First of all I would like to place a few words to my dear readers andfollowers, your comments and requests are greatly appreciated. Its forthose picture perfect moments that I love doing what I am doing! 16 Yearsin design and 8 in the publishing business brought me strength and a smileday after day! Thank you and keep on reading our publications.
At some point in our lives, most of us will haveto deal with selling the home we've lived in formany years and moving into somethingsmaller. But, giving up our beloved familyhome and downsizing into something smalleris always a difficult decision. Many seniors make the mistake of waiting toolong to move into a smaller home. Sometimes, they put off downsizing until a death or anillness occurs. At that point, the move maybecome an absolute necessity and they couldbe forced to sell their home quickly and moveinto a retirement home. Having to sell quicklyis always a disadvantage for home sellersbecause there's no time to properly preparethe property for sale. And, as you know, sellinga home in "as is" condition leaves lots ofmoney on the table. Also, when people areforced to move quickly they often don't havetime to find the perfect living situation and theymay have to compromise. It's easy to understand why some homeown-ers stay put longer than they should. We allhave a strong emotional attachment to ourhome and the thought of making a retirementmove can be very depressing. However, it's always best to look at thepositive side of life. There are many benefits toa low maintenance lifestyle. Time and moneyare freed up for other activities such ashobbies and travel. An easier living situation, without stairs to climb and with assistancereadily available if needed, is popular withmany seniors who don't want to be a burdenon their loved ones.Advance planning will greatly reduce thetrauma of downsizing to a smaller home. Doyour research and figure out exactly whereyou'd like to move before selling your existinghome. Sometimes it's a good idea to move intoyour new living situation before selling yourexisting home. That way you can convenientlyprepare it to sell for the highest price possible. It also makes it easier to dispose of unwantedpersonal property. Many senior housing situations have waitinglists. By deciding where you want to move
before you have to sell, you can choose thelifestyle option that will make you the mosthappy. Then, while waiting for your new placeto become available, you can prepare yourhome for sale. You'll be ready to put it on themarket when the time comes to move.Get lots of help when you're downsizing yourhome and don't try to do it all by yourself. Thisis the time to call on family and close friendsfor assistance. And be sure to get goodfinancial advice. Choose a good real estateagent who can help coordinate the salesprocess, assist with the property enhance-ment, and put you in touch with packers, movers and repair people.QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF: Whenyou're thinking of downsizing to a smallerhome, here are some important questions toask.• Does your home provide the best environ-ment for the physical needs you have?• Are you having trouble performing the routinemaintenance of your large home?• Is it difficult finding workers and servicepeople to help you take care of your existinghome?• Is your home isolating your from friends whoalready moved to a smaller home?• Are finances keeping you from enjoying thehome you've loved for so many years?• Do you feel you have adequate securitywhere you are?• Do you feel you have proper access tomedical care in your present home?
HINT: It may not always be possible to timeyour move to coincide with the most favorablemarket conditions. But, if you can choosewhen to sell, it's better to downsize in a seller'smarket. You'll pay a bit more for your newhome than you would in a softer market. But,since you're selling a more expensive home inthe same market, you'll come out dollarsahead.

Autumn 2012I love colour! And everyone who knows me know that fall is my favourite timeof year. I love the fresh breeze (with no humidity) and the vibrant fall coloursthat are everywhere in the countryside. I love decorating a seasonal table, whether it's simple or ornate, the visual appeal comforts me. Centerpieces don'talways have to go on a dining or kitchen table, you can place them on your coffee table, hall table or even your mantel.
Liz’ Tips
Liz’ TipsBy: Liz Quinn of Design’in-Mind Maximum Impact with Minimal InvestmentBrockville, Ontario
Here's some inspiration for you:Want an easy way to add a pop of colour to your table?
This colourful autumn wreath display is a greataddition to the already popular hurricane vase. You can enjoy this look, not just forThanksgiving but, for an everyday look throughfall..
The hurricane vase makes this a safer alternativethan tapered candles for your table display;place the leaves outside the vase and tucked justbelow and sides of base plate to ensure no melted wax touches the leaves.
