A truly moving experience. Many veterans were in attendance at the sold-out preview of The Vietnam War and discussion with Ken Burns at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on September 9.
First-hand accounts from the visionaries behind Cortex. The discussion following the premiere screening of The Story of Cortex on August 9 included, from left, moderator and producer Patrick Murphy, William Danforth, Donn Rubin, Dennis Lower, and John McDonnell.
An exclusive stop in St. Louis. Jack Galmiche welcomes Ken Burns back to the Nine Network to preview and discuss his new series, The Vietnam War.
It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Royce Martin on keyboards and vocalist Christina Jones perform a special rendition of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood theme song at the Pioneer Spirit Gala.
Bushels of flavor. The August Taste & See with the Nine Network and Feast TV focused on the urban farm-to-fork movement with a veggie-centric offering and local beverages.

Dear Friends,
Thanks to the overwhelming support of our community, our first-ever gala on September 9 was a resounding success! Guests were taken on a journey through our 63-year history, beginning with our early days in educational television and ending with a vision for a vibrant future. The evening also celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Public Broadcasting Act, which established the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and welcomed Ken Burns to discuss his powerful documentary series, The Vietnam War.
Our Pioneer Spirit Gala was a time to celebrate and to recognize those who have chosen to support the Nine Network. This year, we recognized the Steward family, David II, Mary, David and Thelma Steward, with our Pioneer Spirit Award. The Steward family epitomizes our founders’ qualities and has elevated our community with their leadership, vision, innovation and philanthropy.
The Pioneer Spirit Gala was also a time to celebrate the Nine Network and the success of our Igniting the Spirit of Possibility campaign. We recognized the Monsanto Company with our Visionary Leadership Circle Torchbearer Award, and the Mildred, Herbert and Julian Simon Foundation, and Mary Strauss with the Leadership Circle Award. And, the inaugural Digital Pioneer Award was presented to Jim and Cathy Berges and the Berges Family Foundation for helping us meet the challenges of a rapidly changing media world.
I grew up in St. Louis and my mother made certain that Channel 9 was my after school educator. My mom loved Channel 9. She was passionate about my education and the education of my three brothers; for her, Channel 9 was a safe and trusted place for
learning and inspiration. What my mom wanted for me is what we want for all kids in our community.
Much has changed since those early days of Channel 9, but our commitment to education has not. Today, nearly 80 percent of all kids 2–8 years of age watch educational kids programming on Nine. You entrust your children to us, and we take that responsibility seriously. Every day, around the clock, we reach kids in our region on air, online and in the community with programs that educate and inspire.
Our future is bright, too. We provide perspective, context and hope for a future that celebrates the journey as neighbors in a respectful and inspiring way. We are the future of a medium that informs, educates and entertains. We will challenge the status quo and inspire what might be possible.
Our community is better because of the Nine Network: better informed, better educated, and kids are better prepared for school. Because of your support, we can dare to envision a strong and healthy community working together through public media.
Thank you for your exceptional commitment to supporting our community. Happy holidays and best wishes for a happy and healthy 2018!
Yours truly,
Open to the Public: The public is invited to meetings of the Nine Network board of directors. For infor-mation about Nine’s public meetings, call Cathy Peterson at (314) 512-9017.

Space and science has always captivated and inspired us to learn more and go farther. Smart, fascinating content is the hallmark of public television, going back to PBS’ early days when National Geographic specials reached vast audiences.
PBS launched prime-time “Think Wednesdays” as the destination for the best science and nature programs, offering new perspectives on life in the universe that feed our curiosity and leave us wanting more.
Our community has a passion for science, as evidenced by its many top-flight universities doing ground-breaking research. Our local programs and initiatives strengthen awareness, understanding and interest in science and showcase the scientific, medical and technological achievements in the region. Visit nineNet.org/topics/science to take in the breadth of our science programming.
PREPPING FOR A MISSION TO MARSOur exploration of the universe continues with a new Think Wednesday on November 15. First up is 2016’s Emmy award-winner A Year in Space, part one of astronaut Scott Kelly’s 12-month stay on the International Space Station (ISS). The epitome of extreme, with extraordinarily high physical stakes, it is the longest space mission in American history. The premiere of part two, Beyond a Year in Space, picks up the story with Scott Kelly’s last day in space and return to Earth.
Beyond a Year in Space follows Scott in space and his identical twin Mark Kelly at home on Earth. It tells the story of what it takes, mentally and physically, to spend a year in space and then, using what NASA has learned from the Kelly brothers, what it means for humanity as we journey to Mars and beyond.
It chronicles astronaut Scott Kelly’s return and adjustment to life on Earth. It follows his homecoming and long-awaited reunion with his family in Texas after his mission in space with Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko.
The film also tracks the extensive medical testing undergone by Scott and his brother and fellow astronaut. As identical twins, the brothers presented NASA with the extraordinary opportunity of conducting experiments on two individuals who have the same genetic makeup but spent
the year in vastly different environments. The data from the twins study will help NASA determine what it will take for humans to endure long-duration space travel in preparation for a mission to Mars, an unprecedented three-year journey.
Although Scott maintained a rigorous exercise program in space, the physical toll of the voyage is evident on his return as he suffers from sore muscles, stiff joints, flu-like symptoms, skin sensitivity and inflammation. “Gravity definitely gives you a beat down when you get back,” he says. “My feet still bother me some, and I didn’t walk on them for a year!”
FEEDING YOUR C U R I O S I T YScott Kelly adjusts to life on earth after a record-breaking mission, as the next generation of astronauts prepares for deep space travel.

