DUGDALE FAMILY OF LANCASHIRE NOTES

A History of the Dugdill and Dugdale Family Introduction These records have been compiled by Thomas Dugdill and Tim Dugdill [Timothy Michael Dugdill] during the period 1982-1989 [updated 2000] and are based on the research carried out by Robert Dugdill [Born 1883] of Rylstone Parish Register and further research by the writers of these notes based on the Registers for all parishes in Lancashire and Yorkshire Further information was gathered from gravestones in Rylstone and other Church cemeteries census records to 1881 and from various publications on the history of Clitheroe up to the end of the 17th century This particular history is based on the ancestors and descendants of Thomas and Annie Dugdill of Scale Hill Farm Rylstone who lived from 1875-1913 and 1873-1938 respectively After their marriage in 1898 they farmed at Rock House Farm Hetton from 1898-1900 The Rookery from 1900-1911 and Scale Hill Farm until their respective deaths These notes have been compiled by Thomas Dugdill youngest son of the above and his son Timothy Michael Dugdill Origins of the name DugdillDugdale According to the publication lsquoBaines Lancashirersquo the names DUGDILL - DUGDALL ndashDUGDALE are all lsquolocals of Dugdale some small dale on the borders of Lancashire and Yorkshirersquo Another publication lsquoHomes and Family Names of Great Britainrsquo published in 1890 states lsquoDugdale was the name of a Clitheroe family in the reign of Elizabeth I to whom belongs Sir William Dugdale the celebrated antiquary of the 17th century whose father settled in Warwickshirersquo It also states that lsquoDugdale is a small North Staffordshire hamletrsquo although on most maps there is no trace of the hamlet The earliest mention of the name at least found by the writer is of an Agnes DOGHDALE in Yorkshire circa 1379 There are many variations in spelling of the name such as DOUGHDALE DUGDALL DUGDAILE DUGDYLL DUGDELL and others It is interesting to note that the original most common spelling was DUGDALL at Clitheroe in the 17thcentury from which it is understandable how both DUGDILL and DUGDALE are derived Dugdales are still at Clitheroe and many other areas of the UK Dugdills are much less numerous and mostly originate from Rylstone Parish in Yorkshire however some branches of this line are now known as Dugdale During the 17thcentury there were DUGEDAYLLS living at Kirby Malham and one John Dugedayll married one Agnes Crayke in 1602 Cracoe takes itrsquos name from the Crayke family Through the 16thcentury various members of this family are recorded but the writers do not think they are connected Other Dugdales farmed at Hubberholme and Skythornes over the same period but they as did the Dugedaylls died out One other possible theory of the name origin has a Scottish connection although it is only a wild guess from Tim Dugdill on one of his visits to his cottage in Kinecardineshire There was a place in Dumfries and Galloway on the Scottish borders which was called Douglasdale but on some documents inspected was shortened to Dougrsquodale After the Battle of Bannockburn Scottish raiders deluged Yorkshire in fact much of Skipton was badly razed by them and it is just possible that one of the marauders stayed and used the name from whence he had come

This is merely speculation but what is certain is that the Dugdill family origins are at Clitheroe as the following research hopefully indicates The Dugdalls of Clitheroe 1500-1700 The earliest record of the name is in 1576 when a Jacobi Dugdall had a son baptised and in 1577 a John Dugdall had a son baptised also called Richard which would indicate that both Jacobi and John must have been born between 1540 -1550 The registers for Clitheroe are missing from 1626 to 1653 and the only information about this period is to be found in lsquoClitheroe on the Seventeenth Centuryrsquo by William Self Weeks FSA This book gives more information about Clitheroe and itrsquos inhabitants than those registers which are available Dugdall was by far the most common name indeed according to Weeks the name appears in the reords no less than 89 times between 1570 ndash1626 The population of Clitheroe at that time was only a few hundred The earliest lsquocall listrsquo according to Weeks was that for 1589These lists were compiled of men who elected bailiffes burgesses and members of Parliament as well as being a list of men to serve as jurors on the lsquo Court Leetrsquo which was held from time to time The 1589 lsquoLeetrsquo states that both Edmund and Richard Dugdall were burgesses and lists as inhabitants William [Senior and Junior] Walter Hugh Nicholas John and Edward The most complete lsquocall listrsquo is that for the Court Leet held on 30thOctober 1593 when a complete list of officials and inhabitants are shown Dugdalls included are - Out Burgesses [Lived outside Clitheroe] The heirs of Edmund and William In Burgesses [Lived in the town] Nicholas Inhabitants William Hugh Nicholas Henry [Junior] William [Senior] William [Junior] Walter John and Edward The Burgessersquos names are obviously repeated under Inhabitants From the mid 16thCentury to the end of the 17thCentury the DUGDALLS were always Bailiffes Burgesses Constables or Seargeants of the Borough of Cliderowe [Clitheroe] and it may be interesting to know the duties of such officials at the time - Bailiffe The head man of the Borough second only to the Lord of the Manor His duties consisted of collecting tithes and market dues marrying people if not married in the Church [similar to registry offices today] leading official ceremonies and parades particularly on market days swearing in other officials such as Burgesses and Seargeants and officiating at Court Leets Burgess He assisted the Bailiffe and attended the Court Leet sessions as the equivalent of a juror There were two types of Burgess the In-Burgess who must live within the town and the out-Burgess from the countryside surrounding the town Seargeants and Constables

