1. Introduction

New research in the field of telecommunications has led to the extension of the range of services provided to the users, especially in the mobile telephony networks. The TOPEX Group is promoting the advanced facilities provided by the CDMA wireless network, by manufacturing the TOPEX-ACCESS range of products.

The ACCESS family of CDMA wireless devices are new electronic equipment, compact size, that use an updated design and are easy to mount and install.

The economic benefits of ACCCESS-type user-network interfaces are considerable. The user of these services can perform several activities at the same time, such as data transmission, Internet connection, checking of geographical coordinates by GPS.

The high data transfer speed specific to the CDMA-450 (Zapp Mobile operator in Romania) communications leads to an increased efficiency of information transmission, while the real time access to data and information means savings of time and money.

In order to ensure a correct installation / configuration and a good operation of the Access-LAN equipment, the manufacturer strongly recommends you to study this manual before attempting operation.

3. ACCESS – general presentation

The Access-LAN equipment was designed to be mounted either in horizontal or vertical position.

It is composed of:

Electronic circuit (populated circuit board) Equipment case Power supply

Electronic circuit

This is an interface that allows the outside (Internet) access of a LAN network using the CDMA 450 mobile telephony network.

For this it uses as modem a Hyundai H-100 mobile phone that is internally connected to the Access-LAN unit. The mobile phone in connected internally to the ACCESS equipment, in the cradle specially provided on the printed circuit board.

Access-LAN functions as a gateway, since it provides access to an external network. The structure of messages is transmitted using standard communications protocols (TCP/IP, PPP, ARP etc.).

The electronic circuit also generates the supply voltage required by the cellphone, which is powered directly from the ACCESS equipment.

Protective case

The case is made of plastic, houses the cellphone and protects the electronic circuit. It has a modern design, compact size and it features openings for connectors, power supply jack and the optical indicator.

Power supply

It supplies the voltage required to power the Access-LAN equipment.

An external AC adapter that plugs into a wall outlet supplies access-LAN. This adapter is in fact a transformer ( 220V c.a. / 10V c.a.) The LED optical indicator lights to show the presence of the supply voltage.

4. Installing the Access - LAN

In order to ensure the proper operation of the ACCESS equipment you must follow the set-up steps shown below:

1. Configuring the menu of the cellphone2. Connecting the ACCESS equipment3. Installing the external antenna 4. Mounting the equipment

4.1Configuring the cellphone menu

To ensure the compatibility of the cellphone settings to the requirements of ACCESS equipment, take care to perform the following settings before connecting the phone to Access-LAN. The required settings (menu configuration) are shown in Table 2.

4.2. Connecting the ACCESS equipment

To ensure a proper functioning of the Access-LAN, you must make the right cable connections, as it is described below. Please note that the ACCESS equipment has two kinds of connections: internal connections (joining up the cellphone) and external ones (supply and data cables).

Internal connectionsWarning! Handle the equipment with care!4.2.1. Open carefully the front lid of the equipment case, avoiding touching or moving the components on the circuit board.

4.2.1 Fasten the cellphone to the holder specially provided on the circuit board. The holder has holding clamps for fastening the cellphone. Access-LAN has a connector for the cellphone antenna, and upon fastening the phone the equipment connector must fit to the antenna connector of the cellphone.

4.2.2 Couple the internal connection cable between the cellphone and the ACCESS equipment. Insert the special Hyundai H-100 connector in the proper socket of the mobile phone, located on the lower backside of the phone (see drawing in figure 2).

4.2.3 Connect the data cables, depending on the type of connection that your application requires:

For serial programming connection: the serial cable is to be connected to the DB9 socket of the ACCESS equipment (“B” connector), while the “A” connector is to be inserted into the serial port (COM) of the computer.

For network cable connection: use a normal se UTP network cable (fitted with RJ45 connectors at both ends). The network cable is to be inserted with one end into the LAN socket of the equipment, while the other end must be fitted to the local network Hub or switch.

4.2.4 Power up the Access-LAN using the external adapter: plug the adapter into the wall socket than insert the power supply jack in the special connector located on the side of the Access-LAN equipment (marked as “A” in figure 2)

To avoid accidents or damage to the equipment, follow the steps described earlier. Thus, you should NOT connect the internal cellphone while the Access-LAN equipment is powered.

4.3 Installing the external antenna

To ensure a high quality of transmission and reduce radio interference you may use the external antenna, which was designed to optimally capture the radio signal of the wireless network. The external antenna is to be used whenever the signal strength is low, in order to ensure reliable transmission and a high data rate. It is highly recommended to use an antenna at all times.

