The D-Link DNS-321 2-Bay Network Storage Enclosure shares your documents, photos, music, and videos acrossthe network and on the Internet (via FTP server) so amily members, riends, or employees can access them. Thisenclosure, which can hold two 3.5 SATA hard drives o any capacity1, creates a central network point or backing up

valuable les. The built-in RAID 12 mirroring technology protects these les rom drive ailure. Other options such asStandard, JBOD, and RAID 0 are also available.

The DNS-321 shares les over the Internet via the built-in FTP server3. Users and groups can be created and assignedto olders with either read or read/write permissions. Quotas can be set per user or group to restrict space usage.In addition, the DNS-321 can be used to stream photos, music, and videos to UPnP AV compatible network mediaplayers4.

The included CD contains D-Links Easy Search Utility. This utility allows you to locate the DNS-321 on the networkand map drives to your computer. Backup sotware is also included on the CD. This sotware allows you to backup yourles rom a computer to the DNS-321 manually, by a schedule, or in real-time. Real-time backups are a great way tosaeguard against unortunate accidents that may result in the loss o important les.

Hardware OverviewFront View

Power Button:Press once to power on the DNS-321. Press and hold the button until it begins to blink to power down the DNS-321.

Drive Light:These lights will be solid BLUE when drives are connected but inactive. The lights will blink when the drives are beingaccessed, ormatted or synchronized. They will illuminate AMBER i a drive has ailed.

Network Activity Light:The light will be solid BLUE when there is an Ethernet connection. It will blink to indicate LAN trac.

Power Receptacle:The supplied power adapter connects here.

Ethernet Port:A Gigabit Ethernet port that connects the DNS-321 to a network.

Drive Eject Lever:Use the provided levers to eject the hard drives. The ront panel must be removed beore ejecting the drives.

Reset Button:A pinhole button located beside the Ethernet socket is used to reset the system or restore the actory deault settings.

Note:Afterresetting the unit you will still be able to access the data on your hard drives.

Section - Installation

Installation

1. Slide the aceplate up until it unlatches rom the device.

2. Once the aceplate is unlatched, pull it o the device, exposingthe drive bays.

This section provides installation inormation or the DNS-321. To install the DNS-321 on your local network, reer tothe steps below:

3. Insert a 3.5 SATA hard drive into an available drivebay. Make sure to align the drive connector to the SATAconnector on the bottom edge inside the drive bay o the

DNS-321. Gently push the drive in until it connects. Whena drive is inserted properly, you will eel it seat into theconnector. Some hard drives that are thin or oddly shapedmay need to be guided careully into position. I a driveis not properly seated, the light will not illuminate aterpowering on the device.

4. Attach the aceplate to the ront o the device.

5. Connect an Ethernet cable to the available Ethernet port. Thiscable should connect the DNS-321 to your local network via arouter or switch, or directly to a computer or conguration.

Section 3 - Confguration

Confguration

When rst powered on, during the initial boot sequence, the DNS-321 will wait to be assigned an IP address via DHCP.I it does not receive a DHCP assigned IP address, by deault it will have a sel-assigned IP address o 192.168.0.32.It is recommended to use the included D-Link Easy Search Utility when accessing and conguring the DNS-321 orthe rst time. I you want to change the IP address beore logging in or i you are unable to connect to the DNS-321IP address, you can use the Easy Search Utility provided on the product CD to locate the device on your network andmake any needed changes.

The Easy Search Utility displaysthe available DNS-321 devices onthe network.

Type admin or the username andleave the password eld blank.

When logging into the DNS-321 or the rst time, you will be asked to choose a drive conguration type and ormat thedrives.There are our options: Standard, JBOD, RAID 0 and RAID 1. Standard congures each disk as a separatevolume, while JBOD combines both disks into a single volume. See page 47 or more details on using the RAID

congurations.

When ormatting o the drive completes, the DNS-321 will prompt the user to restart. A restart countdown screen willappear, and when the restart is complete, the login screen will appear:

Note: Ater logging in to the DNS-321 or the rst time it is recommended to add a password to the admin account.(See page 39 or details.)

The DNS-321 web UI deaults to the Setuppage. The main categories or conguration are located in the menu tabsat the top o the page. These categories include:

Setup - Contains the DNS-321 setup wizard, as well as the LAN conguration settings and device

settings.

Advanced - Allows the DNS-321 administrator to congure users, groups o users and their storage

quotas. The UPnP AV server, iTunes server, FTP server and DHCP server settings are all contained

here as well.

Tools - Contains the conguration options or Admin account, time and system settings, and e-mail alerts.Power management options and RAID conguration options are also available.

Status - Contains a summary o DNS-321.

Support - Contains the DNS-321 help les.