These were appointed to keep law and order and arrest felons and wrongdoers They could be either male or female but should they be elected and refuse to serve they would be lsquobrought uprsquo at the Leet and fined All these officials were appointed for one year but could and often did serve for more than one term Presumably they received some form of payment or expenses It would appear from the requirements of these offices that those appointed would be able to read and write Throughout the 17th Century members of the Dugdall family were very active in the public affairs of Clitheroe because as well as the previously detailed officials they are also shown in records as those voting in Parliamentary elections For instance in the 1627 election Richard Senior Richard Junior John and Thomas had two votes and in the election of 1640 the last before the Civil War Richard Senior Richard Junior John Thomas Nicholas and William also had two votes It has not been possible to trace who supported whom in the Civil War as those records make no reference to allegiance but further research would be interesting to show whether the Dugdalls were for Cromwell or King Although taking part in public life and official positions they nevertheless also appear frequently in the Court Leet records of the times as the following extracts illustrate - 1st July 1600 William Dugdall [In-Bailiffe] was amersed [fined] two pence for lsquoLayinge his worthinge in the streetrsquo 26th July 1600 William Dugdall [In Bailiffe] was amersed six pence for the same offence [Slow learners arenrsquot we ndash TMD] 8th January 1645 John Dugdall [Elder] for lsquoNot dressing the street outside his housersquo amersed ten pence 29thApril 1647 For the same offence 23rd October 1645 John Dugdall [Corporal] for lsquoMakinge affray and drawinge blood upon ye boddie of Robte Greenmanrsquo Also at the same Court Leet the same John Dugdall was fined two shillings and sixpence for assaulting his son John 18th October 1649 Presentment of Thomas Dugdall [Burgess] for lsquoremoveninge a meare [boundary] stone out of the waye leadinge between Mearley and Cliderowe lying in a close called Gilscroftrsquo and the jury laid a stipulation that lsquoThomas Dugdall Burgess shall lay the Meare Stonne in its right place in Gilscroft betwixt this and the first of April nextrsquo 3rd May 1666 John Dugdall [Alderman] fined six shillings and eight pence for lsquoMakinge affray and drawing bloodrsquo 10th October 1608 John Dugdall [Shoemaker] fined for lsquoBreakinge of the lattes in the wyndo of the wife of William Malton and cominge into her home in the night timersquo [Out of character ndash TMD] 22nd October 1646 Ellen Hoult fined twelve pence for lsquoRaylinge and scowlinge on Jane Dugdall the Wyffe of William Dugdall