They are the most mysterious, most powerful, most destructive objects in the universe: black holes. Astrophysicists are coming to realize that black holes just might be integral to the structure of the universe—and our very existence. Black holes tell us a lot about the nature of space, time, and gravity. In a two-hour special, astrophysicist and novelist Janna Levin takes viewers on a journey to the frontiers of black hole science. Meet with the leading astronomers and physicists to discover cutting-edge research that is helping to shed light on these shadowy monsters. Premieres January 10 at 8:00 p.m.
COMING IN JANUARY 2018Nova: Black Hole Apocalypse
FARTHER THAN EVER BEFOREBeyond a Year in Space introduces two new astronauts preparing to venture farther than humankind has ever gone: biologist Jessica Meir and former Navy pilot Victor Glover (both selected by NASA in 2013), and provides a behind-the-scenes look at how they are training to go the distance.
While first-generation astronauts were mostly “top guns” chosen for their experience in flying untested vehicles, the new generation is a diverse team with a wide variety of backgrounds and skill sets. The film follows Meir and Glover at NASA and at home, exploring their lives as astronauts and as individuals as each expresses what it means to carry on the legacy of the astronauts who came before them.
“Now that we have spent decades exploring the low-Earth orbit where the space station operates, the next question, I think, as a human species is, ‘What’s next?,’” says Meir. “What is the next step toward furthering our presence in the cosmos, in the solar system, in our universe?”
“When I was backing away from that space station I was reflecting on the fact that we built this space station in low-Earth orbit,” says Kelly. “It’s the size of a football field—a million pounds. I think it’s the hardest thing people have ever done. I feel very strongly that if we can do this, we can do anything. As future explorers, I would say if we decide we want to go to Mars, we can go to Mars.”
Featuring TIME’s Jeffrey Kluger, science journalist Miles O’Brien, NASA scientists, engineers and doctors, and a special appearance by Apollo 13 astronaut Jim Lovell, Beyond a Year in Space provides historical background on space exploration and connects the experiences of the earliest astronauts on manned space flights to those paving the way for the future of space exploration today.
ON THE WEB, SOCIAL & STREAMINGThe A Year in Space website on pbs.org features exclusive short-form videos detailing aspects of life on the International Space Station, as well as photos and videos shot during the mission. Visitors can also explore biographies and learn more about the Twin Study. A social media hub and archival materials from PBS about space exploration can also be found on the
site. Follow and use the hashtag #BeyondYearinSpacePBS.
Beyond a Year in Space will be available to stream the morning after broadcast on PBS platforms, including PBS.org and PBS apps for iOS, Android, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Chromecast.
PBS Digital Studios’ Space Time explores the outer reaches of space, the craziness of astrophysics, the possibilities of sci-fi and anything else imaginable beyond planet Earth.

Nine Networking
Long-time Nine Network collaborator and Emmy®-winning television host Catherine Neville has announced a new, national program set to debut next fall. The Nine Network is proud to act as presenting station of tasteMAKERS as it is distributed to public television stations around the country through American Public Television (APT).
TasteMAKERS will explore the maker movement across the United States and introduce America to the local artisans who are redefining their respective food categories and bringing passion and artistry to the products they create. In its first 13-episode season, the series will visit locales from oyster farms off Washington’s coast, to wood-fired bakeries in the woods of North Carolina, and highlight the work of lots of innovative makers in between.
The show will cater to rising enthusiasm for locally sourced food and drink, and showcase the artisan food culture that inspires many of the professional chefs currently in the television spotlight.
“I am especially excited about the opportunity to produce a nationally televised culinary show out of St. Louis,”
Catherine Neville said. “Feast TV has been able to draw attention to so many of our city and our state’s culinary hotspots, it’s amazing to be able to do the same for avant-garde food enthusiasts across the country, and I’m grateful to the Nine Network and APT for that opportunity.”
Nine Network President and CEO Jack Galmiche recognized the potential of a series focused on the maker move-ment. He thought Neville would be the perfect host for a nationally distributed program given the wide appeal of both the highly rated Feast TV and regularly sold-out Taste & See events hosted by Neville and the Nine Net-work in the Public Media Commons.
“We’ve greatly enjoyed the relationship we’ve had with Cat over the past five years and have enjoyed watching Feast TV grow into one of the most-watched shows on the Nine Network,” said Galmiche. “We look forward to continuing to work with Cat and American Public Television to ensure the new show’s highest audience numbers and broadest distribution possible.”

