APRIL 2014 -- VOLUME 35 -- ISSUE 4 We have encouraged members of Olivet for the past several years to join us for Good Friday services on the Friday before Easter. We have experienced some incredibly meaningful times together in worship as we remembered the night Jesus was crucified and buried. This year we will continue that tradition. . .but with a new slant. Instead of gathering in the auditorium with candles and somber music, we will meet in homes for fellowship dinners, followed by a time of reflection, concluding with the Lord’s Supper led by one of our Elders or deacons. You will receive an invitation within the next ten days to join one of our Elders in a home on Good Friday night. The church will provide the meat for the meal and each member will be encouraged to bring a side dish. We are working on the plan to assign homes for each member so that we do not have a couple of homes overflowing and others with few attendees. So mark your calendar! Friday, April 18, at 6:30 pm. This is a tremendous opportunity for the “family” of Olivet to gather in smaller groups, enjoy a great meal and reflect on the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. You will receive a letter detailing the locations and assignments. We encourage you to make this a priority in your Easter week. Olivet, for several years, has enjoyed an Easter tradition of breakfast together as a church family on Resurrection Sunday. It is a tradition filled with great food, excellent fellowship and an anticipation of worshiping together to celebrate the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ! This year is no different. We will gather Easter Sunday morning in the gym for a great breakfast prepared by a team led by Tom and Sheryle Pollan. The team will prepare breakfast for us to enjoy as we sit together around the table and fellowship with one another as those who have experienced the grace and mercy of God the Father through His Son, Jesus! SMBS will be on a one-week hiatus so we can spend time as a church family enjoying a meal together and preparing our hearts for the most important Sunday of the year – Easter!!! Mark your calendar now and plan to join us from 9:30-10:30. Invite a family member or friend who is unchurched and bring them with you. They will love the food, be encouraged by the fellowship and challenged by the time of worship and teaching that follows. How do we believe? Why do we believe? As followers of Jesus, this is a crucial question because the world around us does not believe and is skeptical of those who do. Believing is not just an issue of accepting a group of facts. It is much deeper than that. Believing demands more than an intellectual agreement. Skeptics reject this next idea: believing is an issue of trust, or faith. This idea baffles the minds of many…even in the day of Jesus. Do we believe even when the “facts” tend to lead us to unbelief? What do we do when “logic” cannot answer life’s greatest ques- tions? Sunday, April 6, we will begin a three-week sermon series for Easter entitled, “Do You Believe?” The series will be built around three New Testament characters who interacted with Jesus. The first message will deal with father of a boy with an unclean spirit that the disciples were unable to cast out. The second message will focus on Jairus, a man whose daughter was dying. Easter Sunday we will look at Thomas, one of Jesus’ disciples, who doubted His resurrection. These stories carry a common theme – Do You Believe? It is valid question for followers of Jesus today. Do we believe He is who He says He is? Do we believe His Word is true and trustworthy? Do we believe that He is with us through the Holy Spirit? Do we believe that He is reigning for all of eternity and will welcome His children to join Him in the presence of the Father? Join us in April for three Sundays as we explore the question: Do You Believe? This would be a great opportunity to invite unchurched friends or family to join you. They will be challenged to look beyond what they can perceive with their eyes and minds and see Jesus in all His beauty and majesty in the resurrection. April 2014 -- volume 35 -- issue 4

We have encouraged members of Olivet for the past several years to join us for Good Friday services on the Friday before Easter.

“Wanna get away?” This simple, but now famous, question has served to put Southwest Airlines on the marketing map of success. Most any person who hears this quote can immediately recognize its origin. Why has this slogan served Southwest Airlines so well? Although there may be several reasons, I believe that one solid reason is because it clicks with people. The desire to “get away” resonates with us. From time to time, we all have the desire to retreat from the normal grind and just “get away” from it all. Sometimes this desire is concerning and unhealthy. However, sometimes this desire to retreat is natural and positive.

Coming up on May 2-3, a number of students and adults will be taking part in our first Spring Retreat. We will be heading up to Rock Springs 4-H Center in Junction City. I am beyond excited about this opportunity to “get away” with these students and adults. Why am I excited? I believe that retreats such as this one foster two important things: refreshment and relationship.

There is just something about getting away to spend intentional time with God and others that brings refreshment to the soul. It is almost as if we are given an opportunity to hit the “reset” button in our relationships with people and with the Lord. My hope is that through spending intentional time in the Word and in prayer throughout the weekend that this retreat will refresh our students’ love for Jesus and revive their desire to live for him in their daily lives.

Another hope of mine is that this retreat will fortify relationships within the student ministry. First, I desire to see the students grow deeper and stronger in their relationships with one another. Second, I desire to see the students connect on a deeper level with the adults that serve in the student ministry. And in order to see these things happen, I believe that we must have one ingredient among others . . . fun! Whether in board games, basketball, canoeing, hiking, or just sitting around the campfire roasting marshmallows, we will most definitely have fun.

So, if you are a student, then you better attend the retreat! If you are a parent, encourage your student to participate and pray that God would use this time to bring them closer to Christ. If you are anyone else, pray that God would refresh the hearts of our students in Christ and strengthen relationships within the student ministry.