Perhaps there is a sequel to this where there is a record of lsquoJane Dugdall the wyeffe of William Dugdall for makinge an affray on the bodie of Ellen Houltrsquo 3rd May 1666 lsquoMargaret the wyeffe of Nicholas Dugdall taylor of this town is a common scold with her neybourers The said Margaret is an eavesdropper and sets debate and some dissention amongst her neybourersrsquo 21st May 1650 A possible case of witchcraft was tried the charge being that lsquoNicholas Dugdall and Jennot his wife versus Edmund Dugdall of Cliderowe and Margaret his wife Thou [The said Nicholas] and thy wyefe killed my childrsquo There are many more entries in the Court Leet records similar to those extracted There were so many Dugdalls living in Clitheroe during the 17th Century that it was impossible to establish what relationship each was to the other although undoubtedly they were the same family The name was usually spelt as DUGDALL but there are records during the same period when the name is spelt DUGDYLL DUGDYILL DUGDILL DUGDAILE and DUGDALE Probably the outstanding member of the family is John Dugdall described as lsquoGentlemanrsquo who was the bayliffe for a number of years in the 1650rsquos He died in 1679 and is described as lsquoBuried in Woolenrsquo From the earliest records which were in 1570 to the end of the 1600rsquos the name Nicholas along with John William and Thomas predominates Records show that in the 1650rsquos a number of children were fathered by Nicholas and again in the 1670rsquos a son of Nicholas also called Nicholas fathered children Some of these children were illegitimate others not and it is almost certain that this Nicholas was the father of William Witton alias William Dugdill who started the documented DUGDILL family in the Parish of Rylstone in 1700 Other DugdalesDugdills There is still a prominent Clitheroe family of DUGDALES living in the town today who must be direct descendants of the 17th Century Dugdalls as also must the many other Dugdales around Britain At the time these investigations were started [1982] there were only sixteen DUGDILLS listed in all the telephone directories for the UK one example of which was Robert [Bob] Dugdill and his family who live in the Bristol area Bob is a direct descendant of Robert Dugdill born at Rylstone in 1834 who was the brother of John Dugdill [The Grandfather of Thomas Dugdill the compiler of these notes] A Mike Dugdill was traced to Bolton who could trace his ancestry to James Albert Dugdill his Grandfather and Richard Dugdill his Great Grandfather Harold Hector Dugdill was also traced living in Sheffield who has two sons and a daughter Lucy The elder son also Harold Hector having one child and living in Sheffield and Maurice who has two children and lives in Gateshead It has not been possible to link these and other families with our own however it would appear fairly certain that they are all descendants of the Clitheroe DUGDALLS already discussed The documented story of the DUGDILL family starts overleaf with the arrival of one William Witton alias Dugdill who still remains something of a mystery If anyone reading this history can cast any light on the origin of William we would love to hear from you

WILLIAM WITTON alias WILLIAM DUGDILL There is no record in any Lancashire or Yorkshire Parish registers of where William Witton was born or who he was however to be married at Rylstone in 1700 as William Witton alias William Dugdill almost certainly means that he was the illegitimate son of a DUGDILL and all evidence points to the fact that it was NICHOLAS DUGDILL of Clitheroe who was his father At the time that William Witton would have been born probably in the 1670rsquos it was both lawful and customary for an illegitimate son to take his fathersrsquo name as an alias This is substantiated in lsquoThe Family Tree Detectiversquo by Colin Rogers who quotes ldquoEntries for illegitimate children in Parish registers before 1813 sometimes name only the mother but it is common for the reputed father to be given also and in the 17th Century an illegitimate child might carry an alias in his or her name into adulthood In more modern times illegitimate children have been the origin of some hyphenated surnames According to Weeks Clitheroe Nicholas Dugdall Junior was a weaver in 1666 and in 1670 he worked for ThosPinder a carrier of Clitheroe [probably pack-horses] and that he was in Skipton that yearWilliam Witton alias William Dugdill was a weaver in 1700 when he married at Rylstone As stated Nicholas Dugdall now spelt Dugdill is shown as being in Skipton in 1670 as the Parish register cites the following Christening - lsquoAnn daughter of one Nicholas DUGDILL servant to ThosPinder Clitheroe carrier Begotten in fornication upon ye body of Mary Tullen of Skipton an half-witted wench This is ye seconde bastardrsquo This entry was in March 1670 There are two interesting points here Firstly as Nicholas worked for a carrier he would probably regularly bring the pack horses to Skipton almost certainly staying overnight Secondly as the register is in his name not that of his mother we must presume that the first bastard must have been his also There were no Wittons living in Clitheroe during the 17th Century but they were at Bolton-by-Bowland and Skipton which would appear to be the same family as the following details indicate - In 1566 a William Witton son of Ambroasia Witton was Christened at Bolton-by-Bowland and in 1587 a William Witton son of William was Christened In the 1640rsquos an Ambrosia Witton was living in Skipton who would appear to be the songrandson of the above-named Wittons This Ambrosia Witton had five daughters Eliza born 1644 ndash Elizabeth born 1647 ndash Margaret born 1648 ndash Mary born 1653 and a Joane not registered but was named at Bolton-by-Bowland in 1677 These Witton daughters would be in their twenties in the 1670rsquos and were living in either Skipton or Bolton-by-Bowland not far from Clitheroe where Nicholas was living According to records only Joane married and circumstantial evidence points to one of the other Witton girls being the mother of William alias Dugdill for there were no other Wittons living at that time who could have been his mother William Witton obviously took his fathersrsquo name as an alias and indeed dropped the Witton altogether after his marriage Conjecture only but it was common for someone in Williamsrsquo position to choose the lsquobestrsquo name so it is possible that the standing of the Dugdills in the locality was more favourable than the Wittons The family have been known as DUGDILL in the Parish of Rylstone where he lived since 1700