The external antenna must be attached to a flat ferrous surface, since the antenna incorporates in its base a magnet.

To connect the antenna to Access-LAN you insert the jack on its cable into the antenna socket of the equipment.

Notice: The external antenna should be installed such as to be as far as possible from appliances or office equipment that is sensitive to radio interference (copiers, TV sets, PC displays, multimedia systems). For best results, try to find for the antenna a place of maximum signal reception.

Also, the antenna must NOT be located near heavy-duty equipment that may generate electromagnetic interferences, such as electric motors or heaters.

Significance of the status LEDAccess-LAN includes a LED indicator, which lights up to show

that the supply voltage is on (upon connecting the external adapter the LED must light up).

4.4 Mounting the Access - LAN

You may mount the Access-LAN as you wish, either vertically, on a wall or cabinet, or horizontally, on a table or desk. The external antenna must be placed in a location than ensures maximum signal strength.

Wall Mounting

You fasten on the back of the MobiLink case the bridles for attaching the equipment to the wall.

Each attachment flange requires two special wood screws. You proceed as follows:- Unscrew the two short fastening screws of the case, in the area

(up or down) where you will mount the bridles; - Insert the bridles in the openings of the case- Fasten the bridles to the case by using the two long wood screws

(you find them in the bag with the bridles)- Bore holes in the wall- Insert the plastic dowels in the holes, using a hammer- Place the MobiLink case against the wall, then fasten it to the wall

by threading the big yellow wood screws (you find them in the bag with the dowels)-

Desk mounting

If you mount the Access-LAN equipment on a horizontal surface you do not need anymore to fasten the attachment clamps or to use the wood screws (it is shown in Figure 5 that you can take off the clamps).

The equipment is just placed directly on the desk, shelf or table.

In any case, you must mount the Access-LAN equipment as far as possible from equipment susceptible to radio interferences (computer monitors, audio-video appliances such as radio, TV sets, videorecorders, copying machines, etc.)

Also, it must not be near heavy-duty machinery that might generate such interferences.

5. Configuring the equipment

Access-LAN achieves the wireless connection to Internet of a local computer network (LAN). The equipment supplies the capabilities for high-speed data transfer using an Ethernet network interface type 10 Base-T.

To properly perform its functions of wireless high-speed gateway, Access-LAN must be properly configured. “Configuring” or programming the equipment means adequate setting of all the network parameters.

The embedded firmware allow you to configure Access-LAN without the need of additional software on the programming computer, you just need a communication program. This means that Access-LAN may be used on any computer platform and is not restricted to a certain operating system!

The configuration can be performed either locally, using the programming serial link, or remotely, by Telnet.

The initiation of a data link can be done only after you have connected the serial connection cable and the status LED lights up, showing that the equipment is under power.

You can program the equipment either locally, through the serial programming connection, or remotely by Telnet.

To configure the Access-LAN you must run on the computer connected to the equipment a program such as HyperTerminal from Microsoft Windows of Minicom from Linux.

Upon power-up, Access-LAN operates with parameters that are already programmed. After starting Access-LAN, the user may configure the working parameters as fitted to his requirements.

“Configuring” means the possibility of selecting a different set of parameters (settings) for the operation of the equipment. For configuring, Access-LAN is provided with a serial programming port that allows the examination and the modification of parameters (programming the equipment). This is performed by means of text command entered using the keyboard.The initial communication parameters for the serial link are the usual ones: 9600 8,N, 1.

After starting up HyperTerminal, press any key and the screen will display the message „Introduceţi parola” asking for the password. To be able to configure Access-LAN, you must enter the correct password:

The default password is 1234. After getting into the menu, you may change this initial password. If you key in the correct password the screen will show the main menu (the list of available commands).

Next you will be shown the commands for configuring the Access-LAN equipment.

5.1. Password programming

This command allows you to change the password for access to the configuring menu. If you select this option the screen will display:

asking you for the new password. You key in the new password you wish to use (maximum length 16 characters) and press the “Enter” key; the prompter will show:

VerificareFor checking the password, enter again the new password followed by confirmation (Enter).

After checking the new password you go back to the main menu. If the password has been rejected, the prompter will display again the request for a new password:

Note: At any moment you can go back to the main menu by pressing the “Esc” key. The new password is valid until you power down Access-LAN and then you restart it. If you want the new password to be kept permanently you must select the menu option called “Salvare in FLASH”. This helds true for any configuring (change of settings) performed upon the Access-LAN gateway: the changes are saved into the non-volatile Flash memory so they are kept even after resetting the equipment by powering it down.

