Nature:Wild France takes viewers on a journey through France’s unexpectedflora and fauna – a more wild side than “our” Paris onthe strip. NOVA: Sunken Ship Rescue follows the epicoperation to secure, raise and salvage the tragicallycapsized Costa Concordia cruise ship.

Vegas PBS continues to air local productions thatuniquely present the complexities of Southern Nevada.This month, we will broadcast the governor’s State ofthe State Address, the CCSD Superintendent’s State of the District Address, and a newtravel show, Southwest Living with Outdoor Nevada local favorite Brian Wignall.

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and Vegas PBS will offer program-ming to shed light on the impact of this crime in our valley. With financial support fromour Women’s Engagement Council, Vegas PBS produced Sex Trafficking: It’s OurBusiness. This one-hour program presents over a dozen local experts who discuss traf-ficking of minors in Southern Nevada, what it is, how it affects all of us, and what couldbe done about it.We’ve paired the broadcast with the PBS premiere of A Path Appears,a three-part national series that uncovers gender-based oppression and human rightsviolations facing women and girls across the globe.

We’ll also air two powerful documentaries that examine what it’s like to live withParkinson’s disease. Living with Parkinson’s: Sandra Ransel’s Story of Deep BrainStimulation (DBS) tells the story of a CCSD high school principal who received diagno-sis and treatment for her condition from our local Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center forBrain Health and the Cleveland Clinic.The same night we’ll air Living with Parkinson’s,which reveals the challenges of this progressive, degenerative and incurable brain disorder.

Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey, Season 5Sundays at 9 p.m. beginning January 4

At long last, the agonizing wait is over!Get ready to settle into your favorite arm-chair and relish the costumes, the intrigueand the beloved characters of the new sea-son of this gorgeous drama. We pick up plotthreads left dangling from last season –Lady Mary’s courtship contest, Lady Edith’strials as a secret single mom, Thomas’sscheming against Bates, Robert’s battlesagainst modernity,Tom’s quest to be true tohis ideals, and many, many more.

One of the recurring themes of the seriesis change – from the wrenching conse-quences of the Titanic disaster,World War I,women’s rights and a notorious automobileaccident. Similarly, Season 5 begins withchange. This time, it is the new morals,inventions and fashions of the 1920s. TheUnited Kingdom has its first Labour Partyprime minister. The radio is the latest mira-cle of the age. Downton’s traditional waysare besieged on all fronts, as evidenced bythis exchange between the head housekeep-er, Mrs. Hughes, and the butler, Mr. Carson:

“We’re catching up, Mr. Carson. Whetheryou like it or not, Downton is catching upwith the times we live in,” says the forward -thinking Mrs. Hughes.

“That’s exactly what I’m afraid of!” thebutler retorts.

The story begins with a sad, but pre-dictable suicide. It’s an open-and-shut case,according to Geordie, the overworkedinspector in charge of the investigation.However, people confide things to a parishpriest that they never tell police, which iswhy Sidney comes to suspect murder. Hisfirst hurdle is to convince Geordie thatthere’s more to Staunton’s death thanmeets the eye. Both were victims of sink-holes, a notorious hazard that lurks wherev-er limestone bedrock is found. When carbondioxide dissolves in rainwater, it forms aweak acid that attacks the soft limestone.While this process of erosion takes millionsof years, the fragile roof of a cavern can col-lapse in the blink of an eye with little or noadvance warning. When research indicated thebones actually dated to the mid-1700s, theimplications became even more dramatic.This was no ordinary house – 36 Craven Street,London was the former residence of one ofthe most important men in American history,Benjamin Franklin. This program follows the epic operationto secure, raise and salvage the CostaConcordia cruise ship that ran aground andcapsized off the coast of Italy on January13, 2012.This tragedy resulted in the deathof 32 passengers. Moving the ship – whichstretches the length of three football fields,weighs more than 114,000 tons and lies

As the civil rights movement grew, the long-dormant Ku Klux Klan

gained momentum as well. That the Klan would rise once again wasn’t

surprising, but where the reincarnation took place was. North Carolina,

long considered the most progressive southern state and one whose

image was being burnished by the enormously popular The Andy

Griffith Show, saw a boom in Klan membership under the leadership

of Bob Jones. In just three years, he grew the North Carolina Klan

from a handful of friends to some 10,000 members – more than the

Klans of all other southern states combined. In the process, Jones

helped give the state a new nickname:“Klansville U.S.A.”