The Dugdills of Rylstone during the 18th and 19th centuries The start of the DUGDILL family line in the Parish of Rylstone was when William Witton alias William Dugdill married Margaret Kitchen of Cracoe on 5thMay 1700 at Rylstone Parish Church From this point William dropped the name Witton and the family have lived as Dugdill since that date There has been a continuous line of Dugdill in the Parish of Rylstone since then until 1956 when my eldest brother John Dugdill left Scale Hill Farm and retired as neither of his daughters wished to farm William and Margaret [nee Kitchen] had four children three daughters and one son The eldest daughter Mary was born in 1700 but no details are known other than the fact that she married a Joseph Jackman in 1737 He is described as a cardwinder and at that time Mary was 37 years old and lived at Cracoe Fell The two other daughters Ann born in 1702 and Margaret born in 1705 both died unmarried within a week of each other in November 1724 They are both buried at Rylstone Church and I presume that both died of perhaps diphtheria or some other contagious disease to die so young According to the register in 1710 the family moved from Cracoe to Hetton the same year that the only boy was born Stephen William Dugdill died in 1750 and is buried at Rylstone Church He was described as a weaver and a farmer Provided our research is correct William lived to an extremely good age for those days being close to 80 years old when he died Stephen Dugdill 1710 - The only son of William he was born in Hetton in 1710 and although it is not known when he died it is known from the Parish register that he was alive when his wife died in 1786 He married Margaret Sergenson of Malham and they had three children Margaret was born in 1737 Elizabeth in 1740 and then William in 1748 at Hetton who is our direct line descendant The Sarganson [Variously spelt] family of Malham were large and extensive in the area their main residence being Hanlith Hall First mention of the family was in 1347 when lsquoCassandra widow of William Sergeant holds a toft in widowhood tenure and one bovate of land and half a rood of pasture for her life and pays 53d per year for itrsquo This and other details of the Sergeantsons are taken from a book lsquoSargeansonsrsquo in Skipton Library The various spellings of the name have been changed deliberately by the writer to illustrate how many different spellings of the name were encountered In 1569 a William Sargeanson of Hanlith was executed for taking part in lsquoThe Rising of the Northrsquo against Elizabeth 1 He was hanged at Hanlith by a William Lawson as was one man from each village in the area including Rylstone In 1570 the rest of the rebels were pardoned including Roger and John Sargeanson of Hanlith A survey of lands of the rebels in 1570 shows that lsquoThomas Sargeanson holds one tenement with two bovates of land at Hanlith all of which the said Thomas holds freely by charter of military service and pays annually at The Feast of Saint Martinrsquo There is also a record which shows that Thomas John Thomas jnr all sons of John bought their respective holdings from John Metcalfe There are also records of William Sargeanson of Hanlith [1665 ndash 1727] being a lsquoJustice of The Peacersquo and amongst others lsquoA Trustee of The Lambert Estates in 1689 ndash 1690rsquo Colonel Lambert being one of Cromwellrsquos most remembered Generals

