Reading Partners Needed Operation Christmas Child From Your Pastor
I recently met with Christine Messick, the Community Engagement
Manager for Reading Partners. She shared with me some of the success
of the Regional Reading Partner program this past school year as well as
results at AC Corcoran Elementary School.
During the 2018-2019 school year 925 volunteers served 813 students as
Reading Partners in Charleston area schools! Deer Park had 11 volunteers
serve 325 sessions! The “value” of those hours was estimated to be $8,265!
The relational impact is even greater! 91% of students in area schools
exceeded goals and 100% of students at AC Corcoran!
God is using the Deer Park “Heart4Schools” ministry to make a difference in
our community, in the lives of teachers and staff at AC Corcoran, and most
importantly, in the lives of children!
Please pray and ask God if He is leading you to serve as a Reading Partner
this year! Reading Partners commit to read and mentor a student for 1-2
hours each week. Training is provided. All you need to bring is your heart!
We will have an Info/Orientation meeting soon for anyone who is interested!
Talk to one of the Heart4Schools Team members or Reading Partners for
more information!
Immeasurably more!
Ephesians 3:14-21
It was really nice being back in the pulpit this past Sunday. I appreciate serving a church that allows their pastor time to rest and spend time away with his family. I have been eagerly anticipating the short sermon series from Paul’s letter to Philemon that I started on Sunday. This is a letter about forgiveness and restoration of a relationship. I believe that most of us will benefit from Paul’s message to Philemon as we consider all of our relationships.
Forgiveness is a gift from God and that modeled by Him through the life, death, and resurrection of His Son. Colossians 1:13-14 tells us that we have been delivered from the domain of darkness and delivered into His kingdom through Jesus. Verse 14, speaking about Jesus says, “in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sin.” God modeled forgiveness and He expects His children to follow His example by forgiving others.
As a reminder of what Jesus did for you and for me on the cross, we are to observe the Lord’s Supper. 1 Corinthians 11:24-25 tells us to take the bread and the cup “in remembrance” of Jesus’ sacrifice. Before coming to the Lord’s Supper, Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 11:27-28 to “examine ourselves” to ensure that we do not “eat the bread or drink the cup in an unworthy manner.”
On Sunday, August 11 we will be observing the Lord’s Supper during worship. I want to encourage you to spend time allowing the Lord to search your heart to reveal anything in your life that is not pleasing to Him and to turn away from whatever He reveals to you before coming to take the Lord’s Supper. Let us take the Lord’s Supper in a worthy manner.
I look forward to seeing you this Sunday morning in Sunday School at 9:45 and worship at 11:00.
I Love Being Your Pastor! Stephen
I hope everyone is doing well and staying cool this summer.
Our Go-Getter’s “Taste of Greenville” day trip is right around the corner.
Please plan to be here at the church on Monday, August 5th by 6:45AM.
This bus will be here ready to load at 7:00AM. We are looking forward to
seeing everyone and enjoying Greenville and their much talked about cui-
sine. You are welcome to bring a throw, pillow, and anything else for your
comfort on the bus. Carolina Tours will have water, soft drinks, and snacks
on the bus for us.
On August 13th at 2:00PM, our Go-Getter’s are planning to meet for lunch
at Cracker Barrel located at 7351 Mazyck Rd., North Charleston, off of Ash-
ley Phosphate Rd. This will be a fun time finding out what everyone has
been doing this summer and talking about our upcoming Go-Getter’s year
which starts on Tuesday, September 10th.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the August 13th luncheon because we
want to see you there!
Second Chance Ministries Free Yard Sale
The Free Yard Sale will be held Saturday, August 3rd (8:00AM-11:30AM). As always we will need volunteers for the event to keep tables organized and interact with our guests. At 11:00AM we will need volunteers for breakdown and packing of the remaining items. Most of all, we ask that you cover this ministry in prayer. We ask that God will bring those guests that He would have us serve and that God will be glorified through this event.
Each month we are collecting different items to help fill 550 shoeboxes for
Operation Christmas Child! Will you consider purchasing some items
while you are out and about? Please drop these items off in the Missions
Corner located in the Education Wing. Please contact Cindy Watts at
learning needle-work. On Thursday, August 8th at 6:30PM,
we will meet in the fellowship hall to needle-work, fellowship, and make
future plans to use our talents for outreach ministry. We will be creating for
nursing homes, mission trips, pregnancy centers, and other outreach ministries.
The first meeting will be Thursday, August 8th at 6:30PM in the fellowship
hall. For more information contact Denise Dawson at 843.901.4868.
