while away the afternoon. Family days out: South East England is renowned for its gardens and vineyards but there are also castles, steam railways and a host of other family attractions within a short distance of Winchelsea. Hastings and Rye: If you wish to take a break from the countryside, simply hop on a train or bus to the nearby historic Cinque Ports of Hastings and Rye with their museums and family attractions, shops, restaurants and nightlife.