Logout - Clicking this button will log the admin out and end the DNS-321 conguration session.

These pages and their conguration options will be discussed in detail in the ollowing pages o this manual.

The Local Area Network settings or the DNS-321 can be congured on the LAN page.

The LAN Link Speed is set to Autoby deault, but can be manually setto 100Mbps or 1000Mbps.

Selecting DHCP Client will causethe DNS-321 to obtain an IP addressrom the local DHCP server, suchas your router.

Device Settings

The device settings page allows you to assign a workgroup, name and description to the DNS-321.

Users/GroupsThe Users/Groups menu is used to create and manage user and group accounts. Up to 64 users and 10 groups can be

created. By deault, all users have read and write access to all olders but access rules can be created in the NetworkAccess menu.

To create user names and passwords in the User and Group Creationmenu:

Click the User radio button Type a unique User Name or each user added

Enter and conrm the user Password Click Add to create the new user

The user will be added to the User Listand will be available or assignmentto a user group.

To create a Group:

The Network Access settings allow you to assign users and groups access rights to specic olders or volumes. Bydeault, all volumes are open to anyone with read/write access on the local network. Beore specic user or group rulescan be created, the deault rules must be deleted.

Opportunistic locks (oplocks) are a characteristic o

the LAN Manager networking protocol implementedin the 32-Bit Windows amily. Oplocks areguarantees made by a server or a shared logical

volume to its clients. These guarantees inormthe Client that a les content will not be allowedto be changed by the server, or i some change

is imminent, the client will be notied beore thechange is allowed to proceed.

Oplocks are designed to increase networkperormance when it comes to network le sharing. However it is recommended to set the share oplocks to No (o) when using le-based databaseapplications

By deault Windows Vista has Oplocks enabled and cannot be disabled. I you are having network perormance issues with applications sharingles rom the DNS-321, you may try to improve perormance by setting Oplocks to No (o).

The DNS-321 is equipped with a built in FTP Server. The server is easy to congure and allows users access to importantdata whether they are on the local network or at a remote location. The FTP server can be congured to allow useraccess to specic directories, and will allow up to 10 users to access the DNS-321 simultaneously.

FTP Server Settings

Max User Set the maximum amount o users thatcan connect to the FTP server.

Idle Time Set the amount o time a user can remainidle beore being disconnected.

Port Set the FTP port. Deault is 21.

Flow Control Allow you to limit the amount obandwidth available or each user.

Most standard FTP clients like Windows

FTP, only support Western Europeancodepage when transerring iles.Northern European, Central European,Traditional and Simplied Chinese aswell as Cyrillic codepage support hasbeen added or non standard FTPclients that are capable o supportingthese character sets.

I you are behind a router, you will need to orward the FTP port rom the router to the DNS-321. Additional lteringand rewall settings may need to be modied on your router to allow FTP Access to the DNS-321 rom the Internet.Once the port has been orwarded on the router, users rom the internet will access the FTP server through the WANIP address o the router.

I you are using a D-Link router, such as the WBR-2310 used in the example below, your port orwarding rule shouldbe similar to the ollowing:

Name Name the DNS-321 FTP serverrule.

IP Address Enter the IP address o the

DNS-321.

Public Port Enter the public FTP port. Bydeault, the port is 21.

Private Port Enter the private FTP port. Bydeault, the port is 21.

Trafc Type Set the trac type to TCP.

I you use an FTP port other than 21, then users accessing the FTP server using an FTP client will have tospeciy the non-standard port, and3 users who are using a browser will have to speciy the port in the URL(e.g. tp://tp.dns321.com:3000, where the FTP port is 3000).

The DNS-321 Time page contains several dierent options or setting the devices internal clock. It is important thataccurate time is set so that scheduled backups and downloads will be accurate.

Select your time zone rom thedrop-down menu.

Network Time Protocol (NTP)synchronizes the DNS-321 with anInternet time server.

D-Link provides two time serversor your convenience. Choose theone closest to your location.

What is RAID?

RAID, short or Redundant Array o Independent Disks, is a combination o two or more disks with the aim o providingault tolerance and improving perormance. There are several dierent levels o RAID, with each providing a dierentmethod o sharing or distributing data amongst the drives. The DNS-321 supports RAID levels 0 and 1.

RAID 0 RAID 0 provides data striping, which spreadsout blocks o data over both drives, but does notprovide data redundancy.

Although perormance is improved, the lack oault tolerance means that i one drive ails, alldata in the array will be lost.

RAID 0

RAID 1 RAID 1 provides mirroringover both disks, withthe same read/write speed o a single disk. ARAID 1 array can only be as large as its smallest

member disk.

