Both days were filled with impressive open tours of the completely renovated Shelter. Over the weekend, everyone enjoyed renewing old friendships and recounting fond memories. During the brunch on Saturday, Vandal football coach Robb Akey dropped by the Shelter to extend his congratulations and briefed everyone with a positive outlook for the upcoming season. That evening, the banquet was celebrated with a delicious dinner, a host of testimonials, and was highlighted by the keynote speaker, Travis Rockey, University of Florida ’73, vice president and ritualist of Delta Tau Delta Arch Chapter. Special guests included UI President Tim White and UI Vice Provost for Student Affairs Dr. Bruce Pitman. Special thanks were extended to the Capital Campaign Committee, Construction Committee, Beta Chi House Corporation, campaign coordinator Jerry Cooper, Illinois State ’98, construction manager John Hultman, and architect Scott Straubhar ’82. At the end of the banquet, the undergraduates presented the 2007 Alumni of the Year Awards to Marshall Mah ’70 and Ben Berriochoa ’82. In addition, a new award was given in honor of Bunn Snow ’36 to an alumnus who has dedicated himself to the betterment of Delta Mu. The inaugural Bunn Snow Award was presented to Mark Mecham ’86. An exciting campaign gift opportunity was also announced over the weekend. Four committed alumni (Ted Frostenson ’56, Don Nevile-Smith ’58, Fred Ayarza ’59, and Gary Michael ’62) have challenged our alumni to reach our campaign goal by matching up to $100,000 for each additional dollar raised. We must have the help of every alumnus to take advantage of this extraordinary matching challenge. We all have other commitments and obligations to our family, church, and community, but isn’t that part of what Delta Tau Delta taught us? Consider your own Delt experience—the lifelong friendships, the leadership and social skills you gained, and the values upon which we were founded. We need to continue making these opportunities available for our young pledges and members. This construction effort shows that the light still burns in many Delta Mu brothers. Our investment in this endeavor will ensure that future generations of Delta Mus have the opportunity to develop and refine their leadership and communication skills, not to mention the life skills gained through communal living and the management of a chapter and our Shelter. Consider how your experience at 720 Idaho Avenue prepared you for life beyond the University of Idaho. We now have the opportunity to provide for future brothers in the same way that those who went before us generously provided for our unique Delta Tau Delta experience. Remember that utilizing the five-year pledge period will make your gift a little easier. Simply sign and mail the enclosed pledge form so Delta Mu may gain the maximum benefit from this excellent opportunity. Overall, the 75th Anniversary was a great opportunity to visit the “new” Shelter and visit with our lifelong brothers! I want to personally thank all of you who have given your time and treasure in this effort and I greatly enjoyed seeing all of you who attended the dedication and anniversary celebration. Randy Haddock ’74 has stepped up and pledged his support to theimportant cause of renovating the Delta Mu Shelter. As a member ofthe Beta Chi House Corporation, Randy had frequent firsthand visits tosee the aging Shelter. “I knew we had to move forward with acampaign. I honestly believed the future of the chapter was at stake ifwe didn’t address the needs.” Randy, like all the other supporters, understands that the longevity of Delta Mu is vital to having an up-to-date facility that will attract quality members.

Joining Delta Mu was an easy choice for Randy in 1968. Hailing fromKellogg, Idaho, he was familiar with many students matriculating to UIand joining Delta Tau Delta. In fact, Brothers Bob Bush ’70, Frank ’70and John Shelt ’68, and Dennis Poffenroth ’66 were all fromKellogg. Randy still went through formal recruitment, but he knew rightaway ∆Τ∆ was the right choice. “I was attracted to how well-roundedthe guys were—athletically, academically, and socially.”

Randy sums up his active membership experience as time thatprovided him with life experiences and stability for the college years. He states, “Being in a fraternity added another dimension to collegelife that made it that much better.” Many of Randy’s favorite memoriesrevolve around playing intramural sports, as well as the RussianBalls—specifically the time he was tossed up in the air from a blanket, but not caught on the way down!

Having earned both a B.S. in business and a J.D. in law from Idaho,Randy now heads his own independent insurance agency, Haddock &Associates, in Coeur d’Alene. The company also has four branchoffices in Kellogg, Sandpoint, Hayden Lake, and Spokane.

When asked what his thoughts are on the importance of leadership,Randy believes it is critical to success, and being in a fraternity can bea building block to provide skills for that ability. “Leadership comes inseveral forms, but if you want to be a successful leader, you shouldfollow your personality to be effective; don’t try to be somebody else.”As a leader, Randy tries to create a vision and remain steadfast in it sothat he can create trust with his co-workers.

For young alumni early in their careers, Randy advises them to bepatient. “It takes time to build a meaningful career. It doesn’t work outright away, so go slowly and move forward with a vision.” And to theundergraduates, he says, “Enjoy the entire college experience as itdoesn’t come back.”