The Nine Network is proud to showcase films that have inspiring messages about our war veterans this November, in commemoration of Veterans Day (November 11), a day to honor American veterans of all wars. We hope you will be as proud of these programs and veterans as we are.
The final four episodes of the repeat broadcast of The Vietnam War air Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. in November. Nine World channel has also dedi-cated more than 40 programs in the month of November to veterans and their families.
Take Me Home Huey Take Me Home Huey documents contemporary artist Steve Maloney’s transformation of a Vietnam-era med-evac Huey helicopter from a wounded war bird, shot down in combat in 1969, into a colorful sculpture, with a mission to help veterans recover from post-traumatic stress disorder. The film has a St. Louis connection: one of the pilots of the transformed Huey was Eric Berla. Berla is a graduate of Washington University School of Dentistry, lives in University City, and has a dental practice in Waterloo, Ill.
Tuesday, November 7, 10:00 p.m., repeats November 10 at 1:00 a.m.
POV: Almost Sunrise POV (a cinema term for "point of view") is television's longest-running showcase for independent nonfiction films. In this film, two friends embark on an epic 2,700-mile trek on foot across America, seeking redemption and healing as a way to close the moral chasm opened by war. Almost Sunrise is an intimate film that eschews stereotypes and instead captures an unprecedented portrait of veterans—one of hope, potential and untold possibilities.

The story of the groundbreaking Ken Burns and Lynn Novick series features key moments in the 10-part series carefully woven together to convey the essence of the landmark production. It also includes stories generated by PBS stations across America on the
impact of the war. Featuring interviews with the filmmakers, it conveys the historical drama that unfolds within the film, while crafting a sensitive snap-shot of this monumental achievement.
Tuesday, November 28, 10:00 p.m.
VA: The Human Cost of War This documentary film explores the history of the Department of Veterans Affairs—from the troubled beginnings of the Veterans Bureau of the 1920s to the modern VA system. The film chronicles, in often wrenching detail, the workings of this crucial, but at times beleaguered, American institution: exploring what it does and how it functions, its vast size and critical impor- tance, its history and provenance. Find out how and why it came into existence, how and why it has changed over time, how it has come to be broken in critical ways in recent generations and how it may be reformed going forward.
Tuesday, November 14, 10:00 p.m., repeats November 18 at 2:00 a.m.
The Candy Bomber
The inspiring story of United States Air Force command pilot Colonel Gail Seymour "Hal" Halvorsen, whose simple gesture of goodwill won the hearts of a former enemy and made him a hero to people around the world. He and his fellow American pilots dropped more than two million tons of supplies and 23 tons of candy between June 1948 and September 1949 to German citizens and children during the Berlin Airlift.

The Beatles: Eight Days a Week Ron Howard’s authorized and highly acclaimed documentary film is about The Beatles’ phenomenal early career. It reveals their inner workings — how they made decisions, created their music and built their collective career together — while exploring their extraordinary and unique musical gifts and their remarkable, complementary personalities. The film captures the exhilaration of The Beatles’ phenomenal rise to fame as well as the toll it eventually took on the band’s members, prompting them to stop touring and devote their prodigious musical talents to their groundbreaking studio recordings.

Veterans Coming Home Two documentary shorts from the Veterans Coming Home project look at challenges our veterans face when they leave the military, and why their struggles matter to veterans and civilians alike. Veterans Coming Home is an innovative public media project exploring the lives of post-9/11 veterans, the divide
between them and their communities, and the stereotypes that veterans and civilians hold about each other. Why does this divide exist? How does it affect communities across the country? And why does it matter? November 6, 13, 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Mayors of ShiprockEvery Monday night in the small community of Shiprock, New Mexico, a group of young Navajo leaders meet to decide how they will help their community. For more than seven years, the Northern Diné Youth Committee has worked to give youth opportunities to directly make changes within their
community. But while the NDYC works to make changes, many members also consider their own futures, commitments to family and the world outside of the Shiprock. While they love their community, they all must consider their options both on and off the reservation. November 6, 7:00 p.m.

Nature: Soul of the Elephant Ironically, every dead elephant with its ivory intact is a reason to celebrate. It means an elephant died of natural causes, not bullets, snares or poison, and a soul was allowed to be celebrated and mourned by its herd. Shot over two years, the filmmakers start with the remains of two bull elephants and, through a series of key flashbacks, look at the lives they would have led, the dramas they may have seen, their great migrations for water with their families, and their encounters with lions and hyenas.

Last Tango in Halifax Holiday Special The popular British romantic drama continues the compelling story of childhood sweethearts, both widowed and in their 70s, who fall for each other a second time when they are reunited on the internet after nearly 60 years. As their lives collide, the couple laments what might have been as they begin a life-affirming journey together.