The Sergeantson family are detailed not only because they were inter-married with the Dugdills but also my grandmotherrsquos family of Littons as will be shown later It may be interesting to note the definitions of the terms of measurement of land at that time known as lsquoCARUCATErsquo and lsquoBOVATErsquo quoting lsquoYorkshire Heritage by Harry J Scott - ldquoThe term carucate was once a unit of valuation based on the area which could be ploughed by a team of oxen in a year probably about 120 acres on easy arable land but only 100 acres of rough landrdquo ldquoA sub-division of the carucate was a bovate which was the area that one of the eight team of oxen could have ploughed and was sometimes called an ox-gangrdquo ldquoBesides being a unit of valuation it was a measure applied by a farmer to his landrdquo William Dugdill of Rilstone 1748 ndash 1825 Born at Hetton in 1748 the only son of Stephen he died at Rylstone in 1825 aged 77 years He married Elizabeth Throup of Winterburn who was born in 1748 and died in 1830 aged 82 years This is the same Throup family who were later to marry into the Litton family At the Christening of his children he is variously described as a weaver a butcher and a farmer so presumably he was all three at various times in his life He is shown in the Parish Register as living at Hetton Oxlinhouse and at Rylstone where he died They had four sons and two daughters - The eldest son was John 1774 ndash 1825 who lived at Malham and was married with one son William and four daughters It is this line of the family who lived as Dugdale the descendants of whom farmed at Skirbeck Long Preston and Cleatops Settle until the 1950rsquos Stephen was the second son born in 1782 of whom very little is recorded except that he lived at Malham with John He was married because his widow Mary [or possibly Margaret] was living at Flasby Moorside according to the 1851 census with two nephews William and John [My Grandfather] and was described as being lsquoA lodger pauper and formerly a butchers wifersquo The third son William was born 1775 and died 1824 aged 48 years There is no trace of him ever being married and there is no wife buried in the graves at Rylstone Church Nothing has been traced of the two daughters Margaret born 1777 and Nancy born 1788 The youngest son Matthew was born in 1784 and is our direct line of descent His life is therefore dealt with in some detail in the next section William [1748 ndash 1825] and his son William [1775 ndash 1824] along with Elizabeth wife of William snr and Matthew and his wife Mary are in one grave at Rylstone Church Of the two Williams [father and son] the following epitaph is engraved on the lsquotable-toprsquo memorial stone in Rylstone cemetery ldquo Afflictions sore long time they bore Physicians were in vain Till God above out of his love Did ease them of their painrdquo It may be interesting to know that a seating plan dated 1798 has been on display in Rylstone church for some time William snr is shown as having three places and William jnr as having two places Sharing the pew with the former was a William Sergeanson who would be the uncle of William snr

Matthew Dugdill of Rilston 1784 ndash 1863 Born in November 1784 the youngest son of William he married Mary Carr from Austwick near Clapham at Gargrave Church on 27thJune 1816 at the age of 32 Between 1817 and 1834 they has six sons and four daughters All children survived infancy the first to die being Stephen at the age of 23 [unmarried] followed by Mary also unmarried at the age of 34 The last to die was William in 1913 aged 88 who as a young man farmed at Flasby Moorside with his young brother John [My Grandfather] and his sister Ann as housekeeper along with an Auntie Margaret who was the widow of Stephen and described as a pauper William then farmed at Wedacre Gisburn with his first wife who died in 1874 and is buried as Dugdale at Rylstone They had two daughters one of whom Minnie married a cousin of my mother Robert Peel His second wife is buried at Long Preston as Dugdill William is buried at Rylstone but the inscription is on the gravestone at Long Preston There are no living descendants of William English (Lancashire) habitational name from a place called Dugdale probably the hamlet near Uttoxeter Staffordshire now known as Dagdale from the Old English personal name or byname Ducca + Old English daeligl or Old Norse dalr lsquovalleyrsquo Dugdale Domesday Book Entry The Dugdale family can be traced back to the Norman conquest and are listed in the Domesday Book AD 1085 The Dugdale entry is listed under the demense (manor) of Robert Pictaveris (then Earl of Lancaster) who stationed one of his Barons Ilbert De Lacy among the kills of Clitheroe to preserve law and order SURTEES SOCIETY V (Richmond Wills) Thomas Horton Vicar of Garstang 1467-68 Witnessed the last will of Richard Dugdale who left his animals to pay for the repair of Garstang Bridge Dugdale James Vicar of St Helens Church Garstang 1535-1545 (Valor Eccl V 263) The vicars were generally canons of Cockersand Abbey Dugdale James (c 1557-60) - Archdeacon of St Albans St Pauls London 1557-1560 III i 14

Mary Dugdale (1597 - 1648) married in 161415 to Richard Sewall (died in 1637) of Nuneaton Warwickshire They had children Margaret Mary Anne Elizabeth Prudence Sarah Richard Henry and Samuel Henry emigrated to Maryland in 1661 where he married Jane Lowe Henry was the Secretary of the Province of Maryland

Mary Dugdale was the only daughter of John Dugdale of Shustock co Warwick by Elizabeth Swynfen his wife daughter of Arthur Swynfen of Dunchurch co Warwick (descended from the ancient family of Swynfen of Swynfen co Stafford