5.2 Gateway Programming

Access-Lan performs the functions of a gateway, equipment that connects one or more local networks (LAN) to the outside world (Internet). To be able to fulfill this function, you must configure proper parameters on both interfaces of the equipment, the inside interface and the external interface.

The connection to inside (local) networks is through the Ethernet port of Access-LAN (named further on as ETH), while the connection to the outside world is through the modem of the CDMA cellphone. Since external interface uses PPP (point-to-Point Protocol) it will be named from this point forward just “PPP”

The programming of the Access-LAN gateway for ensuring access to the outside world includes the options shown in the following list (configuring screen).

IP_ETH xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.Allows changing the inside IP address (on the ETH interface) of the Access-LAN equipment. The parameter is the IP address of Access-LAN on the inside interface (for instance: 192.168.1.1.)

MaSK_ETH xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxAllows the alteration of the sub-network mask of the Access-LAN equipment on the internal interface.The parameter is the sub-net mask address of Access-LAN on the ETH interface (a typical subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.)

IP_PPP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx The parameter is the external IP address with which the negotiation through the PPP connection is started.

DNS_PPP 0.0.0.0DNS (Domain Name Server) address of the CDMA server, address with which the negotiation through PPP connection begins. The parameter is the requested address.

If the CDMA server has available the address requested by Access-LAN, it will allocate it. If that address is already taken, you will get another available address. The value 0.0.0.0 means that negotiation no longer takes place, the IP and DNS addresses will be allocated by the server to which Access-LAN connects over CDMA.

PPP_USER xxxxxx The user name by which you authenticate to the computer contacted through the PPP connection.

PPP_PASSWORD xxxxxxThe password for that user name, by which you authenticate to the computer contacted through the PPP connection.

For receiving messages you must also configure the dynamic DNS parameters:

IP_DYN_DNSSERVER xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxDYN_DOMAIN xxxxxxDYN_USER xxxxxDYN_PASSWORD xxxxx

These are options that allow use of the DYNAMICDNS service. If Access-LAN gets form the CDMA server a dynamic IP address (one that is changed upon each connection), then you can use the DYNAMICDNS service (IP_DYN_DNSSERVER) to allow someone that does not know its IP to access the equipment.

For this, Access-LAN registers itself at the DYNAMICDNS server with the IP “IP_DNS_DNSSERVER”. It will authentify using the adequate user name and password: DYN_USER DYN_PASSWORD

The registration will be done with the new IP address obtained from the provider of the Internet connection. This way, someone can get the IP of the Access-LAN equipment by making a DFNS request to the server IP_DYN_DNSSERVER with parameters DYN_USER.DYN_DOMAIN (the user name and domain name).

Each time it connects to Internet, Access-LAN will register to the DYNAMICDNS server 212.95.128.91 with its new IP address. Anyone can find out the IP address of the equipment if he performs a DNS request to the server 212.93.128.91 and asks which address is associated to the name in the example.

Example: test.dyn.topex.rdsnet.roIf the parameter IP_DYN_DNSSERVER is set to 0.0.0.0. then

the DYNAMICDNS is disabled.

Sending echoes at the level of PPP protocol towards the PPP server. T ECHO PPP (ms) (0-disable) xxxx

Example: T ECHO PPP (ms) 30000

The parameter is the time (in milliseconds) between two “echo” messages. This example will send an “echo” message every 30 seconds. If the server does not answer to these messages, then the dial up connection will be broken and made again. A zero value means that the echo function is disabled.

Activating the NETWORK ADDRESS TRANSLATION serviceNAT ENABLE (0/1)When enabled, the network address translation (NAT) services transforms the internal addresses in a single external address that is valid on the Internet. To be able to offer Internet connections to several connected through the ETH interface to the gateway, the NAT service will change the source IP of each packet that leaves for the provider to its own IP. Also, it will store the information required for the reverse translation, when receiving the data packets.

START PORT NAT (>1024) 61000The starting port used by the NAT service. NAT can replace the source port of the TCP and UDP packages with a higher port number than the initial one.

T TRAFIC (ms) (0-disable) 600.000Command for disabling the dial-up connection when there is no more traffic. If during the specified time interval (in milliseconds) no data packet is sent on the dial-up connection, then this connection is broken by the Access-LAN. If you set the time interval to (zero), the dial-up connection will remain always on.