A long-running popularprogram, we pick up the series at the begin-ning of Season 10. The story begins with amysterious Argentinian pistol recoveredfrom the Thames. Not only did it appear tohave been fired in the Falklands War, but itwas also matched to two unsolved murders,including one on the Rock of Gibraltar threedecades ago. The gang flies out to theMediterranean where they begin to uncovera conspiracy involving cocaine smuggling,military corruption and high-stakes gam-bling.

From presidential progeny to feloniousforebears, family secrets are uncovered in anall-new season of this surprise-filled series.Part detective story, part emotional journey,the show uncovers fascinating stories ofdiverse Americans who want to explore unver-ified genealogical claims passed down throughfamily history that may or may not connectthem to an event or a historical figure. Eachindividual’s past links to a larger communityhistory, revealing the rich cultural tapestry ofAmerica.

This season, the series makes stops in St.Louis, Philadelphia, and New Orleans. Thesecities were chosen as American crossroads ofculture, diversity, industry and history. Afterpotential participants in these cities nominatethemselves, experts choose the most com-pelling stories and use resources in genealogy,history and DNA, as well as family heirlooms,letters, pictures, historical documents andother clues to hunt down the truth behind thefamilial myths. The most compelling answersare revealed on camera to the participantsbefore a local audience on location at a build-ing relevant to the histories of the cities andthe participants.

It’s the ultimate baking battle where passionate fans compete to be crowned the UK’s best

amateur baker. This immensely popular British series now comes to Vegas PBS! We follow the

competitors’ trials and tribulations as they attempt to prove their culinary prowess. Each week

the contestants tackle a different baking skill which becomes progressively more difficult as

the competition unfolds.

In each episode, the bakers are given three challenges. A competitor is eliminated each week

until the final episode when three bakers are left and a winner is chosen from the three.

The Baking Challenges Include

• Signature Challenge – A bake using a tried and tested recipe that the cooks make for

their family and friends.

• Technical Challenge – A bake using the same ingredients and recipe provided by judges

Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. However, the recipe is intentionally sparse and has

missing instructions since it is designed to test the knowledge and skill of the bakers.

The contestants are not told beforehand what the challenge might be.

• Showstopper Challenge – A bake designed to impress the judges in terms of taste and

presentation.

Be a part of the triumphs and tragedies of these hopeful bakers in their quest to rise and

his month, we are delighted to launch a redesign of Vegas PBS Source. We

began the redesign process several months ago by surveying our members to

learn what they liked and what could be improved. Online and home delivery of

this program guide is a signature benefit of becoming a Vegas PBS member,

and we wanted to make sure the magazine was meeting your needs. The response was

overwhelming. We heard from hundreds of our members about how you value the magazine

and enjoy reading the descriptions of upcoming programs to plan your month of viewing

on Vegas PBS.

Based on your feedback, we have kept the most popular

features in place. You’ll continue to find in-depth descrip-

tions of arts, drama, history, and science and nature pro-

grams each month, as well as information on upcoming

ticket opportunities, trips and special events, now with

more prominent placement inside the magazine.

We learned how much you rely on the program grids to plan your viewing each week, so

we’ve added more hours to the program grids that now include the hours between 6-8 p.m.,

11 p.m. - midnight, and the weekend daytime hours.

Because so many of you responded that you enjoy our how-to, cooking and lifestyle pro-

gramming on Vegas PBS Create, we’ve added a special page devoted to that channel that

includes an overview of the daily schedule and program spotlights. We also showcase pro-

grams across our family of channels, including Vegas PBS Rewind, Jackpot!, Vme and

Worldview, and provide a guide for how you can tune in to these channels either over the air,

from your local cable or satellite provider, or on Internet connected devices like Roku, Apple

TV, ChromeCast and Xbox.