He married Mary Dugdale Corley Warwickshire ENG 1614 The date of the marriage is inferred by the Heralds Visitation of 1619 which lists the age of their oldest child as four years

Mary was born 1597(229) Mary(230) was the daughter of John Dugdale and Elizabeth Swynfen Mary died before 30 MAR 1648 at approximately 50 years of age(231) The death date is taken from Canterbury court records when the adminstrator of her husbands estate was changed to Elizabeth SEARE

13 ii Mary Sewall was born 1616 She is named in the Warwickshire Visitation of 1619 as then three years old She married Richard Dudley Danvers MA before 11 AUG 1642 She is named in her brother Richards will as Mary Dudley This indicates that she was married before the date of the will 11 Aug 1642 (See Richard Dudley for the continuation of this line)

History of Whalley Abbey Although Whalley is a place where Christian worship has been offered for well over a thousand years - as the Paulinus legend and the Celtic crosses in the churchyard testify - the monks came at a comparatively late date The Cistercian monastery at Stanlow in Cheshire was founded in AD1170 In 1193 Roger Baron Halton the son of the founder of the Abbey inherited the land titles and dignities of his kinsman Robert deLacy DeLacy was one of the powerful families that had come with William the Conqueror and had been given large tracts of land in East Lancashire and West Yorkshire It was through this connection that the monks of Stanlow acquired properties in Lancashire Repeated flooding of the Abbey and other natural afflictions made the monks of Stanlow want to move and a suitable site was found at Whalley It took some years however for the removal to be effected and it was not until April 1296 that the Abbot and about 20 monks arrived in Whalley Initially they moved into the old rectory pending the building of the great church but due to various difficulties it was not until 1340 that serious work began The Abbey Church was completed in 1388 but there was still much building work to be done The last Abbot of Whalley John Paslew was involved in the rebellion (formed as the Pilgrimage of Grace) against the ecclesiastical policy of King Henry VIII For this he and some of his monks were tried on a charge of treason and Paslew was found guilty and executed in 1537 The Abbey was then treated as though it was Paslews personal estate and was sequestered by the Crown The lead was removed from the roof of the Abbey and the property was left largely as it was Eight years later the Abbey was sold to Richard Assheton and Thomas Bradyll in 1545 Assheton subsequently bought Bradyll out and moved into the old Abbots lodgings In 1588 this was adapted and extended in accordance with the architectural fashions of the period A further extension was later made in 1694 In the late 18th century the Asshetons had two daughters but no sons The elder of the two daughters who was the heiress married Sir Nathaniel Curzon of Keddleston and went to live in Derbyshire She lost interest in the Whalley property which then fell into a state of serious disrepair In 1836 her grandson Earl Howe sold it to a calico painter in Whalley called John Taylor and in the course of time it passed by will to kinsman John Hargreaves A scheme of restoration was introduced and the house now bears much evidence of the Gothic revival of the mid 19th century In 1900 the property was sold to Sir John Clegg of Blackburn The house and grounds were again on sale in 1923 when they were bought by the Diocese of Manchester after an appeal launched by their bishop William Temple It was intended that it would be the Diocesan Conference and Retreat House but three years later the diocese was split and the new Diocese of Blackburn bought it from Manchester Since then much work has been done to equip the Abbey as a centre for residential conferences retreats and courses as well as providing accommodation for other meetings of boards and councils training days and social occasions It is a spiritual power house for the Diocese of Blackburn and a place for all kinds of industrial educational and cultural activities The ruins are open to the public and there is a visitor centre shop coffee shop picnic area and nature trail Visitors appreciate the extensive ruins of the old monastery and enjoy the beauty and splendour of the well-kept grounds The Long Walk is generally accepted as one of the beauty spots in Lancashire and the site comprises about the finest monument to our local Lancashire heritage in existence Comments to Steve Lassey slasseyemceecom

For many years the Osbaldeston and Oxendale Estates together with various farms and land totalling approximately 935 acres were all in the possession of the Dugdale family On the death of Joseph Dugdale this large estate was eventually sold by auction into separate lots by Messrs HMHodson amp Co (Auctioneers) of 14 Clifton Street Blackpool The auction took place at the Old Bull Hotel Blackburn at 230pm Wednesday 10th March 1926

