Sings of damage to the environment:

One in every five species of bird in Britain has declined at such an alarming rate over recent years that it has been included on the national Red List. The Pitta Pittida family are falling victim to deforestation in part of the world where their existence is already fragile, according to the campaigning organization Birdlife International, which has been lobbying the UN Climate Change Conference in Cancun, which concluded last Friday, for action on the issue.

Tropical rainforests All over the world people

are cutting down millions of trees. As a result, many types of animals and plants are now disappearing. Trees are also important because they help to produce oxygen and control the climate. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that 70 percent of the anti-cancer plants identified so far are rain forest plants. A new drug under development by a private pharmaceutical company, possibly for treating HIV, is Calanolide A, which is derived from a tree discovered on Borneo, according to NCI.

Accident in the Gulf of Mexico

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico began when an oil rig blew up and sank on April 20, 2010. Hundreds of millions of gallons spilled while the companies tried to find a way to stop it. Finally, the oil well was plugged up in mid-September, but the clean up of oil and the research into its effects on wildlife, the ecosystem, and people will go on for decades.

Waste problem

(Istrinskay dump)There are big dumps growing near cities.

The problem of the waste recycling is growing sharper and sharper.

Page 9: Dmitry Marchenko Form 9-m. global warming climate change the greenhouse effect the hole in the ozone layer endangered species soil erosion pollution acid.

The biggest concentration of plastic waste is at this moment found in the Pacific Ocean, carrying trash from Canada, the U.S.A, Japan, Indonesia, etc.. But these circular currents also take place in the Indian Ocean and in the Atlantic Oceans bringing a similar concentration of waste in it’s centre. The plastic is fatal to a large part of our sea life. To start with the Albatross, these birds see the floating plastic as food and fill there stomach with it. Of course the plastic is not digested and while the plastic fills the stomach of these birds, it takes away there hunger to eat. The birds die with a body full of plastic.

Traffic pollutionIn big cities cars and

buses have polluted the air. Many people in

cities now have very bad health problems.

Pollution from exhaust gases of vehicles is

reponsible for 60% of all air pollution and in cities

up to 80%. There is a variety of harmful

chemicals present in these gases, with lead being one of the most

dangerous.

Alternativeenergy

Photovoltaic solar energy is based on semiconductor processing and accordingly, benefits from steep cost reductions similar to those realized in the microprocessor industry (i.e., driven by larger scale, higher module efficiency, and improving processing technologies). PV solar energy is perhaps the only energy technology whose electricity generation cost could be reduced by half or more over the next 5 years. Better and more efficient manufacturing process and new technology such as advanced thin film solar cell is a good example of that helps to reduce industry cost.

A wind generatorFloating wind farms are similar to a

regular wind farm, but the difference is that they float in the middle of the ocean. Offshore wind farms can be placed in water up to 40 metres (130 ft) deep, whereas floating wind turbines can float in water up to 700 metres (2,300 ft) deep.

The advantage of having a floating wind farm is to be able to harness the winds from the open ocean. Without any obstructions such as hills, trees and buildings, winds from the open ocean can reach up to speeds twice as fast as coastal areas. A Norwegian energy company, StatoilHydro, launched the first test period for the floating wind farms in autumn 2009.

Algae fuel Algae fuel is a biofuel

which is derived from algae. During photosynthesis, algae and other photosynthetic organisms capture carbon dioxide and sunlight and convert it into oxygen and biomass. The benefits of algal biofuel are that it can be produced industrially, thereby obviating the use of arable land and food crops (such as soy, palm, and canola), and that it has a very high oil yield as compared to all other sources of biofuel.

Electricity from rubbish

-save electricity and energy-use alternative energy-reduce rubbish-recycle boxes and plastic-plant more trees-no traffic near our school- take care of endangered animals
