Doug Brubaker, Ph.D. Week of August 2, 2019 SUMMER TECH FEST – JULY 30 The district's first Summer Tech Fest was on July 30. Students were occupied with STEM activities while parents were able to learn about Internet Safety 101 Chromebook Essentials and the night ended with a showing of “Screenagers; Growing Up in the Digital Age”. It was a fun learning experience for all! Thanks to LeeAndra White, president of the Fort Smith Council of PTA, Leslie Brodie, Science Coordinator and her team of STEM educators and Eden Buergler, Technology Integration Specialist and her team of Tech teachers for a remarkable evening focusing on the tools that enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the Fort Smith Public Schools. Thanks also to Whitney Yoder and Cox Communication for sponsoring "Screenagers: Growing Up in a Digital Age", to Hiland Dairy and FSPS Child Nutrition for ice cream, to Coca-Cola for sodas and water, and to Arvest Bank for delicious popcorn. DISTRICTAWARDSChaffinandRamseyQuizBowlTeamsThissummer,bothChaffinandRamseyquizbowlteamsplacedattheNationalQuizBowltournaments.ChaffinreceivedfirstplaceinChicago,whileRamseyplacedsecondplaceinNewOrleans.LoriGriffinLoriGriffin,principalatBallmanElementary,earnedthetitleofEducationalAdministratoroftheYearfromtheFortSmithAssociationofEducationalOfficeProfessionalsKathrynEwingKathrynEwing,anEnglishteacheratBellePoint,wasnominatedandwonthetitleofTeacheroftheYearbytheArkansasAssociationofAlternativeEducators.DejahStephensDejahStephens,whoteachesatOrrElementary,earnedFortSmithTeacheroftheYear.Shewasalsooneof15teachersnamedas2020ArkansasTeacheroftheYearRegionalfinalists.NorthsideHighSchoolDramaandChoir WhenKatyFeatherston,choirdirectoratNorthsideHighSchoolrealizedthatNorthsidehadn’tdoneamusicalinatleast12years,sherecruiteddramateacherRobynFowlertocollaborateandcreatesomethingincredible.Northside’shardworkfortheirproductionof“OnceOnThisIsland”receivednationalrecognition.RobynFowlersenttheNationalYouthArtsCouncilatapingoftheplayandbasedontheirperformance,threeNorthsidestudentswerenominatedforSupportingPerformanceinaMusicalandMadeleineNewmanwonandacceptedtheaward.WailonHeuangwilaiasAgwe,AbbyHopeasAsaka,AngelKeohacksaasPapaGe,werealsonominatedforthesameawardfortheiroutstandingperformancesintheproduction.GordonManleyGordonManley,banddirectorofNorthsideHighSchoolfor32years,wasrecentlyawardedthetitleofArkansasBandmasteroftheYear!BarlingSixthGradeNationalHistoryDayFoursixthgradersfromBarlingElementary,LaylaRandels,JaxonWaite,PatsyGraham,andMadisonNixon,wonthestatedocumentaryforNationalHistoryDay.Fromthere,theywenttoNationalswheretheyplaced10thinthenationoutof101otherschools!Theirteachers,TeresaJohnsonandJenniferShurehelpedthestudentswiththedocumentaryandhelpedthemalongtheirroadtosuccess.

TheconcurrentcoursesforFall2019areEnglishCompositionI,CollegeAlgebra,USHistory(SHS),andWesternCivilization(NHS-OnlineCourse).TheconcurrentcoursesforSpring2020areEnglishCompositionII,ProbabilityandStatistics,Trigonometry(SHS),USHistory(SHS),Sociology(SHS)andPsychology(NHS).