With the temperatures dropping, texture andrich jewel tones replace showy blooms andvibrant colours as the mainstays of autumnaccessorizing. Update your rooms with dazzlingfoliage, seasonal pumpkins and fruits, texturedfabrics, patterns and the warm colours of theseason.
If you like the simplicity of tall candles, tryadding autumn leaves (real or artificial) alongthe table for a relaxed and casual look.
Decorative Table Display Ideas :
Showcase the full range of fall colours. Achievea modern look by placing some in tall vintagejars or rest a few in modest glass compotes withtheir grassy tops exposed for texture and shape.Their deep red and yellow colour looks especially rich atop dark wood and antique furniture.
Add some filler to vases, trays and bowls thatyou already have around the house. You canalso add ribbon, bushels of wheat, acorns, driedcorn, assorted nuts in the shell (chestnuts, walnuts, etc), flowers or gourds to add somegreat texture and colour. It’s an inexpensivedecorating accessory that can work throughoutNovember and into December. If you're not intothe garland on the table, you can opt for a leafoption. For the holidays, swap the nuts for cranberries.
Entertaining friends and family? Want todisplay an elegant fall living room?
Clear off tables and one or two shelves on bookcases or built-ins to provide spots forguests to place glasses and plates. Group hurri-cane lanterns in the fireplace opening; they giveoff a warm glow without the heat or hazard of anopen fire in a room full of people. Replace abulky coffee table with multiple cocktail-sizedtables, which take up less floor space and can beeasily moved. Replace one or two pictures withan autumn wreath or place a colourful wreath onthe inside of your living room window to bringin some of the fall colours into the room..
No fireplace?
No problem. Add a side table or sofa tableagainst a wall. Scatter some fall leaves on thesurface. Place a group of different height candles; preferably in hurricane vases for safety.Add a few acorns and you have a great displayfor your guests.
Colourful Autumn Vignette
Exhibit freshly cut foliage in vintage bottles.Maple leaves stay fresh for up to three weeks.Fill bottles with tepid water, and then cut thebottom of the branches on an angle. To helpthem take in water, use a sharp knife to slice upthe middle of each branch about an inch.Replace the water when it becomes murky.
Apricot & Gold Table Setting
Set a classic fall table with linens, dishes andaccessories in these rich hues. This timelesscombination confers elegance and provides theperfect backdrop for a harvest centrepiece ofpumpkins, gourds and decorative kale. Createtiers to give the display visual interest: stacklarger pumpkins and gourds on a cake platter, perch the kale in shallow bowls of water andscatter mini pumpkins on the table.
Neutral Console Table Display
Keep it simple. Showcase a natural wheat sheaf.
For a dramatic flared shape, hold pre-boundbundles at the top (just below the grains) andbottom, and then twist in opposite directionssimultaneously. Knot a thick brown velvet ribbon around the pivot point, keeping the endslong so they spill onto the table.
For safety reasons, please be careful withlighted candles nearby this, or any, table display.
Deep Living Room Colours
Create a cosy vibe by piling throw pillows inbotanical prints and rich fall colours onto a solidsofa. Avoid being too matchy-matchy: mixingmotifs in a range of shades looks extra lush. – Ifyou have a printed sofa, consider a mix of richsolid-colour cushions.
Want to be adventurous? You can continue thewarming trend by covering bare floors with athick wool rug in a cranberry hue; flip it over fora vintage needlepoint look or place it plush sideup for a luxurious feel underfoot.
Want a neutral but warm look for the bedroom?
Cosy up bedrooms with toasty-warm wool blankets, sumptuous velvet pillows and stripedbedding in brown shades from beige to choco-late. Chamomile-coloured walls ensure a sunnyfeel during grey winter days and are neutralenough to work with most decorating schemes.Add a little life with a quirky gooseberry wreathand a small pitcher of wildflowers bedside.
Here’s a “do it yourself” leaf display.
Press pretty fall leaves and display them in vintage frames of various sizes. Unify differentframes by painting them white or gold, and thenwrap any existing mats with linen in earthy neutral tones. (Wrap the linen snugly around themats and secure at back with glue or double-sided tape. Then, cut an X from corner to corneracross the picture opening and fold the resultingtriangles of fabric back and affix to the mat.)
