Anchor material

Conclusion

Being aware of the significant influence offreight rate for the building material on thetotal cost, the box piles were fabricatedon site so that all sheet piling could bedelivered stacked with a minimum ofrequired space. The assembly of theCAZ 50 box piles was eased by deliveringAZ 50 piles with already cut flanges.

A characteristic of the soil conditions in theDubai area is the cap rock. At this location, cap rock is found at a depth of about-19.00 m thus leading to hard drivingconditions. The installation was carried outwith vibratory hammers (ICE 815C andICE 1412) as well as a hydraulic impacthammer (IHC S90) without any furtherdriving assistance. A two level template wasused to guide the sheet piling during drivingwith free hanging driving equipment. The tolerances for the positioning of thebox piles were very strict, as these pilesrepresent the connection point betweenthe mechanical part of the ship lift, theretaining wall and the transfer rail.

Due to the high vertical loads during theoperation of the ship lift, the box pileshave to provide a high bearing capacity. The analysis of the driving records fromthe installation did allow a first estimationof the bearing capacity. These values spanfrom 3.2MN to 6.5MN.

To prove the bearing capacity of theCAZ 50 box piles, statical vertical loadtest was carried out which confirmed the

calculated values and finally did verifythe values estimated during the designcalculations.

As an integrated part of the design of thestructure the specific anchoring layout wasdeveloped as a tailor made pre-fabricatedsystem of tie rods and waling which wasprovided by Anker Schroeder, Germany. All required materials such as tie rods, waling, bolts, nuts and plates were deliveredto the site and simply had to be assembledwith a minimum of work to be carriedout on the field. Even the connections ofthe waling beams were already preparedwith drilled holes. Bearing in mind that thesite is located on a reclaimed area righton the shoreline and the anchor level ofthe sheet piling is lower than the high tidelevel, the waling and the tie rods could onlybe installed at low tide under dewateringconditions. Therefore the choice ofprefabricated anchor material was the onlyway to carry out these works in acost–effective way.

The installation of the sheet piling forthe ship lifts in Dubai Maritime City wascompleted within the time frame as initiallyplanned. The excellent preparation ofthis project from the design phase to theexecution of the structure took advantageof a high degree of prefabrication and leadto a successful completion.