Another new feature is this column. In this space each month you will hear from different

members of Vegas PBS staff who will share the work they are doing to extend the reach of

public television’s nonprofit education and program services throughout Southern Nevada,

including providing job training and adult education courses, classroom resources for teach-

ers, family engagement workshops for preschool children and their parents, developing new

local productions, forging new community partnerships and more.

This magazine will continue to evolve as we hear from you and make adjustments to

Odd Squad Saves the World January 19 at 8 a.m.

The kids have a holiday from school on January 19, but that doesn’t mean the learninghas to stop! Odd Squad comes to the rescue with a special one-hour program airing at8 a.m., repeating at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and at those same times on Friday, January 23.Also don’t miss the premiere of three brand new episodes on Tuesday-Thursday, January20-22 in the show’s regular time slot at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

This live-action series is designed to help kids ages 5 -8 learn math. The show focuses ontwo young agents, Olive and Otto, who are part of the Odd Squad, an agency whose missionis to save the day whenever something unusual happens in their town. By the time he died in 1931, Thomas Alva

Edison was one of the most famous men in

the world.As the holder of more patents than

any other inventor in history, he developed

such revolutionary inventions as sound

recording, motion pictures and electric light.

With just three months of formal schooling,

he took on one seemingly impossible techni-

cal challenge after another. Driven and intensely competitive, Edison was

often neglectful in his private life and could be ruthless in business. This

documentary offers new perspectives on the man and his milieu.

The MarchMonday, January 19 at 10 p.m.

Witness the compelling and dramatic story of the 1963 March on

Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King gave his stirring “I Have a

Dream” speech. This watershed event in the Civil Rights Movement helped

change the face of America. The film reveals the dramatic story behind the

event through the memories of historians, journalists, authors and ordinary

citizens who joined some 250,000 Americans who came in throngs to the

capital to peacefully demand an end to two centuries of discrimination and

injustice. The film is narrated by Denzel Washington.

Independent Lens: The Trials of Muhammad AliThursday, January 1 at 10 p.m.

This documentary covers Muhammad Ali’s toughest bout, his battle to overturn his

five-year prison sentence for refusing U.S. military service. As Cassius Clay became

Muhammad Ali, he found himself in the crosshairs of conflicts concerning civil

rights, religion and wartime dissent. This film zeroes in on the years from 1967

to 1970, when Ali lived in exile within the U.S. During that time, he was stripped of

his heavyweight belt and banned from boxing, sacrificing fame and fortune for

his principles.

PlayedMondays at 10 p.m. The dramatic series follows the CovertInvestigations Unit (CIU), an elite undercov-er police unit that infiltrates criminalworlds. In nerve-wracking confidencegames, or “plays,” these cops flirt withkillers, befriend gangs and arrange gun ship-ments – all to collect evidence and coaxconfessions. CIU cops think quickly and relyon their charisma to inspire trust. Butundercover “plays” are unpredictable. Ifthese cops aren’t convincing, their livescould be over in an instant.

Rick Steves Special: A Symphonic JourneySaturday, January 24 at 9 p.m. Rick Steves teams up with the Cascade Symphony Orchestra and maestro Michael Miropolskyfor a musical journey that beings in the United States and touches down in seven differentEuropean countries. The special celebrates music’s power to stir the patriotic soul. Playingmusical tour guide, Steves utilizes his extensive knowledge of European history and culture tohelp set the context for each piece. Then, the orchestra performs a selection of stirring 19th-century anthems by Romantic-era composers, including Grieg, Smetana, Strauss, Berlioz,Elgar, Wagner and Verdi. Each selection honors a particular nationality, while the finale,Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” (Europe’s official anthem) pays homage to the continent’s mottoof “United in Diversity.” The music is accompanied by a montage of evocative video imagesfrom each country.