T NAT ICMP (ms) (0 – disable) 10.000These options are values that show how long the correspondences for the TCP, UDP and ICMP packets are maintained in the NAT table (its associated data base). If for a certain protocol you set the time interval to zero, then the gateway will no longer perform address translation for that protocol.

Viteza serială 230.400Specifies the speed of the serial link to the dial-up modem. In this example the data transfer rate is set to 230.400 bps.

Port telnet PPP 23The port number for performing Telnet from outside (through the PPP connection) for configuring Access-LAN. After establishing the link, the screen of the remote computer will display the configuring menu, the same as in the case of local configuring through serial link using Hypertermina program. The parameter is the number of the port, and the default value is 23, the standard port for Telnet.The configuring through telnet has precedence over the local configuring by serial connection.

Ring WakeUp 1Activates the “wake up” function of the equipment when it receives a call.If Access-LAN has no traffic, the CDMA connection is shut down in order to avoid unnecessary costs. The “Ring WakeUp” features allow the equipment to wake up when it receives an incoming call through the CDMA network. Then Access-LAN makes again the PPP connection, allowing the data transfer.The value “1” means the waking function is enabled, while a “0” values means it is disabled.

Save (YIN)It is used to activate the changes performed in the current work session. Access-LAN may be configured at any time, there is no need for reset. Warning! The changes are saved just in the working memory of the equipment, which is volatile not permanent!If you want your settings to be still valid after resetting Access-LAN by powering it down, you must use the command „Salvare in FLASH” to save these chages into the non-volatile Flash memory.

5. 3. RoutingThe “Rutare” command is used to program the routing table of the Access-LAN gateway.

RoutingThere are two kind of routes: a. “a” routes, in which you specify a destination address and the interface through which the transmitted packet will be directed.b. “b” routes, for which you specify a destination address and the address of the gateway towards which the packet will be sent.

The routing command has the following options:

For “a” routes.

IPdest/lnet mask dzzzWhere: device “zzz” may be ppp – serial (external) interface

or Eth – Ethernet (local) interfacelnet mask - length of the sub-network mask for the target IP address.

For “b” routes.

IPdest/lnet mask gxxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.The parameter is the IP address of the gateway.

Example 1:192.168.1.0 /24 deth(all packets sent to Eth interface have 192.168.1.xxx as destination address)

Example 2:192.168.2.0 /24 g192.168.1.100(all packets that have the destination address 192.168.2.xxx will be sent to the gateway that has the IP address 192.168.1.100)

Example 3: 0.0.0.0./32 dpppthe default route, any other data packet is sent to the serial interface. The device “ppp” is the serial interface, so it does no longer matter what IP’s it has on this interface.

5. 4. Script dial This “script” is for setting the initial parameters of the dial-up connection to the Internet provider.

You enter the phone number on which the dial-up connection will be made, together with the initialization string for the data modem (AT commands).

Examples:AT8CO+CRM=150 ROK T1000This sends the string of characters „AT8CO+CRM=150” and waits for the „OK” answer for 1.000 milliseconds.

ATD#777 RCONNECT T300000The command sends the character string „#777” the waits for the „CONNECT” answer for as long as 30.000 milliseconds.

Also, you can issue a script dial command to the data modem and just wait for a time interval to end, that is the command has no R xxx option (it does no longer wait for an answer).

5. 5. PAT – Port address translationChanging the destination address and the destination port number.

PAT is used to change the destination address and port no. for the data packets that follow the rules in the table.

Example:

Proto – the standard protocol used for data transmission, in this case UDPIPd – IP destination address, 192.168.1.1 is the address of the gatewayPortd – destination port number, 53 is the port used for DNS requestsIPPAT – changes packet destination to IPPAT address (172.16.253.242 is the address of the server at the Internet provider)PortPAT – changes the destination port to PortPAT, in this case the same port 53.

The command shown as example makes that all DNS requests to the gateway to be forwarded to the computer with the IP 172.16.253.242, which is the server of the Internet provider.

5. 6. „Port Forwarding”

It is used when you want to redirect (forward) a connection from the PPP interface to a computer in the local ETH network.

Example:

Proto – protocol, in this example TCPPdest – destination port for the data packets coming from PPP, respectively port 80IPforward – the redirecting address, in this example the local network station with the IP 192.168.1.2Pforward – the redirecting port. 5. 7. FIREWALL

The firewall function is used to protect the local network against intrusion (unauthorized access from the outside). For this, the Access-LAN gateway has been provided with firewall feature that lets through or rejects incoming data packets following the rules in the table.