Randy and his wife, Kim, reside in Hayden, Idaho. You can contact himat [email protected].

Delts Move in to Newly Renovated Shelter with aProductive and Successful Membership

Welcome New Initiates!

Chapter Welcomes 19 New MembersMembers Exceed All-Men’s G.P.A. Both Semesters for 2006Brothers Compete in Every Intramural Sport

This marks the beginning of the first semester back in the Shelterafter our supportive alumni, along with active members, were able

to pledge more than $1.5 million to renovate and restore our home. Our men remain actively involved on campus, in the chapter, and inthe class room. We continue to be competitive in the fraternity world, from recruiting the fourth largest pledge class on campus to being aleader in intramural sports. The men of the Delta Mu Chapter are trulyliving our greatest value, committed to lives of excellence.

With the Shelter stripped to the studs and the hill partially tarnisheddue to construction traffic, we knew we were up against an immensechallenge of recruiting men to join the chapter last fall. “We realizedhow difficult this recruitment was going to be, and I think thatchallenge really motivated guys to work even harder,” statesRecruitment Chairman Sean Supp ’09. We were able to attain 19outstanding young men, securing Delta Tau Delta the fourth largestpledge class among 19 other fraternities on campus.

Our academic achievements have steadily improved. Last spring, theall-men’s average was 2.92, while Delta Mu’s was 3.07, ranking usfourth among the other fraternities. In the fall the all-men’s averagewas 2.79, while our chapter’s average was 2.83. Spring semestertypically shows higher averages than fall. Academics Chairman CoryPreston ’09 states, “We are in a steep climb to the top of the academicladder.”

This year’s Western Pacific Division conference was held in SanDiego, California, February 22-25 with five members of Delta Mu inattendance. It was a great pleasure to meet other Delts from around the

country and gain knowledge of how to better our chapter in all areas.“We really got an understanding of our vision of where we want ourchapter to be in the future and ways in which we can accomplish ourgoals to get us there,” reports Greg South ’08, sergeant of arms.

Delts display their competitive sprit by being involved in all availableintramural sports. From basketball to billiards our men have shown avariety of talents in numerous fields. Intramural Chairman BenLavigne ’09 explains, “We are raising the bar at every event for ourguys to compete at the top of their game.” Several members areactively involved in club sports as well, such as lacrosse and soccer.Dan Valasek ’08 was recently awarded Vandal Athlete of the Weekwith five goals leading the U of I lacrosse team to victory overWashington State University.

I would like to thank our supportive alumni who have been extremelygenerous in their donations to the Shelter renovation. This is by far thenicest facility in the Greek system at Idaho. The men of Delta Mu arededicated to maintaining the nicest fraternity house and to be the bestchapter in all areas of Greek life. Our members are ready and willingto do whatever it takes for Delta Mu and its members to reach successin all areas of life. We look forward to seeing many of you soon.

Brother Supports Capital Campaign So OthersMay Benefit from Delta Mu Membership

Looking back on the first time he visited the DeltaMu Shelter during pledge week, Ted

Frostenson ’56 recalls, “I met some really top-notch guys there that week, and they wereinfluential in my joining thefraternity; it was one of thebest decisions I’ve evermade!”

Some of Ted’s favoritememories from UI include“playing on the Idaho footballteam in 1954 as a senior whenwe beat Washington StateUniversity 10-0 for our firstwin over them in 29 years; thehonor of being electedpresident of the Delta MuChapter, the U of I’s Blue KeyService Honorary, the AthleticLetterman’s Club, and of beinginducted into the Sigma TauEngineering Society; and alsowhen I received a commissionfrom the Army ROTC programafter graduation.” Hegraduated UI with a B.S.(M.E.) in engineering.

Following graduation, Tedworked 40 years for Kaiser Aluminum andChemical Corporation in the U.S. and Africa. Hestarted off as a supervisor in a plant in Washington, then as a manager of plants in Illinois, WestVirginia, and California, and finally as a vicepresident and CEO of a company smeltingaluminum in Ghana, West Africa. Ted retired in1996.

When asked to describe himself as a leader, Tedsays he led by example, always trying to bedecisive, firm, fair and friendly, with lots ofcommunication, follow-up, and, when necessary, confrontation. He made every effort to understandthe various personalities of each individual heworked with in order to help motivate them for theirbest results.

From Ted’s long career, some important skills he’slearned from his assignments abroad includeperseverance and patience, keeping focused on thejob at hand, being honest and direct, and how toremain calm, even under the duress of nearly beingtaken hostage, riots, malicious damage, corruptionand threats to his life.

For younger alumni early in their careers, Tedadvises a number of smart practices, including “do
