Earthquake Relief Work 2015 (April & May) On the 25 th of April 2015 a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal with the epicenter at Lamjung. Dozens of aftershocks followed, including a 6.7 magnitude earthquake on 26 th April 2015. It was the most powerful disaster to strike Nepal since 1934. Though the earthquake was felt all over Nepal but it most badly affected thirteen district of Nepal where until now more than 8029people have lost their lives and more than17,784 (10 May 2015) are injured. Millions have become homeless and lost their beloved ones and are now struggling to have food, shelter and drinking water. One of the major programs of Action Works Nepal (AWON) is humanitarian support, where AWON had always focused on the support for the survivors. Hence, immediately after the earthquake AWON immediately took action and the first team was deployed on 27 th May, two days after the earthquake. 27 th April 2015 AWON distributed noodles, drinking water and biscuits for 50 people in landless communities residing in the bank of Baghmati river of Thapathali. 29th April 2015 AWON organized meetings for emergency response to the most affected area. The meeting decided to form an Emergency Response Committee (ERC) under the leadership of the Founder, President Radha Paudel. (Though Ms. Paudel was in Jumla she was connecting with us via phone and committed to join the team as early as possible). AWONdecided to deploy staff, volunteers (both technical and non technical staff) for relief work in the most affected areas outside valley. AWON visited TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj and coordinated with Nursing Director, Kopila Palek Shrestha, to support the team in this crisis time.

30th April 2015 AWON team started purchasing, collecting relief materials and call for various technical and non technical volunteers through its network, social sites and websites. As per the request from TU Teaching Hospital 5 BSC Nurses were provided to support for two weeks, 10 BP instruments.
1st May 2015 AWON coordinated with Ministry of Public Health, District Public Health Office to support relief items such as tents, sleeping mattress, clothes (men, women, adolescents girls, children, and newborn/infants), blankets, first aid kits (essential medicines, sanitary pads, facemask, water purifier, soap and bandage with utilization information sheets), food items (beaten rice, noodles, biscuits, mixtures, salt, lactogen). The AWON relief team was lead by Ms. Radha Paudel and Mr. Bharat Wasti and more than 50 volunteers and staff were deployed for the relief work. AWON supported 87 HHs of Shipapokhari village development committee, Bhandarithok village with a total population of 430 of which 245 were women and 185 men. As 95% of the houses were collapsed, many people were living under open sky.

2nd May 2015 During these field visits AWON found many needy villages with people who had not received any relief from humanitarian organizations or government. AWON therefore decided to support two more most badly affected village with indigenous communities. AWON provided support to SipaPokhari Village Development Committee, Gairee Gaun Mija tole ward no 4 with total household of 67 of which 53 HHs were from Tamang, 13 HHs were Dalits and 1 HH was Chhetri. The total population of the village was almost 600 persons AWON distributed 67 sets of relief items with food items (beaten rice, noodles, biscuits, mixtures, salt, lactogen), non-food items (tents, sleeping mattress, clothes (men, women, adolescents girls, children, and newborn/infants), blankets, first aid kits (essential medicines, sanitary pads, facemask, water purifier, soap and bandage with utilization information sheets). AWON also deployed more than 50 volunteers and staff for relief work. as99% of the houses were collapsed, many people were living under open sky. AWON spent USD 2,200for thisrelief work. 3rd May 2015 AWON deployed two relief teamsto Kavre district. One team visited Dewapur Gairi Bisaune ward no. 6, 3 with the total household 43 covering 300 populations. AWON distributed relief materials with total package for 43 houses. Another team visited Anaikot 6 (recently panchkhal 12) and supported to 54 needy HHs with total population of 315 with relief materials.