Dev – “device”, the interface from which the packet is sentProto – standard protocol that may be: TCP, UDP, ICMPIps/nm – specifies the IP source address and the sub-net mask for the package. If the parameter is set to 0.0.0.0/32 then the package may use any source.Ps – specifies the port source for sending the packet. If the value is set to 0 it means it can by any source port.Ipd/nm - specifies the IP destination address and the sub-net mask for the package. If the parameter is set to 0.0.0.0/32 then the data packet can have any destination.Pd - specifies the destination port for sending the packet. If the value is set to 0 it means that any destination port is allowed.F/D – indicates the usage of the incoming packet

F (forwarded) – the packet gets through the FIREWALL D (discarded ) – the packet is rejected, thrown away.

Examples:

All packets coming from the computer 192.168.1.2, with protocol TCP, are to be rejected (discarded).

All packets with TCP protocol from the serial interface, which have a source IP of the type 192.168.1.xxx (may come from the sub-net addresses from the ETH interface) will be discarded.

5. 8. Saving in FLASH

The “Salvare in FLASH” command is used to make final the changes of parameters you performed in the menu. As shown earlier, for each option of the programming menu the changes are saved only in the temporary RAM memory of the equipment, so these changes are kept only as long as Access-LAN is powered!

If you want your changed settings to become permanent, to be kept even after resetting the equipment by interrupting the power supply, then you must use the option „Salvare in FLASH”. Then the changes will be saved in the non-volatile Flash memory that ensures the long-term storage of your settings.

Access–LAN allows the connection of a local computer network (LAN) to the Internet over the CDMA mobile telephony network, by means of a mobile phone used as modem

The data transmission is performed at far greater speed then on the usual dial-up connection by phone line and you are no longer dependent from a fixed connection (telephone landline). Access-LAN acts as a „gateway” (a computer system that allows access to the outside world). The CDMA mobile phone plays the role of a high-speed modem for the wireless telephony network.

Using the classic technology, a POTS dial-up link, connection to Internet was achieved by means of a modem and a fixed phone line. In this case, the cost of the connection was the sum of the telephone bill for the fixed phone operator and the hourly subscription paid to one of the available Internet service providers.

By using Access-LAN you get rid of dual costs, you have to pay only the bill for ZappOnline subscription, while the data transmission speed is up to 153 Kbs. The main advantages are economical benefits and portability of the equipment.

Other benefits are derived from the advanced features of the CDMA wireless network: CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) is a very efficient and

robust technology, supporting both voice and data. It uses a digital spread-spectrum modulation technique that digitizes the conversation and tags it with a special frequency code. The data is then scattered across the frequency band in a pseudorandom pattern. The receiving device is instructed to decipher only the data corresponding to a particular code to reconstruct the signal.

By using spread-spectrum technique, CDMA offers higher capacity by sharing the same carrier frequency among multiple users without restoring to time division. This way one a capacity 3-4 times greater than other digital wireless platforms such as GSM and 8-10 times greater than for older analog cellular networks.

Due to its optimized radio technology, CDMA enables operators to invest in fewer cell sites and deploy them faster, ultimately allowing the service providers to increase their revenues with faster Return On Investment (ROI).

Data transmission rate is up to 153Kbps compared to only 9,6Kbps for classic GSM and 56-114Kbps for GPRS.

Advanced control of transmission power. The basic frame length is divided into several power control groups monitored by the base station. It ensures independent power control of both forward link and reverse link channels. This means lower

power peaks and elimination of interferences while achieving better coverage.

By diminishing the average power during transmission it ensures increased battery life. CDMA significantly enhances battery performance – for mobile equipment lower battery drain translates into increasing communications time.

Higher frequency band flexibility, it can be deployed in a very wide frequency range. CDMA networks have already been deployed in the 450 MHz, 800 MHz, 1700 MHz, and 1900 MHz bands and IMT-2000 bands are expected in 2003.

Better call quality with more consistent and improved sound, respectively more reliable data transmissions.

Less call congestion, decreasing the likelihood of not being able to get through with your voice or data call.

Superior area coverage per tower compared to analogue and GSM networks, making it particularly suitable both for remote rural areas and for crowded cities.

Advanced coding ensures increased call privacy - calls will be safe from the casual eavesdropper. It also reduces the possibility of crossed lines.

Reduced interference with other electronic devices such as radios, PDAs or other cellphones using the same frequency band.
