Some families have enquired as to whether this means that their child would need to move schools. There is absolutely no need for existing families to move schools. As it stands, Mount Waverley Primary School is currently well under the proposed 50% cap on enrolments from outside our area as we currently only have 25% of our student population from outside of our catchment area and of that 25% the majority live in the suburb of Mount Waverley with our school being easily accessible for these families. In many cases these families have attended the same pre-schools as families who reside within our catchment. What this change of direction means is unclear for now, as to this point, I have only read media articles and have had no directives from the Department or our Regional Director. Mount Waverley Primary School provides a diverse range of additional programs which are taught to an exceptional standard in addition to the outstanding results we achieve in Numeracy and Literacy. We have a commitment to Child Safe Standards to the highest possible level no matter what the future holds we will continue to welcome interested families and build upon this already great school. E-SAFETY NEWS

As our world becomes more technology based, we are spending increasing amounts of time on social media. Many of our older students already have social media accounts which they use to communicate with friends and family. Proper use of these accounts can allow friendships to remain when children move school, house, state or country; however, it is recommended that a responsible adult monitor social media accounts. Below is a link to the recommended age guidelines for use of different social media accounts: https://www.esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent/staying-safe/social-networking/is-there-an-age-limit-for-kids-on-social-media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

WWF (World Wildlife Fund) invited Australians to walk, bounce or hop back into the wildlife spirit this June, with the much-anticipated return of Wild Onesie Week 2018. WWF challenged Australians to head off to work and school and go about their day dressed head-to-toe as an

animal during WILD ONESIE WEEK (which included World Environment Day on June 5). MWPS Senior Environment Team challenged our school to participate in this event by holding a WILD ONESIE DAY on TUESDAY 5th JUNE. Students dressed in wild onesies, or dressed like an animal

on the day. A GOLD COIN donation was requested and we raised $705.50. The funds raised will go towards our sponsored animals (which include koalas, a bilby, an orang-utan, a Tasmanian

devil and a now critically endangered Leadbeater’s possum to name a few.) See our sponsored animals page on the Sustainability Blog http://sustainabilityatmwps.global2.vic.edu.au/our-

animals/ for more details of our animals.

LIBRARY NEWS

Busy, busy, busy. Lots of stuff going on in the library. We’ve had exciting author visits from Jacqueline Harvey and Felice Arena, and their books are flying out of the library and are reserved until the end of time it seems! This impact on children’s reading is only one of the great outcomes of author visits – meeting the living breathing author of an exciting book is an inspiring experience, opening children’s minds to the idea that real people write and to the strategies they use to do it. Year 6 are looking forward to a flying visit from Tristan Bancks on the very last day of term – we are lucky he managed to fit us in. He is on his way to the airport when we wave him off! Then came the Scholastic Book Fair, and what a fantastic event! Lots of lovely parents help out at the fair, (I’ll be in touch very soon). Funds raised will go towards new lilypad cushions for the children to use and to begin the expensive process of getting new shelving for the non-fiction books which will enable us to ‘front-face’ the books. This gives the children easier access to factual books and enticing them in with exciting covers. Finally parents, you may wonder from time-to-time why I keep annoying you with reminders on Compass about your child’s library class next day. (Thank you to the families who do read those reminders and help their children get organised). There are really good reasons we care so much about their borrowing. There is a proven link between reading for pleasure outside school, and academic achievement. (Cullinan, B.E. (2000) Independent reading and School Achievement. N.Y. AAL 1And from a 2012 report, ‘Reading to Young Children’, (http://www.education.vic.gov.au/documents/about/research/readtoyoungchild.pdf we find, “The frequency of reading to children at young age has a direct causal effect on their schooling outcomes, regardless of family background and home environment”. “Reading to Young Children: A Head-Start in Life The research sets out to explore the connections between parents reading to their young children and their child’s later reading and other cognitive skills. This research is a result of a partnership arrangement between the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research. Key Findings: The frequency of reading to children at a young age has a direct causal effect on their schooling outcomes regardless of their family background and home environment. Reading to children at age 4-5 every day has a significant positive effect on their reading skills and cognitive skills (i.e., language and literacy, numeracy and cognition) later in life. Reading to children 3-5 days per week (compared to 2 or less) has the same effect on the child’s reading skills at age 4-5 as being six months older. Reading to them 6-7 days per week has the same effect as being almost 12 months older. Children read to more frequently at age 4-5 achieve higher scores on the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for both Reading and Numeracy in Year 3 (age 8 to 9). These differences in reading and cognitive skills are not related to the child’s family background or home environment but are the direct result of how frequently they have been read to prior to starting school.” Food for thought…
