INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Matt Bollant joins EIU as the ninth head coach in program history following a five year stint as head coach at Illinois. In his first season with the Illini, Bollant led them to the post season for the first time in three years finishing with a winning Big Ten record for the first time in ten seasons. Before his time at Illinois, he was head coach at Green Bay. He guided the Phoenix to five straight Horizon League titles and had four straight trips to the NCAA tournament. While at Green Bay his record was 148-19 overall and 85-5 in the HL. He was named Horizon League Coach of the Year four times. Bollant started his head coaching career at Bryan College in 2002. He led the Lady Lions to four straight NAIA tournaments. Bollant holds a 343-149 overall record as he takes over the Panthers who are coming off a 9-19 losing season.
The Panthers competed in a two game tournament at Saint Joseph’s over the holiday weekend. They suffered losses to Saint Joseph’s and Delaware falling to 1-4 on the season. EIU fell to Saint Joseph’s 80-62. Nehls scored a team high 13 points vs. the Hawks. She also grabbed six rebounds while McRae added nine points for the Panthers. EIU also fell to Delaware 66-37. Lennox was named to the All-Tournament team as she scored a team high 16 points with six rebounds and three assists. Smith had four points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Panther loss. EIU shot a season low in their game vs. Delaware with 18 percent from the field and only nine percent from behind the arc.
Cleveland State sits just above the .500 mark with a record of 3-2. The Vikings split their two tournament games over the holiday weekend going 1-1. They fell 80-64 vs. Saint Louis and grabbed a 54-45 win over Louisiana. Cleveland State has three players currently scoring in double figures. Ashanti Abshaw leads the team with 21.8 points per game. Khayla Livingston averages 15.2 points and 5.4 assists per game. Olivia Voskuhl averages 12 points per game and is the team leading rebounder with 7.8 boards per game. The Vikings other wins this season were vs. Eastern Michigan and Marshall. They fell in their home opener to Ball State 76-64.
Cleveland State leads the all-time series record 4-1 and the teams last met in the 2016-17 season. The Vikings defeated the Panthers 66-56. Abshaw scored 18 points in the Vikings victory. While Lennox had 15 and Tellez had 12 for the Panthers.

• The Panthers shot a season low 18.8 percent from the field and 9.5 percent from behind the arc. Lennox and Nehls were the only two to connect from three point range vs. Delaware in 21 attempts.
• Back-to-back three pointers by Tellez and Berry sparked a 14-0 run to start the third quarter vs. Saint Joseph’s bring the game within four points. Nehls also added five points in the run scoring on two jumpers and one free throw.
• Taylor Steele has recorded at least one steal in the last three games. In the Evansville game, Steele recorded a career high 10 points and recorded her second steal of the season. While at the Thanksgiving tournament, she recorded another steal in 22 minutes of play. She also added three points, one assist, and two rebounds. Steele recorded a game high of three steals in 24 minutes with three point, one assist, and two rebounds vs. Delaware.
• Lennox leades the OVC in minutes played. Over the first five games of the season, she played a total of 181 minutes averaging just over 36 minutes per game.
• In addidtion to minutes, Lennox is also on the assist and assist/turnover ratio leader list. She ranks second behind Morehead State’s Darianne Seward for assists. Lennox averages 5.0 assists per game. She is ranked third for assist/turnover ratio with a ratio of 2.5.
• EIU continues to struggle on the boards. Saint Joseph’s collected eight offensive rebounds in the first quarter against the Panthers as they walked away with a 42-25 advantage. EIU also fell behind on the boards against Delaware 57-41. Smith and McRae grabbed eight each in the game vs. Delaware.
• The seven returning players are joined this season by seven freshman. Three players joing the 2017-18 squad from overseas. Grace McRae and Lana Marov both come to EIU from Australia, while Camino Tellez joins us from Madrid, Spain.
