E-Commerce Definition

Electronic commerce, commonly known as e-commerce or eCommerce, is a type of industry where the buying and selling of products or services is conducted over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks.

History of E-Commerce

1960-1982 - Paving the way for electric commerce was the development of the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). EDI replaced traditional mailing and faxing of documents with a digital transfer of data from one computer to another.

1982-1990 - It was apparent from the beginning that B2B online shopping would be commercially lucrative but B2C would not be successful until the later widespread use of PC’s and the World Wide Web, also known as, the Internet.

1999 - Over 9 million Minitel terminals had been distributed and were connecting approximately 25 million users in this interconnected network of machines. The Minitel system peaked in 1991 and slowly met its demise after the success of the Internet 3 years later.

At present - Currently, Amazon, Dell, Staples, Office Depot and HP are the 5 largest and most famous worldwide Internet retailers. There’s so much credit to be given to companies such as eBay and Amazon, which really began to lead the way in e- commerce

Types Of E-Commerce

B2B: It means business to business. It is the types of ecommerce in which buyer and seller, both are businesses. In this, one business is sells its products or services while other business buys these products or services. About 80% of ecommerce of this type.

Example- Intel selling microprocessor to Dell.B2B Sites: Alibaba.com

B2C: It means business to consumers. It is the type of ecommerce in which business sells its services or products to consumers, through internet or computer network.

Example- Dell Selling me a laptop. B23 Sites: icson.com

C2C: It means consumer to consumer. It is the type of e-commerce in which one consumer sells its products to other consumer, through internet or computer network.

B2G: It means business to government. It is a type of e-commerce in which business sells its services or products to government.

Example- Business pay taxes M-commerce: It means mobile Commerce, It is the buying and selling of

Some customers like to feel and touch products. Also, customers are resistant to the change from a real to a virtual store.

People do not yet sufficiently trust paperless, faceless transactions.

There is an increase amount of fraud on the Internet. Mechanical failures can cause unpredictable effects on the total

processes.

The reason behind are many but the main reason is that our country is not so developed and most people of our country are poor and uneducated. So it is natural that there are few customers who are interested in E-commerce. But this situation can possibly be changed if we develop our telecommunication infrastructure, government awareness and people mindset.

To make ecommerce successful in our country we need the help of all aspect of people as well as govt. and business industry to cope up or overcome the following limitations, Access to computer of household should be increased, The cost of using internet should be affordable to general people ,User of software should be more simple for the easier use , Its use should be made as easy as TV and newspaper so that it require unsophisticated skill.