LANCASHIRE had the honour to be the birth-place and home of the immediate ancestors of Sir William Dugdale who in the introduction to his History of Warwickshire has recorded the fact but the learned herald was not descended from one of our great families of whom it may be said with truth that they lose them-selves in the ages which are past but who are still remembered by deeds that will not die John Dugdale of Chatburn near Clitheroe was frequently a juryman of the court of the abbot and convent of Whalley held for the exempt jurisdiction of the royal forests of Bowland Pendle Rossendale and Blackburn-shire2 and occupied lands belonging to the abbey between the years 1515 and 1534 He was probably the father of John Dugdale jun of Chatburn who was living in the year 1538 and a relative of James Dugdale who is named in a Compotus of Whalley abbey a payment being made Jacobo Dugdale usque Lychfield pro R Towneley xvi who appears to have gone to the ecclesiastical court on business3 Mr Hamper thinks that this man might have been the grandfather of Sir William Dugdale4 but he overlooked the important fact that James Dugdale was a monk of the abbey and that his name did not occur in the later Compotus of 1521 but in the earlier one of 1478 which would not agree with Mr Hampers computation of dates5 The name often occurs in connection with the abbey which possessed lands and considerable messuage property in Clitheroe and the surrounding hamlets at the dissolution of the house In the year 1538 a minute survey of its possessions was made by the crown(6)and amongst the abbey tenants at will in that year are not fewer than six persons of the name of Dugdale all being of the peasant or agricultural class John Dugdale sen and John Dugdale jun were small holders as well as Nicholas and Henry Dugdale Mr William Dugdale senr and Mr William Dugdale junr (7) were connected with the abbey in some way not stated but from their mode of description were probably in a somewhat less humble position Whilst Christopher and John Dugdale of Chatburn were ordinary tenants James Dugdale of Clitheroe the grandfather of sir William is styled by Anthony a Wood a gentleman (8) and the grandson with pardonable vanity has described him as descended ex antiqua ejusdem cognom familia He is also said to have borne coat armour but by what right is not named It was however so similar to the heraldic bearing of a family of the name of Uvedale that Wood with marvellous puerility conjectured that Dugdale was a corruption of De Uvedale and he also states that sir William Dugdale seemed to be of the same opinion although he paid little regard to his own family and knew nothing of his ancestors(9) which may be fairly assumed to be a strong proof of their obscurity He was however wishful to be thought a member of an ancient house of which unfortunately there are no records

There were at the commencement of the sixteenth century two contemporaneous families within the ancient parish of Whalley bearing the respective surnames of Uvedale (10) and Dugdale and as they are said to have

borne the same arms with a difference although they did not appear at any of the Lancashire Heraldic Visitations the probability seems to be that if they were entitled to such a distinction the Dugdales had acquired the arms of their neighbours by marriage and adopted them as their own Still the proof is wanting and it must have been patent to a shrewd man like Wood that the fact laid on the surface The Dugdales Uvedales and another Clitheroe family named Bleasdale were all apparently of the class of husbandmen and hardly reached the rank of yeomen James the grandfather of sir William with whom the pedigree commences lived at Clitheroe and married helliphelliphellipdaughter of Thomas Woodcock of that place and had issue an only son John who was born in the year 1552 and doubtless educated at the royal grammar school of Clitheroe then recently founded by queen Mary as it is recorded that he was adorned with such erudition as his native place could afford12 His connection with the university of Oxford is not very accurately stated by his son and differs from the account given by Anthony a Wood Sir William has recorded that his father had been a private tutor in lord Giles Paulets family had received his chief education in St Johns college Oxford where he studied civil law and that he took the degree of master of arts (13) and remained at Oxford as tutor to William Paulet a grandson of the marquess of Winchester Anthony a Wood with his usual minuteness and scrupulous exactness has recorded perhaps not without a touch of vindictiveness for he had at the moment a grudge against Sir William that John Dugdale a very sober and prudent person accompanied several of his pupils to Oxford immediately after Christmas 1582 (14) and that on the 9th of February 1582-83 his young scholar Paulet was matriculated of St Johns college He had now according to Wood no official connection with any of his former pupils but having a kinsman William Dugdale clerk or servant to sir William Cordell master of the rolls and also at that time bursar and steward of St Johns College the young schoolmaster for such he had probably been whilst in the country was induced himself being then in his thirtieth year to matriculate of St Johns college Wood says that here he studied civil law wore the gown of a civilian but left the university after fourteen years residence without any degree either in law or artsHe had however succeeded his kinsman of whom nothing more is known both as bursar and steward of the college On leaving Oxford he sold what he had in Lancashire (15) and closed his connection with the county He purchased a lease of Mr Paulet of the impropriate rectory of Shustoke in Warwickshire and settled there About the year 1596 he married Elizabeth daughter of Arthur Swynfyn esq of Dunchurch by whom he had issue a daughter Mary and one son William the future historian of his native county John Dugdale died on the 24th July 1624 aged 72 having been described by his son two years before as being aged very infirm and suffering from a dead palsy in his limbs His wife died before him William Dugdale born at Shustoke on the 12th Septem-ber 1605 was educated at the grammar school of Coventry which he left when about fifteen years of age and afterwards studied civil law and history under his fathers immediate direction The law of primogeniture and entail and of succession to territorial wealth and dignities or the great old hereditary laws of England which had kept society together and made the country what it is had been the first subjects mastered by the stripling and they seem to have given a bias to his views and also to his future studies and investigations He married on the 17th March 1622-23 when only in his eighteenth year at the special request of his father Margery second daughter of John Huntbach of Seawell in the county of Staffordshire