Because the data is stored on both disks,RAID 1 provides ault tolerance and protection,in addition to perormance advantages.

Replacing or Adding a New Hard DriveIt is recommended that you backup your important les beore replacing or adding a new hard drive to the DNS-321.

Replacing a Hard Drive:

Please make sure the power is o beore replacing a hard drive. Ater you have installed the new drive, turn on theDNS-321 and then connect to the Web UI. The DNS-321 will prompt you to ormat the new drive (Standard, RAID 1mode) or both drives (JBOD, RAID 0 mode).

Adding a New Hard Drive:

The DNS-321 is able to work with one single hard drive under Standard mode. Please make sure the power is o beore

Except as otherwise agreed by D-Link in writing, the replacement Sotware is provided only to the original licensee, andis subject to the terms and conditions o the license granted by D-Link or the Sotware. Replacement Sotware will be warranted or theremainder o the original Warranty Period and is subject to the same limitations and exclusions. I a material non-conormance is incapableo correction, or i D-Link determines in its sole discretion that it is not practical to replace the non-conorming Sotware, the price paid bythe original licensee or the non-conorming Sotware will be reunded by D-Link; provided that the non-conorming Sotware (and all copiesthereo) is rst returned to D-Link. The license granted respecting any Sotware or which a reund is given automatically terminates.

Non-Applicability o Warranty:

The Limited Warranty provided hereunder or Hardware and Sotware portions o D-Links products will not be applied to and does not coverany reurbished product and any product purchased through the inventory clearance or liquidation sale or other sales in which D-Link, thesellers, or the liquidators expressly disclaim their warranty obligation pertaining to the product and in that case, the product is being soldAs-Is without any warranty whatsoever including, without limitation, the Limited Warranty as described herein, notwithstanding anythingstated herein to the contrary.

Submitting A Claim:The customer shall return the product to the original purchase point based on its return policy. In case the return policy period has expiredand the product is within warranty, the customer shall submit a claim to D-Link as outlined below:

The customer must submit with the product as part o the claim a written description o the Hardware deect or Sotwarenonconormance in sucient detail to allow D-Link to conrm the same, along with proo o purchase o the product (such

as a copy o the dated purchase invoice or the product) i the product is not registered.

The customer must obtain a Case ID Number rom D-Link Technical Support at 1-877-453-5465, who will attempt to assistthe customer in resolving any suspected deects with the product. I the product is considered deective, the customer mustobtain a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number by completing the RMA orm and entering the assigned Case IDNumber at https://rma.dlink.com/.

Ater an RMA number is issued, the deective product must be packaged securely in the original or other suitable shippingpackage to ensure that it will not be damaged in transit, and the RMA number must be prominently marked on the outsideo the package. Do not include any manuals or accessories in the shipping package. D-Link will only replace the deectiveportion o the product and will not ship back any accessories.

The customer is responsible or all in-bound shipping charges to D-Link. No Cash on Delivery (COD) is allowed. Productssent COD will either be rejected by D-Link or become the property o D-Link. Products shall be ully insured by the customerand shipped to D-Link Systems, Inc., 17595 Mt. Herrmann, Fountain Valley, CA 92708. D-Link will not be held responsibleor any packages that are lost in transit to D-Link. The repaired or replaced packages will be shipped to the customer viaUPS Ground or any common carrier selected by D-Link. Return shipping charges shall be prepaid by D-Link i you use anaddress in the United States, otherwise we will ship the product to you reight collect. Expedited shipping is available uponrequest and provided shipping charges are prepaid by the customer. D-Link may reject or return any product that is notpackaged and shipped in strict compliance with the oregoing requirements, or or which an RMA number is not visible romthe outside o the package. The product owner agrees to pay D-Links reasonable handling and return shipping chargesor any product that is not packaged and shipped in accordance with the oregoing requirements, or that is determined byD-Link not to be deective or non-conorming.

What Is Not Covered:The Limited Warranty provided herein by D-Link does not cover:Products that, in D-Links judgment, have been subjected to abuse, accident, alteration, modication, tampering, negligence, misuse, aultyinstallation, lack o reasonable care, repair or service in any way that is not contemplated in the documentation or the product, or i themodel or serial number has been altered, tampered with, deaced or removed; Initial installation, installation and removal o the product orrepair, and shipping costs; Operational adjustments covered in the operating manual or the product, and normal maintenance; Damagethat occurs in shipment, due to act o God, ailures due to power surge, and cosmetic damage; Any hardware, sotware, rmware or otherproducts or services provided by anyone other than D-Link; and Products that have been purchased rom inventory clearance or liquidationsales or other sales in which D-Link, the sellers, or the liquidators expressly disclaim their warranty obligation pertaining to the product.