months pay charged on that township assessed by the deputy lieutenant throughout the hundred of Blackburn to be paid to sir

From the mid 16thCentury to the end of the 17thCentury the DUGDALLS were always Bailiffes Burgesses Constables or Seargeants of the Borough of Cliderowe [Clitheroe] and it may be interesting to know the duties of such officials at the time -

The head man of the Borough second only to the Lord of the Manor His duties consisted of collecting tithes and market dues marrying people if not married in the Church [similar to registry offices today] leading official ceremonies and parades particularly on market days swearing in other officials such as Burgesses and Seargeants and officiating at Court Leets

WILLIAM WITTON alias WILLIAM DUGDILL

There is no record in any Lancashire or Yorkshire Parish registers of where William Witton was born or who he was however to be married at Rylstone in 1700 as William Witton alias William Dugdill almost certainly means that he was the illegitimate son of a DUGDILL and all evidence points to the fact that it was NICHOLAS DUGDILL of Clitheroe who was his father

This is merely speculation but what is certain is that the Dugdill family origins are at Clitheroe as the following research hopefully indicates The Dugdalls of Clitheroe 1500-1700 The earliest record of the name is in 1576 when a Jacobi Dugdall had a son baptised and in 1577 a John Dugdall had a son baptised also called Richard which would indicate that both Jacobi and John must have been born between 1540 -1550 The registers for Clitheroe are missing from 1626 to 1653 and the only information about this period is to be found in lsquoClitheroe on the Seventeenth Centuryrsquo by William Self Weeks FSA This book gives more information about Clitheroe and itrsquos inhabitants than those registers which are available Dugdall was by far the most common name indeed according to Weeks the name appears in the reords no less than 89 times between 1570 ndash1626 The population of Clitheroe at that time was only a few hundred The earliest lsquocall listrsquo according to Weeks was that for 1589These lists were compiled of men who elected bailiffes burgesses and members of Parliament as well as being a list of men to serve as jurors on the lsquo Court Leetrsquo which was held from time to time The 1589 lsquoLeetrsquo states that both Edmund and Richard Dugdall were burgesses and lists as inhabitants William [Senior and Junior] Walter Hugh Nicholas John and Edward The most complete lsquocall listrsquo is that for the Court Leet held on 30thOctober 1593 when a complete list of officials and inhabitants are shown Dugdalls included are - Out Burgesses [Lived outside Clitheroe] The heirs of Edmund and William In Burgesses [Lived in the town] Nicholas Inhabitants William Hugh Nicholas Henry [Junior] William [Senior] William [Junior] Walter John and Edward The Burgessersquos names are obviously repeated under Inhabitants From the mid 16thCentury to the end of the 17thCentury the DUGDALLS were always Bailiffes Burgesses Constables or Seargeants of the Borough of Cliderowe [Clitheroe] and it may be interesting to know the duties of such officials at the time - Bailiffe The head man of the Borough second only to the Lord of the Manor His duties consisted of collecting tithes and market dues marrying people if not married in the Church [similar to registry offices today] leading official ceremonies and parades particularly on market days swearing in other officials such as Burgesses and Seargeants and officiating at Court Leets Burgess He assisted the Bailiffe and attended the Court Leet sessions as the equivalent of a juror There were two types of Burgess the In-Burgess who must live within the town and the out-Burgess from the countryside surrounding the town Seargeants and Constables
